Learn how to determine the end behavior of the graph of a polynomial function. To do this we will first need to make sure we have the polynomial in standard form with descending powers. We will then identify the leading terms so that we can identify the leading coefficient and degree of the polynomial. The end behavior of a polynomial depends on the leading coefficient (the coefficient of the term with the greatest power) and the degree (the exponent of the term with the greatest power) of the polynomial. If the degree is even and the leading coefficient is positive, the graph of the polynomial rises left and rises right. If the degee is even and the leading coefficient is negative, the graph of the polynomial falls left and falls right. If the degee is odd and the leading coefficient is positive, the graph of the polynomial falls left and rises right. The tools we will use to help us graph are end behavior, finding the zeros by factoring synthetic division as well as identify the multiplicity of each zero. The end behavior of the polynomial can be determined by looking at the degree and leading coefficient. Graphing using derivatives to find the turning points of this cubic equation correct to 2 decimal places, y = 2x^3 – 5x^2 – x – 6 The meaning of a turning point on a curve The video explains the difference between positive, negative and zero gradients, and that the gradient of a curve at a point is the gradient of the tangent at that point, which illustrates that the turning point on the cubic can be represented by a horizontal tangent, that is when the gradient is zero. Differentiating a cubic equation. Differentiating the cubic equation gives the derivative which gives the rate of change of the function at a point; the rate of change is the gradient of the tangent at that point. A formula for the differentiation of each term of a polynomial, in this case a cubic equation, is given. The video shows how each term of the cubic equation given is differentiated. The derivative of the cubic equation is a quadratic, the turning point is when the derivative is equal to nought. Solving a quadratic The quadratic (derivative) will not factorise to give integer solutions, a fact substantiated by the problem asking for the solutions to be given to 2 decimal places, so the quadratic formula is used. The derivative is compared with the general quadratic equation ax^2 + bx + c to obtain the values a, b and c, which are then substituted into the quadratic formula. x=(-b±√(b^2-4ac))/2a The video shows both the substitution and the ordered steps in the solution to give the x-co-ordinates of the turning points. Substituting values in the cubic equation to find the y co-ordinates of the turning points. The values of x are substituted into the cubic equation; the video uses nested brackets to ensure the correct order of operations. It can be evaluated by inputting into a calculator as shown or each term calculated separately and added at the end; whilst still working to 3 decimal places to avoid incurring any rounding errors. Obtaining the turning points of the cubic equation Finally, the turning points are rounded to 2 decimal places. Graph of the cubic equation The video ends with a graph of the cubic equation drawn using a spreadsheet.
