I have found my new Chariot to get me around the #YouTubeGOLD mine site! Some new mining equipment has arrived at the site and today we get to learn all about them. #SluiceboxSteve has come by to help unbox two magnificent machines distributed by a USA company "RC4WD". All Metal.. and weighing 58 lbs.. this thing takes real effort to move around. But, when you put a 3s lipo into it.. the machine moves without effort! I have added ISO 32 Hydraulic oil, which is very thin and works so well. The thin oil allows for quick movement in the hydraulic rams and through the hydro block. I have put a replica action figure of my wife into the drivers seat of the Dozer, becuase it is simply a [email protected] @ss, just like her!! Hah! At the time of this filming, this model costs aprox $2699.00 USD + shipping The mining truck is the "1/14 SCALE EARTH HAULER 797F HYDRAULIC MINING TRUCK". The "Frickin' Massive Dump Truck". It is one of the largest RC vehicles I have had at the mine, and it is ALL METAL! RTR (Ready to Run) and weighing in at 220 lbs - this dump truck is the largest dump truck I have ever seen in person. It arrived by freight (which means on a full size SEMI TRUCK), and it is simply a wonder to behold in person. There are no servos to turn the tires. It is actually a MOTOR that moves steering rods. This truck can carry a payload of 440 lbs!! The Battery can be up to a 22,000mah 3s Lipo, OR a DEEP CYCLE 12v DC Battery. I will show you that in the coming weeks.. as I already have one here at my show. The cost of this model is $4000 USD, + shipping. Now that we have these products here at the mine, we are going to be able to move the yardage we are hoping for. There are two types of mining: underground mining and surface mining. When the coal seam is fewer than 125 feet under the surface, it is mined by surface mining. Coal that is deeper than 125 feet is removed from the ground by underground mining. Underground mining is used when the coal seam lies deep in the earth. In an underground mine only some of the coal is removed. The coal that remains helps support the mine roof. Underground mines look like a system of tunnels. The tunnels are used for traveling throughout the mine, moving coal from place to place and allowing air to circulate in the mine. The coal that is mined is put on conveyor belts. The conveyor belts take the coal to the surface. There are three types of underground mines: slope, drift, and shaft. When the coal seam is close to the surface but too deep to use surface mining, a slope mine can be built. In a slope mine a tunnel slants down from the surface to the coal seam. A drift mine is built when the coal seam lies in the side of a hill or mountain. Drift mines may also be built in a surface mine that has become too deep. There are many drift mines in the eastern United States. The most common type of mine in Illinois is the shaft mine. These mines may be 125 to 1,000 feet deep. A large hole, or shaft, is drilled down into the ground until it reaches the coal seam.

You’ve heard of it. You know it’s controversial. But you might not know what it actually involves. Never fear: We’re here to put some fracking knowledge in your brain. Fracking is the delightfully cheeky-sounding nickname for Hydraulic Fracturing... which sounds a little bit less delightful and more like something you do to your enemies in Starcraft. But no! It is something we do to rocks. In the simplest terms, hydraulic fracturing is a way of getting more of the valuable fluids, like oil and natural gas, out of geologic formations under the ground. Deep under earth’s surface, there are deposits of rock that have huge reserves of oil and natural gas within them. But these fossil fuels aren’t like big lakes where you can just stick a straw in and suck. No, these reserves of oil and natural gas are found locked up in pores distributed throughout vast layers of rock, like shale. So how do you get them out at a reasonable pace? Let’s look at a typical fracking setup for something like shale gas: You start with a deep, vertical well, drilling a hole down to the level of the shale you want to mine. The depth will vary, but just for example, one company claims its average fracking well depth is 7,700 feet. That’s deep: almost one and a half miles, or about 2.3 kilometers. When you’re at the right depth, you take a 90-degree turn and continue to drill horizontally, parallel to the target rock layer. This horizontal section of the well can also travel thousands of feet. Now here’s where the “fracturing” comes in. First, you open up holes in the horizontal section of the pipe. Then, you vigorously push a liquid cocktail known as fracking fluid down into the borehole under high pressure. This fracking fluid is usually a mixture of water, some chemical additives -- like acids to help dissolve the rock, and gels to thicken the fluid -- and finally, solid particles called proppants – we’ll get to those in a second. When the mixture reaches the horizontal section of the pipe, it bleeds out through the holes into the surrounding rock, and the extremely high pressure causes the rock to form tons of little fractures, or cracks. Through these cracks, the reserves of fossil fuels contained in the rock can escape into the well to be pumped back up to the surface. What once was entombed in ancient rock is now on the way to powering your car or heating the water for your next shower. And those proppants I mentioned, which are often just grains of sand, help “prop” the cracks in the rock open, so the Earth’s precious bodily fluids continue to escape into the well without the miners applying continuous pressure. So that’s how it works, but then there’s the entirely separate question of whether fracking is a good idea. It’s controversial in many parts of the world. Some people claim it consumes too much fresh water, and worry about what will be done with the fracking fluid after it’s been used. And some opponents wonder if it will create earthquakes, or cause chemical contaminants to leak into our groundwater. There is no time like mining time - and #YouTubeGOLD is in full effect, firing on all cylinders. First I must get some pay dirt to the plant. This is a challenge as I live in the middle of the Alberta prairies - so I jump in my full size truck to head down to my sweet spot at the river. I load up on potential Gold and head back to the plant. When I arrive I see that Everett has joined us.. and is ready to hope in the Wheel Loader! "Sluice Box Steve" is also onsite - and ready to rip into the pay dirt with the excavator. I am running the Haul Truck & Bull Dozer today. Are we going to find Gold?! Possibly.. but the true secret of this show - is nothing you see is real. Everything is staged (well as much as we can plan when playing!), and though we are mining for real gold (yes it's real pay dirt), the true Gold is the experience we get as friends, what we hope the viewers get watching a couple of goofballs entertain you with some very cool toys. The Homestake Mine was a deep underground gold mine located in Lead, South Dakota. Until it closed in 2002 it was the largest and deepest gold mine in North America. The mine produced more than 40 million troy ounces (approximately 1.25 million kilograms) of gold during its lifetime. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * History of the Homestake Mine: The Homestake deposit was discovered by Fred and Moses Manuel, Alex Engh and Hank Harney in April 1876, during the Black Hills Gold Rush. A trio of mining entrepreneurs, George Hearst, Lloyd Tevis, and James Ben Ali Haggin, bought it from them for $70,000 the following year. George Hearst arrived at the mine in October 1877, and took active control of the property. Hearst had to haul in all the mining equipment by wagons from the nearest railhead in Sidney, Nebraska. Arthur De Wint Foote worked as an engineer. Despite the remote location, an 80-stamp mill began crushing Homestake ore in July 1878. The partners sold shares in the Homestake Mining Company, and listed it on the New York Stock Exchange in 1879. The Homestake would become one of the longest-listed stocks in the history of the NYSE (Con Edison's original name was New York Gas Light and was listed in 1824). Hearst consolidated and enlarged the Homestake property by fair and foul means. He bought out some adjacent claims, and secured others in the courts. By the time Hearst left the Black Hills in March 1879, he had added the claims of Giant, Golden Star, Netty, May Booth, Golden Star No. 2, Crown Point, Sunrise, and General Ellison to the original two claims of the Manuel Brothers, Golden Terra and Old Abe, totaling 30 acres. The ten-stamp mill had become 200, and 500 employees worked in the mine, mills, offices and shops. He owned the Boulder Ditch and water rights to Whitewood Creek, monopolizing the region. His railroad, Black Hills & Fort Pierre Railroad, gave him access to eastern Dakota territory. By 1900, the Homestake owned 300 claims, on 2000 acres, and was worked by more than 2000 employees. In 1901, the mine started using compressed air locomotives, replacing the mules and horses by the 1920s. Charles Washington Merrill introduced cyanidization to augment mercury-amalgamation for gold recovery. "Cyanide Charlie" finally achieved 94 per cent recovery. The gold was shipped to the Denver Mint. By 1906, the Ellison Shaft reached 1,550 feet, the B&M 1,250 feet, the Golden Star 1,100 feet, and the Golden Prospect 900 feet, producing 1,500,000 tons of ore. A disastrous fire struck on 25 March 1907, which took forty days to extinguish after the mine was flooded. Another disastrous fire struck in 1919. In 1927, company geologist Donald H. McLaughlin used a winze from the 2,000 level to demonstrate ore reached the 3,500 foot level. The Ross shaft was started in 1934, a second winze from the 3,500 foot level reached 4,100 feet, and a third winze from 4,100 feet was started in 1937. The Yates shaft was started in 1938. Production ceased from 1943 until 1945, due to Limitation Order L-208 from the Government. By 1975, mining operations has reached the 6,800 foot level, and two winzes were planned to 8,000 feet. Independent of the definite date of exhaustion, we have to change to renewables. Another reason is global warming; we have to reduce our carbon emission. This switch is not easy; there is one major block on the road: Storage. Storage is the key to renewable energy. Let's try to understand the global growth of renewable energy, special the growth of photovoltaic. In this plot, I present the installed capacity of photovoltaic. The scaling is logarithmic, that means, every major line is a factor of ten. We start in the ninety's, only 100MW of photovoltaic where installed, mainly in the US. What happened during the last two decades? At the beginning of the nineties, the US was the leading photovoltaic country. Then came Japan with a strong growth of photovoltaic, overtaken by Germany in the new century. But the race is on, Spain, Italy, Australia, even Canada and others have a steep development. On a global scale, even the growth rate is growing. And in 2012 we crossed the 100GW as I learned yesterday! In the case that the growth rate is 30% every year, what will happen? Within the next decade, the production of photovoltaic power reaches the global demand for electricity. My idea is, don't pump water up the hill, pump water below the hill, lift the hill and store the energy! That is the basic idea of the Hydraulic Hydro Storage To build such a system, we have to look into the ground. We want to cut free a block, the size of a stadium. The first step is, to dig a shaft in the ground. From there we drill two circular service tunnels. From the surface, we drill holes into the ground, to guide the sawing strings. Sawing strings, as used in a quarry, cut out the surface of the cylinder. Then we can lift the cylinder, but don't forget the O-rings to seal the system. All the necessary technologies are well known in the mining industry. Assuming, we are able to cut free such a huge block, the physical properties are amazing. The cylinder should have a regular shape, as high as the diameter. This means, the height is two times the radius. And we can lift the cylinder up to a height of the radius r. If we would move it beyond r, it could get stuck, not a god idea for such a huge block. Calculating the mass of this block is simple, it is proportional to the third power of the radius. The height we can lift the block is r. The Calculation of the storage capacity is straight forward; the rule is strength of the gravitation, multiplied by the mass and the height. That's all, to be more precise we have to consider the density of the rock and some geometric properties. Amazingly, the storage capacity is growing with the fourth power of the radius. This is not very exciting, if the cost of the system grow as fast, but this is not the case. The cost grows proportional with the surface, and that is definitely proportional to the second power of the radius. The result is a unique decrease of cost per kWh with size. One divided by the second power of the radius. Keep the math simple and say: Double the radius and the price drops to a quarter per kWh storage capacity. This is the unique property of the new system! Let's come back to our checklist for the perfect storage system. The Hydraulic Hydro Storage has a low price per kWh, due to the fascinating scaling effect; the price can go down to a few Dollars per kWh storage capacity. The efficiency is similar to pumped hydro, and we know, pumped hydro has 80% efficiency Last not least: The footprint is a hundred times smaller than an upper basin of a pumped hydro system. There is no toxic or radioactive waste; there is no waste at all. Renewable energy as solar energy and wind power need storage, Solving the storage problem means: We will have a clean and sustainable future! Thank you for your attention!

Water from the Miocene ditch, originally constructed for the Cherokee and Spring Valley Hydraulic Mining Companies in the 1870's, delivers water through a penstock to spin several generators to create electricity. The power plant can be accessed from the Lake Oroville Nelson Bar Boat Ramp parking lot. The water is held in Kunkle reservoir and then enters a riveted steel pipe approximately 30" in diameter and then into the penstock above the power house. The water is then discharged into an open ditch again to keep traveling south. I am not sure if the power house was original to the hydraulic mining operations which did have electricity for 24 hour operations using arc lamps. A historic inverted siphon that carried water from Concow reservoir over the north fork of the Feather River also fed Kunkle reservoir water.

Tucked away on construction sites most people won’t ever see are dump trucks so large it’s hard to believe are real. On this episode we bring you the World’s largest dump truck. The BelAZ 75710 made by Belarusian company BelAZ is the world largest, highest payload capacity haul truck. The truck is built with a conventional two axle setup but has doubled wheels, four to an axle. It has 4 wheel drive and 4 wheel hydraulic steering, which is unusual. The truck is 30 feet or 9 meters tall with wheels taller than most people. The BelAz 75710 is powered by two 2,300 horsepower motors with a top speed of 40 mph or 64 kph. It was designed for work in giant mining operations. The truck itself weighs over 750,000 pounds or 340 000 kg, to put that into perspective the average midsize car weighs 3500 lbs or 1600 kg making this dump truck weigh the equivalent of the combined weight of 215 cars. When it comes to hauling, this beast can carry up to 992,000 pounds or 450000 kg of material. Now I’m sure you’re thinking of picking one up, it’ll cost you around 6 million dollars. Earth Eater is the name the manufacturer gives this particular bucket, but its the style of the bucket that matters to Operations Manager Justin Burggraff. Burggraff said the placement of the chains, on the outside of the bucket rather than the inside, and the weight of the material used to make the bucket, are what should heighten productivity. When the chains are on the inside, they made it harder to carry the bucket. You had to pull it in closer to the machine to pick it up and carry it. And in addition, when the bucket dumped, the chains on the inside would only allow the bucket to go near vertical, but not vertical, Burggraff said. Every bit of reach that the dragline can gain helps us. If the dragline cannot reach the dirt into the spoil pile and build the correct spoil pile, they move less dirt than what they are projected to move, which means another piece of equipment has to pick that up. So, its important to us that the dragline is able to attain its maximum reach. Burggraff said the buckets performance will be closely monitored to compare it with other buckets. We had passed by this site many times, but could never determine which mine this was until a friend of a friend of a friend discovered an old map that finally identified this mine for us as the Highland Mary. The first records of the Highland Mary that I could find date back to 1869 and the company sold shares to the public in 1872. The mine was initially a drift mine and old newspaper articles reference an adit driving back 700 feet (we did find the portal for this adit, but it had eroded shut long ago). The mine was sold for back taxes in 1921 and the last records found for the mine date to 1923. The company did issue shares of stock and the paper certificates can still be found from time to time.

Through the story of my own experience as a former Appalachian coal miner, Coal Mined is a film about heritage, family, and coming to terms with the impact the coal industry has had on our lives and communities. www.thethoughtfulcoalminer.com -- While studying communications at Berea College​, I realized the importance of documentary film as a means of reaching the public. I took a documentary film class under the direction of Dr. Gordon Gray​ and, along with the assistance of two other students in our group, Dylan K. I was hesitant to do a documentary about myself, but time constraints while taking a full course load and having a family meant traveling back home to conduct more interviews was simply impossible. I was eventually able to take a digital editing class with Dr. Jacob Dickerson​, and now almost two years later, I decided to spend some time cleaning up the original cut. It's still very rudimentary, but at least a bit better than the original. Again thanks to Peter Hille of MACED​, Stephen Sanders of the Appalachian Citizens' Law Center​, David Cook of Grow Appalachia​, Terry L Steele​, and Wilma Lee Steele​. for their interviews. Sorry, I'm totally sick with a cold at the moment, but I know so many viewers of the show would like to see more of this big 500lb machine. It's quite a rig and certainly is very powerful. Amazing how far the hobby of Radio Control, and Robotics has come. From the industrial revolution and huge manufacturing plants - to the home fabricator who has a dream - human beings, and the machines they make are incredible. I wish I could take credit for building this amazing machine, but instead I am the second owner. This is a 1 of a kind prototype built by an Ontario, Canada man, and his company "Tiny Titan Earth Movers". He sold this machine to me because he has plans for an excavator. Really cool! This loader is several years old - and certainly needs some TLC, so I have been systematically going through this rig, to learn about it - and ensure that everything is operating as it should. Loose set screws, and normal wear and tear is what I have found - and really this is a fantastic lesson for me in completely understanding how a machine like this can be built, and maintained. All I can say is WOW. Humans are amazing creatures. Any Radio Control machine can seem intimidating at first glance. Many folks feel as though they would have troubles learning to repair their own rigs. Truth be known - these machines follow logic. If you can source where your problem is coming from, and start isolating the root cause(s) - you can fix your rig! It's a matter of being a detective, an engineer, and a DIY repair person. Heck, that's part of the fun of the hobby. The more you learn about your rigs.. (how to take them apart, and re-assemble - the more you will understand the mechanics and simplicity of trouble shooting deductions). As of 2016, it is the world's largest, highest payload capacity haul truck. The BelAz 75710 is equipped with a two-axle setup yet the wheels are a four to an axle! Because of this, it also needs eight large 59/80R63 tires. Four-wheel drive and four-wheel hydraulic steering is seen on this truck. A funny addition considering its turning radius is only 20 meters. It can be loaded to a capacity of nearly 500 short tons and still drive as usual. Though empty, it still weighs over 350 tons. It is 66 feet long, 26 feet tall, and 32 feet wide. That’s about three times as tall as a Giraffe. Rather than using the power of one single engine, it is powered by two 65-litre 16-cylinder diesel engines, each of these engines having 2,300 horsepower. Since the fuel consumption is 198 g/kWh per engine, there is an option to use only one engine when carrying smaller loads. At its best, it can travel 40 miles per hour. BelAz believes in this 2013 truck so much, that they have invested $644 million in increasing its total production capacity. #7 Caterpillar 797F The Caterpillar 797F is Caterpillar's largest, highest payload capacity haul truck! It appears to be every little boy’s dream to drive one of these when he grows up as the 797 series is the perfect Tonka truck model! The Caterpillar 797F was first mentioned to the public at MINExpo International in September, 2008. This guy was the successor to the 797B. The 797F has a higher payload capacity and a more powerful, more efficient engine than its predecessor. Because of these increases, Caterpillar could meet the needs of mine operators' so they were able to increase the efficiency of their work. They also saved money by reducing the costs considering the payload was much higher, meaning less trips, less fuel, less time. The payload capacity? 400 short tons! The horsepower? A gross 4,000! The top speed? 42 miles per hour! This truck is fully geared with a rear axle mounted, computer controlled, seven speed planetary transmissions that is equipped with an integral lock-up torque converter. #6 Bucyrus MT 6300AC You have to see this military-style machine to believe it! Built for mining, it is a sight to behold and a wondrous machine unlike any other! The Bucyrus MT6300AC is an off road, double-axle, ultra class, diesel/AC electric powertrain haul truck. It was designed and manufactured by Bucyrus International Inc. in America. The MT6300AC is the company’s biggest, highest payload capacity haul truck, and closing in on the highest in the world at 400 short tons. Even fully-loaded, this hauler can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. On February 19, 2010, the Terex Unit Rig MT6300AC was re-branded which created the Bucyrus MT6300AC. There are three main components which slow down the airplane on the runway: Primary Braking with disc or carbon brakes similar to your car Secondary with reverse thrust Thrid with aerodynamical braking with the ground spoilers So we have two words in reverse thrust. “Reverse” cause the turbines output is being guided into the reverse direction and as you might not know we apply "thrust" in order to increase the braking action. So let´s look at this video to see what happens at touch-down. Here you can see engine number one of a Airbus A320. At touch-down these flaps open up, so called “reverser doors”. They act as guiding vanes in the mid section of the bypass-channel of the turbine and force the accelerated air of the fan to blow into the opposite direction. Now these reverser doors don´t open automatically at touch-down, no you lift up these little levers which will activate the hydraulic system to apply pressure to the actuator which then opens the reverser doors. Keeping the levers in this position only give you “Idle reverse”, but as soon as you move the levers to the aft position, the engine will spool up creating more thrust increasing the reverse output. The engines will increase thrust up to 70% which then resembles in “Full reverse thrust”. I know it´s odd to think that you would apply thrust again just after touch-down. You can definitely hear the difference between “Idle” and “full reverse thrust”, trust me :) Using the reversers significantly decrease the landing distance, varying between aircraft, weight and environmental factors. If you look at this great video of here, showing a Boeing 747 touching down and applying full reverse thrust you can clearly see how the water on the runway gets blown forwards. I actually experienced that myself landing on a snow covered runway, we applied full reverse thrust and you could literally see the snow blowing infront of the aircraft. So when do you use reverse thrust? Using “idle reverse” at touch-down is mandatory by many aircraft manufactures and airlines. First and far most to immediately decrease the aircrafts speed and to stabilize the aircrafts roll out plus to reduce brake usage. Landing on wet or snow contaminated runways using reverse thrust is absolutely vital to decelerate the aircraft and preventing it from skidding and keeping it in a straight line. Full reverse thrust is not permitted at some airports due to noise abendement procedures or at least restricted in between hours from here to then. Nevertheless pilots can use full reverse thrust when deemed necessary, but might have to state their decision in a report. Airplanes with wing mounted engines may only use full reverse thrust until slowing down to a specified speed, cause using the reverser below that speed could blow up loose gravel on the runway which could get sucked into the engine and damage the turbine. For example in an Airbus A320 you would have to reduce "full reverse thrust to idle reverse" at 70 knots, and retract the reverser at speeds below 40 knots. There are many different reverser types out there, but all work after the basic principle by forcing the air or even the exhaust into the opposite direction. No context. As if they sprouted from the ground. Having been absent for so long, such warnings carry no weight. Too little, too late. My life is permeated with gold, and moulded by human efforts to extract it. I understand this and I am not threatened by it. The old tailings piles are mine. In the winter we built huge snow jumps at the bottom and skied off them. Abandoned rusting trucks and pipes and machinery are mine. I discovered them with my friends. The old hydraulics ditches are mine - perfectly graded for my mountain bike. The old mine road leading to my blueberry patch is mine, and so are the jars of jam I made from the fruit. The swimming hole is mine, where the cold creek from the mountains merges with warm water from the lake. I know it’s mine because I wrote my name on it hundreds of time, with a stick, on red oxidised muddy bank where no plants grow. Gold has a way of drawing people in, and history has a way of repeating itself. Chasing long-forgotten riches, the new signs mark the rise of a new mine in old country. They say my home has “proven values. high grade. high returns. Low environmental Impact.” They call my trees overburden, my rocks ore, and my streams contaminated. The company answers questions I never asked. Who cares about high grades or high returns? Do the miners pick my blueberries when they are working beside the road? Do they put their feet in my creek? Are they making new tailings piles for skiing? New ditch lines for biking? Will they leave us new treasures in the bush ? When the gold that defines this place is finally gone, what will remain?

McMahon Services Ultra HIgh Reach Demolition Excavator

Leading construction services company, McMahon Services, took delivery of the $3 million Ultra High Reach Demolition Excavator from the United States late last year. Weighing 160 tonnes and with a reach of up to 45 metres, the excavator is capable of deconstructing buildings up to 12 storeys high, whilst working from the ground. McMahon Services' Demolition and Operations Manager, Chris Latham, says there is nothing else like it anywhere in Australia. "The Ultra High Reach Demolition Excavator basically uses a giant hydraulic shear to deconstruct buildings piece by piece," said Mr Latham. "This means there is less noise and dust emissions, making it ideal for confined suburban projects such as the Fisher Street building demolition in Fullarton. "This machine not only brings structures down faster but it is safer than other methods of demolition." Mr Latham says the excavator can operate 2.6 tonne shears at a height of 45 metres and 5.5 tonne shears at 30 metres, and is capable of cutting steel and concrete members up to a metre thick. "Demolishing large structures is traditionally labour intensive and involves a combination of cranes, small machinery and hand held oxy cutting tools. This means buildings have to be slowly taken apart level by level which is time consuming, expensive and potentially dangerous," he said. "The excavator's capabilities make it extremely cost effective and minimises the risk to our site personnel, the public and adjoining properties. "Despite its incredible size the excavator can also be transported anywhere in Australia and we've already had interest from a number of mining companies to carry out mine decommissioning work."

As the manufacturing process does not include any welding, seamless pipes are perceived to be stronger and more reliable... Advances since the 1970s in materials, process control, and non-destructive testing, allow correctly specified welded pipe to replace seamless in many applications. Welded pipe is formed by rolling plate and welding the seam (usually by Electric resistance welding ("ERW"), or Electric Fusion Welding ("EFW")). The weld flash can be removed from both inner and outer surfaces using a scarfing blade. The weld zone can also be heat-treated to make the seam less visible. Welded pipe often have tighter dimensional tolerances than the seamless type, and can be cheaper to manufacture... ERW pipes are manufactured from the longitudinal welding of steel. The welding process for ERW pipes is continuous, as opposed to welding of distinct sections at intervals. ERW process uses steel coil as feedstock. The High Frequency Induction Technology (HFI) welding process is used for manufacturing ERW pipes. In this process, the current to weld the pipe is applied by means of an induction coil around the tube... Large-diameter pipe (25 centimetres (10 in) or greater) may be ERW, EFW or Submerged Arc Welded ("SAW") pipe. A water turbine is a rotary machine that converts kinetic and potential energy of water into mechanical work. Water turbines were developed in the 19th century and were widely used for industrial power prior to electrical grids. Now they are mostly used for electric power generation. Water turbines are mostly found in dams to generate electric power from water kinetic energy. Water wheels have been used for hundreds of years for industrial power. Their main shortcoming is size, which limits the flow rate and head that can be harnessed. The migration from water wheels to modern turbines took about one hundred years. Development occurred during the Industrial revolution, using scientific principles and methods. They also made extensive use of new materials and manufacturing methods developed at the time. The earliest known water turbines date to the Roman Empire. Two helix-turbine mill sites of almost identical design were found at Chemtou and Testour, modern-day Tunisia, dating to the late 3rd or early 4th century AD. The horizontal water wheel with angled blades was installed at the bottom of a water-filled, circular shaft. The water from the mill-race entered the pit tangentially, creating a swirling water column which made the fully submerged wheel act like a true turbine. All common water machines until the late 19th century (including water wheels) were basically reaction machines; water pressure head acted on the machine and produced work. A reaction turbine needs to fully contain the water during energy transfer. In 1866, California millwright Samuel Knight invented a machine that took the impulse system to a new level. Inspired by the high pressure jet systems used in hydraulic mining in the gold fields, Knight developed a bucketed wheel which captured the energy of a free jet, which had converted a high head (hundreds of vertical feet in a pipe or penstock) of water to kinetic energy. This is called an impulse or tangential turbine. The water's velocity, roughly twice the velocity of the bucket periphery, does a u-turn in the bucket and drops out of the runner at low velocity. In 1879, Lester Pelton, experimenting with a Knight Wheel, developed a Pelton wheel (double bucket design), which exhausted the water to the side, eliminating some energy loss of the Knight wheel which exhausted some water back against the center of the wheel. In about 1895, William Doble improved on Pelton's half-cylindrical bucket form with an elliptical bucket that included a cut in it to allow the jet a cleaner bucket entry. This is the modern form of the Pelton turbine which today achieves up to 92% efficiency. Pelton had been quite an effective promoter of his design and although Doble took over the Pelton company he did not change the name to Doble because it had brand name recognition. Turgo and cross-flow turbines were later impulse designs.

And in fact between the 2 of them they have travelled more than 3,400 miles in total, that’s about the distance from Miami to Seattle. BERTHA: Big Bertha is the world’s largest tunnel boring machine… and here she is in 41 pieces leaving Osaka Bay Japan on route to the United States of America. The 80 million dollar 57.5 foot diameter Bertha was designed specifically for the SR99 Tunnel Project commissioned by the Washington State Department of Transportation. Named after Seattle’s only Female Mayor, Bertha Knight Landes, the massive machine Bertha is 326 feet long and weighs 7,000 tons or 14 million pounds. And as she winds her way under Seattle, Bertha will chew through approximately 35 feet of rock and soil each day. She will also, using her giant pair of arms, automatically erect and seal thousands of concrete panels as she goes. She is simply incredible, and is surely one of the greatest machines ever devised. BAGGER 293: Bagger 293 is the biggest terrestrial vehicle of all time (and the biggest mining machine ever). Built in 1995 by the German industrial company TAKRAF, Bagger 293 is a giant bucket wheel excavator that currently works in a brown coal mine near Hambach in western Germany. At 738 feet long and towering 315 feet high, this gigantic contraption weighs 14,200 tonnes or about 31 million pounds. Powered by enough electricity to sustain a medium sized town, each of Bagger 293s 20 buckets can hold about 80 bathtubs worth of dirt, meaning it can move about 8.5 million cubic feet of earth per day. … to put that in perspective, that’s the equivalent of digging a really, really big hole…. and to be more precise… that’s about the size of digging a football field 30 meters or about 100 feet deep, in a single day. If you want buy one of these monstrous mechanical marvels, you’ll need at least 100 million US dollars and a crew of 5 to drive it… but you won’t have to worry about speeding tickets, as this Big Bopper has a top speed of only 0.9 kilometres per hour.
