#ghosttowns #goldrush #gold The wildest and fastest American era that ever was... Men left their homes, wives, children, and their jobs, and raced West in a mad rush to find a pot-of-gold at the end of the rainbow. Towns sprang up overnight, along with banks, general stores, boarding houses, saloons, all of which were filled with prospectors, hustlers, gamblers, and outlaws. Some came to mine gold. Others came to mine the miners. Men and women lived fast, full, often reckless lives, and when rumors of new strikes arose, many picked up their stakes and moved on with the possibility of a better tomorrow someplace else. Left behind in their wake were empty buildings and silent streets. This documentary brings to life eleven ghost towns. Some are completely deserted, while others are actually still alive, though, they are operating as unique places that people can visit and witness what a ghost town was like back in the 19th century. It is all here; a collection of anecdotes and history of America's past, gone but never forgotten. A few towns even allow visitors to pan for gold! Included Are: Coloma, CA Grass Valley, CA Murphys, CA Virginia City, NV Sutro, NV Bodie, CA Buckskin Joe, CO Lake City, CO Bannack, MT Vulture City, AZ Mogollon, NM

The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) began on January 24, 1848, when gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0671255371/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0671255371&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=e466e8af410d510aab178d97d3765afc The first to hear confirmed information about gold in California were residents of Oregon, the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), western Mexico, and Central America. They were the first to go there in late 1848. All told, the news of gold brought some 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad. Of the 300,000, approximately half arrived by sea and half came overland from the east, on the California Trail and the Gila River trail. The gold-seekers, called "forty-niners" (as a reference to 1849), often faced substantial hardships on the trip. While most of the newly arrived were Americans, the Gold Rush attracted tens of thousands from Latin America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. At first, the gold nuggets could be picked up off the ground. Later, gold was recovered from streams and riverbeds using simple techniques, such as panning. More sophisticated methods were developed and later adopted elsewhere. At its peak, technological advances reached a point where significant financing was required, increasing the proportion of gold companies to individual miners. Gold worth tens of billions of today's dollars was recovered, which led to great wealth for a few. However, many returned home with little more than what they had started with. The effects of the Gold Rush were substantial. San Francisco grew from a small settlement of about 200 residents in 1846 to a boomtown of about 36,000 by 1852. Roads and other towns were built throughout California. In 1849 a state constitution was written, and a governor and legislature were chosen. California became a state as part of the Compromise of 1850. New methods of transportation developed as steamships came into regular service. By 1869 railroads were built across the country from California to the eastern United States. Agriculture and ranching expanded throughout the state to meet the needs of the settlers. At the beginning of the Gold Rush, there was no law regarding property rights in the goldfields and a system of "staking claims" was developed. The Gold Rush also resulted in attacks on Native Americans, who were forcibly removed from their lands. An estimated 100,000 California Indians died between 1848 and 1868, and some 4,500 of them were murdered. Gold mining also caused environmental harm to rivers and lakes. Overnight California gained the international reputation as the "golden state". Generations of immigrants have been attracted by the California Dream. California farmers, oil drillers, movie makers, airplane builders, and "dot-com" entrepreneurs have each had their boom times in the decades after the Gold Rush. The literary history of the Gold Rush is reflected in the works of Mark Twain (The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County), Bret Harte (A Millionaire of Rough-and-Ready), Joaquin Miller (Life Amongst the Modocs), and many others. Included among the modern legacies of the California Gold Rush are the California state motto, "Eureka" ("I have found it"), Gold Rush images on the California State Seal, and the state nickname, "The Golden State", as well as place names, such as Placer County, Rough and Ready, Placerville (formerly named "Dry Diggings" and then "Hangtown" during rush time), Whiskeytown, Drytown, Angels Camp, Happy Camp, and Sawyers Bar. The San Francisco 49ers National Football League team, and the similarly named athletic teams of California State University, Long Beach, are named for the prospectors of the California Gold Rush. In addition. the standard route shield of state highways in California is in the shape of a miner's spade to honor the California Gold Rush. Today, aptly named State Route 49 travels through the Sierra Nevada foothills, connecting many Gold Rush-era towns such as Placerville, Auburn, Grass Valley, Nevada City, Coloma, Jackson, and Sonora. This state highway also passes very near Columbia State Historic Park, a protected area encompassing the historic business district of the town of Columbia; the park has preserved many Gold Rush-era buildings, which are presently occupied by tourist-oriented businesses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_gold_rush

The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Take a short trip with me to Dawson City, Canada. Have a look at how the "average, not for TV" miner gets gold. No staged arguments, breakdowns, or deadlines. No scripted drama, or ridiculous million ounce goals. Just average miners trying to make a few bucks and have a little fun doing it. The mining season lasts from May to the first of October, or as soon as the water freezes. Thanks for watching. This is a copy of a previously uploaded video. I was forced to re upload this video due to technical reasons, sorry for any inconvenience.

Gold is quickly becoming the new cocaine in Colombia. The precious metal is now the currency of choice for individuals and groups engaging in illicit trade in the South American country. That's because unlike cocaine, it's perfectly legal to carry gold, and unlike money, it's virtually untraceable. But there are some major side-effects of Colombia's new gold rush that locals are curiously quiet about: erectile dysfunction and brain damage. VICE News correspondent Monica Villamizar travelled to the Antioquia, Colombia, a hotbed of illegal gold mining, to investigate an unprecedented surge in impotence and neurological problems that experts are attributing to mercury, an essential gold-digging element. The Shirley Letters from California Mines in 1851-52 Louise Amelia Knapp Smith CLAPPE (1819 - 1906) Louise Amelia Knapp Smith Clappe moved to California from Massachusetts during the Gold Rush of the mid-1800’s. During her travels, Louise was offered the opportunity to write for The Herald about her travel adventures. It was at this point that Louise chose the name “Shirley” as her pen name. Dame Shirley wrote a series of 23 letters to her sister Mary Jane (also known as Molly) in Massachusetts in 1851 and 1852. The “Shirley Letters”, as the collected whole later became known, gave true accounts of life in two gold mining camps on the Feather River in the 1850s. She described these camps in Northern California with vividness in portraying the wildness of Gold Rush life. The letters give detailed accounts of the vast and beautiful landscape that was the background to the hustle and bustle of mining life. Louise’s perspective as a woman provided a contrast to the typically all-male mining camps that she occupied. The letters were later published in the Pioneer, a California literary magazine based out of San Francisco. It just so happens that in our past and even in our present with cryptocurrency like bitcoin people still go bonkers over the idea of striking it rich easily so join us as we check out some historic gold rushes that ended up changing people's lives for better or worse: The California Gold Rush In 1848, it would be a carpenter from New Jersey that accidentally created one of the greatest gold rushes in American history. His name was James Wilson Marshall and he found flakes of gold in the American River at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Coloma, California. Witswatersrand Gold Rush One of the most popular locations to source gold still today was discovered long before 1886 by Africans and Natives who were already mining for the precious mineral, but it was Witswaterrand that would play a key part in the Mineral Revolution and it also led to the establishment of Johannesburg, South Africa. The Black Hills Gold Rush The land was technically owned by the Sioux at the time in 1874 but the first arrivals of men seeking gold were led by George Armstrong Custer. He brought along with him 1000 men to investigate the rumors that there was gold in present-day Custer, South Dakota. Georgia Gold Rush of 1829 The George Gold Rush of 1829 at the time was known as Cherokee Nation, but it began to be flooded by thousands of prospectors hoping to find gold in the area. There were around four thousand miners working along the Yahoola Creek alone and the numbers only grew over time. Pike's Peak or Bust! The Pike's Peak or Bust! Slogan could be seen on carriages coming into town and it actually became the slogan in reference to the early prospectors who came to the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains in search of gold. Bitcoin Boom We have come quite a long way from the time when prospectors and miners had to get lucky and search in rocky regions in order to strike it rich, but now with the Bitcoin Boom things aren't so far from our past.

The Carmelita Mines and Mill consist of two (2) large camps in the remote low hills of Arizona. The Carmelita claims encompass a large number of older mines including the Alaskan and others. The mine named Carmelita after the wife of mine owner, John G. Campbell. Later they divorced and Carmelita received the mine in the settlement. She ran the mine her entire life.
