Here we discuss more recent developments and some historical patterns in energy/fuels. History often goes in circles for reasons that baffle historians. Many of the bioenergy technologies being developed today were researched in the 1970’s during the energy crisis. Ironically, many of the technologies researched in the 1970’s were based on ideas that been practiced more than 100 years earlier to produce energy and fuels for a world going crazy for engines and struggling to find a fuel of choice. So, here we are again. The price of oil has been high and for 10 years or so there has been considerable enthusiasm for bioenergy. However, now we are potentially looking at producing more oil than we consume and interest in bioenergy is waning again. The graphs above show what oil prices did in the 1970s and what the balance of oil production/imports has looked like for the last 100 years. Its interesting to note that with the exception of the last 10 years in general the US has always produced more than oil than it has imported. A pioneering technique to convert waste aluminium foil into a key biofuel production ingredient has been developed at Queen's University in Belfast. The breakthrough could also reduce the vast amounts of aluminium foil that goes to landfill every year. Around 20,000 tonnes of aluminium foil packaging is wasted in the UK alone each year - enough to stretch to the moon and back. Most goes to landfill or is incinerated as it is usually contaminated by grease and oils, which can damage recycling equipment. Researcher Ahmed Osman has developed a method to transform dirty household foil, discarded after cooking. His pioneering technique involves a crystallisation method to obtain pure aluminium salt crystals from used foil - the crystals can be used in the production of alumina biofuel catalyst. That type of alumina usually comes from bauxite ore, which is mined in places such as West Africa, the West Indies and Australia, with major environmental consequences. Mr Osman took on the project under the university's Sustainable Energy, Pioneering Research Programme. He believes he has created a solution that is more environmentally-friendly, effective and cheaper than the commercial catalyst. His research has been published in Nature Scientific Reports. "I have always been inspired by chemistry and I believe that catalysis especially can make the world a better place," said Mr Ahmed. "One day I took a walk through our laboratories at Queen's and found lots of aluminium foil waste so I did a little digging and after speaking to my colleagues, I ran my experiment and was astonished by the ultrapure single crystals - I didn't expect it to be 100% pure. "At Queen's, our scientists and engineers often work hand in hand on common challenging problems for the society. "By using our joint expertise, we have been able to tackle the issue of sustainable development and come up with a research solution which lies in an area between chemistry and chemical engineering. "This breakthrough is significant as not only is the alumina more pure than its commercial counterpart, it could also reduce the amount of aluminium foil going to landfill while also sidestepping the environmental damage associated with mining bauxite."

To Burn or Not to Burn: In Sweden, waste incineration plants convert excess and non-recycled rubbish into energy. The Swedish government classifies this process as recycling, but is this form of waste disposal really sustainable? Sweden has 34 waste-to-energy furnaces and the country makes over $100 million a year importing and burning waste from other countries. “We see it as a kind of recycling”, says Jocke Hook, who works at the Västerås plant. Yet much of the waste burnt is plastic and, as Professor Goran Finnveden explains, "if you incinerate plastic you get carbon dioxide emissions”. Indeed Joan-Marc Simon of Zero Waste Europe believes that the number of incinerators will soon fall. The coal mines have been around for decades, but it's a market that's diminishing. Pennsylvania Coal Alliance met with local coal leaders Tuesday to talk about the production's potential and future sustainability. "People don't realize, in Pennsylvania, 80 percent of all coal goes to power generation," Pennsylvania Coal Alliance CEO John Pippy said. Coal is a market that is changing by the minute. Local companies, like PBS Coals, started laying off in 2012 with 255 workers out of a job. One year later, 134 more coal miners were out of work. Pippy said the local economy could take a huge hit if the local mines idle for good. "The businesses and the coal industry pay a lot of money to the infrastructure. They pay a lot to the schools, it's a lot to run this beautiful building and that could go away," Pippy said. Jamie Stilley is Vice President of Amerikohl Aggregates. He, too, said the local economy is strengthened by coal production. "It's jobs, it's wealth creation," Stilley said. Local coal executives and the alliance said Tuesday that coal's biggest opponent is the federal government. "Regulatory rules are being proposed by the EPA that would regulate CO2 to a level that is not achievable with current technology," Pippy said. Stilley said his company has seen it first hand. "Over the past couple years we've seen the federal government, more recently, inspecting us, oversight, to the point that even the state and DEP, which has primacy, to regulate us are frustrated," Pippy said. Pippy said the coal industry has to look towards the future and legislators to sustain. "Denmark, Australia, they tried this model and it didn't work because the numbers don't add up," Pippy said. "If you don't have enough electricity and you have a higher demand, the cost rises. We're trying to find that middle ground and if we get our elected officials, specifically in Washington to sit down at a table and map out a strategy where you take incremental steps, then I think it's a win-win."

He has decided to join Voltaic because he has a technology that is different and Voltaic is a good match as it is early stage willing to look at a non conventional process of retrieving lithium from old abandoned oilfields in the Paradox Basin near Moab, Utah. What is the advantage here with Voltaic? Its brownfield rather than greenfield exploration. They don’t have to spend years and tons of money on drilling proving a resource. Some of these old abandoned wells already have high lithium values. The multimillion dollar question is can Voltaic’s technology process it? If Voltaic can prove the technology at a pilot scale then they could probably sign some offtakes with potential battery companies such as Tesla or Panasonic. The time to market could be great if Voltaic can make some progress on the processing it could open up doors for other brines in the USA. A technological advancement in brine processing could open up lithium mining in the USA. Right now there is only one small producing asset in Clayton Valley Nevada but there could be a lot more if a processing technology could make it somewhat competitive to the higher grade lithium brines in South America where supply is not as secure geopolitically. This technology could have critical importance to the USA as these gigafactories are relying on imported lithium from Argentina, Chile and Bolivia. Voltaic’s Green Energy Project has historical oil wells with high numbers of lithium right near Moab, Utah. To reenter these wells and take a sample is a fraction of the cost than drilling. Remember lithium is more about chemical processing rather than mining. If you look today most companies use the sun in the desert to separate lithium using evaporation. This is the traditional method that has been used for years. However, evaporation takes time and these large producers are mostly sold out for years. Non conventional processes have had challenges being economic removing impurities from the solution. However, the lithium price is soaring and technologies are improving. This technology could potentially open up some domestic brines all over the US especially the geothermal brines. They need to show that the brines can flow and then take samples where they can create a product. A small pilot plant will need to be build to prove that the chemcial processing can be done on a commercial scale. I wouldn’t be surprised with the Project Manager’s expertise and connections if end users are not yet interested to help fund development. As Voltaic progresses I expect their market cap to increase and the stock not staying under a dime at bottom fishing prices. In a recent news release Tom Currin, Voltaic Project Manager stated, “If successful, this process could create value from known resources in the US and globally. The company is incorporating selective techniques, used commercially in mineral extraction and water treatment, in a novel fashion to achieve a result not yet seen in the Lithium process sector.” Mr. Currin has over 35 years of chemical engineering experience in the Lithium and Specialty Chemicals Industry. Tlou’s principle assets are in Botswana, where it has one of the most advanced CBM projects in the country.
