We went to North Carolina and visited Elijah Mountain Gem Mine. We picked up their largest gem bucket (15 gallon) to take home called the "Big Honkin Tub" I show you what it is like to go through the bag, the final yield, and a brief walk through of the "mine" itself. HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. -- Young miners had the change to find things from garnets to crystals to hematite at Elijah Mountain in Hendersonville. These young miners had to the chance to watch water flow through a flume. Once they found a gem, they used a chart to identify each one. The campers go to take home their treasures to share with their family. "Because it looks nice and pretty," 7-year-old Camper Nyla said. The highlight of the trip for the children is when Mr. Joe cracks a geode to show the campers what it looks like inside. Elijah Mountain is open year-round.

For my subscribers - THIS video has absolutely nothing to do with papercrafts - but rather my first love: gemstones. Many a lapidarist (one who cuts/polishes/schooled in minerals) will poo poo the rough you can bring home with you from Gem Mountain. As a hobbyist and a lapidarist I can see both sides. In Part 1 we look at what you can realistically expect from your visit - only as far as "take home". Part II, which will post in about a month, I'll look at value relative to other sources, "the rub" and making the most out of your pick of stones (cutting coupon included in the larger buckets from Gem Mountain) and a few of the gemstones I've faceted from the initial 'bucket'. Regardless, if you have young'ins with you - I think a great experience....
