It portrays how over the last 150 years mining has made Australia rich, yet created an unending struggle over who shares in the wealth. It reveals how mining helped forge democracy yet has repeatedly plotted to influence politics and even overthrow democratically elected leaders. Whilst mining has also been deeply damaging to Aboriginal society, ironically in the 21st century, it may be aboriginal people's best hope of economic self-determination.

Gold 'mother lode' worth $15 million unearthed in Western Australia

02:14
Underground miners in outback Western Australia have unearthed rare gold specimens which geologists are calling a "once-in-a-lifetime discovery". Workers at the Beta Hunt mine near the small town of Kambalda, 630 kilometres east of Perth, have brought more than $15 million worth of gold specimens to the surface in just four days. The gold-encrusted rocks were found about 500 metres below the surface in an area just three metres wide and three metres high. Biggest Gold Nugget EVER weighing 90kg and worth $3million found in Australia

02:08
A miner has unearthed the biggest gold nugget in history, leading him to secure 40 stone (250kg) of the precious metal in a £10million find. Henry Dole made the huge discovery at the Beta Hunt mine near Kambalda in western Australia. He first found a nugget weighing 14 stone (90kg), 10 of which was estimated to be made of the precious metal. Worth about £2million, it took three men to lift the piece. It beats the country's Welcome Stranger nugget, which was previously though to be the biggest ever discovered with a weight of just under 12.3 stone (78kg). Airleg driller Mr Dole then came across a second nugget that weighed about 9.4 stone (60kg)with an estimated worth of £1.5million before uncovering even more. The miner - who has more than 16 years' experience - said he has seen 'nothing like this' in his entire career. 'As I was drilling it, you could see the gold shavings coming out of all the holes and I thought "there’s something here",' he said. 'And then after we fired it and I came in the next day and washed it all down, it was just everywhere.' He unearthed the 'unbelievable' haul while working about 500 metres underground for RNC Minerals. The firm's chief executive, Mark Selby, said that finding such huge nuggets was a 'once-in-a-lifetime' moment. Mr. Selby says the discovery shows that Beta Hunt could turn out to be 'a very large gold mine'. Senior geologist Zaf Thanos said of the huge find: 'You might go your whole life and you'll never see anything like it.' Armed guards will be deployed to transport the nuggets to a vault and security has increased at the mine. Growing demand for batteries for electric cars and power storage is driving increased investment in lithium mining in Western Australia. WA is currently supplying more than 40 per cent of the world's lithium and a new mine in the Pilbara is the latest in a string of investments in the industry. The West Australian Government is now encouraging industry to build a battery factory in the state to capitalise on the boom. These Are The Gold Companies GSA's John Doody Loves

05:58
John Doody, Founder of the Gold Stock Analyst, has a disciplined approach to picking gold stocks, sticking with a top 10 list. “I love Kirkland Lake. They have two potential 400 thousand ounce a year mines, one in Canada, one in Australia. Very high grades. I think it’s the next Agnico Eagle,” Doody told Kitco News on the sidelines of the Gold Stock Analyst Conference. Doody has also added Leagold Mining recently to his list. On gold prices, Doody said he doesn’t think we’re in a bull market. “$1,400 [an ounce for gold] is a number we’re comfortable with this year. It’s not a bull market for gold because it doesn’t meet the price appreciation.” _______________________________________________________________ Kitco News is the world’s #1 source of metals market information. Boom Town To Ghost Town ( Coolgardie )

04:26
Coolgardie is a small town in Western Australia, 558 kilometres (347 mi) east of the state capital, Perth. It has a population of approximately 1,000 people.[1] Although Coolgardie is now known to most Western Australians as a tourist town and a mining ghost town, it was once the third largest town in Western Australia (after Perth and Fremantle). At this time, mining of alluvial gold was a major industry and supplied the flagging economy with new hope. Many miners suffered under the harsh conditions, but for a few, their finds made the hard work worthwhile. Most men, however, left poorer than they had started off, with their hopes dashed. The town was founded in 1892, when gold was discovered in the area.[4] Australia had seen several major gold rushes over the previous three decades, mostly centred on the east coast, but these had mostly been exhausted by the 1890s. With the discovery of a new goldfield, an entire new gold rush began, with thousands flocking to the area. By 1898, Coolgardie was the third largest town in the colony, with an estimated population of 5,008 (3,151 men and 1,857 women).[5] At its peak, 700 mining companies based in Coolgardie were registered with the London Stock Exchange. The town also supported a wide variety of businesses and services, including the railway connection between Perth and Kalgoorlie,[6] a swimming pool (first public baths in the state), many hotels and several newspapers. The value of Coolgardie to the colony in the late 1890s was so very significant that it was used as leverage to force Western Australia to join the Australian federation - Britain and the eastern colonies threatened to create a new state to be named Auralia around Coolgardie and other regional goldfields, such as Kalgoorlie, if the government in Perth did not agree to hold a referendum on federation. The Western Australian government reluctantly complied and a referendum was held just in time to become a founding state in the new federation. When federation did occur in 1901, Coolgardie was the centre of a federal electorate, the Division of Coolgardie. Soon after in November 1901, Alf Morgans from the state electorate of Coolgardie briefly became Premier of Western Australia. Albert Thomas, also of Coolgardie, was elected the first Member of Dundas, an electoral division south of Coolgardie. However, the gold began to decrease in the early 1900s, and by World War I, the town was in serious decline. The federal electorate was abolished in 1913 due to the diminished population, as many of its residents left for other towns where the gold was still plentiful, and it soon ceased to be a municipality. The situation remained unchanged throughout the century, as its population slipped to around 200 and it became a virtual ghost town. An example of this decline is that, in March 1896, Coolgardie's main street was lit by an electric light, but by April 1924, the same street was lit by four hurricane lamps. Despite this, many of the buildings from the town's peak were retained, which in recent years has helped start a small revival in the town's fortunes. The development of a tourist industry has once again created some employment in the town, resulting in a small increase in population. Coolgardie appears to be no longer in danger of dying. _____________________________________ Music By - Midnight Oil. Nic Earner on the Australian gold bull market, Alkane's M&A deals and the Tomingley Gold Mine

07:24
"At the end of September we had $82.4 million in cash and bullion. We have been accruing that cash up. We looked at the kind of gold investments that are a little smaller than what the majors might want. Think in that 50,000 to 100,000 ounce per annum range that people do not really go for. They tend to be a bit unloved by investors. We look at how can we contribute to those and become a major investor in those and then use our expertise to help develop them and therefore create value for both companies." States Nic Earner, Managing Director of Alkane Resources Ltd. (ASX: ALK | OTCQX: ANLKY), in an interview with InvestorIntel Corp. CEO Tracy Weslosky. Tracy Weslosky: Nic you just put out your most recent quarter announcements and it looks like you are right on track on your gold production. Can you give us a bit of an update please? Nic Earner: We operate the Tomingley Gold Mine in the central west of New South Wales. In the last financial year we did just under 80,000 ounces of production. In the last quarter we did just under 15,000 ounces of production. It is an open cut mine that has been producing well for us. We are actually right now making the transition to go underground on that mine. We are very happy with how it is progressing. Tracy Weslosky: Correct me if I am wrong. I saw a lot of drilling. It looked like a lot of drilling results in that 80-page update you had. Can you talk to us about some of the more outstanding updates? Nic Earner: Compliance does drive a large appendix in all of these announcements. Alkane operated a heap leach gold mine at the town of Peak Hill, which is about 15 kilometers south of Tomingley from the mid-nineties to the mid-2000s. That corridor is quite prospective. We have been drilling about 4 kilometers south of our existing infrastructure, the Tomingley Gold Mine, where we have a mill and processing facility operating at present. Quite interestingly, we have 3 major prospective types. We think each of them is as large as a potential hit area or as our largest pit at Tomingley. We are drilling those right now, between now and Christmas. Those results will come out next year. We got some of the intersections circa, people will see in the announcement, circa 10 meters around that, sort of, 2 gram at different depths. A lot of mineralization and we are trying to define what may be economic and what may not be economic, so quite interesting. Tracy Weslosky: Speaking of quite interesting and economic, I noticed you have been doing a number of M&A activities too, actually in the last month and a half. Can you talk to us about the highlights? Nic Earner: Yeah, we have. At the end of September we had $82.4 million in cash and bullion. We have been accruing that cash up. We looked at the kind of gold investments that are a little smaller than what the majors might want. Think in that 50,000 to 100,000 ounce per annum range that people do not really go for. They tend to be a bit unloved by investors. We look at how can we contribute to those and become a major investor in those and then use our expertise to help develop them and therefore create value for both companies. The first one that we did was a company called Calidus. They are up in the Pilbara region probably known to quite a few listeners for their whole conglomerate gold story, not that they are part of the conglomerate gold story. They have some very, very interesting surface mineralization...to access the complete interview, click here Disclaimer: Alkane Resources Ltd. is an advertorial member of InvestorIntel Corp. #Gold #PreciousMetals

More Videos Click : https://goo.gl/ifnK8V An ordinary event at first glance. Natives had been mining gold for centuries with varying degrees of success, with small mining towns popping up and closing down as and when gold was found and exhausted. The gold sighted at Pilgrims Rest, however, was different. It ran for miles underground and was considered an endless treasure, a discovery which would change the face of Transvaal and jumpstart what was known as the Gold Rush. Within a decade, South Africa’s first incorporated gold mining company was formed. Traansvaal Gold Mining Estate (TGME) came into being in 1895 and to this day continues to hold mining claims to the gold field at Pilgrims Rest. “TGME has been owned by a number of public and private companies,” explains Bill Guy, Chairman of Theta Gold Mines, formerly known as Stonewall Resources. “These included Rand Mines, who acquired TGME in 1968, operating it until 1998 when it was sold to Simmer and Jack, a private company which held TGME until 2010, when it was sold to Stonewall. Stonewall listed in 2012 to focus on the underground mining potential.” Now listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, Theta Gold Mines is progressing the open pit resources of the goldfield which contains 43 historical mines across a prospective area of 62,000 hectares. The development involves refurbishing the processing plant which has not produced commercial volumes since 2015. “While our corporate head office is in Sydney, Australia, in South Africa we have two teams that are active all year round,” continues Guy. “The environmental and legal teams actively manage and progress the permits of the 620-square-kilometre mining tenure, ensuring compliance with South African legislation and mining regulations. “At the mine site itself and the TGME plant, approximately 22 staff and contractors maintain the offices, machinery sheds, work areas and large infrastructure storage facility at Sabie, a few kilometres south of Pilgrims Rest.” Exploration and expansion In bringing TGME back to life, Theta Gold Mines is busy developing a number of exploration and expansion projects. “This year the Company has developed a strong exploration culture,” says Guy. “This has allowed for the expansion of the 2012 JORC gold resource as we are aggressively updating geological data base and drilling holes. “The historical mine plans and drill data have been put into GIS packages and digitised into 3D. The reef is projected to the surface and is targeted for exploration. This large historical gold field has experienced very little modern exploration, but we have made over two million ounces of gold discovery this year.” The most significant project underway is at the Theta Hill mine. The development is immediately adjacent to the Company’s carbon in leach plant at Pilgrims Rest and has been the focus of recent drilling activity. “Theta Hill Mine expects to release its first feasibility study in the first quarter of 2019,” Guy continues. “As the Company begins its steady conversion of this large 5.75-million-ounce gold resource and resource gold ounces are pushed up the value chain from inferred to indicated to probable, confidence will grow.” The feasibility study will prove vital, providing timelines and costing for production at the site. The Company also plans to make Theta Hill something of a flagship regarding its minimal environmental impact. Using a technique called contour haul-back, often used by the coal industry for mining shallow thin seams, Theta Gold Mines will be able to reduce earth works and leave the natural contours of the hill intact. This, creation of local jobs and the restoration of a 130-year legacy will all help build a strong case to support the rehabilitation of mining in the local area. Mining magnates Theta Gold Mines boasts a leadership team with formidable industry experience. Here is some background on Bill Guy and Managing Director Rob Thomson: Bill Guy Bill Guy is a professional mining executive and geologist with over 25 years’ experience in exploration and resource development in Asia, Australia and Europe, most recently as the Managing Director of Longford Resources. In previous executive and geology roles he has been involved in all aspects of the mining industry inclusive of capital raisings, project acquisition, development, and discovery with Jupiter Mines. Rob Thomson Rob Thomson commenced his mining engineering career in underground gold mining in Southern Africa. In multiple roles as executive director, CEO and hands-on site project director and general manager, he has progressed eight exploration projects through late stage exploration, studies, permitting, financing, construction and mining operations. Setting a new standard Indeed, this sustainable approach is a key differentiator for Guy. LIVE UPDATES PLEASE LIKE OUR FB PAGE: https://www.facebook.com/videostrawberry

Mining Jobs TV Episode 3 - Unskillled & Entry Level Mining Jobs

MINING JOBS TV Episode 3: Unskillled & Entry Level Mining Jobs Brought to you by www.miningresumes.com - Kick-start your mining career today and email us at [email protected] or call Mining Resumes on 1300 737 863 Welcome to Episode 3 of Mining Jobs TV. Hi my name is Matt and I will be speaking to you today about unskilled and entry level jobs in the Australian mining industry. Mining Jobs TV is a FREE online TV channel presenting regular episodes where we will discuss mining jobs and tips that will help you to secure a job in the industry. You may have probably heard the stories about a friend of a friend who is earning over $100,000 a year on a mine somewhere in Western Australia or Queensland and wondered how you could get a mining job too. Entry level or unskilled jobs, like trade assistants or plant operators are hard to get now as every man and his dog are applying for them. The best way to get these jobs would be to move out to the little mining towns and live there and register with all the labour hire companies, there are hundreds of them. Trades people like fitters, welders, boilermakers and electricians still have a fairly good chance of picking up work on mining sites. If you don't have a trade, doing a rigging or scaffolding course would give you a good chance at getting a job, the courses are only about 4 weeks long, but they are fairly expensive. Other unskilled or basic jobs available include cleaners, laundry workers and kitchen hands which is not difficult if you have hospitality training and experience. Talking to people who are currently working on mining sites can be a big help, especially if you have no previous experience or qualifications. It would be even better if you could get in contact with expats from your own country who are working on mining sites. They can let you know who to call and what you need to do. If you are inexperienced and unqualified you need to be fit and ready for physical labour. The work will be very repetitive and routine based with long 12 hour days, so you really need to be mentally prepared, as well as physically. Some mines will have a very high turnover of workers. This is because many people go to work on the mines not knowing what to expect. Because there can be such a high turnover, you may not start earning big money straight away, although your wages won't be small either. Once you've proved yourself to be a reliable worker, your wages should increase. Most mining companies will run police checks, as well as drug and alcohol tests. Even though there are wet mess areas on-site where workers can unwind and drink alcohol, they do have to drink in moderation and be fit-for-work before their shift starts Shutdowns are exactly what the name suggests. Every now and then mining sites need to shut down for upgrades, maintenance or repairs and they usually hire people temporarily to work during shut downs. A lot of the work is unskilled and doesn't last very long, so it's great for backpackers who want to keep on travelling and don't want to make a full-time commitment. It's also a great way to get your foot in the door and gain valuable on-site experience. To do certain mining jobs you will need to get licences and training, or 'tickets' as they are more commonly known. There are lots of different types of tickets depending on what type of work you're going to do. Some tickets can be very expensive and mines in different states require different tickets, so you really need to do your research before you start spending money on courses. Don't think that just because you're female that the mining companies and recruiters won't consider you. The mining industry in Australia is becoming increasingly gender neutral. It's not just cooking and cleaning jobs either on offer for women either; more and more women are working on Australian mining sites, and in some cases, companies even prefer women for certain jobs. For example, a popular job for women on mining sites is driving a dump truck because research has shown that women are easier on the multi-million dollar equipment yet still get the job done. It's most important to ensure you have the resume professionally worded and designed to stand out from your competitors. We highly recommended Mining Resumes to prepare your resume as they are the industry leaders in resume preparation for clients seeking jobs in the mining and oil & gas industry. They can be contacted via phone on 1300 RESUME or have a look at their website miningresumes.com with package details and samples browse that demonstrate their quality and experience. 11 Most Massive Mines in the World

10:20
From the worlds largest gold mine found on the top of a mountain to the largest diamond mine in the world here are the most massive mines in the world! Subscribe to American EYE! 5.. Asbestos Mine, Canada Also known as the Jeffrey Mine, it’s located in Asbestos, Quebec and it was in operation until 2012. It’s a whopping 2 kilometers wide and 370 meters deep! Check out this thing on google maps and you can tell how completely massive this thing is! It’s the by far the largest asbestos mine in the world. For a long period of time, people would use this mineral to put into their walls and keep their homes from catching on fire! But recently there’s been a link with asbestos and a disease called mesothelioma, which is a lung condition. This is a toxic substance that people should avoid, so obviously this large mine went out of business. The lake at the bottom might look like an inviting blue, but you can bet your bottom dollar, it’s highly toxic! The small town that grew with the thriving asbestos industry feels like they’ve kind of lost their identity once the mine was forced to close, but people do still live there. 4. Mcarthur River Uranium Mine In case you were wondering which mine produces the most uranium in the world, that would be of course the Mcarthur River uranium mine in Saskatchewan Canada. This huge deposit was found in 1988 and finally a mining operation took place in 1997, when it began producing what’s known as Yellowcake. It’s not the kind of yellow cake you’d eat with your grandparents. This stuff has a horrific odor and basically what it is, is concentrated uranium powder which can then be used for powering nuclear reactors. We imagine this powdery substance is quite difficult to get ahold of. There aren’t a ton of photos of this place but, it does produce about 13 percent of the global uranium production across the globe. 3. Diavik Diamond Mine In case you thought it was Africa who had all the massive diamond mines, think again! The Diavik Diamond mine, found in the the northwest territories of Canada is one of the largest producers of diamonds in the Northern hemisphere and this place is pretty crazy! They annually produce 7 million carats of diamonds each year and you better believe it’s not easy to get here. The Diavik mine is found north of the arctic circle and it’s definitely cold! This photo here shows the subarctic landscapes that surround the diamond mine. You thought getting to work in the morning was tough for you? Imagine trying to get to work here! Just recently in 2015, this diamond produced what was known as the Diavik Foxfire 187.7 which is one of the largest rough gem quality diamonds ever produced. 2. Siberian Diamond Mine Also known as the Mirny Mine, The USSR began searching for ways to make to make themselves a more economical stable and independent union. In 1955 the Soviets discovered large diamond deposits at this site in the far away lands of Siberia and many people got to work very quickly in order to help bring wealth to the union. After about 20 years of operations, they finally decided that At one point this mine produced 10 million carats of diamonds a year and reaches a max depth of 524 meters or around 1700 feet making it the 2nd largest excavated hole in the world. The mine is so deep, airspace is closed over the hole due to helicopter crashes caused from the downward flow of air. The construction of this in the frigid conditions of Siberia must have been grueling and downright cruel. Sources state that the machinery used at this mine had to be covered at night or it would freeze Are the diamonds worth freezing to death?! It’s unoperational today but Some claim that there’s still a bunch of diamonds in this mine and the whole thing could be worth about 12 Billion dollars. It’s possible that controlling this diamond is mine is crucial to controlling the price of diamonds across the world. Bingham Copper Mine The bingham copper mine located near Salt Lake City Utah is home to the biggest pit in the world and it’s been in operation since 1903. It’s about 2.5 miles wide and if it were a stadium, it would be able to fit an estimated 9.5 million people. It keeps getting bigger and bigger too! Diligent workers can move about 250,000 tons of rock each day and it’s even become a tourist attraction in recent years before a massive landslide took place. Some claim that this was the biggest non volcanic landslide to take place in North American modern history. This photo we see here shows you the aftermath of this massive landslide and Bingham Copper mine and it makes you wonder how safe some of the conditions at these mines truly are. The landslides were so massive, that they actually triggered a few small earthquakes! Experts estimated that 165 tons of earth slide down from the top of the mine all the way to the bottom.

Resolute Mining has commenced ore production from Syama Underground Gold Mine

06:55
Resolute Mining Ltd (ASX:RSG) managing director and chief executive John Welborn updates Proactive Investors on the gold producer's achievements in 2018 and goals for 2019; touching on developments at the Syama Gold Mine in Mali, the Bibiani Gold Mine in Ghana, the Ravenswood Gold Mine in Queensland, Australia, and the wider exploration portfolio. Welborn says, "We have an organic pathway to 500,000 ounces of gold production a year from our existing assets of Syama, a recommissioned Bibiani and Ravenswood, so that's a near term development plan for Resolute, to go beyond the 500,000 ounce per annum production mark. Beyond that, we're a company that has proven to be capable of operating multiple assets in Africa, and we're looking to be the right partner for both African governments and potentially exploration companies. We'd like to operate four to six gold mines over the next three to five years, and bring down our average portfolio gold production to below US$750 an ounce."

Resolute Mining resolute in becoming a multi-mine global gold producer

08:12
Resolute Mining Ltd (ASX:RSG) managing director and chief executive John Welborn updates Proactive Investors on the Africa-focused gold mining company’s operations. One of two projects currently operating and producing gold, the Syama Gold Mine in Mali, is progressing towards the goal of becoming a world-class sub-level cave operation. "We're currently operating two processing plants there: an oxide plant which is fed by satellite open pit mines, and the large-scale historic sulphide circuit which [is] processing stockpiles while we build an underground mine. That underground mine is due to start sub-level caving in December of this year," says Welborn. The company’s second gold producing asset, the Ravenswood Gold Mine in Queensland, Australia, has recently gained final approvals for an expansion that should take annual site production beyond 120,000 ounces, over a mine-life of 13 years or more. At the historic Bibiani Gold Mine in Ghana, a second feasibility study is in its final stages, and should be released before the end of this quarter. Resolute Mining will then make a development decision. Exploration around existing assets designed to enhance operations is ongoing. Meanwhile, the company has made a number of strategic investments in junior gold miners and select potential development plays. Welborn explains, "we're establishing a portfolio of gold companies that we think will add a pipeline of growth to Resolute shareholders... it's a really strong end to the financial year for Resolute.”

Top 10 Countries With The LARGEST Gold Reserves!

India According to the World Gold Council, the Bank of India currently holds 557.7 tons of gold. It is one of the largest stores of gold in the world! This makes up 9.9 % of the country’s total foreign reserve. Foreign exchange reserves is money or other assets held by a nation’s central bank so they can back the national currency. India, home to 1.25 billion people, is the number one largest consumer of the precious metal. Furthermore, India is one of the most reliable drivers of global demand. For example, India’s festival and wedding season, which runs from October to December, has historically been a major market for gold. And probably, one of the most interesting facts about India and gold is that India rarely invests much in gold. This is because as a country, India operates under the belief that buying gold leads to a deficit. And their belief must be proving right as things also seem to be improving for India. For instance, if you look at the last few years, India has increased its gold reserves from 557.74 to 557.77. While this might not seem like a lot, India is also at its highest point in history! In addition to what the country holds, Indian households which are considered the world’s largest hoarders of gold, hold a record 23,000-24,000 tons, which is worth about $800 billion. 9.) Netherlands In the past few years, the Netherlands has held 52% of its foreign reserve in gold. The Netherlands has a reported 612.45 tons. In 2016 it was reported that the bank was looking for a place to store all its gold because they were going to renovate the vaults and needed to moving it. The Dutch central bank is planning to move the country’s gold reserves from the center of Amsterdam to a new complex called the Cash Center. Like most countries, Dutch gold is also held in banks around the world to reduce risk. Security measures to guard the gold 24/7 have become a problem in Amsterdam. 189,000 kilos of gold will be moved at the beginning of 2022. Maybe this is one reason that over the last decade and a half, the Netherlands was selling off tons of gold in order to reduce its reserve. However, there weren’t that many buyers out there and they sold less than the country wanted. More recently the country has had less ambition to sell gold. Currently, the country holds the same amount of tons, 612.45 that they have over the last few years. However, the country has increased its percentage of foreign reserves to 61.2 %. 8.) Japan Japan is another country which had been increasing its gold reserves since the 1960’s. Their official gold holdings were reported at 765.2 tons. About 2.4% of Japan’s gold today is in foreign reserve. Historically, Japan has always held a bit more gold than other countries. This was true until 2011, when they began to sell some of their reserve in order to pump money into the economy after the tsunami and the following Fukushima nuclear disaster. But even with selling, Japan’s central bank has been one of the most aggressive practitioners of quantitative easing. For example, in January of 2016, it lowered interest rates below zero, which has helped fuel demand in gold around the world. 7.) Switzerland Prior to 1997, Switzerland was steadily building its gold reserves. In 1997, the decision was made to sell some of those reserves to bolster the Swiss currency and diversify the foreign reserves. The percent of foreign reserves in Switzerland is currently 6.7 %. Switzerland actually has the world’s largest reserves of gold per capita and currently has reported 1,040 tons. Over time, many citizens in the country started to feel like the bank was getting rid of too much gold. They then banded together with the “Save the Swiss” movement. However, once everyone was able to vote in 2014, the vote came to a no, and gold continued to be sold. During World War II, Switzerland became the center of the gold trade in Europe, making transactions with both the Allies and Axis powers. Today, much of its gold trading is done with Hong Kong and China. Around last year, the Swiss National Bank made a $5.9 billion profit, reportedly from its gold holdings. Mark Selby of RNC Minerals shows off a specimen from their Beta Hunt gold mine in Australia

06:16
If there was one booth at Mines and Money London this year that had the crowds lining up for a selfie, it was RNC Minerals. Sitting in a highly polished display case, protected at all times by two security guards, were a selection of fantastic gold specimens from the Father’s Day vein in their now famous Beta Hunt Mine from the Kambalda mining district in Australia. In the video you can get up close to the 93kg rock containing 1400 ounces of gold. That’s CAD 2.5 million worth of gold in just the one sample. Mark Selby, the CEO & President of RNC Minerals was on hand to take us through exactly how the news of the discovery broke. Whilst this story is the stuff of dreams for many of us, Mark explains how RNC was struggling at the time of the discovery and had put the mine up for sale as they hadn’t been able to raise the capital necessary for the drilling planned. Unsurprisingly, the company is now fully cashed up, debt is cleared and they have a full drilling programme underway to fully develop the mine. Mark also takes us through what their plans are for the future of the mine and how they think they can expand on their discovery to date.

Hear of the struggle the Salvadorans are having to prevent the opening of a gold mine now owned by the Australian based company OceanaGold. OceanaGold recently bought a major shareholding from Pacific Rim of Canada. Pacific Rim is currently suing the government of the country for $315m for failing to grant a mining licence under provisions of a free trade agreement. Opponents see cyanide and other mining pollutants as a threat to their livelihood.
