Aftermath of a crisis - VPRO documentary - 2011

48:24
Shortly after the beginning of the financial crisis of 2008 sociologist Manuel Castells gathered a small group of international top intellectuals to ponder the crisis. While the crisis expanded, Castells named his group 'The Aftermath Network', a reference to the new world which according to him will emerge from the ashes of the crisis. Members of the Aftermath Network think there is not only a financial and economic crisis, but also a social and cultural crisis that brings a fundamental change in the European and American societies. How is it that, three years after the fall of Lehman Brothers and the subsequent rescue of banks with public money, the public sector is suffering from extreme austerity while the banking sector continues to make big profits? What has one to do with the other? The thinkers of Aftermath come together every summer in Lisbon. Meanwhile, the crisis is changing radically. Manuel Castells (sociologist), Terhi Rantanen (communication scientist), Michel Wieviorka (sociologist), Sarah Banet -Weiser (cultural scientist), Rosalind Williams (historian) and John Thompson (sociologist) analyze the crisis in all its forms and offer new, surprising perspectives. After Democracy: what now? - VPRO documentary - 2010

48:56
Original title: After Democracy Can democracy still be saved? Can we address the shortcomings of representative democracy -- failing political parties, increasing distrust of government -- within the current system or are we set to embark on a journey across a border where nobody ever dared to go? An analysis by people who should know: starting with Fareed Zakaria, the diagnosis that he suggested: political control is impossible because politicians have to answer for 24 hours a day and are too dependent on an increasingly fickle electorate. Followed by political scientist John Keane, who chronicled the history of democracy and describes the current phase as 'monitory democracy'. Where transparency is a great thing and citizens control the power in numerous ways. What lessons does the past teach, according to Keane? Should we explore a new political model in order to overcome the current multi crises? In After Democracy this urgent question is addressed by Fareed Zakaria, John Keane, Hilary Wainwright, William Dobson and Cheng Li. Debt and Redemption - VPRO documentary - 2010

47:24
All over Europe, governments dressed up their accounts by buying exotic financial products from major investment banks. Then came the crash. Debt and Redemption shows how local authorities in Italy are struggling with the disastrous aftermath of their deals. The city of Milan has decided to strike back by charging four banks with fraud. The banks, as a matter of course, deny any wrongdoing. Marije Meerman visits Milan and the village Pollino Italy and travels to the US, where she speaks to writer/journalist Matt Taibbi (Rolling Stone, Griftopia), investor/blogger Reggie Middleton's (Boombustblog) and former IMF economist Simon Johnson (13 Bankers: The Wall Street Takeover and the Next Financial Meltdown).
