Decrease your body fat and maximize lean muscle with this program http://athleanx.com/x/program-to-build-pure-muscle Learning how to measure body fat at home is one of the best skills you will learn to assist you in your fitness transformation. Relying on the scale is simply not an accurate way to gauge progress since lifting weights is likely going to cause you to gain weight while you may be dramatically lowering your body fat percentage. A scale could make you think you are off track on your way to your lean goals. Instead, mastering your measuring abilities of your own body fat will help you to determine your true progress. In this video, I show you how to measure your body fat yourself in your own home to figure out how close you are to your six pack abs. One method is more expensive than the other, however when you realize just how important this number will be to your progress, you may just find a way to add this tool to your gym equipment. First, skin fold calipers are a classic home testing option. Are they the most accurate? No. However, they are the most readily available and don’t require the set up that a DEXA scan would. The tradeoff in accuracy is not that high, given that as you become more skilled in pinching…your accuracy could be within 1-3% of the exact number. If you would rather use a more economical method for testing your body fat level at home however, you can easily do that as well. When you realize just what calipers are testing it becomes very easy to see how you can do this with a simple fifty cent tape measure. Calipers are literally measuring the thickness of the skin fold that you pinch when doing your body fat measurements. If you can (easier when you enlist the help of someone else) simply pinch in the locations shown in this video and use a standard tape measure to mark out the thickness of the fold. Average out the results performed on your chest, abdomen and thigh and determine your body fat with this chart: Ellington Darden: 1/4 inch pinch is 5 to 8 percent body fat 1/2 inch pinch is 9 to 13 percent body fat 3/4 inch pinch is 14 to 18 percent body fat 1 inch pinch is 19 to 22 percent body fat 1 1/2 inch pinch is 23 to 27 percent body fat 2 inch pinch is 28 to 32 percent body fat 2 1/2 inch pinch is 33 percent body fat and up Alternatively, if you get your skin fold measurements either with a caliper or with the old fashioned tape measure method you can input them at https://www.escablo.com/en/app/Body-Fat-Percentage-Calculator to determine your current level of body fat. For a complete workout and nutrition program geared at helping you to maximize every ounce of lean muscle you can build while minimizing your body fat, be sure to head to http://athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System. Learn how to calculate your body fat percentage at home. In this video I review multiple methods including calipers, circumference measurements, tape measure, and mirror method. Get your BF% 🔥FREE 6 Week Body Transformation Challenge: http://bit.ly/lose-fat160 Fat Loss Calculator: http://bit.ly/2x0pd3L If you want to learn the best way to measure your body fat percentage accurately then you've found the right video. I'm going to go over exactly what you'll need to get this job done in a way that'll produce reliable results at home fast. Of course there are options like hydrostatic weighing and dexa scans however for this video I'm just going to assume that you're not even going to bother with these methods because they're expensive hard to find and they take a lot of time. Realistically we want to stick to the options that are simple and we want to find a way to have accurate results without breaking the bank. So the first way we can do this is by using a method that can be done in our own homes using materials available to us right now and that's through circumference measurements. All you need is a measuring tape. If you're a man between the ages of 18 - 26 years old you're going to measure three spots: the circumference of your right forearm right below the elbow, your and right at your belly button, and your upper right arm a little below your shoulder. If your a 27 year old man or older the only difference is instead of measuring your upper right arm you're going to measure your hips. For women if you're 18 to 26 years old you're going to measure your abs at your belly button, your right thigh right below your glute, and you're right forearm. And if you're over 27 years old you're going to measure you're right calf right below the knee instead of your right forearm. Then you just plug in your stats into a calculator that I'll link up below. Next up is the bioelectrical impedance device and in my opinion this is one of the easiest ways to track your body fat. These are the devices that you see that look like video game controllers and the scales that come with metal strips on them. And the way they work is they send a small electric pulse through your body which travels faster through muscle than it does through fat and depending on how fast it travels through your body and returns back to the machine, the device calculates your body fat percentage. Some things you want to be aware of to get an accurate reading are one, make sure that you have full contact with the metal parts of the device. So make sure you're feet or your hands are in contact with the metal parts of your device as much as possible. If using a handheld device don't squeeze the life out of it just hold it with a regular grip. Make sure you hold your hands straight out in front of you and lockout your elbows. And then just hold still while it takes your body fat percentage. Next we have the skinfold calipers. This device can take your body fat percentage a couple different ways. The simplest way is to take one measurement a couple inches above your hip bone. However if you want a more accurate result I recommend taking three measurements. If you're a man you're going to measure at your chest, your abs, and your thigh. For the chest measurement you want a diagonal skinfold right between your nipple line and your armpit. For the abs we want to be one to two inches to the right of the belly button. And for the thigh we want to take it at the midpoint between your hip and your knee. For women we want to do the tricep at the midpoint right between the shoulder and the elbow. The supreallyac located about two inches above the hip bone and the same thigh measurement as for men. And then you plug your measurements into a chart which I'll include links to in the description. There are also some really cheap options for skinfold measurement devices on Amazon which makes this an inexpensive yet accurate way to take your body fat. The downside is that this one is obviously more time consuming then just doing bioelectrical impedance. Next we have online calculators that say they can do it based on your weight your height your age and your activity level. These calculators make no logical sense for how they actually figure out your body fat. So I would stay away from them. Last buy not least is what I call the mirror method. Stand in front of the mirror and take a good look at your shape and how your body fat is distributed. Body fat percentage can be calculated at home! All you need is a measuring tape if you're a lady and a measuring tape and a scale if your'e a guy and a calculator and you'll be good to go. Body fat percentage is a more accurate tool for assessing your health than your BMI which we discussed in last week's video. You don't need to go to the gym and have a trainer use calipers or another device to find your body fat percentage either! The method used in this week's video is just as accurate as either method. Master of Macros: http://www.thinkeatlift.com/master/ James Krieger's articles: http://weightology.net/weightologyweekly/?page_id=146 Mike Matthews' video: https://youtu.be/RU8Wkgxfzf0 Tags for search engines (ignore this) The most popular methods for determining body fat percentage are: Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) devices (you know the scales that have a metal surface and you step on the barefoot or those devices you hold with your hands at the gym), Mathematical formulas such as the US Navy formula or the YMCA formula, and skinfold calipers. Some people also use Bod Pod, Hydrostatic Weighing, and DEXA but they are not common, so we'll not discuss them here. Although as a side note, if it's convenient for you to get a DEXA scan, I recommend you do it. DEXA scans your entire body with X-rays and tells you very precisely how much fat you have. Then all the rest of your life you'll have that DEXA scan as a reference point for your current body fat level. Hydration status can also mess up with the readings of BIA. You could get very different body fat percentage readings in the same day just because of your hydrations status. So in conclusion BIA is not reliable, I don't recommend you use it. Skin Fold Calipers can be pretty accurate actually depending on the brand and if you use them correctly. There are brands that have you measure up to 6 points on your body and others only one place. They usually give different results. But I think the biggest problem with these calipers is that most people don't know how to use them. You have to grab just the right amount of skin every time - not too much and not too little, and always do it in the same places. Again I think this can be learned with a bit of practice and you can get a result that's within 1 percent of your real body fat percentage. Here's the interesting thing about your waist measurement: it goes up and down with your body fat percentage. For most people, not everybody but for most people, each body fat percentage has a certain corresponding waist measurement. At 6 feet tall, 190lbs ripped is a very advanced level of muscle development. But this person has only been training for 6 months so there's no way that they're close to their genetic potential. This tells me right of the bat that they probably need to lose about 20lbs of fat to get to around 10%. I can almost guarantee it.

How to get rid of annoying stubborn fat? How to get the body of your dreams in no time? There are 6 different types of body fat based on where on the body it is mainly accumulated. Here are the most effective ways to make fat disappear for every body type. Running or swimming at least 30 minutes every day will help you burn full upper body fat right off. If it seems impossible for you to fit any of those in your busy schedule, try brisk walking. Drink green tea. It’s a great natural fat burner because it’s loaded with antioxidants that can boost metabolism. Plus, if you’re doing some physical exercise, green tea will also enhance its effect. If you don’t eat breakfast to kick start your metabolism in the morning, you’ll feel hungrier, more tired and just groggy throughout the day, which will trick your body into eating more in an attempt to get energy. Find out how many calories you need on a daily basis using an online calorie calculator. It’ll take into account your gender, age, height, weight, level of activity, and your weight-loss goals. Then, you can just divide all the daily calorie intake number by 5 to figure out how many calories each meal should give you. Make sure that you’re getting enough sleep. Sleep deprivation can lead to hormonal imbalances, an increased appetite, and weight gain, which will result in fat being stored mostly in your belly and back. TIMESTAMPS Full upper body fat 0:45 Lower abdomen fat 2:17 Lower body fat 4:05 A bloated stomach 5:40 Lower body fat, including lower legs 7:23 A large stomach with upper back fat 8:42 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -Do aerobics because this type of fat appears due to a lack of physical activity. Stop consuming processed sugar, and forget about sugar-sweetened drinks. -Avoid stress and learn to relax. The stress hormone cortisol makes fat collect in the belly, so a good option for you is to meditate or do some breathing exercises. Drink green tea. It’s a great natural fat burner because it’s loaded with antioxidants that can boost metabolism. -Walk up hills and stairs. Riding a bike uphill or increasing the treadmill’s incline will also work. Your heart will beat faster, and you’ll have to work harder since you’re moving upward. Don’t skip breakfast. -Cut back on alcohol as most of its calories end up becoming belly fat. Eat more often but in smaller portions. -To avoid swelling, you need to drastically cut down on salty foods since salt causes fluid retention in your body. Don’t sit without moving for more than 30 minutes, try to stand up and walk around frequently. -The effective remedy for a large stomach and upper back fat is… sleeping. Eat more food that is rich in fiber. This means adding beans, peas, lentils, broccoli, oatmeal, whole-wheat pasta, avocados and raspberries to your diet. Get our Fit Father 30-Day Fat Loss Program here → https://goo.gl/HpvxLV Subscribe to our channel here → https://goo.gl/wxghQ5 A question I see very often here at Fit Father Project HQ is, “Dr. Anthony, what is a healthy body fat percentage for men?” We're going to cover the science and quick tips in today's short video. Getting to the ideal body fat percentage for males requires hard work, dedication and a structured plan that you can work on with accountability. With today's advice, we'll make it as simple and sustainable as possible. AND... if you're looking for a step-by-step weight loss program to reach a healthy body fat percentage for you as a man, check out our FF30X Program here → https://www.fitfatherproject.com/ff30x-letter-video/ So, in this video and associated article, I’m diving into the charts, ranges and measuring techniques that will help you find out what body fat percentage you’re currently at and what your healthy body fat percentage is. First off, I want to clear up any confusion you might have about BMI and Body fat percentage. These two are often confused as measuring the same thing. Basically, BMI is a ratio figure between your height and weight. To get your BMI result using the metric system, you simply divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters, then divide the result by your height again. For example: a 73kg man who is 1.78m tall would do the below: 73 / 1.78 / 1.78 = 23.04 BMI Using pounds and inches, you can use the following formula: [weight (lb) / height (in) / height (in)] x 703 As you can see from the formulae above, there is nothing factored for age or amount of body fat. Therefore, a 73kg man could have 10% or 30% body fat and still fall in the exact same BMI range. In reality, they are both very different in terms of physical appearance and most likely physical health. Body fat percentage is exactly what it suggests. It’s the amount of body fat you have on your body. This is obviously completely exclusive to each person, so is a much better indicator than BMI. Low body fat will show more muscle definition so it will depend on what your goals are and help you reach an ideal body fat percentage for males. Your first step to lowering your body fat should definitely be to get your nutrition in order. To get you started, I have a 1-Day Meal Plan available completely free at → https://www.fitfatherproject.com/get-free-meal-plan/ An ideal body fat percentage for men that want to show muscle and appear lean will be around the 8-12% mark. Going below that can be difficult to maintain over the long term… but certainly isn’t impossible. When it comes to a healthy body fat percentage men often presume that getting into low single digits is the way to go. However, getting that low not only takes extreme dedication but also removes much-needed padding that protects your body. If you have any doubt, ask a bodybuilder how it is to walk close to a contest! Your next step to getting to a healthy body fat percentage for a man will be to incorporate high-intensity weight training and cardio, as a regular thing on your schedule. My recommendation would be to use my 24-Minute Workout that is completely free to download so you can get started today. Find it at → https://www.fitfatherproject.com/get-free-workout/ This workout combines strength training, cardio, and flexibility into one, using what is known as Metabolic Resistance Training. The best style of workout to shift body fat fast. Combine this with HIIT training or Tabata training, and you’ll be burning body fat in no time and getting to a healthy body fat percentage for men! Check out the video to see the charts that show a healthy body fat percentage for males and females alike. Also, check out the accompanying article here: https://www.fitfatherproject.com/best-ways-to-measure-body-fat-percentage/ This article will deep dive on the science of an ideal body fat percentage for men and also show how you can get your body fat measured to help your weight loss and fitness journey. In today’s video I’m going to take you all through my Bodyfat percentage after about 4 months of cutting. This is a follow up to the first scan video, and if you want to watch that you can click here, or the link in my description. If you’re new here, please do subscribe to my channel and if you like these updates, then give this video a like! My start weight for this cut was 152.8lbs after a long off-season from powerlifting and a slow bulk. I intentionally gained weight to put on muscle in the off season My first DEXA at the very beginning of my cut weighed me in at 152.8lbs with 22.7% body fat, and my most recent one, taken about 4 months after the first scan weighed me at 145.3lbs and 19.8% body fat. ----- How I did it ----- Before we get into the other measurements of the scan, I want to take a moment to describe what I did to lose the weight and body fat. Training: I trained 4 days a week in preparation for my upcoming powerlifting meet. I did not include any extra cardio, HIIT, etc. workouts. Since I’m getting closer to a meet, my overall powerlifting volume lowered as intensity increased during prep. Most of you watching might not be prepping for a powerlifting meet, so if you want a muscle building program, then I suggest to check out my program on Bodybuilding.com called UPLIFTED. I’ll leave a link for it below Nutrition: Since dropping some of my accessories or ‘bro stuff’ I did notice that my appetite decreased dramatically. To guide me through my cut I used the Renaissance Periodization diet template. I also used the same service for my bulk. I am sponsored by RP, so if you want to use the same nutrition guidelines I used, then check out the nutrition link below, and you can use my discount code for an additional $10 off. ----- What it means ----- Weight, Bodyfat, Lean Tissue Measurement Again, my overall weight loss total was 7.5lbs. 5.8lbs of that weight loss was body fat, and 1.7lbs of it was lean tissue. With any cut, you do have to expect that some lean tissue will be lost, but the goal will be of course to limit that as much as possible. Hydration levels can affect the amount of lean tissue read on the DEXA scan, and non-fat matter is read as lean tissue. My most recent scan, as opposed to my first scan was earlier in the day, so I’d like to assume that I was more hydrated on my first scan. For future scans, I’ll be sure to control hydration so that the tests are more controlled. So I get a more accurate and consistent scan. https://www.bodyspec.com/blog/post/will_drinking_water_affect_my_scan —— Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) I think newer lifters or people just beginning their fitness journey can benefit most from a scan like this by finding the Resting Metabolic Rate. RMR is the minimum number of estimated calories your body requires daily, at rest. You could estimate this number without a DEXA scan, but I do find it nice that Bodyspec includes this in our scan. My initial RMR was 1,469 calories a day, and is now 1,454 calories a day. It is only a 15 calorie difference, which is nice to see in the scan because I know that maintaining my current pace wouldn’t be a difficult lifestyle to lead. —— Bone Report This report gives an overview of bone strength. Powerlifters, and anyone in the habit of resistance training have stronger bones than the rest of the world. This is why I suggest resistance training to everyone, especially with Osteoporosis and bone density deficiencies being a problem with women, lifting can help limit risk of brittle bone disease. My Z-score is over a full point greater than 99% of the population. That has me happy about my own score but also thinking “THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE LIFTING” —— VAT -Visceral Fat Fat that is stored within the abdominal cavity and stored around important organs like the liver, pancreas and intensities. This type of fat is shown to play a distinctive and potentially dangerous role and higher amounts of fat are associated with increased risks of a number of health problems, including Type 2 Diabetes and breast cancer. The scored number VAT should be as low as possible, with a target of zero VAT. I’m happy to see this number go down, and some of the other reads motivate me for performance and vanity, this in particular does motivate me to continue on with my fitness and health journey. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Hi, I'm Meg. I make videos for my #strongstrongfriends. I'm an ISSA Certified Personal Trainer, USA Powerlifting Club Coach, and Nationally competitive powerlifter.

In this video I talk about why and how to diet to get to 6% 7% or 8% Body Fat and I compare Kinobody Macgregor Aldertons Dexa scan. 🔥FREE 6 Week Body Transformation Challenge: http://bit.ly/lose-fat192 Fat Loss Calculator: http://bit.ly/2CEFJN2 So you're trying to get down to 6 to 8 percent body fat. And in today's video I want to focus on exactly how you should eat to hit the lowest body fat percentage possible. Throughout the last 10 years my body fat percentage has consistently remained low, and at certain points really low through the methods I'm about to share with you today. First I want to solidify in your head that when we're aiming to reduce body fat, the main way to do it is through diet. Weight training is still very important throughout a cut for you to maintain muscle mass and keep your metabolism elevated while burning fat. However for your body to actually use stored body fat working out takes a backseat to diet. Now before I give you the exact way that you should be eating let's first quickly talk about what 6 to 8% body fat looks like and what it actually means. There are a bunch of different ways to test out your body fat percentage but one of the most recognized and most accurate ways is through a dexa scan. There are a bunch of people that have already posted YouTube videos in which they get their dexa scan results and i want to provide a side-by-side comparison so you can see how body fat percentages are one inaccurate even on a dexa scan and 2 they're kind of irrelevant. You'll see what I mean in this comparison. Im going to compare Conor McGregor a ufc fighter to Greg Gallagher a popular intermittent fasting advocate to Jamie alderton whos a natural bodybuilder. All these guys got their dexa scan results and McGregor came up at 7 %. Gallagher came up at 8.1% and Jamie Alderton came up at 10.8%. If I were to line up these guys pictures I would assume that a competitive bodybuilder like Jamie alderton would have the lowest body fat percentage. And I would also assume that Conor McGregor would have the highest body fat percentage. These are just three examples but there are tons of these examples in which even the more accurate dexa scan doesn't seem very accurate at all. On top of that many people are under the impression that the lower the body fat percentage the more ripped and jacked you look. However part of looking "shredded" is about how much muscle mass you have on your body and how you hold your overall body fat. There are people that truly are 7% yet they look worse than someone that's 12% just because of the way that the fat is distributed across their body and how their muscles look. With all that said I'm imagining that you're probably not going to get a dexa scan. To track your body fat percentage you're probably going to be using either calipers or a bioelectrical impedance analysis both of which are considered far less accurate then a dexa scan. Even though any one of these tests can be used and progress can be measured as long as you stick to the same testing method they are inaccurate. One thing you don't want to do is you dont want to track via bioelectrical impedance and then a month later use the calipers. You gotta stick to one test. But even though they can be used as a comparison to measure progress the actual number that you get as your result doesn't really mean all that much in relation to Aesthetics. There are so many marketing campaigns aimed at convincing guys that unless their body fat percentage is in the low single-digits they have to buy a certain product to get there. However something that you should know is that being at a low body fat percentage 4 a competition and maintaining it on a daily basis are two completely different things. Our bodies need a certain percentage of fat in order to be able to function: Women need about 13 percent body fat and men about 3 percent. This is considered your essential body fat that you need to survive. In addition to essential body fat, a body also needs stored fat. With stored fat taken into account, when overall body fat levels drops lower than 14 percent for women and 8 percent for men, health risks increase, including everything from reproductive dysfunction to dehydration, starvation, loss of muscle tissue, premature osteoporosis, and organ and nerve damage. So first of all you should ask yourself why you want to be at such a low body fat percentage to begin with? And the second thing you should do is recognize that maintaining such a low body fat percentage on a day-to-day basis is unrealistic overrated unhealthy and completely unnecessary. 🔥FREE 6 Week Body Transformation Challenge: http://bit.ly/lose-fat192

Compare your body fat percentage with this chart... http://athleanx.com/x/bodyfatcomparison One of the biggest mistakes you can make when gauging your body fat percentage progress on a workout program is to rely on a scale. A scale is only going to tell you how much you weigh and will not give you any information on whether you are losing fat or gaining muscle. In order to know just how much body fat you are dropping you need to have a reliable way to measure this...and unfortunately, most of the options are not that consistent or reliable. That said, if you could have access to a few methods for testing your own body fat levels in the convenience of your own home, you might be able to see where you are a bit more frequently. Even if the accuracy wasn't spot on, you would still be able to monitor the week to week fluctuations in the body fat percentages that you are seeing and would know the direction you are moving in. In this video, I cover four of the most common methods for testing body fat percentages at home. I tell you the flaws and the positives with each method. From online body fat calculators to bioelectrical impedance scales to skinfold caliper testing to the old fashioned mirror...each method is reviewed and actual body fat testing results are revealed. Also, be sure to watch how important knowing your body fat levels are when determining your fitness. You'll see how two people can weigh exactly the same and look drastically different. Hint...it all has to do with lean body mass! For more videos on fat burning workouts and muscle gaining exercises to help you change your body fat levels and see noticeable changes each time you do measure your percentages, be sure to check out our youtube channel at http://youtube.com/user/jdcav24 For a body fat percentage comparison chart, be sure to click on the link at the top of the description. You'll be able to see where you are currently, and where you want to get to in the next 90 days and beyond.

Watch more Weight Loss Tips videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/422965-How-to-Calculate-Your-Body-Fat-Percentage Your body fat percentage helps you determine your diet and exercise needs. The number gives you an idea of how much of your body is composed of fat, muscles, and tissue. Step 1: Know the ranges for women Know the body fat ranges to aim for if you're a woman. 10 percent body fat is the absolute minimum; athletes tend to be in the 14 to 20 percent range. Fit people are at 21 to 24 percent. 25 to 31 percent is acceptable, and 32 percent and higher is too much. Step 2: Know the ranges for men Know the body fat ranges to shoot for if you're a man. For men, 2 to 4 percent is essential, athletes are 6 to 13 percent, fit men are 14 to 17 percent, and 18 to 25 percent is considered acceptable. 26 percent or more is considered excessive. Step 3: Avoid water and exercise Prepare for taking your measurements. Don't drinking too much water or exercise 2 hours before taking measurements as this can skew the body fat percentage scores. Step 4: Locate measurement sites Locate the sites for skin-fold measurements. For men, the sites are diagonally on the chest, and vertically on the abdominals and thighs. For women, the sites are vertically on the triceps and thighs, and diagonally on the suprailiac, which is midway between the hip joint and the rib cage. Step 5: Use a caliper Use a caliper to take skin-fold measurements. Pinch and pull a fold of skin using your index finger and thumb. Use the caliper to take a measurement one centimeter away. Wait a few seconds for the fat to compress. Take the measurements from your right side, and take two from each site. Tip Have a trained professional take skin-fold measurements to get the most accurate numbers. Step 6: Calculate your body density Add your skin-fold measurements, and enter the sum into the body density equation to calculate your body density. For women, the equation is .0000023 times the sum squared, minus your age multiplied by .0001392, minus .0009929 multiplied by the sum, plus 1.0994921. For men, the numbers are .0000016, .0002574, .0008267, and 1.1093800. Step 7: Determine body fat percentage Determine your body fat percentage by dividing 495 by your body density and subtracting 450. Tip To avoid number crunching, use an online calculator to determine your body density and fat percentage based on your skin-fold measurements. Step 8: Take a bioelectrical impedance analysis Take a bioelectrical impedance analysis using a fat-percentage scale if you want to bypass the math. The scale sends a low-voltage electrical current through your body to measure your fat percentage. Electricity goes faster through fat-free mass like muscles. Step 9: Understand the error rate Understand that the error rate for these methods can be as high as 8 percent, but your body fat percentage range will give you a good idea of your body makeup and what goals you should aim for. Now you know your body-fat percentage, and can set accurate goals. Did You Know? According to the Centers for Disease Control, Mississippi had the highest obesity rate in 2009 at 34.4 percent.

A lot of people get way too hung up on this, and it's really just not necessary. Having an approximate idea of where your body fat levels are at is useful because it will help you to properly regulate your bulking and cutting cycles, but if you're an average trainee who just wants to build muscle, lose fat and just look good in general (and you're not competing or trying to lean down to a fully "ripped body" by a certain date), trying to figure out whether you're 8% body fat versus 10% body fat or 12% body fat versus 14% body fat is just not something you should be worrying about. The first and most important reason for this is the simple fact that there's just no way to measure body fat percentage with 100% accuracy in the first place. Unless you were to physically cut your body into pieces and measure exactly how much fat you were carrying, all methods of measuring body fat (such as body fat calipers, bod pod, body fat scales or DEXA scans) have certain flaws and they'll always have a margin for error. Even a DEXA scan which is generally considered as the "gold standard" for measuring body fat can still be off by several percent, so even with DEXA you're not guaranteed to be getting an exact figure. Secondly, if you're trying to figure out your body fat percentage, then chances are you're doing it because you simply want your physique to look a certain way. In that case, what matters is not what percentage you see listed on a piece of paper, but what matters is how you actually look, and different people can look very different even if they're at the same body fat percentage. 12% body fat isn't going to produce the same visual look across the board for every person because it depends on several factors, such as how much muscle you're carrying (the more muscle you've built the leaner you'll look even at a higher body fat) as well as body fat distribution which is mostly a product of genetics. So again, it really just comes down to looking in the mirror or looking at progress photos and deciding what level of leanness you want to achieve. If a DEXA scan tells you that you're 15% but your abs are visible and you're happy with how you look, then it wouldn't make any sense to lose fat and lean down further just because you saw that you're favorite YouTuber is apparently 10% or because 15% "sounds higher" than you'd like. The other point I'd make on this is to keep in mind that most people way under estimate their body fat percentage for the most part. I see guys all the time posting pictures saying they're 8% body fat, when in reality they're probably at least 12%. Or guys who say they're 14% and are literally probably more like 20%. So I would strongly recommend that you don't start comparing yourself to what you read in the comments section on YouTube fitness videos or on Facebook or Instagram because most people who claim to be a certain body fat level are actually a lot higher than they think. Another thing that can be tricky with measuring body fat as well is how different your physique can look based on the lighting you're under. If you take a flexed picture under really good lighting that really brings out your muscle definition versus standing under crappy lighting that just washes out your physique, it can literally look like a before and after transformation. So lighting plays a big role in how lean you look in the mirror or in pictures and that can make it tough to estimate your body fat percentage as well. Bottom line: if you're an average trainee trying to build a lean and muscular body, having a rough idea of your body fat percentage can be useful, but there's no need to get hung up on the precise number. There's no way to know it in the first place, and at the end of the day it just comes down to how you look anyway. P.S. Sign up for my free tools and newsletter at http://www.FatlossLifestyle.com The only thing that can come from only using the scale to see if your exercise program is working is "Bad News". If you really want to know if your program is working for you you need more tools. You see; our body is made up of about 60% water. A 150 lb. person has about 100 lbs. of water. That water goes in and out of cells, muscle, organs depending on many factores. For women a certain time of the month, for higher intake of sodium, for intake of different types of carbs, etc. My point is that your bodyweight fluctates for so many reasons that we can't figure it out. Three ways that are better than just using the scale to see if your fitness program is working is: #1 The way your clothes fit If your pants are more lose around the waist and you have more room in your clothes than more than likely are losing fat. #2 To use a clothe tape and a scale. The waist line measurement and the scale give you a lot better feedback. If the scale stays the same and the waist measurement goes down, then you are losing fat and gaining muscle. If the scale stays the same and the waist measurement goes up then you are gaining fat. #3 One site skin fold caliper kit. They are very easy to use and very affordable. Just google search for them. The feedback is much more precise than the other methods above. The three #'s that are important to monitor are; 1. Overall bodyfat % 2. Fat weight 3. Lean Body Mass These kit are very easy to use and within one minute you will know if you are losing, gaining, or maintaining muscle and fat. Using one or all three of these techniques you will be able to find out what works and what does not work at gaining muscle and losing fat. If you have been following me for any length of time you know that I believe that one of the most important factors in transforming your body and life is "muscle confusion". Simply put; you can't do the same exercises the same way all the time. You must give your muscles something new and different.
