Escondida is a copper mine in the Atacama Desert in Antofagasta Region, Chile. The Escondida deposit is one of a cluster of porphyry coppers in an elongated area about 18 km north-south and 3 km east-west and is associated with the 600 km long West Fissure (Falla Oeste) system, which is in turn associated with most of the major Chilean porphyry deposits. A barren, leached cap, in places up to 300 metres thick, overlies a thick zone of high grade secondary supergene mineralisation of the main orebody, largely chalcocite and covellite, which in turn overlies the unaltered primary mineralisation of chalcopyrite, bornite and pyrite

Joe Neighbour is focussing on Chilean mining company Antofagasta. Off the back of some positive news, yesterday's session resulted in a sharp move higher. On the technical front Joe sees a double bottom on the chart with a break above key resistance levels. The move higher is supported by a large increase in volume with a break higher on a relative ratio vs. the FTSE All-Share index. Joe expects the momentum to continue in the near term and his aim is to buy into weakness towards GBP 8.00 expecting a move towards GBP 8.80 with a stop at around GBP 7.55

Antofagasta, Chile is a port city, sandwiched in between the South Pacific Ocean and the large hills in northern Chile’s Atacama desert coast. Antofagasta is an arid, dry city with an economy based on the mining industry (copper). It is approximately a 15-hour drive from Santiago and 4-hour drive from the gorgeous San Pedro de Atacama. Antofagasta (besides Santiago and Punta Arenas) is considered one of the most expensive cities to live in Chile due to the copper mining industry; the high cost of living due to the high demand (houses or apartments to rent or to buy along with the cost of food, gas, clothing, etc.). Long known as a production hub in the world's biggest miner of copper, the city of Antofagasta has earned a darker distinction as Chile's cancer capital. Now residents are concerned about the tiny particles of heavy metals that make up a dark powder hanging in the air around them, and the effects they could have down the line.

http://goo.gl/bglbYV Joe Neighbour is looking to sell shares in mining group Antofagasta. After an initial rally in markets following the ECB’s pledge to deliver stimulus to Europe, some mining stocks started to weaken on Thursday afternoon. Antofagasta was among the mining companies to drop and Joe believes it continues to look weak on a relative basis. Joe thinks short covering may have been part of the reason why shares, at first, rallied after the ECB’s announcement, only to weaken later. In the long term he is bullish on equities, but thinks there is room for a pullback in the short term. He is looking to sell Antofagasta. Joe has a stop loss at 770p and his target is 620p, which is the recent low. Join the conversation below to be a part of the social trading experience. Contribute to the Project: http://igeo.tv/contribuye-al-proyecto/ The Bingham Canyon Mine, also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine, is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (0.97 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine. The mine experienced a massive landslide in April of 2013 and a smaller slide in September of 2013. Udachnaya was discovered on June 15, 1955, just two days after the discovery of the diamond pipe Mir by Soviet geologist Vladimir Shchukin and his team. It is more than 600 metres (1,970 ft) deep, making it the third deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine and Chuquicamata). The nearby settlement of Udachny is named for the deposit. As of 2010, Udachnaya pipe is controlled by Russian diamond company Alrosa, which planned to halt open-pit mining in favor of underground mining in 2010. The mine has estimated reserves of 225.8 million carats of diamonds and an annual production capacity of 10.4 million carats Chuquicamata, or "Chuqui" as it is more familiarly known, is by excavated volume the biggest open pit copper mine in the world, located in the north of Chile, just outside of Calama, 215 km northeast of Antofagasta and 1,240 km north of the capital, Santiago. The mine is owned and operated by Codelco, a Chilean state enterprise, since the Chilean nationalization of copper in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its depth of 850 metres (2,790 ft) makes it the second deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, USA). The Diavik Diamond Mine is a diamond mine in the North Slave Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada, about 300 kilometres (190 mi) north of Yellowknife. It has become an important part of the regional economy, employing 700, grossing C$100 million in sales, and producing approximately 7.5 million carats (1,500 kg (3,300 lb)) of diamonds annually. The area was surveyed in 1992 and construction began in 2001, with production commencing in January 2003. It is connected by an ice road and Diavik Airport with a 5,235 ft (1,596 m) gravel runway regularly accommodating Boeing 737 jet aircraft. The Grasberg Mine is the largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine in the world. It is located in the province of Papua in Indonesia near Puncak Jaya, the highest mountain in Papua, and it has 19,500 employees. It is majority owned through a subsidiary by Freeport-McMoRan, which owns 90.64% of PT Freeport Indonesia, the principal operating subsidiary in Indonesia, including 9.36% owned through its wholly owned subsidiary, PT Indocopper Investama. The Government of Indonesia owns the remaining 9.36% of PT Freeport Indonesia. FCX operates under an agreement with the Government of Indonesia, which allows Freeport to conduct exploration, mining and production activities in a 24,700-acre area (Block A). It also conducts exploration activities in an approximate 500,000-acre area (Block B). All of Freeport's proven and probable mineral reserves and current mining operations are located in Block A. The 2006 production was 610,800 tonnes of copper; 58,474,392 grams of gold; and 174,458,971 grams of silver. Investors appear to be bargain hunting and that could chase the price of stock in mining company Antofagsta higher, says Joe Neighbour. He has noted a rise in stocks, which investors have been shunning for the past 12-24 months, saying it looks like a large sector rotation. Neighbour is focusing on mining stocks and has spotted a large and impressive base pattern in the copper charts, which matches with the pattern seen across almost all UK mining stocks, he says. While the fundamentals arguably say stay away from the mining sector, Neighbour says the charts tell a different story. He is looking to buy a pull back to 475p or a break above 520p. His stop on the trade is 440p and his target is a move towards 800p. Mining Capital's Alastair Ford catches up with Proactive to talk Copper. The metal's really burst back into life of late, surging 14% this month to above $5,500 / tonne. Ford puts it down to two things: Donald Trump and the continued activity in the Chinese economy, and he says the effect has been very noticeable: ''We've seen serious moves in all of the major miners - five of the FTSE 100 miners hit 12 month highs in the last week or two.'' ''Specifically Antofagasta has done well. Glencore, which also has serious exposure to copper, has also done well'' In terms of some of the smaller miners that have caught Ford's eye: ''Last week we mentioned Kincora Copper (CVE:KCC) ...they're worth another name check. They've really got some of the most promising ground around in exploration terms.'' ''We've also got Vast Resources (LON:VAST) who've just started producing copper. That's got its own issues at the financial and corporate level but on the other hand, experienced management ... and actual production.'' ''There's also Atalaya Mining (LON:ATYM), the old Rio Tinto mine in Spain ... that's perhaps worth a look.'' ''Asiamet resources (LON:ARS) as well have got some big copper exploration in Indonesia''.

Full Post: http://bit.ly/2gLIUYu Antofagasta, Chile, is a port city in northern Chile and just a two day stop for me as I made my way south to Santiago. Everything I could think about now was getting to Santiago to plan my final and toughest assignment to get to Patagonia and hopefully Ushuaia. I knew once I got to Santiago I would need to get my KTM Super Adventure serviced, new tires and also replace parts in my helmet if possible. After one night in San Pedro de Atacama, I awoke to quite a gorgeous day, perhaps a little chilly, but I would take the sunshine any day. I spent a few hours looking around, and it was a pretty impressive spot. To Antofagasta But it was time to move on. I would travel via Ruta 23, Ruta 25 and Panamericana Norte/Ruta 5 on my way to Antofagasta. I would travel mostly through Calama, the desert city of Sierra Gorda and also the small mining town of Mantos Blancos. But, there was not much to see along the route. From Wikipedia Panamericana Hotel Antofagasta I arrived around 3pm. My room was not ready on arrival. No one came to help me with my bags, yet the porter was keen as mustard to walk my bags to my room and get money for nothing. It took about 45 minutes to check in after arrival. This was because there was one customer being served and only two staff. One of the reception staff was occupied with paperwork right in front of me. Obviously much more important One of the reception staff was occupied with paperwork right in front of me. Obviously much more important than serving a customer. Once I got to my room, I got all my gear ready, all my devices on charge and still had some gear left in the bike. So I would have to go down again shortly. So I showered and changed and soaked my gear in the bath as I had a balcony and the weather was nice and warm - I figured it would dry by morning. Then I went back down to reception. I asked them to look after a bag whilst I went shopping and touring (not wanting to go back up to my room and back down again) I went for a walk to local shops, got some delicious street food, then went for a swim in beach and returned again after about 3 hours. They could not find my bag, actually, they could not find the porter who took my bag. After about another 30 minutes he arrived and said he gave it to the girl at reception. She finally looked up at me and said "Oh, yes here it is", was sitting right next to her the whole time. Pathetic. The room was nice, rest of staff was nice, views were nice, but will never return. WiFi was just average and hotel pretty much empty.
