Jaguar Land Rover World's Largest Classic Car Center Coventry 1/2

02:17
Jaguar Land Rover is getting serious about its classic cars and SUVs. It launched its Classic division barely more than a year ago, has embarked upon recreating some of its most memorable models, and has now opened a new Classic Works facility at Jaguar's historic home in Coventry, England. Said to be “the world’s largest classic car sales, manufacturing and restoration facility of its kind,” the 150,000-square-foot facility includes a showroom and 54 workshop bays in a setup not unlike a major dealership. But instead of selling and servicing new cars, Classic Works focuses on vintage ones. The restoration of Land Rover Series I, Range Rover Classic, Jaguar E-Type, and Jaguar XKSS models will all take place there, under the same roof as the company's collection of over 500 classic vehicles. The continuation Lightweight E-Types and XKSS will also be maintained there, customers will be able to purchase restored classic Jags and Landies directly from the original manufacturer, and have their own vintage wheels restored by the experts on site. There's even a dedicated service center for XJ220s. "Classic Works is hugely important to Jaguar Land Rover. It’s much more than a building – it’s the heart, and soul, of Jaguar Land Rover Classic for our clients worldwide," said Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations Managing Director John Edwards. "Being able to support owners and enthusiasts of our two great brands with a full suite of services for classic vehicles is a fantastic opportunity." Every vehicle that passes through its gates will be subject to a rigorous 121-point inspection and be signed off on by chief test driver Andy Wallace, who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Jaguar in 1988. All told, 80 employees will be based there – a headcount slated to grow to over 120 by the end of this year. Enthusiasts will be able to borrow classic cars from the facility to experience at nearby locations, and tour both the factory and the Classic Works premises, making the new site another must-see for car fans living in or visiting the British Midlands. http://www.carscoops.com/2017/06/jaguar-land-rover-opens-worlds-largest.html

Abandoned Scratch Awl Silver Mine near Philipsburg, Montana MT

14:03
The abandoned Scratch Awl Silver Mine near Philipsburg, Montana was first developed in the 1870’s. It was misspelled Scratch-All after the original survey but both names refer to this site on Granite Mountain just east of Philipsburg. From the Montana Department of Environmental Quality web site: "The Scratch Awl was one of the first silver lodes discovered in the district, and recorded production in 1875 when it was worked in a small way in association with the Salmon lode. By 1907 the workings were inaccessible. The mine was reopened in 1917, when it supplied a moderate amount of manganese for the war effort. The mine recorded production nearly every year between 1919 and 1927. Between 1928 and 1939 the mine was reported to have produced 50,000 tons of manganese ore and 60,000 tons of silver-zinc ore. By 1939 the mine was the most active in the district. The mine is developed through a 500 foot shaft with three levels with 8,000 feet of workings. On the 500 foot level the mine is connected to the True Fissure lode to the north and to the Cliff lode on the west." The work was brutal but the pay was steady. The mine was operated by the Silver Prince Co. in the 1920’s and by Contact Mining Co. through the 1960’s when it closed. Most of the shop buildings have collapsed due to winter snowfall, but the main cable building and the change house (dry house) building still stands with their roofs intact. After shift showers were a welcomed relief since the underground work was hot, dusty and dirty. This site is on private property so please respect the owners’ rights and take only pictures, leave only footprints. Speaking of footprints, please watch your step! A lot of rusty nails are just waiting for your footprint! Please do not climb the structures since they are well beyond safe condition and could collapse. Also respect the fencing around the main shaft since it was placed there for your safety. Many thanks to my friend Rick from the Granite County Museum and Cultural Center. Rick provided transportation, access and insight to this historical site. Please visit the museum in Philipsburg on your next journey through the valley. Rouse Visiting Artist Lecture: Luisa Lambri, with Mark Lee

01:21:29
Luisa Lambri is an artist currently based in Milan. For nearly two decades, Lambri has examined the relationship between space and the human experience through the medium of photography. Her early work expressed a desire to depict constructed spaces in non-figurative ways and to highlight architectural details that in their form suggest abstraction. As a result, many of her photographs are situated in a place between representation and abstraction and can be understood as a perpetual reconsideration of space and its effects on human life. For many years an investigation into the history of Modernist architecture, especially private residencies, was of particular interest to the Lambri. The photographs from this early period rarely presented a building with the intent of objective representation but rather tried to subvert and deconstruct the authority of many of the 20th century's most iconic buildings through a process of abstraction. In these photographs, Lambri focused on details such as doors, windows or staircases as conduits between the inside and the outside and as possibilities for movement. The concentration on details like ceilings, floors, windows or wall patterns resulted in abstract images that often make it impossible to say where a photograph was taken, which building the artist worked in or what architect designed it. The artist repeatedly stated that these earlier works could be understood as self-portraits devoid of her physical presence exploring female identity within spaces mostly constructed by men. Over the last decade, Lambri’s interest in structures and spaces has broken from the confines of architecture as she started to look at other practitioners in the field of the visual arts who were similarly intrigued by space and abstraction. Her photographs of works by artists connected to Minimalism and the Light and Space movement as well as Latin American abstraction, particularly Neo-Concretism, have occupied her practice and taken the work away from only exploring architecture to a wider consideration of form, space and abstraction. While minimal and reductive in style the photographs are highly personal and interrogate, in equal parts, our physical and psychological existence as humans. For this event, Lambri will present an overview of her work, with particular attention to her investigations of geometric and organic abstraction. Mark Lee, principal of Johnston Marklee & Associates and co-Artistic Director of the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial, will introduce Lambri–a participant in the Biennial–and they will engage in a conversation following Lambri's lecture. Luisa Lambri was born in 1969 in Como, Italy, and currently lives in Milan. Her solo exhibitions include presentations at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore; the Menil Collection, Houston and the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh among many others. In 1999 she was awarded the Golden Lion at the 48th Venice Art Biennial for her presentation in the Italian Pavilion. Mark Lee (MArch '95) is a principal and founding partner of the Los Angeles-based architecture firm Johnston Marklee. Since its establishment in 1998, Johnston Marklee has been recognized nationally and internationally with over 30 major awards. A book on the work of the firm, entitled HOUSE IS A HOUSE IS A HOUSE IS A HOUSE IS A HOUSE, was published by Birkhauser in 2016. This followed a monograph on the firm’s work, published in 2014 by 2G. Mark has taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Princeton University, the University of California, Los Angeles, the Technical University of Berlin, and ETH Zurich. He has held the Cullinan Chair at Rice University and the Frank Gehry International Chair at the University of Toronto. The firm’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Menil Collection, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Architecture Museum of TU Munich. Together with partner Sharon Johnston (MArch '95), Mark Lee is the Artistic Director of the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial.

Barnum FULL Audio Book - Wealth - Money - Investing - Getting Rich - Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 -- April 7, 1891) was an American showman, businessman, and entertainer, remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the circus that became the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. His successes may have made him the first "show business" millionaire. Although Barnum was also an author, publisher, philanthropist, and for some time a politician, he said of himself, "I am a showman by profession...and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me," and his personal aims were "to put money in his own coffers". Barnum "In the United States, where we have more land than people, it is not at all difficult for persons in good health to make money. In this comparatively new field there are so many avenues of success open, so many vocations which are not crowded, that any person of either sex who is willing, at least for the time being, to engage in any respectable occupation that offers, may find lucrative employment. Those who really desire to attain an independence, have only to set their minds upon it, and adopt the proper means, as they do in regard to any other object which they wish to accomplish, and the thing is easily done. But however easy it may be found to make money, I have no doubt many of my hearers will agree it is the most difficult thing in the world to keep it. The road to wealth is, as Dr. Franklin truly says, "as plain as the road to the mill." It consists simply in expending less than we earn; that seems to be a very simple problem. Mr. Micawber, one of those happy creations of the genial Dickens, puts the case in a strong light when he says that to have annual income of twenty pounds per annum, and spend twenty pounds and sixpence, is to be the most miserable of men; whereas, to have an income of only twenty pounds, and spend but nineteen pounds and sixpence is to be the happiest of mortals." .... The Allure of Collecting Arms and Armor

01:03:33
Lecture in conjunction with Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology's "Arts of War: Artistry in Weapons across Cultures" exhibition by Donald J. LaRocca, Curator, Department of Arms and Armor, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. From dynastic armories and curiosity cabinets to Gothic Revival castles, private collections, and modern museums, armor and weapons have been methodically collected, studied, and preserved for their artistic and historical importance, beginning in the sixteenth century and continuing to the present day. This lecture will survey that legacy, particularly as it relates to the genesis of the major collections of arms and armor in leading European and American museums today, concluding with the growth and development of the Department of Arms and Armor in the Metropolitan Museum of Art over the past century.

8-year-old Coeur d'Alene boy digs up a mystery

02:33
As kids we all dream about finding buried treasure, but one 8-year-old Coeur d'Alene boy thinks he may have found a piece of North Idaho history. Last month, Troy Frye and his friend were playing with his grandpa near their home on Cherry Hill in Coeur d'Alene when he found something. At first Troy thought it was a dinosaur egg, but after showing his grandpa, they realized it looked like something else: A cannon ball. Troy and his family brought it to the Museum of North Idaho. Historian Robert Singletary says it's possible that the ball could have come from Fort Sherman, which was built in the 1870s where North Idaho College now stands. Artifacts from the fort have been found on the campus over the years, but nothing as large as a cannonball, and not this far away either. More than likely it appears the ball was used in equipment that crushed rock to help build roads and highways. If you ask Troy, he's pretty sure what he found. But for now, it remains a mystery.

Summary by Wikipedia: Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 -- April 7, 1891) was an American showman, businessman, and entertainer, remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the circus that became the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. His successes may have made him the first "show business" millionaire. Although Barnum was also an author, publisher, philanthropist, and for some time a politician, he said of himself, "I am a showman by profession...and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me," and his personal aims were "to put money in his own coffers". T.C. Boyle: "When the Killing's Done" | Talks at Google

45:52
Warning: This talk contains mature language. When the Killing's Done is my thirteenth novel, published by Viking in February of 2011. The novel takes up some of the environmental themes of earlier novels such as A Friend of the Earth and The Tortilla Curtain, and stories like 'Carnal Knowledge,' 'Top of the Food Chain,' 'Tooth and Claw' and a host of others. It is set in the past decade on the California Channel Islands, where a rather testy turf war was fought between animal rights activists and the biologists of the National Park Service and the Nature Conservancy over the elimination of non-native species of plants and animals, and this provided the inspiration for the book. In fact, I still preserve a yellowing newspaper headline from six or seven years ago (it's pinned beneath a magnet on the refrigerator door), which reads: EAGLES ARRIVE AS PIGS ARE KILLED, a reference to the reintroduction of the bald eagle and the eradication of the feral pig. In my telling, the animal rights activists, led by Dave La Joy, a local businessman, and his folksinger inamorata, Anise Reed, are opposed to the taking of life under any circumstances, while the more practical people of the Park Service, under the direction of the biologist Alma Boyd Takesue, favor elimination of the aliens in the interest of preserving the native species. Thus, for instance, the rats which prey on native ground-nesting birds must go, as must the sheep and feral pigs, which denude the hillsides. What this all amounts to is a series of dramatic confrontations between those who say nay and those who say yea, but, as readers will I hope discover, such distinctions become increasingly more complex and ethically challenging. Just how precious is any given life - and who gets to decide? T.C. Boyle visits Google's San Francisco offices.

Winston Churchill | Wikipedia audio article

This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Winston Churchill Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. You can find other Wikipedia audio articles too at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuKfABj2eGyjH3ntPxp4YeQ You can upload your own Wikipedia articles through: https://github.com/nodef/wikipedia-tts "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." - Socrates SUMMARY ======= Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British politician, army officer, and writer, who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. As Prime Minister, Churchill led Britain to victory in the Second World War. Churchill represented five constituencies during his career as Member of Parliament (MP). Ideologically an economic liberal and British imperialist, he began and ended his parliamentary career as a member of the Conservative Party, which he led from 1940 to 1955, but for twenty years from 1904 he was a prominent member of the Liberal Party. Of mixed English and American parentage, Churchill was born in Oxfordshire to an aristocratic family. Joining the British Army, he saw action in British India, the Anglo–Sudan War, and the Second Boer War, gaining fame as a war correspondent and writing books about his campaigns. Elected an MP in 1900, initially as a Conservative, he defected to the Liberals in 1904. In H. H. Asquith's Liberal government, Churchill served as President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty, championing prison reform and workers' social security. During the First World War, he oversaw the Gallipoli Campaign; after it proved a disaster, he resigned from government and served in the Royal Scots Fusiliers on the Western Front. In 1917 he returned to government under David Lloyd George as Minister of Munitions, and was subsequently Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, then Secretary of State for the Colonies. After two years out of Parliament, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Stanley Baldwin's Conservative government, returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure on the UK economy. Out of office during the 1930s, Churchill took the lead in calling for British rearmament to counter the growing threat from Nazi Germany. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was re-appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Following Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's resignation in 1940, Churchill replaced him. Churchill oversaw British involvement in the Allied war effort, resulting in victory in 1945. His wartime leadership has been widely praised; however, several of his decisions have proved controversial. After the Conservatives' defeat in the 1945 general election, he became Leader of the Opposition. Amid the developing Cold War with the Soviet Union, he publicly warned of an "iron curtain" of Soviet influence in Europe and promoted European unity. He was elected prime minister in the 1951 election. His second term was preoccupied with foreign affairs, including the Malayan Emergency, Mau Mau Uprising, Korean War and a UK-backed Iranian coup. Domestically his government emphasised house-building and developed an atomic bomb. In declining health, Churchill resigned as prime minister in 1955, although he remained an MP until 1964. Upon his death in 1965, he was given a state funeral. Widely considered one of the 20th century's most significant figures, Churchill remains popular in the UK and Western world, where he is seen as a victorious wartime leader who played an important role in defending liberal democracy from the spread of fascism. Also praised as a social reformer and writer, among his many awards was the Nobel Prize in Literature. In more recent years however, his imperialist views and comments on race, as well as his sanctioning of human rights abuses in the suppression of anti-imperialist movements seeking independence from the British Empire, have generated considerable controversy.
