It is not a complete disassembly, just how to access to the glass elements. Unfortunately, the lens doesn't come in good condition: some screws are missing, stiff and/or striped. The Biotar is known for its -unique swirly bokeh -sharpness -symmertical optic scheme

In this first-ever Lens Daddy review, we will be conducting a vintage lens shootout between 2 very popular vintage lenses, The Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 58mm F2 and the Helios 44 58mm F2. Weird Lens Reviews: Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 with samples (Full-frame and APS-C)
I don't normally review legacy lenses and I'm largely going to be sticking to that rule. But I've had a tonne of requests to take a look at this particular Helios lens (and there are many different variations of it out there). This one is particularly interesting as it gives you a bit of a 'swirly-bokeh' effect. I actually held on to this lens as it turned out to be a lot of fun to use...! I hope you all find my new test chart helpful. Support me on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/christopherfrost?ty=h In case anyone is wondering, my Canon 70D had to be sold as I was saving up for my wedding/ honeymoon...which all went great! So I've been using my old Canon 60D quite a lot recently. In the case of this review though, I borrowed my mother-in-law's 70D for some test shots. All pictures and footage shot by me on Canon 6D and 60D cameras. FINALLY!!! I got my HELIOS 44-2 58mm f2 lens.
Yayyy! I finally got my Helios 58mm f2 lens. I had been waiting for it for a while. This is an old Russian manual lens. It is popular for for its swirly bokeh. I've seen amazing photos taken with this lens and i fell in love with it. It is a screw mount (M42) and you need appropriate mount for your camera. I will be testing out on location with natural light and strobe in the subsequent videos. I'm so excited!!!
Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 Lens in m42 Screw Mount For 35mm Film SLR & DSLR Cameras Like Carl Zeiss Biotar
The Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 lens is a well-known m42 screw mount Russian lens that were seen on Zenit cameras back in the day. Of the many m42 mount lenses, this is one of the most popular due to its unique characteristics listed below (http://amzn.to/2oBJpVC - Quick Link to like new / used Helios 44-2 58mm lenses like the one in the video). [Learn more below] [The link above is an “affiliate link.” This means if you click on the link and purchase the item, I will receive an affiliate commission. The Helios 44-2 is a 58mm lens with an f range between f/2 to f/16. The most notable thing about this lens is that it has the same optical formula as the Zeiss Biotar in terms of groups and elements (6 elements, 4 groups), but can be bought for a fraction of the price. It was made in m42, m39, Pentax K bayonet and Zenit Bayonet. The lens filter thread is 49mm and it weighs in at about 230 grams. Minimum focus distance comes in around 19.6 inches. The lens has been said to have been made in both single and multicoated versions. Helios 44-2 58mm f2 lens test footage vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swkSpzC98yg These lenses, as stated above, are Russian lenses that could be found on Zenit cameras. Of course, they can be mounted on any m42 camera and anything that has a m42 adapter built for it (like the Panasonic GF2 that it is being used on now). It has been known to be made by KMZ (most likely the manufacturer of the lens featured here), MMZ, and / or Jupiter in the past. This lens is said to be one of the most mass produced lenses in the world. Photographers love the swirly bokeh. The bokeh balls seem to swirl around the center. People love to shoot foliage with it, but does well for portraiture and street photography. After some research, it seems like the alteration of the permanent f/2 was not unfounded as many prefer to shoot it at f/2 due to the decrease in sharpness when stopped down, depending on the particular copy that has been acquired. Because of the mass production of the lens, some comment about varying quality issues and differences from one copy to another. But, for the price, this is a great lens for its unique characteristics and for those needing something in the focal length. It's definitely well-built with it's metal construction made the old Russian way. This lens was purchased as part of a lens set with other m42 camera lenses as well as some Konica AR Hexanon lenses and adapters. The 58mm lens. The whole set was a nice range from 28mm to 58mm, so a great buy for the price. This lens has been used primarily as a portrait lens to take pics of friends, family and pets as well as plants and flowers due to unique bokeh. The only thing was the aperture ring modification, but it's great at f2, so no complaints. This lens is just as unique for video as well as. If you're looking for a different framing at f/2 than a 50mm, this is a great way to get a distinct look and feel. Back up a tad (from 50mm land) and you'll be pleasantly or wildy surprised with the results of this old legacy camera lens. People that collect lenses, especially in the m42 lens mount, know a thing or two about Russian lenses. Among the notable names is Helios. Due to being mass-produced back in the day, there are many copies floating around. If you're searching for an affordable, vintage 58mm lens, check out this Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 camera lens in m42 mount. Helios 58mm f2 44-2 Lens Daylight & Lowlight Test
Recently I got an old Russian lens, the Helios 58mm 44-2 (my first prime lens!) with a wide aperture of f/2.0 - you can get an incredibly soft Bokeh with this. The lens has got an M42 mount, so I had to use an M42/Canon Adapter to mount it to my Canon EOS 600D. This is a test video in Daylight and Low Light conditions. The Daylight shots have been filmed at ISO 100, the Low Light shots at ISO 400. Most of the footage has been shot with an aperture between f2 and f4. For the Daylight shots I used a Vario ND filter to be able to use the widest aperture. I also used the Technicolor Cinestyle Picture Style in order to have a flat image with a lot of detail and color graded the footage in post with Adobe Premiere (RGB Curves). In conclusion, I can tell that the Helios 44-2 performs very well with my 600D. The film shows the beauty of the last Dwarf Beeches. 'Süntel-Buche' is the german name for 'Dwarf Beech'. It's a kind of European Beech, indigenous to the Süntel massif in Germany, but almost extinct now. Because the trees refuse to grow straight, their wood has no industrial or economic value and so huge forests of them were cleared about 200 years ago. Only about 100 (current estimate, if I remember correctly) genetically pure trees survived the purge until today. All of them are now at the end of their lifespan and start dying. Inspired by the music of Brian Tyler ("Partition", thanks again for letting me use the music), I started 'Süntelbuchen' as my first time lapse project and thought "how hard can it be?". Well, it took five years (2010-2015). First of all I needed cloudless skies or the light patches would flicker, then I needed totally calm air or the leaves and twigs would jitter annoyingly. I also needed to learn how fast and in which direction to move the camera and where the sun moves and when (e.g. if you move the camera faster than the patches of light the effect is gone). Of course I also needed days when there were no people around that could end up in the frame - which wasn't easy because people tend to go outside when it's calm and cloudless. All in all I only got about three or four days of perfect conditions each year because the location is quite exposed and always windy. So I had to be well prepared to make the most of the limited time but despite all preparation I still messed up a lot. This was a more difficult process than I expected. The setup time for an improvised time lapse crane can easily exceed two hours and carting 100kg of equipment (counterweights!) through the forest isn't fun either. I have missed my share of sunrises or sunsets because I wasn't quick enough to set up or move the gear and subsequently program the camera movement. Here is some Behind The Scenes material: https://youtu.be/JPhRmd0y7Fo Unfortunately they started felling many trees, leaving gaping holes in the crowns, and built houses nearby that cast shadows. Almost all of the live action shots are test shots that I wasn't able to redo properly because the prominently featured trees were simply gone or no longer lit interestingly. Fortunately the material I had cut well and came out quite watchable. Now, just imagine square kilometers of these trees. That must have been really impressive... Some technical info for gearheads: I shot entirely with a Canon 5D Mark II - before Magic Lantern Raw was available. All motion control equipment, cranes, dollies and sliders were Kessler gear. During daylight I used ND filters to keep exposure times at about 20 seconds (at ISO 100-400) in order to have motion blur make moving leaves look less aggressive. I took a picture every 25 to 40 seconds. Each shot in the film equals between 1.5 and 3 hours of real time. F-stops for the time lapse shots were between f/11 and f/32, whereas live action was shot wide open. I always shot in aperture priority and during sunrise or sunset I removed/added ND filters and/or changed the ISO manually in the gaps between the camera taking photos. Except for a primary color correction the shots are untreated. No VFX were used, not even deflickering. The swirly bokeh is from a Zeiss Biotar 75mm @ f/1.5. About the name: I know it's actually written 'Süntel-Buche' and not 'Süntelbuche'. But I found the latter to be much more visually pleasing in the context of the film and deliberately took some artistic license.
Lens Test: Helios 44M-M 58mm F2
Circa 1970 this made in the USSR lens came as a kit lens on the Russian Zenit film cameras. It's a 58mm F2 lens & it's based on the Carl Zeiss Biotar design. This is a GREAT lens, very sharp, and you can get some cool sun flares with it that you can't get from modern multi-coated lenses. This is an M42 version which makes it easy to adapt to modern DSLRs, I'm testing it on a Canon T31. It can be had for under $50, everyone should have one!

Hair and Biotar Bokeh 1
Hand-held with a Canon 5D Mk. II and a c. 1948 Zeiss Biotar, wide open. Just wanted to see what a vintage Biotar would look like. Sorry for the jerky hand held nature, and the focus...but you try keeping a fast lens focused on a 2 year old boy...
