GOLD RUSH - GOLD TOWNS (Old Wild West History Documentary) INCREDIBLE HISTORY DOCUMENTARY - In the early 19th century, California was a dusty outpost few Americans had visited. Poisoned By The Gold Rush
Gold is quickly becoming the new cocaine in Colombia. The precious metal is now the currency of choice for individuals and groups engaging in illicit trade in the South American country. That's because unlike cocaine, it's perfectly legal to carry gold, and unlike money, it's virtually untraceable. But there are some major side-effects of Colombia's new gold rush that locals are curiously quiet about: erectile dysfunction and brain damage. VICE News correspondent Monica Villamizar travelled to the Antioquia, Colombia, a hotbed of illegal gold mining, to investigate an unprecedented surge in impotence and neurological problems that experts are attributing to mercury, an essential gold-digging element. THE REAL HISTORY OF THE GOLD RUSH (OLD WILD WEST DOCUMENTARY) At the end of 1853, San Francisco was a city on the fast track. A few years earlier, the seaside town had been a sleepy village of just 800 people. But the sight of gold in the waters of the American River set the stage for an event that would forever change a city, a fledgling state, and the nation. Incorporating rare and exquisite daguerreotypes and original recreations, this film offers a vivid portrait of a seminal event in America's history.

Kenya: Gold miners risk their lives by using mercury
Millions of people are risking their lives using mercury to separate gold from ore in the gold mining industry. United Nations launched a campaign to stop the use of mercury in unofficial gold mining, but alternative machines are still too expensive for miners to obtain. This is one of the issues to be discussed at the UN Environment Assembly being held in Kenya. 6 Historic Mad Gold Rushes
Stumbling upon gold can chance people’s life, like the California historic gold rush or even the Bitcoin boom. Here are some of the most historic gold rushes ever. Subscribe to World5List http://goo.gl/cpJSA6 Find us on... -- http://www.boredbadger.com -- http://www.facebook.com/world5list Historic Gold Rushes Some people dream of winning it big in the lottery but what if you accidentally stumbled upon a large amount of wealth? It just so happens that in our past and even in our present with cryptocurrency like bitcoin people still go bonkers over the idea of striking it rich easily so join us as we check out some historic gold rushes that ended up changing people's lives for better or worse: The California Gold Rush In 1848, it would be a carpenter from New Jersey that accidentally created one of the greatest gold rushes in American history. His name was James Wilson Marshall and he found flakes of gold in the American River at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Coloma, California. Witswatersrand Gold Rush One of the most popular locations to source gold still today was discovered long before 1886 by Africans and Natives who were already mining for the precious mineral, but it was Witswaterrand that would play a key part in the Mineral Revolution and it also led to the establishment of Johannesburg, South Africa. The Black Hills Gold Rush The land was technically owned by the Sioux at the time in 1874 but the first arrivals of men seeking gold were led by George Armstrong Custer. He brought along with him 1000 men to investigate the rumors that there was gold in present-day Custer, South Dakota. Georgia Gold Rush of 1829 The George Gold Rush of 1829 at the time was known as Cherokee Nation, but it began to be flooded by thousands of prospectors hoping to find gold in the area. There were around four thousand miners working along the Yahoola Creek alone and the numbers only grew over time. Pike's Peak or Bust! The Pike's Peak or Bust! Slogan could be seen on carriages coming into town and it actually became the slogan in reference to the early prospectors who came to the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains in search of gold. Bitcoin Boom We have come quite a long way from the time when prospectors and miners had to get lucky and search in rocky regions in order to strike it rich, but now with the Bitcoin Boom things aren't so far from our past.

California drought spurs mini gold rush in Sierra Nevada foothills
Tim Amavisca and his teenage daughter Hailey are spending some time in the Californian wilderness panning for gold. "The game plan was, move a couple boulders, try to get to bedrock, spend time with the daughter and hopefully find some gold." he explains. "With the drought going on, we're able to dig in more locations that wouldn't be accessible at later times" he says. Leaning over a bed of rocks in waterproof overalls, Amavisca reaches into the river and scoops shovelfuls of dirt into a plastic bucket. He and his daughter then pour the dirt into a sluice box that's used to trap gold flakes on textured rubber mats. Another amateur prospector Rudy Price sources the dry rocks of the Bear River with a shovel and pan, surveying the riverbed for good spots for prospecting. "I do understand that it's a dramatic impact on everybody during a drought that's this severe, but at the same token I'm taking advantage of it," says Price. The drought is bringing in many first-time prospectors to Pioneer Mining Supplies in the Gold Rush-era town of Auburn. The store sells shovels, buckets, pans, rubber boots, maps and mining books, as well as more advanced prospecting equipment such as sluice boxes and gold concentrators. Frank Sullivan, who opened the mining store nearly 40 years ago, says business has increased by 20 to 25 percent because of the drought. "Oh yeah, it's been good for business. I do live in the mountains so I don't like to see the drought. But the rivers being low makes for business being good. A lot of people's having fun. I've seen a lot of new gold coming through the door." Sullivan is concerned about the lack of rain because he lives in the mountains and worries about forest fires. With good jobs in short supply and gold selling for more than $1,300 an ounce, many local residents are prospecting to supplement their incomes Sullivan sold four-foot metal sluice box to amateur prospector Trevor Whitehead and his friend. "It's more of a hobby, but obviously if we hit a nice pocket, then yeah, I would love to make some money," says Whitehead. He says water levels at the North Fork of the American River are about two feet below normal, which has opened up new areas for gold panning. One of the worst droughts in California history has prompted the state and federal governments to severely cut water supplies to farms and cities. It's also left rivers and streams with dangerously low water levels, putting fish and wildlife at risk, as Jeff Kitchen, a hydrologist with the USGS California Water Science Center explains. "The stream flow in many of our rivers is probably about 10 percent or less of what we would normally expect this time of year. So there's a very significant, noticeable drop in what we would normally see." But for now gold diggers are making the most of the unusually warm, dry winter. Amavisca, who recently left the military, has been prospecting several times a week this winter, a season when it's usually raining and river levels are too high for gold panning. "If you see a good-sized flake, that's when you get excited," says Amavisca, who lives in Sacramento, as he looked for gold in one of the sluice box trays. The father daughter team then proudly showed of vial containing flakes of gold, a good day's work prospecting. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone. Secret Miner’s Cabin & Mines In The Sierra Nevada - Part 2
With this second video, we climb up the side of the canyon above the historic miner’s cabin. These are just some of the gold mines on this claim… The early miners were very busy in this canyon and evidence of their work is all over the place. Some of this evidence is just unusual divots in the earth or stacks of rocks and other times one can find old bottles or bits of metal. However, we also found the remains of a tram system and there are other mining equipment treasures scattered around that the claim owner has discovered over the years. And then, of course, there are the mines themselves. I wonder how many are covering these canyon walls that have eroded shut and have been lost to history? Given how steep this canyon is, the tram system was not a surprise, but it is still an impressive level of sophistication for a mining area that is completely off the radar now. Waste rock would have just been dumped in front of the adit, but presumably the gold ore was trammed down to that stamp mill we saw in the first video for processing. We had to drop down into the first adit that you’ll see in this video, but that is not the way the miner’s accessed this claim. Where we were standing looking back at the large mound of dirt obstructing the portal was the original floor level of this mine, but the portal has almost completely filled in with dirt since the miners were last busy here. We are fortunate that it is open at all. Completely obscured by that mound of dirt is another drift that took off to the right (from the perspective of facing the portal). We suspected something was back there based on the shape of the adit and so, as I was crawling out of the mine, I squeezed over to that side and there was a small gap where I could see into the short drift there. It didn’t run back that far and, in fact, I could see the end of it from where I was sprawled out on the mound of dirt. There weren’t any mining artifacts or anything like that inside. The rumored ore cart in that lower drift level was quite interesting to me though! Unfortunately, that was a particularly sketchy section of the mine. Those huge slabs around the side of that winze were very precariously balanced there and, as you saw, that winze goes vertical before reaching the next level. I would love to go back with proper gear to be able to get down to that level, but it would be sporty. The last adit – again, completely different from the others – had the most amount of visible quartz, but it presumably was not particularly rich or it would have been a lot bigger. That adit seemed more exploratory in nature given how the miners were meandering off in different directions inside. They obviously did not run out of quartz. So, the gold content must have been too low to justify pursuing it. There were some nice crystals in there though! Thank you again to the claim owner and his dog, Shade, for sharing this site with us. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference. You can see the gear that I use for mine exploring here: https://bit.ly/2wqcBDD You can click here for my full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. The Shirley Letters from California Mines in 1851 52 Full Audiobook by Louise Amelia Knapp
SUBSCRIBE HERE https://goo.gl/uOq9vg TO OUR CHANNEL. FRESH CONTENT UPLOADED DAILY. The Shirley Letters from California Mines in 1851-52 Louise Amelia Knapp Smith CLAPPE (1819 - 1906) Louise Amelia Knapp Smith Clappe moved to California from Massachusetts during the Gold Rush of the mid-1800’s. During her travels, Louise was offered the opportunity to write for The Herald about her travel adventures. It was at this point that Louise chose the name “Shirley” as her pen name. Dame Shirley wrote a series of 23 letters to her sister Mary Jane (also known as Molly) in Massachusetts in 1851 and 1852. The “Shirley Letters”, as the collected whole later became known, gave true accounts of life in two gold mining camps on the Feather River in the 1850s. She described these camps in Northern California with vividness in portraying the wildness of Gold Rush life. The letters give detailed accounts of the vast and beautiful landscape that was the background to the hustle and bustle of mining life. Louise’s perspective as a woman provided a contrast to the typically all-male mining camps that she occupied. The letters were later published in the Pioneer, a California literary magazine based out of San Francisco. Gold rush in California - vpro Metropolis
Dan Durack has got the gold fever. Eighteen years ago he got extremely fascinated by the precious metal. Ever since, the gold rush rules his life. Dan bought a camper and now every day he wanders among the rocks of the river together with his dogs, looking for tiny grains of gold. vpro Metropolis was a video project by Dutch broadcast organisation vpro, that ran from 2008 to 2015. Metropolis is made by a global collective of young filmmakers and TV producers, reporting on remarkable stories from their own country/city. We made a trip around the globe on one single issue: from local beauty ideals to Elvis impersonators, to what's it like being gay, or an outcast or a dog in different cultures.
