The result of this digital revolution on Wall Street is a complex and fragmented financial system that is hard to understand and overseen. A system that we are all connected to. The only people who understand the system a bit, are the people who built it. Haim Bodek started his own high frequency trading in 2007 and built a from his point of view perfect and fast algorithm. Regreening the desert with John D. Liu - Docu - 2012

47:31
For more than 15 years, cameraman and ecologist John D. Liu has been working on his worldwide mission to green deserts and to restore biodiversity. It all started in 1995 when Liu filmed the Loess-plateau in China. He witnessed a local population who turned an area of almost the same size as The Netherlands from a dry, exhausted wasteland into one green oasis. This experience changed his life. From that moment on, Liu has been travelling all over the world to convince and inspire government leaders, policy-makers and farmers with his film material and knowledge. Liu diligently spreads the message that restoration of ecosystems is not only possible, but also economically very meaningful. Backlight accompanies Liu on his mission in Jordan and shows on the basis of Liu’s own film material that a green future is possible worldwide. Quants - The Alchemists of Wall Street - VPRO documentary

47:49
Quants are the math wizards and computer programmers in the engine room of our global financial system who designed the financial products that almost crashed Wall street. The credit crunch has shown how the global financial system has become increasingly dependent on mathematical models trying to quantify human (economic) behaviour. Now the quants are at the heart of yet another technological revolution in finance: trading at the speed of light. What are the risks of treating the economy and its markets as a complex machine? Will we be able to keep control of this model-based financial system, or have we created a monster? A story about greed, fear and randomness from the insides of Wall Street. 53:05
"Where do multinationals pay taxes and how much?" Gaining insight from international tax experts, Backlight takes a look at tax havens, the people who live there and the routes along which tax is avoided globally. A place where sizeable capital streams travel the world at the speed of light and avoid paying tax. The Tax Free Tour is an economic thriller mapping the systemic risk for governments and citizens alike. Is this the price we have to pay for globalised capitalism? At the same time, the free online game "Taxodus" by Femke Herregraven is launched. Breakthrough in renewable energy - VPRO documentary

46:11
It’s not in the papers but a silent revolution is moving across the world. Renewable energy is becoming cheaper than from fossil fuels. It means that progressively the choice for wind and solar energy is no longer an ethical one but an economic one. And this will speed up the transfer to renewable energy. In countries like Brazil, Australia, Chile and parts of the United States people consider renewable energy because of financial reasons. The price of solar and wind energy will continue to drop and in more countries renewable energy will occur. A surprising newcomer on the market is Morocco, where the government expects that in 2020 more than 40 percent of the energy could come from solar energy. Zero days - Security leaks for sale - Docu - 2014

There is new gold to be found on the internet, and possibly in your own computer. Secret backdoors, that do not have a digital lock yet, are being traded at astronomical amounts. In the cyber world trade, where there are no rules, you are in luck with "white-hat" hackers, who guard your online security. But their opponents, the "black-hat" hackers, have an interest in an unsecure internet, and sell security leaks to the highest bidder. They are the preferred suppliers of security services and cyber defence. Who are these black and white wizards, who fight for the holy grail of hackers: zero days? The real value of your personal data - Docu - 2013

49:18
The personal data that is being collected by internet companies has turned into a goldmine. The applications for this enormous mountain of data is endless, from health care uses to marketeers who can accurately predict your behavior. But who is making money from your data? And who owns your personal data? Original title: The value of your personal data. Personal data is being collected constantly. Smartphones send your location data, internet browsers store which websites you visited and credit card companies carefully register your buying patterns. One would say that all this personal data is being used to send you advertisements and banners. But that’s just the start. Your data is not only used to understand who you are right now, but also what your life will look like in the future, because that is where the big money is. Could we regain the control over our own personal data, so that we can share in the profits? Due to huge flow of information, one can tell who we are today and what we will do tomorrow. Can we get control of our own data? Information is collected and stored on your behalf. Via mobile phone and computer, every step you take is saved and analyzed. By companies like Google, Facebook, Apple and Twitter, among others. This precious personal data is not just saved. There are now new valuable uses for your data, giving your personal data the worth of gold. Data centers full of your personal data are the heart of what is called Big Data. A treasure of valuable new insights, derived from your location data, emails, photos, text messages, and more from your digital production. Because your personal data is not only used to send customized ads. Your data is used to predict your future behavior. Through smart analyzes of all your behavior that you leave behind on your mobile phone and computer, it’s easy to find out who you are. And that's not that hard, it turns out. For example, the University of Cambridge just by looking at which buttons you click on Facebook, can see if your parents are divorced, whether you are gay, and so on. Predicting human behavior, possible thanks to all your personal data, can help to design cities better, combat diseases and prevent wars. But if all of your personal data is so valuable, then shouldn’t it be time for you to get control of it? And also take part of that profit for yourself? The Bitcoin Gospel - VPRO documentary

48:53
Is bitcoin the blueprint for a bankless currency, or the biggest pyramid scheme ever? When the financial world collapsed in 2008, a mysterious genius under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto presented the architecture for the perfect, bankless currency. Bitcoins can't be forged, and can be transferred worldwide with one click of a button, without transaction costs. Up till today, nobody knows who Nakamoto is, but his invention of the first decentralized cryptocurrency became world-famous within a couple of years. ‘Bitcoin Jesus’ Roger Ver invested massively in bitcoins when they were still worth less than a dollar, and in 2013 he saw the bitcoin exchange rate reaching as much as 1000 dollars. What’s the bottom line, now that this globally disruptive currency has grown to maturity? Is bitcoin the blueprint for fair money, separated from banks or states, or will it be a new hierarchy from haves and have-nots? Hack your DNA with CRISPR - VPRO documentary - 2018

46:39
You won't be able to blame it on your genetics anymore: with CRISPR, it's so easy to hacn into your DNA. CRISPR technology is our future, and experiments with DNA hacking are booming. CRISPR biotechnology is not science fiction anymore, it is our very near future. Would you hack and reprogram your own DNA with CRISPR? Breaking the code of life, hacking DNA at home. Welcome to the world of a new nature. We can now literally cut and paste DNA with the new CRISPR technology. There is a revolutionary development going on that will have major consequences for humans, plants and animals. The new biotechnology is here. 'Bio is the New Digital'. We are able to accurately reprogram the genetic code of our body cells, embryos, bacteria, viruses and plants. With the CRISPR technology we can adjust the characteristics of each organism to our needs. This allows us to permanently ban diseases, improve our body conditions and adapt plants to our food needs. The special feature of CRISPR technology is that it is relatively simple. In the past year, the number of experiments and applications has exploded. Around the world, people have been tinkering with CRISPR: experimenting at home with the 'Do it Yourself CRISPR kits'. Scientists call for new ethical frameworks. The demand for the (un)desirable so-called designer babies is imminent. Although this is not yet the case, we can put an end to hereditary diseases in the short term. We may also want to make bacteria that can eat oil or plastic, pigs in which human organs can grow or bring extinct animals back to life. It looks like science fiction but it is now closer to our reality than ever. With: Emmanuelle Charpentier (geneticist), John van der Oost (microbiologist), Andrew Hessel (biotechnologist), Niels Geijsen (cell biologist), Josiah Zayner (biohacker) and Ivan van der Meij (FSHD patient). Still Berning - VPRO documentary - 2016

47:16
Bernie Sanders lost the primaries to nominate a US presidential candidate for the Democratic Party to Hillary Clinton. But it was a glorious loss. And it has become a beginning, not an end. The end of the Bernie Sanders campaign marks the start of a political movement. What are the next steps for this movement and what role will it play in future elections? Bernie’s campaign made history by receiving a record number of donations from individual citizens, not Wall Street. For the future this could dramatically reduce the enormous power that corporations, banks and Super PACS currently have in American politics. New technology, apps and software have the potential to make campaigning more accessible and affordable to a much wider variety of people and a new kind of political candidates. With: Jane O’Meara Sanders (partner), Arun Chaudhary (creative director for Bernie’s online campaign), Zephyr Teachout (candidate for the US House of Representative), Saikat Chakrabarti (director digital organising technology) and Josh Smith, Rapi Castillo & Jon Culver (Progressive Coders/Coders for Sanders). E-stonia - A startup country - VPRO documentary - 2015

48:10
In the very north-east of Europe, on the border of Russia, lies the small country of Estonia. Per capita, Estonia has the most start-ups; internet access is considered a human right and all Estonians have free wifi. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992, independent Estonia had a very young government. The country decided to become the first e-society in the world: government services, education and health care are all online; government spending is transparent and everyone owns their own data. However, this digital development makes the country vulnerable to cyber attacks. In 2007, the first cyber war was fought in Estonia. Since then the country has been a forerunner in cyber security. In London we meet the very first Estonian e-resident, journalist Edward Lucas. We also meet an Iranian-American Skype worker who signs all his contracts with a digital signature which will soon be acknowledged in the entire EU. Featuring: Edward Lucas (journalist, UK), Hamid Tahsildoost (Skype), Toomas Henrik Ilves (president, Estonia), Kristo Käärmann (Transferwise), Slim Sikkut (ICT councillor, Estonia) and captain Uko Valtenberg (chief cyber range, Estonian Defence Forces). Regreening the planet - VPRO documentary - 2014

48:12
Regreening the planet looks at the profit that comes from the recovery of ecosystems in Spain, Egypt and India. Restoring ecosystems does not only generate ecological profit but also economic. In Regreening the desert, the makers of VPRO Backlight showed that the greening of deserts is very well possible. They followed the American-Chinese cameraman and ecologist John D. Liu. He filmed how an inhospitable dry mountain area as large as the Netherlands was transformed into a lush green oasis. The greening caused not only ecological recovery but also economic growth of the region. Since then, John D. Liu has traveled the world to inspire people in other countries to follow this example. Dutch ecologist Willem Ferwerda was inspired by Liu and decided to work together with him. This cooperation has grown into a new organization, Commonland, a foundation with a clear mission: to restore the ecosystems on a large scale worldwide. The point of departure is that restoring landscapes not only yields ecological profits but also money, work and hope for the people living there. We can see that this works in Egypt: in 1977 Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish SEKEM, experimented to green the desert at Cairo. In 2014, SEKEM has grown to be the leading supplier of ecological products in Egypt and far beyond. Dr. Abouleish has built not only a flourishing business in the desert but a complete community with schools and their own medical and cultural facilities. A better proof that greening and social innovation go hand in hand is almost impossible to find. That all areas can grow alive, even if they are completely eroded by erosion, also appears from the special story of Indian Jadav "Molai" Payeng. When he was 17, he worked for a replanting project in Assam province. After the project was completed and the other laborers had disappeared, he decided to continue propagating wood by hand. Now, Molai forest is 300 acres and populated by elephants, Bengal tigers, deer, rhino and numerous birds. Payeng is also called The Forest Man in India because he has been able to create a jungle singlehandedly. That is something that Spain might well use. Large areas in Spain are dry and abandoned due to misused agricultural subsidies, unintentional water and land use and large-scale erosion. The population is turning its back on the countryside and moves to the cities, but there is also unemployment there. In Ayoo de Vidriales, a graying village in the middle of Spain, agricultural engineer Pedro Alonso Fernandez has begun to recover land. He wants to show that the Spanish silted and eroded soils are in fact Green Gold. Peter Frankopan - The silk roads - VPRO documentary - 2017

46:36
British historian Peter Frankopan, author of the bestseller "The Silk Roads: A New History of the World" paints an unexpected portrait of our Western civilization and the way we perceive our position in the world: old Europe is convinced to be the best, most prosperous and safest region. Europeans think that they have a good position in the actual world, absolutely denying the new world order that is currently happening. Original title: De nieuwe zijderoute The power is shifting from West to East. Until today, the world history was a western-centered enterprise - based on the belief that everyone should be like us, or at least should want to be. According to Frankopan, the West has completely alienated itself from the rest of the world. Old Europe is on the decline and the economic prosperity in Asia, Africa and South America is over. We have no friends left east of Venice, says Frankopan. The power center shifts along the lines of the new silk roads, from West to Wast. How should we adapt to this new world order? We live in confusing times, we are using apps as if our lives depended on it, our boundaries are shifting, and we become increasingly nationalist. We are convinced that we live in the best, most prosperous and safest region in the world. In short, we think high of ourselves and that we hold the world in our grip, but we would be surprised by the new developments and dangers that we have refused to see so far. It is quite logical, says Frankopan, because we are the product of our own self-estimation, our deep-rooted arrogance, our historical unreliability and our intrinsic lack of self-reflection. Thus, we refuse to believe that there is a new world order beyond the boundaries of our prosperity that has great political, economic and cultural influence on the world as we think it is. According to Frankopan, it is high time for a reassessment of our reality. Before we can understand where it is going with the world and before we can react to it, we have to learn to look at ourselves differently. Looking back, looking far back, he gives us a mirror, which ultimately shows us that we need to adjust - whether we want to or not. Digital Amnesia - VPRO documentary - 2014

49:13
Our memory is dissipating. Hard drives only last five years, a web page is forever changing and there’s no machine left that reads 15-year old floppy disks. Digital data is vulnerable. Yet entire libraries are shredded and lost to budget cuts, because we assume everything can be found online. But is that really true? For the first time in history, we have the technological means to save our entire past, yet it seems to be going up in smoke. Will we suffer from collective amnesia? This VPRO Backlight documentary tracks down the amnesiac zeitgeist starting at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, whose world-famous 250-year old library was lost to budget cuts. The 400.000 Books were saved from the shredder by Ismail Serageldin, director of the world-famous Library of Alexandria, who is turning the legendary library of classical antiquity into a new knowledge hub for the digital world. Making the future - VPRO documentary - 2014

47:21
Decreasing costs of materials and tools, and the availability of all kinds of information mean everyone can become a maker, developer or entrepreneur. Is this the start of a new industrial revolution? Rapid technological developments have not only made knowledge available to everyone, but the tools to invent and produce are now at our fingertips too. A new generation of inventors and makers that have taken matters into their own hands and are innovating and producing in attics, sheds and small local laboratories. Will it lead to a democratisation of innovation and fabrication or should we fear what the new makers are up to in their own high-tech laboratories? And what does it mean for our economy? Hobbyists and mechanics always existed, but recently they have it easier than ever. Assisted by the rise of digital manufacturing and the unlimited amount of knowledge accessible through the internet, anyone can now create and develop what was previously reserved for large factories and research laboratories. Large organizations like NASA seek technological innovation at fairs like the Maker Faire, where the growing group of creators showcase what they've manufactured at home. And that is increasingly high level. For example, where 3D printing provided especially funny ornaments, Amsterdam designer Joris Laarman has designed a chair that's easy to print. At Shapeways, you can print everything you want, from plastic to metal and all sorts of new shops and trade have arisen. But digitization does not end up with making things alone: The analysis of genetic material has become so cheap in recent years that Do-It-Yourself's laboratories arise. Everyone can learn, for example, to manipulate bacteria genetically. What will the world look like when everyone can develop and make physical products without the need for major investments? According to Jeremy Rifkin, author of the book "The Zero Marginal Cost Society", it will lead to a new economic revolution, in which capitalism, as we know it, will play a much smaller role. TTIP: Might is Right - VPRO documentary - 2015

49:17
The proposed free trade agreement between the US and Europe (TTIP, Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) causes concern about the European right to self-determination. The most controversial part of TTIP is ISDS: investor-state dispute settlement that will make it possible for companies to sue governments that damage their investments. Tens of thousands of European citizens protested against TTIP, which would create the world’s largest free-trade zone. According to the Dutch government TTIP could be realized as soon as 2016. If the EU ratifies the trade agreement, critics fear that the scales will tilt toward North-American standards and values with regard to (food) safety, workers’ and consumer rights. In order to understand the potential consequences of this, VPRO Backlight traveled to Canada, which became one of the most sued countries in the world after it entered into a trade agreement with the US. With: Steve Verheul (Canadian negotiator), Gus van Harten (Canadian lawyer and ISDS expert), Nikos Lavranos (former negotiator for the Netherlands) and British Korean economist Ha-Joon Chang. Offline is the new luxury - VPRO documentary - 2016

46:43
To be online all the time and everywhere. It sounds great, but it has its drawbacks. As digital networks are closing in, there are fewer places to be really on your own. Being offline is becoming a luxury. Where can you be offline? We are connected to the internet even in our bedrooms. It’s the ambition of companies like Google and Facebook to connect the entire world, so that we can be online all the time and everywhere. Google has send balloons up into the skies over Sri Lanka to provide the island state with free Wi-Fi for a month. On the ground, more and more devices communicate through the so-called Internet-of-Things. We are going to be ‘glass citizens’ in a transparent house, connected for life to a wireless intravenous drip and traced anywhere via our smartphones. What does it mean? A small but growing group of people is saying goodbye to lifetime connectability. They are researching ways to keep control. What can we learn from them about life in the digital era? With: Paul Frissen (political scientist), Sherry Turkle (psychologist MIT), Evgeny Morozov (internet critic) and Birgitta Jonsdottir (hacker & founder Pirate Party) Originally broadcasted by VPRO in 2016. © VPRO Backlight May 2016 On VPRO broadcast you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series. Becoming immortal - VPRO documentary - 2018

45:00
Becoming immortal is now at hands reach, thanks to the latest technological innovations. Would you want to become immortal, even if that means preserving your severed head in a cryogenic tank? If aging is considered as a disease, then the cure is immortality. This is not a Black Mirror episode, this is VPRO Backlight: Becoming immortal. Original title: De Onsterfelijken Is eternal life reserved only for the rich or the lunatics of the earth? Silicon Valley is fascinated with the concept of overcoming death and rejuvenation. Billions are invested in becoming immortal. The idea is that when aging is considered as a disease, we can also develop a cure for dying and modify the natural lifecycle thanks to age reversing or anti aging therapy. A tight community of scientists and entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley bear an enormous source of daring capital, like Aubrey de Grey says: ““If you’re not pissing everybody off in this life, then you’re probably not making much of a difference”. This community is also firmly convinced that our DNA can be cracked in what would becalled: The code of mortality, allowing us all to become immortal. And if becoming immortal does not happen within their own life span, then it will certainly happen in the following years. Therefore many a millionaire has his own personal cryogenic tank ready for cryopreservation so they can be brought back to life after death. Whether it will be in material form or in the form of a software program (digital immortality) or as nanobots remains to be seen. Some can not wait that long and use themselves as guinea pigs. All of them hope to become immortal. The science in the field of life extension is a booming business. The question remains whether everyone can benefit from this groundbreaking knowledge and become immortal. With: Aubrey de Grey (Scientist), Liz Parrish (Bioviva), Darren Moore (Millionaire) and Kathleen Ann Goonan (Science-fiction writer), Linda Chamberlain (Alcor). Space race, space law and future life in space - Docu

47:59
Space race is reality. But how do we prevent that the future life in space becomes a wild west? Space law has been there but is outdated. A new space law is urgently needed to have a civilized future life in space. How will the future space law look like? How do we shape with the new space law in mind our future life in space? People have always been fascinated by outer space and curious about the stars, planets and extraterrestrial life. The century space has remained a great mystery and a source of outlandish stories from green Martians too deadly meteorites. Slowly but surely science is giving us more and more real knowledge thanks to satellites space flights and moon landings. It´s not science fiction anymore. Entering space has become a reality. You could end up with cowboys doing whatever they want and making a mess. The colonization of space has only just begun. Numerous parties have great ambitions to explore outer space for tourism, transportation and raw materials. It’s a race, and slowly but surely, it’s becoming clear that there is a need for clear rules concerning the entering and use of this space. Space lawyer Frans von der Dunk is currently one of the few people in the world who is trying to shed some light on this. On a sunny morning in 1889, hundreds of covered wagons were ready to start a race. Under the motto ‘first come, first served’, settlers could claim their own piece of land. This Oklahoma Run got completely out of control. Today, we're on the eve of a new colonization: this time it’s outer space. The new space race is about the claims that can be made: to space itself and to the various planets and asteroids. Up till now, the 1967 Outer Space Treaty was the starting point for ‘space law’, but it’s completely outdated. The massive and irreversible space race which is about to start is crying out for a new legislation that’s clear to all parties involved. Frans von der Dunk, professor of Space Law at the University of Nebraska, has written the first manual for outer space. He hopes his book will become the first real standard work for the new space legislation. The biggest psychological experiment ever is being conducted, and we’re all taking part in it: every day, a billion people are tested online. Which ingenious tricks and other digital laws ensure that we fill our online shopping carts to the brim, or stay on websites as long as possible? Or vote for a particular candidate? The bankruptcies of department stores and shoe shops clearly show that our buying behaviour is rapidly shifting to the Internet. An entirely new field has arisen, of ‘user experience’ architects and ‘online persuasion officers’. How do these digital data dealers use, manipulate and abuse our user experience? Not just when it comes to buying things, but also with regards to our free time and political preferences. Aren’t companies, which are running millions of tests at a time, miles ahead of science and government, in this respect? Now the creators of these digital seduction techniques, former Google employees among them, are themselves arguing for the introduction of an ethical code. What does it mean, when the conductors of experiments themselves are asking for their power and possibilities to be restricted? In fact , we are doing so; the only thing is you do not know it....yet. The documentary Here comes the Sun will show that solar stocks are soaring, the desert is our new land of glory, algae in the garden will fuel your car and your roof is a new marketplace for solar real estate managers. Algorithms rule us all - VPRO documentary - 2018

45:53
Whether you get a job or a mortgage, who is released early from prison: algorithms increasingly determine the big decisions in our lives. Algorithms rule us all, algorithms rule everything. Because algorithms are faster and more efficient than people. But do they always make better decisions? And what does a society look like in which we are sent by big data and computer code? Companies, and increasingly governments too, use algorithms to automate bureaucratic processes. These algorithms, sets of instructions and rules that are fed by big data, unnoticeably determine our lives more and more. For example, the algorithm of Facebook determines which (political) advertisements we see and see large groups of employees in the on-demand economy never even a boss. From an application procedure to a dismissal request they are controlled by an algorithm. Where should they complain if something does not go as it should be? Legislatives are also emerging in the judiciary. For example, an American prisoner had to sit longer than comparable prisoners because the algorithm, which establishes a risk score, gave him an inexplicably high outcome. And unlike the decisions made by a judge, it turns out to be virtually impossible to challenge the assessment of an algorithm. Recently the British company Cambridge Analytica appeared to have developed models based on large amounts of Facebook data, which could influence the voting behavior of voters. These psychographics show that algorithms can not only steer individual lives but also democracy. The mathematicians and programmers begin to realize that the algorithms that are among all these automated decision systems are not neutral and may contain errors. Because the smart code may then decide more quickly than people, the results are not only sometimes defective, but sometimes downright dangerous. Should we be blindly guided by the decisions of the algorithm? Waste is food - VPRO documentary - 2007

49:09
The waste we discard does not disappear. That is impossible, because the Earth is a closed system. Our waste only seems invisible because we dilute it with water, cover it with earth or have the wind blow it away. But in the end, we cannot avoid encountering it again. In our drinking water, in the air we breathe, in our food and in our body. In this episode of Backlight, the designer William McDonough and the chemist Michael Braungart discuss the solution to this problem: the principle of Waste = Food. An inspiring documentary on the Cradle to Cradle design concept of the chemist Michael Braungart and the architect William McDonough. Man is the only creature that produces landfills. Natural resources are being depleted on a rapid scale while production and consumption are rising in nations like China and India. The waste production worldwide is enormous and if we do not do anything we will soon have turned all our resources into one big messy landfill. But there is hope. The German chemist Michael Braungart, and the American designer-architect William McDonough are fundamentally changing the way we produce and build. If waste would become food for the biosphere or the technosphere (all the technical products we make), production and consumption could become beneficial for the planet. A design and production concept that they call Cradle to Cradle. A concept that is seen as the next industrial revolution: design every product in such a way that at the end of its lifecycle the component materials become a new resource. But also design buildings in such a way that they produce energy and become a friend to the environment. Large companies like Ford and Nike are working with McDonough and Braungart to change their production facilities and their products. They realize that economically wise, waste is a destruction of capital. You make something with no value. Based on their ideas the Chinese government is working towards a circular economy where Waste = Food. An amazing story that will definitely change your way of thinking about production and consumption. This documentary won the Silver Dragon at the Beijing International Science Film Festival 2006. How green energy will change our future - Docu

44:52
How will green energy change our future? What will our future look like with green energy? The growth of green energy goes together with change. Our future will not only include green energy, but our future will also be shaped by it. What will the future sustainable world look like? That is the big question, now that the global transition towards sustainable energy is gaining momentum. For the growth of sustainable energy involves a lot more changes than just the color of the power supplied to our homes. How will we build, how will our mobility be impacted, and will energy, one day, be free? Just like the Internet turned out to have an unforeseen influence on all kinds of industries, from music to taxi businesses, the transition towards sustainable energy will also rise beyond the energy sector. And with a much wider impact than is now assumed. But we know surprisingly little about what that world will look like, and how the people in it will live, work and move around. Expectations are that, by the 2050s, two-thirds of the electricity generated globally will be sustainable. The Netherlands is ambitious too. But what kind of world are we heading for, really, with all these sustainable measures? In partial areas, the future is clear: a massive stop to the use of gas, lots of windmills and solar panels, and perhaps a self-driving car outside. But, for now, there is no wider vision of what the sustainable new world will look like. What will the world be like once energy has become practically free? What will the impact of the transition towards sustainable energy be on the balance of power in the world? A journey along places where the sustainable future is already (nearly) visible. In China, for example, old collapsed coal mines are given a new destination as solar parks. In Denmark, the power plants of the future also serve as skiing slopes. And in Malmö, Sweden, new leases are signed with green fingers. Original title: Voorbij de groene horizon With: Bjarke Ingels (architect, BIG Copenhagen), Peggy Liu (green pioneer JUCCCE Shanghai) and Varun Sivaram (author 'Taming the Sun' and expert clean energy technology Council on Foreign Relations in Washington DC). The financial brain of the London City - Docu - 2013

50:01
Joris Luyendijk is a journalist and a publicist with a banker’s blog on The Guardian. For this episode of VPRO backlight, he dives into the financial brain of the London City, and descends into the minds of the master bankers. A study of adrenaline, testosterone, addiction, and the magic of big money. Original title: Inside the banker's brain Five years after the breakout of the financial crisis, we still do not have a good picture of the damage. The credit crunch was followed by economic recessions, the EURO crisis, and vexatious political indecision. Meanwhile, analyses, reports, books, and films have been made on how the financial system has pushed us over the edge of the abyss, and we have become familiar with terms like junk mortgage, derivatives, and bonus culture. But oddly enough, we know very little about the players in the system: the bankers, the traders, the inventors of poisonous financial products, the Masters of the Universe. They were vital to the image of the financial boom when it was rampant, but largely stayed out of sight when the blows fell. What do we even know about this new, self-proclaimed elite, the French sociologist Michel Wieviorka asked himself in an earlier Backlight episode on the Metamorphosis of a Crisis. What are their goals, their dreams, their fears, what is their taste, and how do they work? Is Urban Mining the future?

 - VPRO documentary

47:24
What is Urban Mining and will Urban Mining shape the future of recycling? Has Urban Mining the power to change mobile phones into gold? And if so, how does Urban Mining work? This documentary shows where our e-waste goes, how we can avoid filthy garbage hills and what for business opportunities recycling can offer. Besides the Scheldt river, under the smoke of Antwerp you can find the company of Umicore. The terrain is 113 hectares and around 1600 peoples work there and are busy with mining. The company is extremely well structured and efficient. They dig in electronic waste or e-waste and look for precious metals such as gold, platinum, silver and base metals as copper and led. This new form of mining is called Urban Mining. It is estimated that Urban Mining can cover up to 40% of global demand of precious metals. Our waste is worth money. Recovering it has started up a new global industry worth billions. It is called Urban Mining and it appears to be the solution for many of our environmental problems and our energy needs. And it is hot. A ton of broken mobile phones, computers or other electronic waste contains sixty times the amount of gold a ton of gold ore has. Moreover, it is easier to get at. It is estimated that 30 to 40 percent of total world demand for rare metals can be covered by urban mining and this is only the beginning. Urban Mining has a different, almost hilarious consequence: for years we have dumped our electronic waste in developing countries, with our eyes closed. There, it was to be recycled. But in Africa only one quarter of the gold, platinum and coltan is recovered whereas the newest technology in Belgium recovers almost 99 percent. So somewhere there’s a profit to be made. The NGO ‘Closing the Loop’ is buying up dead mobile phones and computer parts that we have dumped in developing countries making our waste a desirable sales item over there. The Anthropocene: The age of mankind - Docu - 2017

47:11
An ocean that contains as much plastic as fish, an atmosphere filled with CO2 choking the whole mankind and mass extinction of animals. The destructive influence of mankind will be at least as disastrous as the asteroid element that wiped the dinosaurs off the planet. Reason for Dutch scientist Paul Crutzen to introduce a new geological period: the Anthropocene, or the age of mankind. Original title: Tijdperk van de mens German explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was one of the first to see how everything in an ecosystem is connected. Von Humboldt introduced the idea of the Earth as a living organism in Western thinking, which eventually became the basis for the later environmental movement. Geologists from now see the impact of mankind at an increasing pace: climate warming, plastic soup, nuclear fallout, a disturbed water supply through erosion and tar sands, higher CO2 concentrations and diminishing biodiversity. During the last century, the influence of mankind on our Earth and atmosphere has become so great that it is judged by some scientists to be irreversible. To name this influence, a group of geologists recently proposed to date the Anthropocene back to 1950, with the exponential growth of the fossil economy. But earlier it was also discussed that the beginning of the industrial revolution was the starting point, or the first forms of agriculture or even the first mining in the Stone Age. The influence of mankind on the Earth is so great that next generations will be able to see it back in the Earth's layers over hundreds of thousands of years. But if mankind really creates its own geological period, how can we deal with it in an adult way without reliance on a naive belief such as the self-solving ability of God or nature? How can mankind take responsibility and benefit from its influence? We are also finding solutions for climate change and depletion of our mineral resources here on Earth: from the cultivation of cucumbers in the desert, the mining of platinum into the space to the regreening of eroded land. Are these breakthrough just a bandaid on an hemorrhage or can mankind shape the Anthropocene by means of technological intervention so that we meet a viable future? With: Andrea Wulf (historian and author of 'The Inventor of Nature', a biography of explorer Alexander von Humboldt), Bruno Latour (philosopher associated with Sciences Po in Paris and author of, among others, Facing Gaia. Eight Lectures on the New Climatic Regime ') and Phil Gibbard (British geologist setting up a working group to see if the Anthropocene can be introduced as an official geological term). The Israel Lobby in the US - VPRO documentary - 2007

50:35
For many years now the American foreign policy has been characterised by the strong tie between the United States and Israel. Does the United States in fact keep Israel on its feet? And how long will it continue to do so? In 2006 the American political scientists John Mearsheimer and Steve Walt published the controversial article 'The Israel Lobby and US foreign policy'. In it they state that it is not, or no longer, expedient for the US to support and protect present-day Israel. The documentary sheds light on both parties involved in the discussion: those who wish to maintain the strong tie between the US and Israel, and those who were critical of it and not infrequently became 'victims' of the lobby. The question arises to what extend the pro-Israel lobby ultimately determines the military and political importance of Israel itself. With political scientist John Mearsheimer, neocon Richard Perle, lobby organization AIPAC, televangelist John Hagee, historian Tony Judt, Human Rights Watch director Kenneth Roth, colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, Democrat Earl Hilliard, Israeli peace negotiator Daniel Levy and investigative journalist Michael Massing. The ocean plastic cleanup of Boyan Slat - Docu - 2018

44:56
With the ocean plastic cleanup, Boyan Slat has set up the first and the greatest ocean plastic cleanup campaign in history. And it all started about five years ago, with a graduation project about the plastic soup in the ocean. Today, Boyan Slat has eighty employees, and he is about to roll out his first Ocean Cleanup system in the Pacific. VPRO Backlight follows Boyan Slat closely on the exciting journey of the ocean plastic cleanup. Boyan Slat's fight against the plastic soup. By now, everybody will have seen the images of the plastic soup in the ocean. And everybody agrees that something has to be done. But it is not all that clear how we should tackle the plastic soup problem, or what would work best. Around this time, in the Pacific, between San Francisco and Hawaii, the brainchild of the inventor Boyan Slat is put in place: System 001. This five million dollar and 600-metre long floating colossus is the starting point for the largest ocean plastic cleanup campaign in history. Boyan Slat, a 24-year-old pioneer has worked towards this moment, day and night, for five years on end. Today, his 'The Ocean Cleanup' foundation employs eighty people with only one mission: a plastic-free ocean by the year 2050. To get to that point, over one hundred systems will be tug to the centres of the five different gyres. Those places in the oceans where plastic waste accumulates as a result of the ocean current. At the same time, we will have to come up with a solution at the source to avoid plastic waste ending up in the ocean in the first place. For with a plastic consumption of 320 million tonnes a year, something will have to change at the source too. VPRO Backlight followed the preparations for the long-awaited launch up close. What are the chances of success for his mission? And who are his examples and financiers? And whose corner does Boyan Slat think the ball is in: citizens, the government, or technology? Your data or your freedom? - VPRO documentary - 2014

48:06
How do we remain in charge of our own data? Are there ways to escape the digital dystopia, where your data tells everything about you? We live in the world after Edward Snowden. The communication of citizens and consumers is widely intercepted and monitored. Your data is being monitored and analyzed, and now even sold. We seem to be trapped in a global digital web, created by governments and Silicon Valley. Original title: Bureau voor digitale sabotage We thought the digital revolution would make us the world of communication. But now we are caught in a global digital web. Your smartphone, your bonus card, your modem, your DigiD, your medical patient file, your search request, your Facebook account, your heating thermostat, your text messages. At each headline, it just seems to be closing on you. The patch on our webcam illustrates: The Big Brothers and Little Sisters are getting closer. Backlight looks behind the madness of the day and asks the question: how do we remain in charge of our own data? Are there ways to escape the digital dystopia? Director Marije Meerman borrows the glasses of activists, predictors and science fiction writers and travels the world in search of digital escape routes and political strategies for resistance and sabotage. Are we the last generation who have experienced privacy and freedom as a normal part of life? How do we get through the new digital reality? With critic and author of "The Net Delusion: How Not to Liberate the World" Evgeny Morozov, science fiction author Charlie Stross, The Pirate Bay founder and activist Peter Sunde, author and politician for the Pirates Party Anke Domscheit-Berg and IT Security Consultant Eleanor Saitta. The new wisdom of Richardo Semler - VPRO documentary - 2015

47:25
Ricardo Semler pleads for the inside of the box thinking. From his impressive estate, he shows the viewer a new spectacular view. We are smarter than ever, but have we become wiser? The economy is totally disregarded, capitalism has nowhere led to equivalence; the 6 largest companies in the world are worth more than the 60 poorest countries together. Why isn't it possible to create a better world? It is the braincracker of visionary Ricardo Semler. In VPRO backlight, he outlines the confrontational conditions for an era of Wisdom. Previously, we saw in 'The Capital of Happiness' how the beloved Brazilian top entrepreneur Ricardo Semler focused on happiness and love in management and business. He built a world empire with the simple question, how are my employees really happy? Employees are nowadays well-informed and capable of recognizing and solving problems themselves or not in a group that is connected through networks and iPhone. Nevertheless, we remain in fear of chaos in business and government and continue to appoint managers and intermediaries to alleviate the fears. In VPRO Backlight, non-conformist Ricardo Semler bends on these issues. How can we turn classical management into dogmas and pyramids? Semler makes a plea for the inside of the box thinking and living. From the place where he comes to his ideas, his own impressive estate on a mountain near Sao Paulo, he shows the viewer a new spectacular spectacle. Backlight dwells further into Ricardo Semler's world, a world in which wisdom, intuition and inside the box think more than ever before should take a central position. The Day the Dollar Falls - VPRO documentary - 2005

49:44
Do we live on a bubble? Is it possible for the heavily indebted American economy to collapse and take all of us down in a free fall with it? Have the days of the dollar been counted? Is it really unimaginable that we will see the time of the Great Depression repeating itself? VPRO Backlight and Dutch national newspaper NRC Handelsblad present this 'what if' scenario. What if the dollar collapses? Fiction meets facts in this 24 hour scenario. At 9AM a Singapore trader is ordered to sell a large amount of dollars, which sends off the enormous downfall of the dollar. This film shows the results for the world economy every following hour. It ends in Amsterdam, where the only currency accepted by a taxi driver is cigarettes. History seems to have caught up with this 2005 film, though in slow-motion. The documentary includes interview with analyst Stephen Roach, Andy Xie, Maarten Schinkel, Cees Maas, Rob de Wijk and Kees Vendrik. Lessons from Lehman and the Coming Crash - Docu - 2018

44:14
Have we learned the Lessons from Lehman and could we have predicted the Coming Crash? Ten years ago, the crash on Wall Street took us by surprise when Lehman Brothers' bank went bankrupt. The financial crisis that followed this crash on Wall Street was like a chain reaction; a pole dancer with her five mortgages turned out to be connected to the huge gap in the Greek national budget. Is it possible to predict the coming crash? What are the lessons learned from the collapse of Lehman Brothers? Can we predict the coming crash of Wall Street by looking back to the last 10 years and take a lesson from Lehman? A new investigative financial documentary by VPRO Backlight. Original title: Silence before the cra$h Sometimes, it is important to look back in order to predict what we might be heading for. Ten years ago, we were taken by surprise when Lehman Brothers' investment bank went bankrupt. In the followinf months, banks needed saving. Millions of tax payers money was used. Worldwide, banks, villages, cities, and even countries went bankrupt or were hanging by a thread. Few, if any, bankers were convicted. Crypto currencies like bitcoins thrived on the growing suspicion towards banks and governments. Finally, central banks around the world set up buying asset purchasing programmes in order to create cash out of nothing. A strategy to pump money into the financial system, hoping to keep it afloat. What have we learned from this crash and its consequences? Over a period of ten years, VPRO Backlight reported on the snowballing financial crisis. It turned out that a journalist, a former banker and an economist had predicted the 2008 credit crash and are now warning against a new crash. We pay them another visit to find out what they had seen, where many others were blind. If we look hard enough, can we see why we are now in the calm before the next crash? With: Nomi Prins (author & ex banker Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers), Ann Petifor (Economist) and Isabella Kaminska (journalist Financial Times) with cameo's by Jim Rogers (super investor), Roger Ver (bitcoin-evangelist), Joris Luyendijk (journalist) & Yanis Varoufakis (former minister of finance Greece). With more than 2.2 million views on the VPRO Documentary YouTube channel only, Marije Meerman publishes a new financial documentary, looking back into Wall Street, and talks with financial analysts and specialists worldwide about predicting a potentially coming crash. Marije Meerman's previous financial documentaries are also available on this channel: Quants - The alchemists of Wall Street, The Wall Street code, and Flash Crash 2010. Digital Food: The Food Industry Of Tomorrow - Docu

46:58
What will the food industry of tomorrow look like and how will the food industry keep up with the growing population? Food industry will use more technology in the future to ensure enough food for everyone. But how will we produce digital food and how will the food industry do this without fossil fuels? We like to eat more local, sustainable food but we also have more mouths to feed. In 2050 the population will have reached 9 billion people. How do we make sure that everybody has good food and enough to eat? Digital solutions will help to put a new mix of high-tech and low-tech ingredients on our plate sooner than we think. We will still need to garden, but there will be more and more technology we will rely on. Modern food production is largely dependent on fossil fuels. Now that we are beginning to reach the end of the fossil fuel era, the main question remains: How will we feed a global population of 9 billion people in 2050? In the Netherlands, Belgium and in Silicon Valley, numerous startups have decided to use smart technology, big data, and new distribution systems to find solutions for this issue. The documentary explores tomorrow's food, which not only needs to be sustainable, tasty and organic, but mainly nutritious and above all sufficient for all earthlings. Will the approach of this new generation of food startups help us to ensure the necessary quantity and quality of food in the future? In this documentary about the future food industry, we meet sustainable food guru Michael Pollan, chef Dan Barber, and philosopher Julian Baggini. Aftermath of a crisis - VPRO documentary - 2011

48:24
Shortly after the beginning of the financial crisis of 2008 sociologist Manuel Castells gathered a small group of international top intellectuals to ponder the crisis. While the crisis expanded, Castells named his group 'The Aftermath Network', a reference to the new world which according to him will emerge from the ashes of the crisis. Members of the Aftermath Network think there is not only a financial and economic crisis, but also a social and cultural crisis that brings a fundamental change in the European and American societies. How is it that, three years after the fall of Lehman Brothers and the subsequent rescue of banks with public money, the public sector is suffering from extreme austerity while the banking sector continues to make big profits? What has one to do with the other? The thinkers of Aftermath come together every summer in Lisbon. Meanwhile, the crisis is changing radically. Manuel Castells (sociologist), Terhi Rantanen (communication scientist), Michel Wieviorka (sociologist), Sarah Banet -Weiser (cultural scientist), Rosalind Williams (historian) and John Thompson (sociologist) analyze the crisis in all its forms and offer new, surprising perspectives. People, power and Varoufakis - VPRO documentary - 2016

47:03
Yanis Varoufakis, former Greek minister of finance has started a grassroots pan-european movement listening more to what the people wants. When Varoufakis presented his new movement DiEM25, he took up the fight with the financial sector and the large companies which, according to him, are cannibalising politics. His movement is gaining support from the people rapidly over Europe. Original title: Volk, macht en Varoufakis If the European leaders won’t listen to the citizens of the 28 countries that make up the Union, it will disintegrate before long, says Greek economist and former minister of Finance Yanis Varouvakis. What is the most frightening thing for the political order in Europe? It's not terrorism, neither migration nor the international competitive position: it’s democracy. That is why Varoufakis started a political movement, which is rapidly joined by all sorts of civil initiative organisations, from Berlin to Zagreb. What would a new, truly democratic Europe look like? As a minister, Varouvakis noticed that a politician doesn’t have any real power: real power lies with the people who control the economy. The City of London is a state within the British state, so it’s a model representing the power of corporate Europe and the end of democracy. It’s a situation which is growing out of control, says German sociologist Wolfgang Streeck. In great detail he explains how we, using increasingly innovative financial manoeuvres, have bought off a political crisis in Europe and postponed the ‘day of reckoning’. Another example lays in the Spanish town of Pontevedra, where former resident and prime minister of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, has been declared persona non grata. Rajoy granted a sixty-year concession for a large piece of coastal property to an extremely polluting paper mill. This is a typical example of how the old corrupted politics worked. The local population are not going to take it anymore. Democracy is a greek word: demos (the people), kratia (power, rule). Does Varouvakis’ pan-European movement stand a chance? Can it really create change and save democracy? With: Wolfgang Streeck (German sociologist), Yanis Varouvakis (Greek economist and former minister of Finance), Migual Anxo Lores (mayor of Pontevredra, Spain) and Mark Boleat (City of London lobbyist). Producing the fairphone - VPRO documentary - 2016

47:05
Designer Bas van Abel decided to create a mobile phone, while exploiting man and nature as little as possible. The dilemma’s he encountered while manufacturing his Fairphone are lessons for everyone who strives to run a fair company. ‘If you can’t open it, you don’t own it’ is Bas van Abel’s motto. He wanted to know why telephone manufacturers supply a hermetically sealed black box that we as consumers are not allowed to open. In the Chinese city of Shenzhen, Van Abel tries to understand the innovative recycling and creative culture. Over the last five years, hundreds or even thousands of small factories have become so good at manufacturing, copying and repairing, that China now has grand ambitions to flood the world with its own designs and to manufacture telephones that are better than the existing brands. Van Abel soon finds out that it’s easier to realise his ideas once he starts his own company that actually makes phones. The Fairphone is born. From that moment on, his life is turned upside down. Connecting Brains: The BrainNet - VPRO documentary - 2014

49:39
Can we connect human brains together? What are the limits of what we can do with our brain? Is BrainNet our future? In science fiction movies, scientists' brains are downloaded into computers and criminal brains are connected to the Internet. Interesting, but how does it work in real life? Original title: The greedy brain Scientific journalist Rob van Hattum wondered what information we can truly get from our brain and came across an extraordinary scientific experience. An experiment where the brains of two rats were directly connected: one rat was in the United States and the other rat was in Brazil. They could influence the brain of the other directly. Miguel Nicolelis is the Brazilian neurologist who conducted this experiment. In his book 'Beyond Boundaries' he describes his special experiences in detail and predicts that it should be possible to create a kind of BrainNet. For Backlight, Rob van Hattum went to Sao Paulo and also visited all Dutch neuroscientists, looking for what the future holds for our brain. He connected his own brain to computers and let it completely be scanned, searching for the limits of reading out the brain. The true cost of flying - VPRO documentary

47:50
The costs of flying seem to become less and less. But does this reflect reality? Corresponds the price for the ticket with the true cost of flying? Or is the true cost of flying a price we will pay later? What the true cost of flying really consists of, that is the main topic of this documentary. Flying has become so cheap due to a fierce price war and years of government subsidies. As a result, in the drop of prices passenger numbers have increased dramatically. Due to this flying is under threat of becoming the greatest single source of pollution. After years of delays the electric automobile is finally beginning to become more popular, but where is the green revolution in the skies? The Paris Climate Agreement did not even include current or future emissions from international airline traffic. Meanwhile, for half a century government have continued with airline subsidies by keeping tickets free of VAT and not charging excise taxes on fuel. How can governments continue to ignore the airplane as being the greatest single polluter of the future and yet still create ambitious environmental goals? And what is the alternative? It`s high time to go in search of the green airplane pioneers. They are now still working somewhat secluded on a technological revolution of hybrid and electrically-powered airplanes. For decades surprisingly, little fundamental innovation has taken place with the big boys Boeing and Airbus in the area of preservation. But just as in the days of the Wright brothers’ passionate pioneers are currently experimenting with small airplanes and are already making their first test flights. Only now powered by hybrid and electric engines, with a goal of creating engines, batteries, and wings strong enough to transport a growing number of passengers. Their future dream is that one day we will be able to transport much more by air with far greater ease, but then cleaner, more quietly and sustainable. With: Dr. Frank Anton (director Siemens e-Aircraft), Ivo Boscarol (CEO Pipistrel), Thomas Rau (architect), Paul Peeters (chief university professor Tourism & Transport), Tine Tomažič (Pipistrel), Gary Smith, (EasyJet), Matthijs van Miltenburg (European parliament member for D66) and Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy (European parliament member for D66) Original title: De prijs van vliegen Originally broadcasted by VPRO in 2018. © VPRO Backlight 14mei 2018 On VPRO broadcast you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series. Seeds battles - The Doomsday vault - VPRO documentary - 2013

50:20
Hidden deep inside a massive mountain in inhospitable Spitsbergen is the most important vault in the world: the Global Seed Vault also known as The Doomsday vault. It is 20 degrees below zero and the vault is able to withstand earthquakes, floods, missile attacks and nuclear disaster. It’s Noah’s Ark for our food production with the largest diversity in seeds from all over the world, a backup of as many crops as possible and the toolbox for seed breeders. This is vital, for by 2050 there will be 9 billion mouths to feed. This ‘Doomsday Vault’, and its worldwide mission, is the life’s work of the inspired American professor Cary Fowler. In February 2013, on the occasion of the vault’s five-year anniversary, he met with an international management committee in Spitsbergen to discuss the current deadlock. Backlight gains an insight into the worldwide political and strategic game that is being played. The stakes: our daily bread. The new chinese world order - VPRO documentary - 2016

46:58
For some time now, the establishment of the World Bank and IMF has had a Chinese counterpart: AIIB, which China intends to use to finance a huge infrastructure project to connect Asia and Europa, a New Silk Route. This new international financial institution forces Europe to take a side. The UK decided, against the urgent advice from the United States, to become a member, and also the Netherlands has joined the Chinese initiative. According to China watcher Martin Jacques, this is the beginning of a new Chinese world order. Original Title: Chinese Wereldorde While Europe is being tested by a tragic economic crisis, terrorist attacks and refugees at the gates, the founding meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the New Development Bank has been quite unnoticed. These are two new multilateral financial institutions that challenge the current order of the World Bank and the IMF. Both are led by China and are set up to bring the world-dominated World Bank and IMF down. After the British became members of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, due to economic opportunities, the Netherlands, France and Germany also followed. The importance of this, initially, British shift of foreign policy is difficult to underestimate. The United States feels this is a direct threat to their sphere of influence. "The biggest diplomatic battle since the Second World War between the US and its main ally," said journalist and China expert Martin Jacques about the surprising British step. And symptomatic of a new world order. But how does the Chinese influence differ from the American influence? Will Europe become a pawn in the battle between the two influence spheres? Peter Diamandis: A future of Abundance - Docu - 2013

50:29
While the world is in crisis, there is a man who thinks the future is as bright as it can be. Peter Diamandis, author of the book Abundance and co-founder of Singularity University, sees how technology can soon provide all basic needs such as energy, clean drinking water and food for the growing world population, with ease. Original title: Overvloed But the ideas of Peter Diamandis go beyond specific technological solutions. He sees a world in which technological developments will be moving at an ever higher rate. As in the field of healthcare, where the use of data and smartphones make it possible to monitor one's health, not once in a while, but constant. The consequences of this are hardly visible to many. This documentary explores the world of ever faster growing technological development, in which major changes can happen overnight, and investigates if technological developments that are just around the corner will be able to solve the world’s major problems within the next 20 to 30 years. Will we soon live in a world of abundance? The fight against ecocide - VPRO documentary - 2015

47:57
Original tile: The Earth's Lawyer Our world knows four international crimes: war crimes, genocide, torture and crimes against humanity. Spanish examining magistrate Baltasar Garzón and Scottish lawyer Polly Higgins believe that this list of serious violations of international law should be expanded with a fifth: ecocide. Will Higgins and Garzón eventually succeed in gaining enough support to get recognition for ecocide? Scottish Polly Higgins was laughed at when she first proclaimed that the Earth needs a lawyer. That those who cause ecological destruction should be held accountable, and therefore be sued, summoned and punished. Originally a trial lawyer, Higgins now entirely devotes her life and work to the Earth, as a legal eco-activist. Since 2011, she has been leading the international movement against ecocide. This is the large-scale destruction of our ecosystems. VPRO Backlight follows Polly Higgins and her ‘earth guardians’ on their missions throughout 2015, a year that, more than any other year, offers a ‘window of opportunity'. Including Baltasar Garzón (jurist), Michael Baumgartner (campaign manager Greenpeace Switzerland), Bronwyn Lay (environmental lawyer, Australia). The Human Robot - VPRO documentary - 2015

49:01
How scared do we actually have to be for smart and social robots? If you ask western people what they think about robots, they are rather reluctant or even a little scared to answer. In Japan it’s completely the opposite, the Japanese love robots. In Japan, all objects – including the robots – have a ‘soul’. This means that in Japan human robots, or intelligent robots will be accepted much easier than in the West. In this VPRO Backlight story director Rob van Hattum investigates the frameworks that determine the boundaries of how we see smart and social robots. American philosopher Daniel Dennett is convinced humans themselves are robots made from robots, made from robots, made from robots. Human cells and parts of the cells can be seen as robot systems. He says our brain is a hardware robot platform that is being filled with the software of our culture and that is what makes us intelligent. Dutch social robotics professor Vanessa Evers is building social robots that approach you with understanding, that really understand what you mean. These robots can help you with a museum tour or point the way in an airport. Naho Kitano is CEO of a company that designs ‘snake robots’ that can look for people in collapsed buildings. But as a sociologist she has extensively been studying robot ethics, trying to answer the question why ‘the West’ is so much more scared of robots than the Japanese.
