CALORIMETRY: Calorimetry is one of the method for the determination of specific heat or latent heat of substance, the method used is method of mixtures.According to the principle of calorimetery,When a body at higher temperature is brought in contact with another body at lower temperature, the heat lost by the hot body is equal to the heat gain by the colder body, provided no heat is allowed to escape to the surroundings. Heat lost by the hot body = Heat gain by the cold body.This is known as principle of method of mixtures.CALORIMETER:-The device in which heat measurement can be made by utilising the principle of calorimetry is called a calorimeter.1.Calorimeter consists of cylindrical metallic vessel and stirrer of same material like copper or aluminium.2.The vessel is kept inside a wooden box, its outer surfaces are polished to prevent loss of heat due to radiation.3.The space between the calorimeter and wooden box is filled with non-conducting material like glass or wool to prevent heat loss due to conduction.4.Calorimeter is closed with a non-conducting lid to minimize the loss of heat due to convection.5. The stirrer and thermometer are inserted through a hole provided at the centre of a lid.EXPERIMENT: DETERMINATION OF SPECIFIC HEAT OF SOLID:PROCEDURE:-1.An empty and dry calorimeter with stirrer is cleaned and its mass is determined by using common balance.2.Water is filled in the calorimeter up to one-third of its volume and its mass is again determined.3.The calometer is placed in wooden box and temperature of water is noted as t1 degree centigrade using thermometer.4.Now the solid material whose specific heat is to be measured, taken in the form of small pieces is kept is a steam beater and then it is heated.5.The solid pieces are heated to a temperature t2 degree centigrade in steam heater.6.Now the solid pieces were quickly transferred into the calorimeter.7.The contents in the calorimeter are stirrer well and the resultant temperature of mixture T3 degree centigrade is noted.8.Finally, the mass of calorimeter along with water and solid pieces is determined. You might have noticed that if you are trying to boil a lot of water it takes longer than if you only wish to boil a small amount of water. This is all because of something called ‘heat capacity’. Keep watching to learn more. Before we get into the details, it is important to realise that there is a difference between ‘heat’ and ‘temperature’. Temperature is a way of describing how hot or cold an object is and is measured in °C Whereas heat is a form of energy and is measured in Joules (J). The more heat energy transferred to an object, the more its temperature will rise. So heat and temperature are related but are not the same. So what is heat capacity? The heat capacity of a substance is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a material by 1oC. However, what’s more useful for us to think about is the specific heat capacity of a substance. This is, as it says in the name, a little more specific. It is the amount of heat required to raise 1 kilogram of a material by 1°C. Different materials have different known specific heat capacities, but we aren't always given a table like this so, we need to know how to calculate specific heat capacities ourselves. We have this equation, which can be written as symbols like this. The energy transferred is the heat energy absorbed or released. This equation can also be rearranged. To work out, the temperature change, subtract the old temperature from a new temperature. Let's have a look at the problem. Pause the video and attempt to calculate the specific heat capacity of lead. How did you get on?the energy transferred is this. The mass is this and the temperature change 10 degrees Celsius because it's this, take away this.Using the rearranged equations substitute in the values and we get a hundred and twenty-eight joules per kilogram Celsius. here is another practice problem, pause the video and attempt to calculate the energy transferred to the LED. did you get it right? We could divide it by 1000 to turn the answer into kilojoules. Notice that the answer is negative this time, it's because we called the LED the temperature change will always be negative if it is being cooled and positive is it being heated. So there you have it. To summarise, specific heat capacity is the amount of energy needed to raise one kilogram of a substance by one degree Celsius.It's helpful because it allows us to work out how much energy we need to heat up or cool down the substance to decide the temperature. This will be absorbed by water in a calorimeter, so we will then calculate how much energy the water absorbed, using an equation for heat energy, specific heat, mass, and change in temperature (delta temperature). We will also calculate the Calories per gram and Calories per serving, and then calculate percent error to find out how far off out experimental numbers were from the real values.
