Relying on the scale is simply not an accurate way to gauge progress since lifting weights is likely going to cause you to gain weight while you may be dramatically lowering your body fat percentage. A scale could make you think you are off track on your way to your lean goals. Instead, mastering your measuring abilities of your own body fat will help you to determine your true progress. In this video, I show you how to measure your body fat yourself in your own home to figure out how close you are to your six pack abs. One method is more expensive than the other, however when you realize just how important this number will be to your progress, you may just find a way to add this tool to your gym equipment. First, skin fold calipers are a classic home testing option. Are they the most accurate? No. However, they are the most readily available and don’t require the set up that a DEXA scan would. The tradeoff in accuracy is not that high, given that as you become more skilled in pinching…your accuracy could be within 1-3% of the exact number. If you would rather use a more economical method for testing your body fat level at home however, you can easily do that as well. When you realize just what calipers are testing it becomes very easy to see how you can do this with a simple fifty cent tape measure. Calipers are literally measuring the thickness of the skin fold that you pinch when doing your body fat measurements. If you can (easier when you enlist the help of someone else) simply pinch in the locations shown in this video and use a standard tape measure to mark out the thickness of the fold. Average out the results performed on your chest, abdomen and thigh and determine your body fat with this chart: Ellington Darden: 1/4 inch pinch is 5 to 8 percent body fat 1/2 inch pinch is 9 to 13 percent body fat 3/4 inch pinch is 14 to 18 percent body fat 1 inch pinch is 19 to 22 percent body fat 1 1/2 inch pinch is 23 to 27 percent body fat 2 inch pinch is 28 to 32 percent body fat 2 1/2 inch pinch is 33 percent body fat and up Alternatively, if you get your skin fold measurements either with a caliper or with the old fashioned tape measure method you can input them at https://www.escablo.com/en/app/Body-Fat-Percentage-Calculator to determine your current level of body fat. Body fat percentage can be calculated at home! All you need is a measuring tape if you're a lady and a measuring tape and a scale if your'e a guy and a calculator and you'll be good to go. Body fat percentage is a more accurate tool for assessing your health than your BMI which we discussed in last week's video. You don't need to go to the gym and have a trainer use calipers or another device to find your body fat percentage either! The method used in this week's video is just as accurate as either method. Some people also use Bod Pod, Hydrostatic Weighing, and DEXA but they are not common, so we'll not discuss them here. Although as a side note, if it's convenient for you to get a DEXA scan, I recommend you do it. DEXA scans your entire body with X-rays and tells you very precisely how much fat you have. Then all the rest of your life you'll have that DEXA scan as a reference point for your current body fat level. Hydration status can also mess up with the readings of BIA. You could get very different body fat percentage readings in the same day just because of your hydrations status. So in conclusion BIA is not reliable, I don't recommend you use it. Skin Fold Calipers can be pretty accurate actually depending on the brand and if you use them correctly. There are brands that have you measure up to 6 points on your body and others only one place. They usually give different results. But I think the biggest problem with these calipers is that most people don't know how to use them. You have to grab just the right amount of skin every time - not too much and not too little, and always do it in the same places. Again I think this can be learned with a bit of practice and you can get a result that's within 1 percent of your real body fat percentage. Here's the interesting thing about your waist measurement: it goes up and down with your body fat percentage. For most people, not everybody but for most people, each body fat percentage has a certain corresponding waist measurement. At 6 feet tall, 190lbs ripped is a very advanced level of muscle development. But this person has only been training for 6 months so there's no way that they're close to their genetic potential. This tells me right of the bat that they probably need to lose about 20lbs of fat to get to around 10%. I can almost guarantee it.

First off, I want to clear up any confusion you might have about BMI and Body fat percentage. These two are often confused as measuring the same thing. Basically, BMI is a ratio figure between your height and weight. To get your BMI result using the metric system, you simply divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters, then divide the result by your height again. For example: a 73kg man who is 1.78m tall would do the below: 73 / 1.78 / 1.78 = 23.04 BMI Using pounds and inches, you can use the following formula: [weight (lb) / height (in) / height (in)] x 703 As you can see from the formulae above, there is nothing factored for age or amount of body fat. Therefore, a 73kg man could have 10% or 30% body fat and still fall in the exact same BMI range. In reality, they are both very different in terms of physical appearance and most likely physical health. Body fat percentage is exactly what it suggests. It’s the amount of body fat you have on your body. This is obviously completely exclusive to each person, so is a much better indicator than BMI. Low body fat will show more muscle definition so it will depend on what your goals are and help you reach an ideal body fat percentage for males. Your first step to lowering your body fat should definitely be to get your nutrition in order. A scale is only going to tell you how much you weigh and will not give you any information on whether you are losing fat or gaining muscle. In order to know just how much body fat you are dropping you need to have a reliable way to measure this...and unfortunately, most of the options are not that consistent or reliable. That said, if you could have access to a few methods for testing your own body fat levels in the convenience of your own home, you might be able to see where you are a bit more frequently. Even if the accuracy wasn't spot on, you would still be able to monitor the week to week fluctuations in the body fat percentages that you are seeing and would know the direction you are moving in. I'm going to go over exactly what you'll need to get this job done in a way that'll produce reliable results at home fast. Of course there are options like hydrostatic weighing and dexa scans however for this video I'm just going to assume that you're not even going to bother with these methods because they're expensive hard to find and they take a lot of time. Realistically we want to stick to the options that are simple and we want to find a way to have accurate results without breaking the bank. So the first way we can do this is by using a method that can be done in our own homes using materials available to us right now and that's through circumference measurements. All you need is a measuring tape. If you're a man between the ages of 18 - 26 years old you're going to measure three spots: the circumference of your right forearm right below the elbow, your and right at your belly button, and your upper right arm a little below your shoulder. If your a 27 year old man or older the only difference is instead of measuring your upper right arm you're going to measure your hips. For women if you're 18 to 26 years old you're going to measure your abs at your belly button, your right thigh right below your glute, and you're right forearm. And if you're over 27 years old you're going to measure you're right calf right below the knee instead of your right forearm. Then you just plug in your stats into a calculator that I'll link up below. Next up is the bioelectrical impedance device and in my opinion this is one of the easiest ways to track your body fat. These are the devices that you see that look like video game controllers and the scales that come with metal strips on them. And the way they work is they send a small electric pulse through your body which travels faster through muscle than it does through fat and depending on how fast it travels through your body and returns back to the machine, the device calculates your body fat percentage. Some things you want to be aware of to get an accurate reading are one, make sure that you have full contact with the metal parts of the device. So make sure you're feet or your hands are in contact with the metal parts of your device as much as possible. If using a handheld device don't squeeze the life out of it just hold it with a regular grip. Make sure you hold your hands straight out in front of you and lockout your elbows. And then just hold still while it takes your body fat percentage. Next we have the skinfold calipers. This device can take your body fat percentage a couple different ways. The simplest way is to take one measurement a couple inches above your hip bone. However if you want a more accurate result I recommend taking three measurements. If you're a man you're going to measure at your chest, your abs, and your thigh. For the chest measurement you want a diagonal skinfold right between your nipple line and your armpit. For the abs we want to be one to two inches to the right of the belly button. And for the thigh we want to take it at the midpoint between your hip and your knee. For women we want to do the tricep at the midpoint right between the shoulder and the elbow. The supreallyac located about two inches above the hip bone and the same thigh measurement as for men. And then you plug your measurements into a chart which I'll include links to in the description. There are also some really cheap options for skinfold measurement devices on Amazon which makes this an inexpensive yet accurate way to take your body fat. The downside is that this one is obviously more time consuming then just doing bioelectrical impedance. Next we have online calculators that say they can do it based on your weight your height your age and your activity level. These calculators make no logical sense for how they actually figure out your body fat. So I would stay away from them. Last buy not least is what I call the mirror method. And in today's video I want to focus on exactly how you should eat to hit the lowest body fat percentage possible. Throughout the last 10 years my body fat percentage has consistently remained low, and at certain points really low through the methods I'm about to share with you today. First I want to solidify in your head that when we're aiming to reduce body fat, the main way to do it is through diet. Weight training is still very important throughout a cut for you to maintain muscle mass and keep your metabolism elevated while burning fat. However for your body to actually use stored body fat working out takes a backseat to diet. Now before I give you the exact way that you should be eating let's first quickly talk about what 6 to 8% body fat looks like and what it actually means. There are a bunch of different ways to test out your body fat percentage but one of the most recognized and most accurate ways is through a dexa scan. There are a bunch of people that have already posted YouTube videos in which they get their dexa scan results and i want to provide a side-by-side comparison so you can see how body fat percentages are one inaccurate even on a dexa scan and 2 they're kind of irrelevant. You'll see what I mean in this comparison. Im going to compare Conor McGregor a ufc fighter to Greg Gallagher a popular intermittent fasting advocate to Jamie alderton whos a natural bodybuilder. All these guys got their dexa scan results and McGregor came up at 7 %. Gallagher came up at 8.1% and Jamie Alderton came up at 10.8%. If I were to line up these guys pictures I would assume that a competitive bodybuilder like Jamie alderton would have the lowest body fat percentage. And I would also assume that Conor McGregor would have the highest body fat percentage. These are just three examples but there are tons of these examples in which even the more accurate dexa scan doesn't seem very accurate at all. On top of that many people are under the impression that the lower the body fat percentage the more ripped and jacked you look. However part of looking "shredded" is about how much muscle mass you have on your body and how you hold your overall body fat. There are people that truly are 7% yet they look worse than someone that's 12% just because of the way that the fat is distributed across their body and how their muscles look. With all that said I'm imagining that you're probably not going to get a dexa scan. To track your body fat percentage you're probably going to be using either calipers or a bioelectrical impedance analysis both of which are considered far less accurate then a dexa scan. Even though any one of these tests can be used and progress can be measured as long as you stick to the same testing method they are inaccurate. One thing you don't want to do is you dont want to track via bioelectrical impedance and then a month later use the calipers. You gotta stick to one test. But even though they can be used as a comparison to measure progress the actual number that you get as your result doesn't really mean all that much in relation to Aesthetics. There are so many marketing campaigns aimed at convincing guys that unless their body fat percentage is in the low single-digits they have to buy a certain product to get there. However something that you should know is that being at a low body fat percentage 4 a competition and maintaining it on a daily basis are two completely different things. Our bodies need a certain percentage of fat in order to be able to function: Women need about 13 percent body fat and men about 3 percent. This is considered your essential body fat that you need to survive. In addition to essential body fat, a body also needs stored fat. With stored fat taken into account, when overall body fat levels drops lower than 14 percent for women and 8 percent for men, health risks increase, including everything from reproductive dysfunction to dehydration, starvation, loss of muscle tissue, premature osteoporosis, and organ and nerve damage. So first of all you should ask yourself why you want to be at such a low body fat percentage to begin with? And the second thing you should do is recognize that maintaining such a low body fat percentage on a day-to-day basis is unrealistic overrated unhealthy and completely unnecessary.

The number gives you an idea of how much of your body is composed of fat, muscles, and tissue. Step 1: Know the ranges for women Know the body fat ranges to aim for if you're a woman. 10 percent body fat is the absolute minimum; athletes tend to be in the 14 to 20 percent range. Fit people are at 21 to 24 percent. 25 to 31 percent is acceptable, and 32 percent and higher is too much. Step 2: Know the ranges for men Know the body fat ranges to shoot for if you're a man. For men, 2 to 4 percent is essential, athletes are 6 to 13 percent, fit men are 14 to 17 percent, and 18 to 25 percent is considered acceptable. 26 percent or more is considered excessive. Step 3: Avoid water and exercise Prepare for taking your measurements. Don't drinking too much water or exercise 2 hours before taking measurements as this can skew the body fat percentage scores. Step 4: Locate measurement sites Locate the sites for skin-fold measurements. For men, the sites are diagonally on the chest, and vertically on the abdominals and thighs. For women, the sites are vertically on the triceps and thighs, and diagonally on the suprailiac, which is midway between the hip joint and the rib cage. Step 5: Use a caliper Use a caliper to take skin-fold measurements. Pinch and pull a fold of skin using your index finger and thumb. Use the caliper to take a measurement one centimeter away. Wait a few seconds for the fat to compress. Take the measurements from your right side, and take two from each site. Tip Have a trained professional take skin-fold measurements to get the most accurate numbers. Step 6: Calculate your body density Add your skin-fold measurements, and enter the sum into the body density equation to calculate your body density. For women, the equation is .0000023 times the sum squared, minus your age multiplied by .0001392, minus .0009929 multiplied by the sum, plus 1.0994921. For men, the numbers are .0000016, .0002574, .0008267, and 1.1093800. Step 7: Determine body fat percentage Determine your body fat percentage by dividing 495 by your body density and subtracting 450. Tip To avoid number crunching, use an online calculator to determine your body density and fat percentage based on your skin-fold measurements. Step 8: Take a bioelectrical impedance analysis Take a bioelectrical impedance analysis using a fat-percentage scale if you want to bypass the math. The scale sends a low-voltage electrical current through your body to measure your fat percentage. Electricity goes faster through fat-free mass like muscles. Step 9: Understand the error rate Understand that the error rate for these methods can be as high as 8 percent, but your body fat percentage range will give you a good idea of your body makeup and what goals you should aim for. How lean can you get naturally without side effects? There will always be rare genetic outliers who can get away with maintaining really low body fat levels and a fully ripped body all the time, but for the vast majority of guys out there, I would say that anywhere from about 10% body fat as a minimum up to about 14-15% body fat is the "sweet spot". As long as you have some decent muscle development to go along with it, this body fat range will give you an impressively lean body, and at the same time, your mental and physical performance will be at its peak, and you'll be able to comfortably maintain it on a year round basis without the typical "cutting side effects". Unfortunately a lot guys who regularly follow popular fitness youtubers and social media figures in the online fitness community have really been misled over the years on the whole body fat percentage issue and they think that 6% body fat or 8% body fat is somehow a "standard" level of leanness that everyone should aim for. The reality is that a true 10% body fat measured on a DEXA scan is actually very lean (most other methods that measure body fat percentage are highly inaccurate), and most guys are not going to be able to drop lower than that without experiencing low body fat side effects, not to mention that even up to 20% is still considered to be a healthy body fat percentage for men. The human body needs a certain amount of body fat for optimal functioning and there's really nothing healthy about having striated glutes or perfectly ripped lower abs, and the idea that this represents what "fitness" is is actually a really dangerous message that can mess with people's self image and even lead to things like eating disorders and other unhealthy behaviours. If you try to go lower than about 10% body fat as a natural trainee and stay there over a prolonged period, in most cases you're going to end up excessively hungry, physically drained, mentally fatigued, anxious/irritable and with reduced motivation and sex drive just to name a few things. Some of you might find this message a bit discouraging, but the good news here is that most people way under estimate when they guess their own body fat percentage or someone else's, and the reality is that a true 12% body fat is actually quite lean. That's also why I consider 10% to be the minimum as a year round state in most cases, and quite honestly a pretty good percentage of guys won't even be able to maintain that. I'd say if you want to be functioning at your peak physically and mentally, then 12% is probably more realistic as a permanent body fat percentage. Bottom line,: if you're doing a cutting phase and going down to a very low body fat temporarily for a certain event that's fine, but in terms of a healthy, permanent, year round body fat percentage that is still lean and aesthetic looking, for most guys, 10% would be the absolute minimum... 12% would be a very good balance in my opinion... but even up to 14 or 15% will still look pretty good as long as you have some decent muscle mass to go along with it. People want to know if burpees are the best exercise for getting the job done. Others want to know if battle ropes or even jump rope are better at burning calories and burning fat. While all of them are at the top of the list for the most calories burned on a minute per minute basis, they still are not the best way to lose five pounds of body fat the fastest. In this video, I show you how you can never outtrain a bad diet. If you refuse to pay attention to the quality of your nutrition and the foods you put in your mouth you are never going to have the low levels of body fat that you desire long term. Sure, anyone can follow a short term diet that allows them to lose fat for a few weeks however if you can’t keep it up then you will never be satisfied with your body fat levels over the course of the year. Mistakenly, people look to exercises as the best way to drop body fat. While you definitely need to train, achieving fat loss is and always will be better accomplished via the right nutrition plan. This goes back to the comment about never being able to outtrain a bad diet. You simply cannot make up enough calorie burn via exercise (even the most intense) to overcome bad food choices. For instance, our very own Jesse is a big sugar fanatic and a worshiper of gummy bears. Just 17 measly gummy bears has 150 calories. Even if Jesse were to do 10 minutes straight of high effort high intensity burpees, he would only burn 120 calories and he would lose that battle with a net calorie gain of 30. Now Jesse, being a hardgainer, is not concerned at the moment with his body fat levels. He was the only one wiling to do the burpees while I talked during the video being the good sport that he is. If you are looking to burn 5 lbs of fat however, you need to be sure that you are paying attention to what really matters. Your nutrition will always be at the top of the priority list for getting that job done. Now, does that mean that conditioning exercises like burpees, jump rope, battle ropes and split squat jumps don’t have a place in your workout program if you need to lose fat? Not at all. In fact, with a good nutrition approach in place these exercises become even more effective since they compliment the losses that you are already making because of your improved diet. Not just that, each of these exercises helps to improve your stamina, work capacity, endurance, power endurance and your heart.
