Asset Allocation -- Or, Where Should I Put My Money?

44:50
In investing we have to consider balance, excellence, profit and more. But finding the right ratios and assets is a constant struggle. It must be something in the air: For whatever reason, a lot of investors right now are looking more closely at their asset allocations, and wondering whether they need to adjust their portfolios. Should a person be heavier in small-cap stocks than large-cap stocks? What should you do when the same stocks you hold individually are also in your mutual funds? Are bond funds riskier than we think? And what should you do when one high-flying company grows to take up half of your portfolio’s value?  In this Motley Fool Answers episode, hosts Alison Southwick and Robert Brokamp pull those questions and others from the mailbag, and dole out their best advice with help from Buck Hartzell, director of Investor Learning and Operations at The Motley Fool.  ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subscribe to The Motley Fool's YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/TheMotleyFool Or, follow our Google+ page: https://plus.google.com/+MotleyFool/posts Inside The Motley Fool: Check out our Culture Blog! http://culture.fool.com Join our Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/themotleyfool Follow The Motley Fool on Twitter: https://twitter.com/themotleyfool

A lot of times, it would take years to master a single strategy in stocks investing. What if you have the chance to look inside the brains of the Oracle of Omaha on how you can grow your money in stocks investing. In this video, Warren Buffett explains the best strategy for beginners in stocks investing. Aside from this, he gives you nuggets of timeless wisdom on how to become wealthy in stocks investing. Warren Edward Buffett (born August 30, 1930) is an American investor, business magnate, and philanthropist. He is considered by some to be one of the most successful investors in the world, and as of February 2017 is the second wealthiest person in the United States with a total net worth of $76.9 billion. Born in Omaha, Buffet developed an interest in investing in his youth, eventually entering the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1947 before transferring and graduating from University of Nebraska–Lincoln. After graduating at 19, Buffet enrolled at Columbia Business School of Columbia University, learning and eventually creating his investment philosophy around a concept pioneered by Benjamin Graham–value investing. He attended New York Institute of Finance to specialize his economics background and soon after began various business partnerships, including one with Graham. After meeting Charlie Munger, Buffet created the Buffett Partnership. His firm would eventually acquire a textile manufacturing firm called Berkshire Hathaway and assume its name to create a diversified holding company. Buffet has been the chairman and largest shareholder of Berkshire Hathaway since 1970, and his business exploits have had him referred to as the "Wizard", "Oracle" or "Sage" of Omaha by global media outlets. He is noted for his adherence to value investing and for his personal frugality despite his immense wealth. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Buffett

Top 3 Investment-Grade Corporate Bond ETFs

06:51
https://goo.gl/QPCkqk - Start earning with binary options like millions of traders do Depending on your stage of life or the asset allocation in your portfolio, bonds may be a solid choice to provide fixed-income stability and a hedge against more risky equity investments. (See also: 6 Asset Allocation Strategies That Work.) Interest rates have been historically low for many years, making the gold standard, U.S. treasuries, less attractive. That's where investment-grade corporate bonds come in. Corporate bonds offer significantly higher yield in many cases, without an equally significant bump in risk. Yes, corporations do go bankrupt on rare occasions, but investment-grade bonds focus on companies with excellent credit ratings and very low risk of default. (See also: How to Invest in Corporate Bonds.) The problem is that picking institutional bonds is a skill best left to experts, and their fees can easily gobble up gains. Fortunately, there are a number of high-quality investment-grade corporate bond exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that are comparatively inexpensive and highly liquid. You also avoid the market-timing mistakes that so commonly befall amateur investors. Most investors should view bonds and bond ETFs as a strategic asset – a buy-and-hold investment that serves a specific purpose in their overall asset allocation. (See also: Evaluating Bond Funds: Keep It Simple.) If you're looking for a few good corporate bond options to round out your portfolio, here are a few ETFs that rise above their peers. All year-to-date (YTD) performance figures are based on the period of Jan. 1, 2017, through July 14, 2017, unless otherwise noted. Funds were selected on the basis of a combination of assets under management (AUM) and overall performance. All figures are as of July 15, 2017. iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD) Issuer: BlackRock Assets Under Management: $36 billion YTD Performance: 4.52% Expense Ratio: 0.15% This is the largest of the corporate bond ETFs and has returned nearly 5.56% since its inception in 2002. The fund tracks the Markit iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index, investing roughly 90% of its assets into securities in the index, with the balance in cash funds. There are currently 1,691 holdings, heavily tilted toward the banking and consumer non-cyclical sectors. Top issuers include JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) and The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (GS). LQD's low expense ratio and solid performance figures make it an attractive choice. One-year, three-year and five-year returns are 0.28%, 3.72% and 3.68%, respectively. (See also: Don't Doubt the Data: Bond ETFs Will Keep Growing.) Vanguard Short-Term Corporate Bond ETF (VCSH) Issuer: Vanguard Assets Under Management: $19.93 billion YTD Performance: 1.90% Expense Ratio: 0.07% Short-term bonds generally mature within one to five years, and yields are lower than those of their longer-term cousins. This fund tracks the Barclays U.S. 1-5 Year Corporate Bond Index and invests about 80% of its assets into securities on the benchmark index.

Foreign Withholding Tax

06:58
Important correction: In the video I say that the ETF XEC holds emerging markets stocks directly. That is false. It holds IEMG, which is a US listed ETF. The only Canadian listed ETF that holds emerging markets stocks directly is ZEM, though it also holds some US listed ETFs. ZEM also tracks an index that omits small cap stocks completely, making it potentially less desirable than the more diversified XEC. Global diversification is universally accepted as beneficial to investors, but foreign withholding tax is a tricky little detail that can eat into your investment returns. When a foreign company pays a dividend to a Canadian investor, the company’s home country will often impose a tax on the dividend. The amount of tax withheld by the foreign government depends on the arrangement between the two countries. ------------------ Foreign Withholding Taxes white paper: https://www.pwlcapital.com/pwl/media/pwl-media/PDF-files/White-Papers/2016-06-17_-Bender-Bortolotti_Foreign_Withholding_Taxes_Hyperlinked.pdf?ext=.pdf ------------------ Visit PWL Capital: https://goo.gl/uPcXg7 Follow PWL Capital on: - Twitter: https://twitter.com/PWLCapital - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PWLCapital - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company-beta/105673/ Follow Ben Felix on - Twitter: https://twitter.com/benjaminwfelix - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/benjaminwfelix/ ------------------ Video channel management, content strategy & production by Truly Inc. - Website: http://trulyinc.com - Twitter: https://twitter.com/trulyinc

How to build an investment portfolio? | Vanguard adviser and client education centre

02:07
When you’re investing it’s important to focus on factors within your control. You can’t control the ups and downs of investment markets. But you can control how you invest your money. You should start by developing an investment plan to give yourself the best chance of success. A financial adviser can help you answer some key questions. • Why are you investing? • How long are you investing for? • Are your circumstances likely to change in the future? • How much investment risk are you prepared to take on? Once you’ve completed your investment plan you need to get your asset allocation right. How you allocate your money to each asset class is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. Then you need to decide how to invest your money. Should you invest within the tax-effective framework of superannuation or outside super with more control and access to your money? Should you invest directly in the markets or access a wider range of investments through a professionally managed fund. If you’re investing in a managed fund you need to decide how you’d like your money to be managed. Vanguard LifeStrategy Growth Fund - VASGX

25:14
For some reason the camera goes in and out. Weird. But stay tuned as I believe the info you'll get from this is pretty important. You probably know by now, I'm a big fan of Vanguard, well, Jack Bogle in particularly. Bogle completely changed the investment industry and for the better. He has saved literally billions of dollars for average investors. I simply can not stress his importance for average investors enough. Bogle should win the Nobel Prize in some category for his work to benefit humanity. The irony is, just like ALL who challenge the status quo, Bogle was seen as a pariah for the longest time. In fact, until about the mid 2000's, professional investors despised Bogle because he called them out. Now, though, very few will challenge his arguments, that low cost beats high costs. The studies are numerous and simply too abundant to cite. Just look up any research on the number one determinant for investment performance. It's always fees. The lower the fee, the better the performance. In this 4-part series I'm going to share with you the Vanguard LifeStrategy funds and what there is to know about them. We start here with the Aggressive Growth Fund - VASGX. We look at performance, the allocation, the expenses, turnover, tax consequences AND we dive into the down years of 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2008. The question that you must answer before you invest is not what did the fund do since inception, 1994. But what it did during those down years and if you could have handled that? Before you invest, you need to answer that question truthfully. ================================= If you like what you see, a thumbs up helps A LOT. Actively Managed Funds In Canada Are Still Terrible

06:42
As at the end of 2017, Canadians still had 88.8% of their mutual fund and ETF assets invested in actively managed products. This would all be fine if actively managed funds were delivering any semblance of decent performance. Unfortunately, the performance of actively managed funds continues to be dismal. Diversity to Mitigate Adversity - Steve Savant’s Money, the Name of the Game – Part 5 of 5

10:14
Sub Headline: Recognize the Threats to Achieving Your Goals Synopsis: The concept of asset allocation, or measuring the risk posed by different types of securities and creating a portfolio of investments with low or negative correlations, is based on the work done by Nobel Prize economist Harry M. Markowitz in the 1950s.Watch part 5 Diversity to Mitigate Adversity from the series Understanding Asset Allocation with syndicated financial columnist and talk show host Steve Savant. Content: In addition to limiting non- systematic risk, one of the goals of creating a diversified portfolio is to provide a more consistent return year in and year out. In the long run, consistency provides a greater profit than you’d achieve fluctuating between some stellar years and some black holes. Diversifying means buying a number of investments within an asset class. No matter how good a blueprint is, it doesn’t guarantee high-quality results. You also need superior construction. In investment terms, this means building your portfolio by selecting a diversified group of securities for each asset class you invest in and ensuring that each security meets your criteria for investing. For example, if US equities are one of your asset classes, you might choosea number of individual stocks. Or you might diversify by choosing a variety of mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs) investing in US equities. Diversification within each asset class is essential because it allows you to offset, or dilute, security-specific risks. You can expect securities that share similar characteristics to react in much the same way to specific factors or situations. For example, one of the major determinants of the value of any long- term corporate bond is its credit rating. With a downgrade, its value drops, and with an upgrade, its value increases. One of the key factors that affects the value of a stock is the quality of the company’s management. Some companies have exceptional management and, as a result, tend to outperform their peers, while other have inferior management and may falter even though they may be producing similar products or providing similar services. The possibility of a downgrade in a long-term corporate bond’s rating that dramatically reduces a bond’s return represents a significant source of risk. Compounding the problem, it’s hard to predict when the credit quality of a particular bond will change. While this risk is significant with any single bond, you can reduce your overall risk by buying an assortment of similar bonds. New Preferred ETF Offers Yield, Safety & Real Estate

03:18
The current low-yield, high-volatility market is making preferred stocks all-the-more attractive, said Ben Fulton, CEO of Elkhorn Investments. Fulton launched the Elkhorn S&P High Quality Preferred ETF last month. The EPRF is based on the S&P U.S. High Quality Preferred Stock Index, which selects fixed-rate investment grade preferred issues (BBB- or higher) from U.S. listed preferred stocks and maintains an allocation of 75% to cumulative preferreds. 'This is a way for people to take risk off in a preferred portfolio,' said Fulton. 'There was no investment grade only preferred exposure in the ETF space so we are delighted to bring this.' In general, preferred stock is a class of equity security that pays a specified dividend that must be paid before any dividends can be paid to common stockholders, and which takes precedence over common stock in the event of the company's liquidation. Although preferred stocks represent a partial ownership interest in a company, preferred stocks generally do not carry voting rights and have economic characteristics similar to fixed-income securities. Preferred stocks generally are issued with a fixed par value and pay dividends based on a percentage of that par value at a fixed or variable rate. Additionally, preferred stocks often have a liquidation value that generally equals the original purchase price of the preferred stock at the date of issuance. 'We have not distributed yet, but we are anticipating a 5.5% to 6% type of yield,' said Fulton. Unlike most preferred stock funds which hold predominantly bank issues, the EPRF has a very large REIT allocation, holding preferreds from the likes of Kimco , Boston Properties and Public Storage . 'REITs have a very good history of paying because they want to come back to the market,' said Fulton. 'They have to pay back the preferred holders both past dividends and future. That's why they tend to have a higher credit rating in the marketplace.'
