VINTAGE LENS SHOOTOUT! CARL ZEISS JENA BIOTAR VS. HELIOS 44

07:30
In this first-ever Lens Daddy review, we will be conducting a vintage lens shootout between 2 very popular vintage lenses, The Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 58mm F2 and the Helios 44 58mm F2. Both of these lenses have great reputations, especially when used on a modern day system like the Sony a7rii used in this video. Who will win? First shots with the Helios 44-2 vintage lens f2 58mm For my birthday a good friend of mine gave me the russian vintage lens Helios 44-2. One week later in Bali, I took this lens out to get some B-Roll. For a first test, I am very happy with the results and especially the close-ups turned out just great! The background blur together with the swirly bokeh creates a unique vintage look. You can provoke some crazy flares whilst shooting against the sun. FINALLY!!! I got my HELIOS 44-2 58mm f2 lens.

02:38
Yayyy! I finally got my Helios 58mm f2 lens. I had been waiting for it for a while. This is an old Russian manual lens. It is popular for for its swirly bokeh. I've seen amazing photos taken with this lens and i fell in love with it. It is a screw mount (M42) and you need appropriate mount for your camera. I will be testing out on location with natural light and strobe in the subsequent videos. I'm so excited!!! Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 Lens in m42 Screw Mount For 35mm Film SLR & DSLR Cameras Like Carl Zeiss Biotar

01:11
The Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 lens is a well-known m42 screw mount Russian lens that were seen on Zenit cameras back in the day. Of the many m42 mount lenses, this is one of the most popular due to its unique characteristics listed below (http://amzn.to/2oBJpVC - Quick Link to like new / used Helios 44-2 58mm lenses like the one in the video). [Learn more below] [The link above is an “affiliate link.” This means if you click on the link and purchase the item, I will receive an affiliate commission. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will add value to, you, the viewer. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.” Also, please know that this is NOT a paid product placement or endorsement; however it has been designated as such in the settings of this video to inform Youtube that an affiliate link is present within the content of this description.] It's popularity has been steady as new photographers buy these old, used camera lenses for use on DSLR cameras as well as old 35mm film cameras that they were originally designed to be used with. The Helios 44-2 is a 58mm lens with an f range between f/2 to f/16. The most notable thing about this lens is that it has the same optical formula as the Zeiss Biotar in terms of groups and elements (6 elements, 4 groups), but can be bought for a fraction of the price. It was made in m42, m39, Pentax K bayonet and Zenit Bayonet. The lens filter thread is 49mm and it weighs in at about 230 grams. Minimum focus distance comes in around 19.6 inches. The lens has been said to have been made in both single and multicoated versions. Helios 44-2 58mm f2 lens test footage vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swkSpzC98yg These lenses, as stated above, are Russian lenses that could be found on Zenit cameras. Of course, they can be mounted on any m42 camera and anything that has a m42 adapter built for it (like the Panasonic GF2 that it is being used on now). It has been known to be made by KMZ (most likely the manufacturer of the lens featured here), MMZ, and / or Jupiter in the past. This lens is said to be one of the most mass produced lenses in the world. Photographers love the swirly bokeh. The bokeh balls seem to swirl around the center. People love to shoot foliage with it, but does well for portraiture and street photography. After some research, it seems like the alteration of the permanent f/2 was not unfounded as many prefer to shoot it at f/2 due to the decrease in sharpness when stopped down, depending on the particular copy that has been acquired. Because of the mass production of the lens, some comment about varying quality issues and differences from one copy to another. But, for the price, this is a great lens for its unique characteristics and for those needing something in the focal length. It's definitely well-built with it's metal construction made the old Russian way. This lens was purchased as part of a lens set with other m42 camera lenses as well as some Konica AR Hexanon lenses and adapters. The 58mm lens. The whole set was a nice range from 28mm to 58mm, so a great buy for the price. This lens has been used primarily as a portrait lens to take pics of friends, family and pets as well as plants and flowers due to unique bokeh. The only thing was the aperture ring modification, but it's great at f2, so no complaints. This lens is just as unique for video as well as. If you're looking for a different framing at f/2 than a 50mm, this is a great way to get a distinct look and feel. Back up a tad (from 50mm land) and you'll be pleasantly or wildy surprised with the results of this old legacy camera lens. People that collect lenses, especially in the m42 lens mount, know a thing or two about Russian lenses. Among the notable names is Helios. Due to being mass-produced back in the day, there are many copies floating around. If you're searching for an affordable, vintage 58mm lens, check out this Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 camera lens in m42 mount. Helios 44-2 58mm f2 Test Footage w/ m42 m43 Lens Adapter on Panasonic GF2 Micro Four Thirds Camera

01:45
The test footage for this Helios 44-2 58mm f2 Russian lens in m42 mount was very surprising and much better than expected. Honestly, didn't know much about this lens when it was acquired. It was part of a set of lens bought on CL for cheap (http://amzn.to/2ov4stB - Quick Link to like new / used Helios 44-2 58mm lenses like the one in the video). [Learn more below] [The link above is an “affiliate link.” This means if you click on the link and purchase the item, I will receive an affiliate commission. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will add value to, you, the viewer. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.” Also, please know that this is NOT a paid product placement or endorsement; however it has been designated as such in the settings of this video to inform Youtube that an affiliate link is present within the content of this description.] This old Russian m42 screw mount lens has been adapted to m43 w/ a Panasonic GF2 (unhacked), filmed at 1080/60i at varying f-stops. Both indoor and outdoor clips have been filmed. Note that crop factor (focal length multiplier) is 2x on micro 4/3 cameras. So, the effective focal length is 116mm. This makes all 58mm lenses on MFT short telephoto lenses. Please forgive the shakiness on the handheld shots as well as other mistakes / inconsistencies; just trying to put up some footage of different legacy lenses. It's in H.264 codec at 20Mbps and with the youtube encoding, some of the indoor / low light footage will be muddy (especially the darker colors). Thanks for understanding. Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 lens demo vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3g3aTeaI3U The thing about this particular lens is that the aperture ring was altered to be stationary and stuck at f/2.0. Not sure about why this was done, but it made shooting outdoors difficult without ND. Only a few shots were produced with this lens at the time because of the smaller filter size, ND wasn't available. But, photos were taken and will be used to make up. But, since it's stuck at f/2, this lens was used for mostly shallow DOF shooting and not wide, landscape type stuff. The 58mm focal length, especially on m43, lends itself to this type of bokeh-ie portrait type framing sizes. Video clips: Macbook Pro keyboard and pancake lens indoors with natural light coming in the windows. Then, a series of pictures are shown in a slide show. There are flowers, street objects and industrial fixtures in a main street restaurant and shop area. Some of the last pictures are examples of the lens at minimum focus distance which really blurs the background out well and isolating the main subject. It is a very unique lens with a unique look and feel. The fact that this is basically a copy of the lens element layout of the Zeiss Biotar 58mm makes this little lens a popular buy for those looking for great quality optics at a fraction of the price. This is a great option for m42 35mm SLR cameras as a standard lens, but for those that are adapting this lens, crop factor must be taken into consideration. Therefore, the lens becomes a short telephoto at about and effective 116mm focal length. This makes it a decent portrait lens as it's somewhere in between 85mm and 135mm. But, as can be seen in the pictures and videos, it makes a great walk-around lens as well. The bokeh is beautiful / interesting in small circular balls and not too distracting at f/2. The lens is sharp and has a nice quality to the pictures it yields. When it comes to m42 lenses, there are so many to choose from. But, there are only so many great old Russian lenses like those by Jupiter, Industar and Mir. Of the old 58mm lenses, this one is held in great regard as it has the same glass configuration as the Zeiss Biotar series. Hair and Biotar Bokeh 3

00:47
Hand-held with a Canon 5D Mk. II and a c. 1948 Zeiss Biotar, wide open. Just wanted to see what a vintage Biotar would look like. Sorry for the jerky hand held nature, and the focus...but you try keeping a fast lens focused on a 2 year old boy...

Helios 44 2 Anamorphic mod 58mm F2.0 test

00:15
Lens is DeCLICKED This is flare anamorphic lens. The lens has effect of an anamorphic lens. Also there is an oval diaphragm with a unique value only 3,5 and standart diaphragm 3.5-16. Inside the lens is painted violet. It gives special effect to the picture. Videos and photos turn out very interesting!!! This lens will give improbable appeal to your image!!! Focusing in full range, including infinity. Glasses have small traces of use. Inside there is no dust. Body has small traces of use. The lens has undergone cleaning and testing by the qualified master. IGA have developed a set of lenses (37mm , 58mm and 85mm) to deliver the the look, feel and characteristics of Panavision C Series anamorphic lenses from the 1970s. Classic movies like Blade Runner, Star Wars, James Bond - The Spy Who Loved Me and Superman were all shot on Panavision C series lenses giving that 'Classic Hollywood' look we all know so well. This set of lenses is now available to buy from IGA . The set of 3 lenses provides all the characteristics of these classic Panavision C series lenses, like: oval bokeh, blue horizontal flares, very narrow depth of field, soft warm skin tones, blooming highlights. The lenses are custom modified and designed by IGA lenses using Russian KMZ spherical lenses which have been modified with new internal coatings to the lens body, new oval fixed apperture and flare creator all inside the lens between the lens elements. These modified lenses are spherical and let you shoot the classic anamorphic look without having to de- squeeze the anamorphic image in post production , simply add 1:2.35 aspect ratio black bars in post production. The lenses come in Canon EF mount and M42 scew mount, ideal for use on 4K cameras by Pansonic, Sony, Canon, Red and Arri , taking off the harsh digital 4k clinical look and giving you the Classic 70s Hollywood Anamorphic look. These lenses have been developed and tested in conjunction with British Cinematographer/Director Andy Lee who is using them to shoot his new feature film. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Cinematic Video Series - Episode 1 Ghostbusters Opening Scene - [1984]" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfQ2UHVCQa4 -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Süntelbuchen

03:37
The film shows the beauty of the last Dwarf Beeches. 'Süntel-Buche' is the german name for 'Dwarf Beech'. It's a kind of European Beech, indigenous to the Süntel massif in Germany, but almost extinct now. Because the trees refuse to grow straight, their wood has no industrial or economic value and so huge forests of them were cleared about 200 years ago. Only about 100 (current estimate, if I remember correctly) genetically pure trees survived the purge until today. All of them are now at the end of their lifespan and start dying. Inspired by the music of Brian Tyler ("Partition", thanks again for letting me use the music), I started 'Süntelbuchen' as my first time lapse project and thought "how hard can it be?". Well, it took five years (2010-2015). First of all I needed cloudless skies or the light patches would flicker, then I needed totally calm air or the leaves and twigs would jitter annoyingly. I also needed to learn how fast and in which direction to move the camera and where the sun moves and when (e.g. if you move the camera faster than the patches of light the effect is gone). Of course I also needed days when there were no people around that could end up in the frame - which wasn't easy because people tend to go outside when it's calm and cloudless. All in all I only got about three or four days of perfect conditions each year because the location is quite exposed and always windy. So I had to be well prepared to make the most of the limited time but despite all preparation I still messed up a lot. This was a more difficult process than I expected. The setup time for an improvised time lapse crane can easily exceed two hours and carting 100kg of equipment (counterweights!) through the forest isn't fun either. I have missed my share of sunrises or sunsets because I wasn't quick enough to set up or move the gear and subsequently program the camera movement. Here is some Behind The Scenes material: https://youtu.be/JPhRmd0y7Fo Unfortunately they started felling many trees, leaving gaping holes in the crowns, and built houses nearby that cast shadows. Almost all of the live action shots are test shots that I wasn't able to redo properly because the prominently featured trees were simply gone or no longer lit interestingly. Fortunately the material I had cut well and came out quite watchable. Now, just imagine square kilometers of these trees. That must have been really impressive... Some technical info for gearheads: I shot entirely with a Canon 5D Mark II - before Magic Lantern Raw was available. All motion control equipment, cranes, dollies and sliders were Kessler gear. During daylight I used ND filters to keep exposure times at about 20 seconds (at ISO 100-400) in order to have motion blur make moving leaves look less aggressive. I took a picture every 25 to 40 seconds. Each shot in the film equals between 1.5 and 3 hours of real time. F-stops for the time lapse shots were between f/11 and f/32, whereas live action was shot wide open. I always shot in aperture priority and during sunrise or sunset I removed/added ND filters and/or changed the ISO manually in the gaps between the camera taking photos. Except for a primary color correction the shots are untreated. No VFX were used, not even deflickering. The swirly bokeh is from a Zeiss Biotar 75mm @ f/1.5. About the name: I know it's actually written 'Süntel-Buche' and not 'Süntelbuche'. But I found the latter to be much more visually pleasing in the context of the film and deliberately took some artistic license.
