Ricky Lee Skaggs was born in Cordell, Kentucky. He started playing music at age 5 after he was given a mandolin by his father, Hobert. At age 6, he played mandolin and sang on stage with Bill Monroe. At age 7, he appeared on television's Martha White country music variety show, playing with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. He also wanted to audition for the Grand Ole Opry at that time, but was told he was too young. In his mid-teens, Skaggs met a fellow teen guitarist, Keith Whitley, and the two started playing together with Whitley's banjoist brother Dwight on radio shows. By 1970, they had earned a spot opening for Ralph Stanley and Skaggs and Keith Whitley were thereafter invited to join Stanley's band, the Clinch Mountain Boys Skaggs later joined The Country Gentlemen in Washington, DC, J. D. Crowe's New South. For a few years, Skaggs was a member of Emmylou Harris's Hot Band. He wrote the arrangements for Harris's 1980 bluegrass-roots album, Roses in the Snow. In addition to arranging for Harris, Skaggs sang harmony and played mandolin and fiddle in the Hot Band.

Today I am returning to The ToneWay Mountain Music Collection for another song from the repertoire of The Carter Family. It is a traditional song they collected from the singing of a number of miners. According to another site on the internet which lists and shows the lyrics of Carter Family songs: "Coal Miner's Blues" is on the surface only a cheerful and catchy rhythmic piece, but it is as well an accurate social reminder of primitive bituminous-mining days in the South. I'm not much of a blues guitarist, but here goes anyway.

A request from another friend, Don Palladino came to me yesterday. As he pointed out, there is only one version of this song on youtube to date, and that is an excellent one. Finding the lyrics was even more difficult, but thanks to someone called Rich-Joy, I got them and the following information about the song. The author, Ted Edwards, who was brought up in the coal mining community of Wigan, used to lie in bed as a small child and listen to all these early morning sounds around him, as the local community of miners prepared for and set off for work in the mine. He would then imagine the miners in their clogs as a cavalry charge, off to remove the Indians who'd taken over the mine during the night!!! An interesting social note: they did not have alarm clocks in those days, so the mine employed a man to go round shortly before the shift was due to start to knock on bedroom windows using a long pole to wake up any miners who might have overslept. His were the first clogs to be heard in the morning, shortly to be followed by an increasing number as the miners left home for the mine.

Made by:Movideo for coal song https://www.topwin-movie-maker.com A song which came out of me in flood of words and chords, had it written and recorded between 3am - 6am. My voice is rough, but fits the lyrics I think. Instrumentation consists of 3 acoustic guitars, bass,drums clavinet, and vocal. All performed by me alone. I'd had the name "Sunset Haybalers" in my head for years, and finally got the Americana song to initiate it. It's a little history lesson for the old-time coal miner's of eastern Kentucky. send me a message [email protected] sunset haybailers featuring C. Brian Jasper

★ Ricky Skaggs ❀ Coal Mining Man ► Lyrics ⇓I Daylight of dark In rain or shine It don't much matter Down in the mine Where the tunnel's deep Lord, the air gets thin That's the way of life For the minin' man His lungs are weak His back is gone His sixty years Are plainly shown Lived half his life Down in the ground A cold steel hammer Rings a mournful sound Daylight of dark In rain or shine It don't much matter Down in the mine Where the tunnel's deep Lord, the air gets thin That's the way of life For the minin' man I'll tell you, Son He said to me There's just two things I pray to see That the day my Savior Calls me home And to see my son Stop minin' coal Oh daddy dear I'll tell you true There's nothing else For me to do But to make my livin' Underneath this land And live and die A coal minin' man Daylight of dark In rain or shine It don't much matter Down in the mine Where the tunnel's deep Lord, the air gets thin That's the way of life For the minin' man I'll make my livin' Underneath this land And die like you A coal minin' man ★I do not claim to be the owner of the music or the video, all of which is copyrighted to its respective owners. This song is a tribute to Charles Scott Howard, from Southeastern Kentucky, a tireless fighter for miners' rights, especially with regard to safety, and to his lawyer, Tony Oppegard, who sent me this newspaper article on which I based the song: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/14/charles-scott-howard-whistleblower-miner_n_960180.html The melody is partly based on a tune used by Woody Guthrie, who wrote many songs in support of working men, including miners. My thanks to Marco Acca for his great guitar accompaniment at very short notice (less than an hour). Hey, everyone! This song is featured on my favourite album by this epic band. I remember learning it from one of my dad's songbooks when I was a teenager. I didn't know the bass line or the rhythm guitar back then but still it was good practice for rhythm and alternate picking.

This is another song from Tony Oppegard's mining songs collection. He sent me a version performed by Chuck Ragan and Jon Gaunt which piqued my interest. On searching for more information about the song I found that it had been performed by The Kingston Trio, a group I particularly liked when I was first becoming interested in 'folk and country'. The song was written by Billy Edd Wheeler. From the music hall of fame comes this paragraph about the song: This song is mentioned in Billy Edd's story, "The company owned everything," about life in a coal camp. A coal tattoo is a blue mark left on a miner's skin when a piece of coal hits him, Chuck Ragan strums the guitar on his version, but I have decided to finger-pick my interpretation. Tony Oppegard has just pointed out to me that at the end of the second verse the lyrics are not quite correct. As I discovered after recording The Springhill Disaster copying lyrics from sites on the internet often leads to errors. This is another such case. The line in question should read 'This travelin' and lookin' I hate', not as I copied and therefore sang; 'This travellin' nook in my head'!!

This is the first of three mining songs with similar titles which I will be putting up over the next week. This song about the primitive bituminous-mining days in the American South was popularised by the Carter Family, who recorded it on June 8, 1938, in New York and released it on a 78 rpm disc. A. P. Carter reportedly learned it from miners in Wise County, Virginia. Maybelle Carter, who played lead guitar on the recording, with Sara as lead voice, said she remembered a drive in the spring of 1938 from A. P.'s home at Maces Spring to St. Charles, Lee County, Virginia, where A. P. got the words from an old man. Lee County lies directly south of the rich coal fields of Harlan County, Kentucky. The most famous cover version is by the incomparable Flatt & Scruggs. Other excellent cover versions have been performed by Doc & Merle Watson, Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard, Gary Brewer, Big Smith, The Red Rose Girls, Alice Gerrard & Mike Seeger, Beverly Smith & Carl Jones, and others. (Thanks to Tony Oppegard for this information). This song was sent to me by Tony Oppegard from his collection of songs relating to mining. The following information comes from Wikipedia: Harry Simms (December 25, 1911 - February 11, 1932), born Harry Simms Hersh, was a Jewish American labor leader from Springfield, Massachusetts. He was sent by the National Miners Union to Harlan County, Kentucky during the Harlan County War to organize the mine workers there. On February 10, 1932, Simms was shot near Brush Creek in Knox County by a sheriff's deputy who also worked as a mine guard for the local coal company. Simms died of his wound at Barbourville Hospital the next day. He was memorialized in a ballad, "The Death of Harry Simms" by Aunt Molly Jackson and Jim Garland, and his funeral service at the Bronx Coliseum attracted a crowd of some 20,000 people. The famous folksinger Pete Seeger popularized "The Death of Harry Simms" after learning it from Jim Garland at the Newport Folk Festival in the 1960s. Tao Rodriguez Seeger has performed a cover version of the song with the Allegro Youth Orchestra (available on YouTube). (I notice that the song writers used a little poetic licence in making him nineteen when he died when if fact he was actually twenty, but this would not have fitted the rhyme.) Here then is my interpretation of the song;

About a year ago, I uploaded a video with this same title, i.e. Silver and Gold. That one was a song from the repertoire of Burl Ives and was a Christmas song. I have just received a request from a viewer who had looked at that video thinking it was what he was looking for only to discover that whilst the title was what he wanted, the song was not. He has kindly sent me the lyrics to the one he thought he was going to see and I have watched one of the performer Vin Garbutt's versions on YouTube. I immediately felt I had to do this song straight away, so despite being very busy this week, have recorded my own version. Back in the 1980s in Britain, there was considerable unrest and conflict between miners and the police as the government of the time decided to close down many of the country's coal mines. This obviously caused great stress and hardship for thousands of men and women and their families who were reliant on the mines for their income. This song tells how one man overcame these difficulties. I found the story so moving that the first time I tried to sing it, I was unable to finish it as emotion took over and caused me to cry. I hope you like my version of this moving song.

Carrying on the music tradition is native son and current Lexington, Kentucky resident, Tyler Childers. Paintsville is located in the Big Sandy River Valley of Johnson County in Eastern Kentucky made famous for its lawlessness, religion, and booze, and a song about a horse thief, a rambling man, and an attempt to gain some good ol’ Appalachian self-justice is what “William Hill” is all about. Following his “Papaw” around to the Kentucky social institutions – church events and barber shops to name a few– as well as a lot of coon hunting with his dad, Tyler has heard a tale or two about the misadventures of a few good ol’ boys and he gives his own spin of these accounts behind a whisky-soaked voice well beyond his young age. Hazel Jane Dickens (1935 – 2011) was an American bluegrass singer songwriter and activist, who wrote provocative pro-union and feminist songs. The New York Times called her "a clarion-voiced advocate for coal miners and working people and a pioneer among women in bluegrass music." With Alice Gerrard, Dickens was one of the first women to record a bluegrass album. She wrote this song, also known as "It's Only a Coal Miner's Grave", after finding the grave of Francis Estep and caring enough to find out his history. This song was requested by Tony Oppegard, a lawyer who fights for the rights of coal miners. Richie Dotson plays Larry Sparks' "The Old Coal Mine" in the key of D. The 5th string is spiked at A, but the rest is standard, open "G" tuning. Some single string work is required but this is a great tune for banjo players who want to take their picking to the next level in open D. Please tell me what you think, and thank you for looking and listening! Richie Dotson http://www.AcousticBox.com

This is the second of three mining songs I am uploading which have similar names. Matt Andersen is a Canadian blues guitarist and singer-songwriter from New Brunswick. He has said that the song "Coal Mining Blues", the title song of his 2011 album, came out of living in Cape Breton for a year and a half. Apologies for the mis-spelling of Andersen in the title of the video! You can see a playlist of my mining songs here: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=CF909DA14CE415DF Lyrics and chords of this song can be found here: http://raymondfolk.wikifoundry.com/page/Coal+Mining+Blues+%28Matt+Andersen%29 For lyrics and chords of all my songs, please see my website: http://raymondfolk.wikifoundry.com

This is a clip of my nephew, Tony Busey, from about a year ago. He was working on this song and decided to try it out on one of my 4-string cigar box guitars. The song was a work-in-progress at the time, but he has since completed it. I thought he did pretty well considering he wasn't at all used to the open tuning and only four strings. Sorry about the video quality, I had to convert it, in order to post. Thanks for watching.

(Photo's belong to their copyright owners, I do Not claim ownership). "I just wanted to honor those that gave their lives" so you could turn your PC on. This video is dedicated to underground Miner's around the world, even Gem miners. I think coal miners are the most forgotten people on this Earth...Until an accident occurs. One person asked how far down is Hell?... "It's just a 1/4 mile down" was the reply. One shot shows a coin "25" that is how they use to buy things at the (Company Store) most people today didn't know this. Tennessee Ernie Ford wrote a song, "I owe my soul to the company store" When you ran out of these coins you started a tab/chit. thus...you have the story. I want to thank 2 people for their inspiration, guidance, and help: ulead123 & superglide63 and a few of my friends for their support to post it. INFO ABOUT THE COIN: Imagine spending your days in the depths of the earth; doing the dirty, dangerous work of mining coal. Then consider what it would be like to be paid for your labor with money that could be considered virtually worthless. This was the plight of many miners during the early 20th Century; this is the story of scrip. As coal mining in the Appalachian region of the United States began to develop in the late 1800's, mines were established in remote, rugged areas, far away from banks and stores. Partially from a need to supply household goods to miners and partially to capitalize on an opportunity to make a profit, mine owners established company stores in their mining town. As actual U. S. currency was difficult for mines to keep on hand in sufficient quantities, the companies began to issue their own scrip tokens as payment for the miners' wages. Most scrip was unique in appearance so that a mine's company store could immediately identify its own scrip, as most did not want to accept tokens issued by another company. Miners were given scrip in advance of their wages to buy necessities for the home, but also to pay rent on the company-owned houses they lived in, to buy tools and supplies for work, to pay utilities and medical care, and even to contribute to a mandatory funeral fund. All this was paid to the coal company. There was little retail competition in the coalfields and the prices at some company stores were often so high that miners virtually had nothing left to collect when payday arrived. According to Stan Cohen, in his book, King Coal: "Payment by scrip served a dual purpose. The miner could get wages in advance of his regular paycheck, and he did not have borrow money or charge items at the store, The company in turn did not need to keep extensive charge account records, nor were there difficult collection problems involved." Scrip started out in paper form but by the early 1900's was commonly being created in brass, copper, and aluminum coins. To conserve metal during World War II, fiber scrip was occasionally produced. Each company had its own version and each mine's company store accepted only its own scrip. The government ultimately outlawed the use of scrip and it began to decline in use in the 1950's, disappearing entirelyby the early 1970's. A variety of other industries besides coal - such as lumber, textiles, agriculture, paper, copper, gold, and silver—issued scrip, creating thousands of varieties from more than 30 states.
