1.8 Million Year Old "Nuclear Reactor" Found In Africa?
Support Us On Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/MysteryHistory We Are Also On Steemit: https://steemit.com/@mysteryhistory 1.8 Billion years, apologies. In 1972, a French factory began importing high quality, rare uranium ore from Oklo, in Africa’s Gabon Republic. Many quickly began to wonder where they had acquired such a difficult thing to make. It turned out that the uranium had come from a place which should have rewritten the history books, yet, it seems to have been quietly brushed into the archives of the past. They found the site of origin had functioned as a large-scale nuclear reactor, amazingly though, this reactor was I operation some 1.8 billion years ago, and was functioning for over 500,000 years. These unbelievable claims were not made lightly, or indeed by anybody, they were conclusions by some of the greatest minds on earth. For example, Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg, former head of the United States Atomic Energy Commission, and Nobel Prize winner for his work in the synthesis of heavy elements… Explained to the press why he believed it wasn’t a natural phenomenon, and must have been man-made nuclear reactor. He stated that for uranium to burn in a reaction, very precise conditions are needed. The water must be extremely pure, much purer than exists anywhere naturally. The material U-235 is also necessary for this type of nuclear fission to occur, one of the isotopes not found naturally in uranium. Additionally, several specialists in reactor engineering have also come forward to testify that they believe the uranium in Oklo, could not have been rich in U-235 enough for a reaction to take place naturally, it must have, somehow, been a man-made operation. And new research has only deepened the mystery, confirming that water regulated the nuclear reactions in a cyclic pattern similar to that of a geyser. Alex Meshik and his colleagues at Washington University of St. Louis have determined that the Oklo reactor, which comprises of several separate sites, ran for 30 minutes and then shut off for 2.5 hours, before starting over. "The time is characteristic of water infiltrating rocks and then being boiled off once reactions started," Meshik told the press. When the water all boiled away, the reactions stopped until new water percolated back down, this geyser-like activity also prevented a runaway reaction. "It's amazing it didn't explode," Meshik said. "Instead it efficiently released energy in short pulses, for an extremely long period of time." The nuclear fuel at Oklo was uranium - specifically U-235, and currently, U-235 only makes up about 0.7 percent of the uranium found naturally on Earth. Just who could have possibly been around over a 1,8 billion years ago? Or more specifically, able to enrich uranium and create nuclear power? Is man’s history on earth really that old? It seems, according to numerous nuclear specialists, and the compelling evidence they present, that is exactly the case. Did The Navy Build A Secret Underwater Base To Hide Submarines From Russia?
This video shows you that Did The Navy Build A Secret Underwater Base To Hide Submarines From Russia?. Austin foresaw that Rock-Site bases could be ideal for industrial uses such as fossil-fuel production and deep-sea mining. In the decades since Austin’s study, industry has created the tools need to realize his vision. Though it’s not atomic-powered, the world’s largest tunnel-boring machine is about to drill a two-mile-long tunnel beneath Seattle wide enough to hold an Ohio-class sub. Point Sur is 600 feet of tough rock facing Pacific rollers that come 6,000 miles to pound the central California coast. Like the 19th-century lighthouse that marks the Point, the now-derelict compound of the former Naval Facility Point Sur evokes another era. And it evokes a mystery — one involving secret underground naval bases, high-tech submarines and Cold War nuclear brinkmanship. As late as the 1960s, Navy technicians and their families at Point Sur monitored undersea listening posts used to track Soviet subs. According to one legend, it wasn’t merely hydrophones the Navy ran from Point Sur, but submarines themselves based in giant man-made caverns dug into the rock. There is something mythic and compelling about seashore scarps and naval bases — something drawing on archetypal imagery of treasure concealed in cave waters open to the sea. The ultimate supervillain’s lair, after all, is an island base with undersea access. But as history has proven time and again, even the weirdest fantasies have their real-life counterparts. And those who dive for Atlantean gold sometimes surface with treasure. There really were — and are — some strange ideas deep down in the sea. By 1966 the two surges into outer space and “inner space” were at their flood tide. While NASA gathered ever more momentum with monthly Gemini flights and a new Mission Control, the success of Sealab II and the CONSHELF III underwater habitat led to a presidential commission on oceanography and a bigger undersea commitment. The Navy’s efforts to recover a lost hydrogen bomb off the coast of Spain that year and the loss of the attack sub USS Thresher three years before had brought new funding and discipline to deep submergence systems. In such heady times, dreams of colonizing the continental shelf within a generation seemed like sober predictions. It was in this environment that C.F. Austin of the China Lake Naval Ordnance Test Station proposed the Rock-Site concept: manned undersea installations excavated into the rock of the seafloor. By applying well-understood principles employed for decades by the mining industry, Austin proposed that large bases could be constructed and operated anywhere suitable bedrock occurred in the ocean, at any depth. ====================================================================================================== DISCLAIMER: Each and every content used in this video is not imaginary. Coal mine head surrenders after covering up fatal landslide
A coal mine head turned himself in to police early Tuesday after failing to report a landslide that left at least four people dead and another five missing on Friday, according to authorities in north China's Shanxi Province. Gao Yang, legal representative and general manager of Lyuxin coal mine, surrendered himself to police at 0:52 a.m. and confessed that 10 people had been buried in the accident, which occurred at around 3 p.m. on Aug. 11 at the open-pit coal mine in Heshun County, a spokesperson with the county government said. One person has been rescued and four bodies have been retrieved, according to Gao. A man who had been detained for "fabricating information online" about the accident was released Tuesday. The county government had visited the landslide site twice to investigate the online report, but the company had told them no one had been buried in the landslide. The county's coal administration head Zhang Ruiqing, who led the investigations, has been removed from his post. Rescue work and further investigation are under way.

How Did Nuclear Power Come To Dominate US Energy Leaving 15,000 Abandoned Uranium Mines (Pt. 1)
The following news piece represents the first in a 15 part mini-series titled, Nuclear Power in Our World Today, featuring nuclear authority and world expert, nuclear engineer and whistleblower Arnie Gundersen of Fairewinds Energy. The EnviroNews USA special encompasses a wide span of topics, ranging from Manhattan-era madness to the continuously unfolding crisis on the ground at Fukushima Daiichi in eastern Japan. Our journey extends outward from a bombshell interview conducted by EnviroNews Editor-in-Chief Emerson Urry, with the esteemed nuclear expert, whistleblower, and expert witness Arnie Gundersen. Gundersen is a nuclear engineer, as well as a former power plant operator, and trade executive, whose own life, for a good amount of time, was ruined by the nuclear industry after he exposed radioactive safety violations. So to get this series rolling, here’s what Gundersen revealed to Emerson Urry. We were talking about Fukushima and obviously the myriad isotopes that are put off as a byproduct of the nuclear fission that is happening in the reactor. It all starts there with the uranium, and there was quite a rush for that, and now we have all of these situations. To our understanding there are about 15,000 abandoned uranium mines that have been left in complete ruin with very little cleanup or remediation at all, just in the western United States. This has happened, by-and-large, because of an antiquated mining bill – the 1872 Mining Bill. Gundersen: I’ll give you another example of the same thing, and I would say “yes” to everything you said is the quick answer. There is a mill-tailings site in Moab, Utah. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission told the owner of the site that they needed to set aside six million dollars to clean it up. Well, the actual cleanup is a billion dollars. What did the owner do? They declared bankruptcy and walked away. Urry: And it wasn’t bonded? No bond? Gundersen: Right. It wasn’t bonded. You know, if you bonded uranium mining, you wouldn’t have uranium mining. Urry: Because nobody would probably… Gundersen: The way our system is set up is that you take the profit early, and then when everything is done you walk away and the government takes the risk. So, we’ve socialized the risk, and the capitalists make the profit early on and the rest of us pick up the cost afterward. And that’s historically true on the Navajo reservation especially – but you get in the Black Hills and the Lakota Sioux… When Gundersen said the brunt of these mines are on Native American lands, he wasn’t kidding. All of these are abandoned open-pit uranium mines. 397 in Montana, 2103 in Wyoming, 113 in North Dakota, 272 in South Dakota, and 387 in northern Colorado, for a total of 3272. This is an abandoned open-pit uranium mine on the southwestern edge of the Black Hills. The thing about the Darrow Pits Mine is that they are only 40 miles from Mt. Rushmore. Millions of tourists travel to Mt. Rushmore every year not knowing that they are breathing in radioactive dust, and the water that they drink in the motels in Rapid City contains uranium. Recently, March 2013, the U.S. Forest Service finally issued a public safety closure order because of the dangers to human health. Among the particles that are in there are arsenic, molybdenum, thorium, radium and uranium. These are all in the form of dust or runoff, and they are picked up by the wind. Our levels were very very high compared to Chernobyl. The radiation levels in parts I visited with my students were higher than those in the evacuated zones around the Fukushima nuclear disaster.” Higher. Fukushima radiation levels were higher than Chernobyl. The Northern Great Plains’ levels are higher than Fukushima — and these are not from nuclear power plants or from an atomic weapon, or atomic bomb being exploded. These are from 2,885 abandoned open-pit uranium mines and prospects, and we are subject to that radioactive pollution constantly. All of these abandoned open-pit uranium mines in the Northern Great Plains are affecting everyone, but they are genocide for the Great Sioux Nation — for my people. This is genocide. Contact your congressman, your senators. Ask them to pass a bill to clean up all the abandoned uranium mines in all of the United States. US Navy achieves unprecedented level of stealth
Please watch: "Disney's Drone Technology | Episode 1 | PatentYogi Research" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm06Vc43yGE -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Quantum Entanglement to provide unprecedented level of stealth for military applications. A recent patent from US Navy reveals details of their awesome quantum photonic imaging device to detect of underwater objects. The patented invention would provide complete stealth during operation. The invention uses quantum entanglement as a means to achieve detection of reflected radiation at levels that are below the noise level. In a way, this is similar to how CDMA works by spreading information under the noise floor making it virtually indistinguishable from noise until it's correlated with the correct code sequence. Just like that, the patented device generates a pair of entangled photons one of which (call it "probe photon") is transmitted towards a target. The probe photon is reflected by the target. The reflected radiation which includes noise is then correlated with the other photon of the pair. Only when the reflected radiation includes a reflection of the probe photon, the correlation with the other photon is high, which indicates presence of an object. Multiple pairs of entangled photons are used to determine range and geometry of the target object. The target object can be an Arctic ice canopy, ocean bottom, and another natural or artificial obstacle in the water that can obstruct under-ice passage of the vehicle in Arctic waters. The patented device is particularly useful under Arctic sea-ice canopy, where conventional current underwater navigation systems fail. Conventional arctic underwater vehicles use an (detection systems employ) active sonar array to avoid an accidental collision with the ice canopy. However, in the case of Arctic military operations, active sonar will give away the position of the submarine.

The tribe, intervening in the license renewal application for the mine inDawes County, Nebraska, adjacent to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, argued that the staff recommended approval in violation of its rights under the National Historic Preservation Act and National Environmental Protection Act, or NEPA.” “Woo hoo!” she said: “A federal agency determined a foreign company did not properly consult with First Nations.” Crow Butte Mine is a decades-old project of the world’s largest publicly traded uranium mining company, the Canadian Cameco Corp., which is facing federal tax-dodging allegations in its home country and an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service over $32 million in U.S. back taxes. The company is reducing uranium wellfield development at its Wyoming operations, as its stock values are crashing.”

Coming to South Dakota? Bring your own Drinking Water! - PSA (2013)
Coming to South Dakota? Bring your own Drinking Water! - PSA (2013) Please support our efforts - "Say NO to Uranium Mining!" Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, Hot Springs South Dakota www.wildmustangs.com About the PSA - "Governments and the uranium industry say the mining and milling of uranium provides high-paying and much-needed jobs in some of the most remote areas of the country, with manageable environmental risks. But it's an industry that has long attracted its share of controversy. This is a major concern for the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in western South Dakota, and other residents including environmental and conservation groups. The Sierra Club of South Dakota warns that water pollution will be a major concern if the mining company Powertech is given a permit to mine for uranium. The Sierra Club's Black Hills Group, says there's a high likelihood that aquifers will become polluted if an injection-well recovery system is used to mine the ore. Powertech Inc USA has submitted its uranium mining application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and it can be viewed at the NRC website. The NRC has announced a time period for interested individuals to voice their concerns regarding the uranium mine's impacts to the environment. This proposed uranium mine will be the first time folks can be heard under the new GEIS. "It's going to be my last great battle, but I'm going to win this one." says Hyde. The Institute of Range and American Mustang owns 13,000 acres of private land dedicated to range preservation and a balanced ecosystem. I.R.A.M.'s finest gift is the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary; whose purpose is to provide not only freedom for unadoptable and unwanted wild horses, but also a research area dedicated to solving wild horse herd management that will contribute to the well-being of wild horses everywhere. Military Colonel:Rare video! Fast Attack submarine Troops United States military control . This video features an American 688 class submarine making a relatively rare extended transit on the surface of the water (these boats are known to spend many weeks at a time submerged). The Los Angeles-class is among the most sophisticated vessels of their type in the world. While anti-submarine attack/warfare is their primary role, their inherent speed, endurance, stealth and mobility means that they can carry out varied missions; such as gathering intelligence, deploying Special Forces, laying mines or striking land targets with their Tomahawk cruise missiles. Ben Fulford and David Wilcock on Russian TV: Cabal Defeat is Looming
Get Ascension Updates here: http://dwilcock.com 21 million people in Russia and neighboring countries watched REN-TV reveal the imminent defeat of the New World Order in this stunning expose' with Ben Fulford and David Wilcock. This three-hour 8PM documentary revealed how 26 underground bases were mysteriously destroyed between August 22, 2011 and January 2012 -- and explores who may have done it. The Russians explore uncomfortable truths with remarkable new detail and clarity, including the transfer of Nazi scientists to America after World War II under Project Paperclip. Never before has a major television series so thoroughly revealed the international alliance that has formed to encircle and defeat the Cabal. Neil Keenan's epic multi-billion-dollar lawsuit against the United Nations and other Cabal entities is discussed, as well as Fulford's own efforts to organize resistance efforts. Learn how the Federal Reserve deliberately created World War I and II to seize the world's gold -- and create a limitless supply of "bubble money" that could be printed out of thin air. The documentary ultimately stops short of naming BRICS -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- as the public face of this new alliance against the Federal Reserve. This alliance apparently now encompasses a majority of all countries in the world. The staff of REN-TV told us this show was wildly popular, reaching a stunning 21 million viewers. It is fast-paced and has an intense, dramatic musical score with lots of visuals. You may want to laugh or think this is all "crazy" -- but it was taken seriously enough to be developed into a major, prime-time special on a top Russian network. As David often has said, "if you throw up, you'll feel better" is a good analogy for what we all must learn in order to heal our planet. Without awareness there can be no resolution. David Wilcock | Corey Goode: The Antarctic Atlantis [MUST SEE LIVE DISCLOSURE!]
Are we about to hear that ancient ruins have been found in Antarctica? Is there an Alliance working to defeat the greatest threat humanity has ever faced on earth? Could the Antarctic Atlantis be part of a full or partial disclosure? Join David Wilcock on a thrill ride of discovery, beginning with Part One where he presents data on the Secret Space Program and shares the stage with legendary insider Corey Goode. This is the best public summary David and Corey have done of this amazing story that has captivated the UFO community. Part Two begins at the 53-minute mark, with David connecting the dots between intel from multiple insiders to arrive at a stunning conclusion -- that we are on the verge of major new releases of information that will transform everything we thought we knew about life on earth. A civilization of "Pre-Adamite" giants with elongated skulls appears to have crash-landed on a continent we now call Antarctica some 55,000 years ago. Various groups we collectively call the Alliance are working to defeat the Cabal / Illuminati / New World Order, thus making the headlines crazier by the day. If the Alliance succeeds, their plan is now to begin the disclosure process by telling us there was a civilization in Antarctica. We are already seeing multiple, compelling hints of this in corporate media. Find out what the insiders are telling us and help spread the word! This is a two-and-a-half-hour excerpt from David's Friday and Saturday presentations at the Conscious Life Expo 2017. In their original form they run six hours. David also spoke for three hours on Monday, presenting an incredible new model of the Cosmos based on sacred geometry -- and proving that the Sun is going to release a DNA-transforming burst of energy in our near future. County Seat Episode 28 Wolves Delisted
The de-listing of the wolf has made a big impact on how wolf management takes place in the Northern Counties of Utah (Cach, Rich, parts of Weber and Box Elder Counties), but the D listing is not all that simple. Ranchers who were losing livestock are excited to see management turned back over to the state, local governments are glad that they will be able to manage the wolves, and those who want to protect the wolf are worried that this may lead to more dead wolves. Here with the report is Malia Bascom.

Poseidon Missile Launch Tube Preparation - U.S. NAVY SUBMARINE 20960
This declassified film shows some of the steps used in preparation of the Poseidon Missile Launcher Tube aboard submarines. The Poseidon missile was the second US Navy ballistic missile system, powered by a two-stage solid fuel rocket. It succeeded the Polaris missile beginning in 1972, bringing major advances in warheads and accuracy. It was followed by Trident I in 1979, and Trident II in 1990. A development study for a longer range version of the Polaris missile achieved by enlarging it to the maximum possible size allowed by existing launch tubes started in 1963. Tests had already shown that Polaris missiles could be operated without problems in launch tubes that had their fiberglass liners and locating rings removed. The project was given the title Polaris B3 in November, but the missile was eventually named Poseidon C3 to emphasize the technical advances over its predecessor. The C3 was the only version of the missile produced, and it was also given the designation UGM-73A. Slightly longer and considerably wider and heavier than Polaris A3, Poseidon had the same 4,600 kilometres (2,500 nmi) range, greater payload capacity, improved accuracy, and MIRV capability. Poseidon could deliver up to fourteen W68 thermonuclear warheads[1] contained in Mark 3 reentry vehicles to multiple targets. The high-re-entry-speed design was intended to counter Sprint-type terminal ABM defenses. See Atmospheric re-entry for blunt body theory. The low-yield warheads were apparently selected to make the weapon unsuitable as a first-strike weapon against hardened targets in the Soviet Union, but could be used in a retaliatory strike against soft targets, or in a preemptive strike against unhardened surface targets such as airfields, SAM sites, radar sites and other similar targets, opening a pathway for heavy bombers. In later years this targeting technique has been demonstrated by the use of cruise missiles to neutralize airfields, SAM sites etc. in the opening phases of the Gulf War. As with Polaris, starting a rocket motor when the missile was still in the submarine was considered very dangerous. Therefore, the missile was ejected from its launch tube using high pressure steam produced by a solid-fueled boiler. The main rocket motor ignited automatically when the missile had risen approximately 10 metres (33 ft) above the submarine. The first test launch took place on 16 August 1968, the first successful at-sea launch was from a surface ship, the historic USNS Observation Island (from July 1 to December 16, 1969), earning the ship the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the first test launch from a submarine took place on the USS James Madison on 3 August 1970. The weapon officially entered service on 31 March 1971. It eventually equipped 31 Lafayette-, James Madison-, and Benjamin Franklin-class submarines. Beginning in 1979, 12 Poseidon-equipped SSBNs were refitted with Trident I. By 1992, the Soviet Union had collapsed, 12 Ohio-class submarines had been commissioned, and the START I treaty had gone into effect, so the 31 older Poseidon- and Trident I-armed SSBNs were disarmed, withdrawing Poseidon from service. About 620 UGM-73A missiles were built between 1970 and 1978. MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD? - China's Rare Earth Minerals Consolidation
The cost of many rare earth elements has defied analysts' predictions with steep price increases since the beginning of the month. For instance in the last week, the price of dysprosium has risen from around $700 per kilogram up to $1,470. Bloomberg's Jason Scott also reported on June 16th that the price of europium "has risen to as much as $3,400 a kilogram from between $1,260 and $1,300 [per kilogram]." Numerous changes to Chinese mining and trade policies are being attributed to price rise. The changes revolve around the consolidation of rare earth producers in China. Chinese officials have stated their plans to consolidate the industry in an attempt reduce pollution, as well as illegal smuggling of the metals attributed to small artisanal mining firms.

The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age
The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2010-04-14 - For the first time in recent memory, the CEOs of America's top two coal mining companies, and a leading international company, came to Capitol Hill to answer questions on their positions on climate change, clean energy policy, and the challenges that face their industry. "Just as our national energy policy is at a crossroads, so, too, is the coal industry," said Rep. Edward J. Markey, who chairs the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, the committee that hosted the CEOs. "Whether it's climate science, the viability of 'clean coal,' or safety concerns, I believe Congress requires answers from the coal industry on their ability to be a part of our clean energy future." As Congress continues to push for a comprehensive clean energy and climate bill, questions remain regarding the coal industry's position on the essential science of climate change and their potential to provide cleaner, lower-carbon fuel in the decades to come. The House-passed Waxman-Markey bill offered a pathway for coal to transition to carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The coal mining industry has seen significant developments over the last two weeks. A mining accident in West Virginia has renewed questions about the safety of coal extraction, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has offered new rules on the environmental and health impacts of mountaintop mining. TESTIMONY: Gregory Boyce, President and Chief Executive Officer, Peabody Energy Corporation; Steven F. Leer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Arch Coal, Inc.; Preston Chiaro, Chief Executive for Energy and Minerals, Rio Tinto; Michael Carey, President, Ohio Coal Association. Maritime Asia: Securitization of the China Seas
The Institute of East Asian Studies, UC Berkeley, in collaboration with the Department of Politics & International Studies, University of Cambridge, is convening a workshop on “Maritime Asia” with a focus on the “securitization” of the China Seas in the 19th and 20th Centuries. This public forum presents the highlights from the workshop. Anchored in the disciplines of historical and international studies, we view “securitization” as a process of politicization that is geographically defined, historically contingent, resource constrained and trans-temporal in its effects. We also view securitization as the formation of a discourse that is contingent upon complex speech acts in multiple sites. What can we learn from China's modern history about the nation's long-term aspirations as a maritime power? How does Beijing pursue naval preeminence in a post-Cold War political economy of globalizing connections and multilateral agreements? As China aspires to become a major Asian maritime power in the 21st century, we propose to examine the how, why, and the so what, internally and internationally, about its significance.

Secretary Salazar's remarks on June 20, 2011 from the Grand Canyon
PROPOSED MINERAL WITHDRAWAL NEAR GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK What was announced on June 20, 2011? Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced his decision to make an emergency withdrawal for six months of approximately 1 million acres of federal lands near Grand Canyon National Park from hard rock mining claim location and entry under the 1872 Mining Law while the Department continues to evaluate whether to withdraw these lands from new mining claims for 20 years. Valid existing claims are not affected by this announcement. What are the next steps? A Public Land Order making an emergency withdrawal of six months will be published in the Federal Register within the next week. A final EIS is expected to be released to the public in the fall of 2011. Why is this action of an emergency withdrawal necessary? On July 21, 2009, the Department published a notice in the Federal Register of a proposed withdrawal of approximately 1 million acres of federal locatable minerals on both BLM and Forest Service lands in northern Arizona from location and entry under the 1872 Mining Law and that action began a two-year temporary segregation period that expires on July 20, 2011. This action is necessary to prevent the lands from opening to new mining claim location and entry under the 1872 Mining Law when that segregation expires. What is the preferred alternative? The preferred alternative that will be included in the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is the full proposed withdrawal of approximately 1 million acres of BLM and Forest Service lands located near Grand Canyon National Park from mining claim location and entry under the 1872 Mining Law for 20 years, subject to valid exiting rights. The selection of a preferred alternative is required as part of the development of an EIS under the National Environmental Policy Act. The EIS to analyze a proposed withdrawal of these lands of up to 20 years is currently under development and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2011. Has there been public input? Over 295,000 public comments were received during the public comment period on the EIS, which included an initial period of 45 days and was extended 30 days to allow for additional public comment. The interagency team worked with eleven other cooperators and held thirty-one consultation meetings with tribes. Who are the cooperating agencies? U.S. Forest Service; National Park Service; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; U.S. Geological Survey; Arizona Game and Fish Department; Arizona Geological Survey; Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources; Arizona State Land Department; Hualapai Tribe; Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians; Coconino County, Arizona; Mohave County, Arizona; Kane County, Utah; San Juan County, Utah; and Washington County, Utah. What lands are affected by today's announcement? These lands are within portions of the Grand Canyon watershed next to Grand Canyon National Park and contain significant environmental and cultural resources as well as known uranium deposits. The Grand Canyon National Park is an iconic American landscape and World Heritage Site and draws 4.4 million visitors each year, is home to numerous rare, endemic and specially protected plant and animal species and contains vast archeological resources and sites of spiritual and cultural importance to American Indians. The Colorado River and its tributaries that flow through the watersheds of Grand Canyon National Park supply water to agricultural, industrial, and municipal users, including the cities of Tucson, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Diego. What is an emergency withdrawal? During an emergency withdrawal, like a temporary segregation, the location of new hard rock mining claims under the 1872 Mining Law would be prohibited, however ongoing or future mining exploration or extraction operations on valid pre-existing claims could continue. The temporary segregation expires on July 20, 2011. Does this announcement affect oil, gas, coal, or other non-hard rock energy resources in the proposed withdrawal area? No. How many mining claims are there? At the time of the proposed withdrawal and temporary segregation, 10,600 hard rock mining claims existed. Today, approximately 3,500 claims remain. The emergency withdrawal will help maintain the status quo until a final decision is made on the proposed withdrawal. Where can I go to find out more information?
