Fushun, China Welcome Video (Subtitles Available)

10:28
Population: Fushun has 2.14 million inhabitants, including 1.34 million in the urban area. It is now part of the Shenyang-Fushun built-up area (comprising all the urban and suburban districts of Shenyang and Fushun) which was home to 6,756,379 inhabitants in 2010. This makes Shenyang-Fushun the 8th most populous built-up area in China Economy: Fushun is a highly industrialized area and originally called the City of Coal. It has developed as a thriving center for fuel, power and raw materials and is also offering more and more opportunities in textiles and electronics. The world's largest open-pit coal mine, the West Open Mine, is located south of the city. Exploited from the 12th century, it was operated as an open pit mine during the 20th and early 21st Century; however, as of 2015, the West Open pit, 1,000 feet deep, with an area of 4.2 square miles, was exhausted and unstable. Total coal production in Fushun as a whole had fallen below 3 million tons, down from 18.3 million tons in 1962. Fushun has a major aluminum-reduction plant and factories producing automobiles, machinery, chemicals, cement, and rubber. New direction economy of Fushun is focusing on a shift to national industrial development policy strategy and concept of revitalization, transformation, and green development. The coal mine, while still in use, is also undergoing "Greening" and transformation and re-development, in part by planting and re-foresting exhausted & un-used portions of the pit and pit walls. Resources: Fushun is rich in wood, coal, oil shale, iron, copper, aluminum, magnesium, gold, marble, titanium, and marl resources. Fushun is known as "the capital of coal". The main coal and oil shale company is Fushun Mining Group, which produced about 6 million tons of coal in 2001, mainly blending coking coal and steam coal. The company also has coalbed methane resources of around 8.9 billion cubic meters. In addition, it owns geological reserves of high-grade oil shale, about 3.5 billion tons, of which the exploitable reserve is 920 million tons. Industrial development: Hydroelectric and thermal power are important locally available energy sources. Solar is beginning to make it's mark on the City as well. Fushun has developed through the utilization of the abundant natural mineral deposits found in the area and is a nationally important heavy industrial base for petroleum, chemical, metallurgy machinery, and construction material industries. New sectors also becoming prominent are electronics, light industry, weaving, and spinning. New-Energy automotive manufacturing has also taken root and is quickly becoming a large portion of the manufacturing sector. Transportation Fushun is located 40 km (25 mi) from Shenyang Taoxian airport. Railways and highways connect the city to Shenyang and Jilin Province. The seaports of Dalian and Yingkou are also nearby, 400 and 200 km (250 and 120 mi) away respectively, with good highway connections. Tourism Fushun is a famous tourist center of northeast China. With high mountains and thick woods (40% forest coverage), the city has a developed a strong tourist industry. Houshi National Forest Park, about 55 km (34 mi) from Fushun city center, is rated by the central government as an AAAA tourist attraction. Saer Hu Scenic Area covers some 268 km2 (103 sq mi). It includes the 110 km2 (42 sq mi) Dahuofang Reservoir, the largest man-made lake in northeast China. There are a number of historic and cultural sites within the area. Fushun's success in applying for two UNESCO World Heritage sites is expected to attract more tourists. They include a site known as Xingjing City, the origin of the Qing Dynasty, which is within today's Fushun. It was the first capital of the Late Jin dynasty, dating to 1616. The second site contains the Yongling tombs, where several members of the royal household are buried. In more recent times, Fushun was where Lei Feng was stationed as a soldier and died, and a memorial museum telling his life story is a popular attraction. It is located at Wang Hua District in Fushun. It was also in Fushun that the last emperor, Puyi, was imprisoned after the end of World War II. The Fushun War Criminals Management Centre is converted into a museum in 1986. Another war memorial, the Pingdingshan Tragedy Memorial Hall Ruins, tells the story of a massacre of Chinese people by the Japanese in 1931. It was rebuilt and expanded in 2007. It includes a pit filled with about 800 bodies—largely infants, adults, and the elderly who were killed by the Japanese. In addition, Red River Valley in Fushun has become an entertainment resort, especially in summer. Tourists can travel down the river on small rubber rafts through mountain scenery. Video use permission granted directly by Fushun Government.

Chinese State-owned Mining Companies Exploit Zambian Miners, Says Rights Group

02:39
For more news visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Follow us on Facebook ☛ http://me.lt/9P8MUn Human Rights Watch released a report that severely criticizes Chinese copper mining companies in Zambia for exploiting miners and ignoring workers' rights. According to the report, Chinese state-owned mining corporations are consistently violating Zambian laws and international regulations. Here's more. Chinese state-owned copper mining companies in Zambia are being severely criticized by an international rights group. A Human Rights Watch report released on November 3rd states Chinese mining firms frequently violate Zambian and international labor laws and regulations. [Matthew Wells, Human Rights Watch, Africa Division, Researcher]: "We found that there were consistent threats to fire employees that refuse to work in unsafe places underground... the Chinese manager would actually threaten the worker that he'd be fired if he didn't go ahead." The 122-page report titled "You'll Be Fired if You Refuse" contains a comprehensive account of how these companies exploit Zambian miners. The violations include poor health and dangerous working environments, and long shifts—from 12 to 18 hours of hard labor. The report identifies China Non-Ferrous Metals Mining Corporation (CNMC)—a Chinese state-owned corporation—as the parent company of the four mining companies. It's compiled from recent interviews with miners from three on-site visits. The report cites the miners' saying "They just consider production, not safety. If someone dies, he can be replaced tomorrow." Miners report managers bribing or threatening workers to stop them from reporting accidents to the Zambian government Mines Safety Department. The head of Human Rights Campaign in China says the Chinese regime exports its bad practices. [Hu Jun, China's Human Rights Campaign Head]: "Communist China is now spreading its (predatory) concept a number of ways via social disruption overseas." They focus only on establishing rapport with the foreign government. [Liu Kaiming, Institute of Contemporary Observation Director, Shenzhen]: "It's the habit of the Chinese enterprises. They might have continued their habit in China. Their habit was to create good relations with the government... They don't care about the situation of the workers, or the opinion of the community." Human Rights Watch Africa director Daniel Bekele says many of the violations found in Zambia's Chinese state-owned mines reflect the same kind of abuses as those in China.

Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining US Group Attacks Chinese Coal Company

02:01
A group in the United States called the Tennessee Conservative Union released an advertisement on Monday. The ad supports proposed state legislature that would ban mountain top removal for virgin peaks over 2,000 feet. But behind the ad is concern that a Chinese owned mining company, which has surface rights to about 48 square miles, would cause damage to Tennessee's mountains. [ADVERTISEMENT] "Tennessee has become the first state in our great nation to permit the red Chinese to destroy our mountains and take our coal. The same folks who hold our debt, hack our businesses, and have the worst conservation record in the world." Triple H Coal Company was bought by Chinese state-owned Guizhou Gouchuang Energy Holdings Group last year. This was the first Chinese acquisition of a US coal company, and a top Chinese CEO in the coal industry said Chinese coal companies were interested in further acquisitions. While TCU is worried about the destructive practice of mountain top removal, it is also concerned over Chinese companies with a poor environmental record acquiring US assets. [ADVERTISEMENT] "We're proud that Tennessee is a red state, but just how red are we willing to go?" Environmentalist group Appalachian Voices points out that while the coal is mostly sent to other US states now, it may not be that way for long. Last year the US sent 12% of US coal overseas, and as alternatives to coal become cheaper in the US, the group predicts, that percentage will increase. It also warns that if the coal industry becomes more international, the profits from Tennessee coal will go overseas while the pollution will stay at home. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Zhang Dekuan, Shandong provincial spokesman: "Our water pumping equipment brought outside is being installed and two of them have started pumping water." 13. Zoom out of river STORYLINE Hope was fading on Sunday for 181 miners trapped underground for more than two days after a collapsed dyke flooded two coal mines. Rescuers finally managed to repair the breach in the dyke in Shandong province and pipes and high-speed pumps were installed to empty the mine shafts, but there was no indication whether the miners were still alive or how long it would take to pump the water out. The mine - run by the Huayuan Mining Company - flooded on Friday when the Wen river burst the dike, sending water pouring into a shaft and trapping 172 miners. Nine more miners were trapped when water poured into a nearby mine shaft. Both shafts are about 600 kilometres (370 miles) southeast of Beijing. Access to the disaster area was blocked, but upset family members could be seen at the gates of a compound that appeared to house offices of the company. At one gate, about 60 people yelled at guards and officials, complaining no information had been released, not even a list of the names of the trapped miners. It is common for the Communist rulers to limit media coverage of accidents. It took 23 minutes before a brief item on the mine flooding appeared on the main evening television news. One relative told AP Television his family had not received any information from the authorities about the fate of their loved one. The miners make about 800 yuan (106,79 US dollars) a month, slightly less than the average urban salary in China but two and a half times the average rural one. According to a government Website, the mine was previously called the Xinwen Mining Group Zhangzhuang Coal Mine, but underwent a reorganisation in March 2004 when it went bankrupt. The State Administration of Work Safety Website said it had become a shareholding enterprise, but did not give any other details. An accountant who worked for the Xinwen company, but was fired in 2003, said there was a lot of resentment toward the company even before the accident because 30 percent of the work force was sacked that year before it was reorganised. The accountant, who refused to give his name, also said output had fallen from about 1 (m) million tons a year in the late 1980s to between 600-thousand and 700-thousand now. The company now employs about six-thousand people, he said. China's coal mines are the world's deadliest, with thousands of fatalities a year in fires, floods and other disasters. Many are blamed on managers who disregard safety rules. The government has promised for years to improve mine safety, but China depends on coal for most of its electric power, and the country's economic boom has created voracious demand. China's deadliest reported coal mine disaster since the 1949 Communist revolution was an explosion that killed 214 miners on February 14, 2005, in the Sunjiawan mine in Liaoning province. BHP Billiton sees massive profit drop

00:36
Mining behemoth BHP Billiton has announced a massive 31 percent drop in profits for the half-year to December. The falling price of iron ore, coal, copper and related commodities has hurt BHP. To offset the profit fall the company has cutback spending on exploration and general investment. BHP ploughed $6.4bn into its business last year down some 23 percent on the previous 12 months. Still analysts expected results to be a lot worse. … READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2015/02/24/bhp-billiton-sees-massive-profit-drop euronews business brings you latest updates from the world of finance and economy, in-depth analysis, interviews, infographics and more Subscribe for daily dose of business news: http://bit.ly/1pcHCzj Made by euronews, the most watched news channel in Europe.

Seven Trapped In China Mine Accident

01:02
Rescue efforts were underway after a coal mine accident in southwest China left seven miners trapped underground, state media reported on Wednesday (July 24). The accident occurred at around 1:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday (July 23) (1700 GMT MONDAY JULY 22) when 273 miners were working in the shaft of the Shanmushu Coal Mine in Gongxian county, Sichuan province, official Xinhua news agency said. Xinhua said 266 of the miners managed to escape and seven remained missing. No information was provided on the accident. Over 120 rescuers and 20 medical workers have been dispatched to take part in the rescue operation, state broadcaster CCTV reported. Mine officials had planned to replace gas in the 800-metre-deep shaft with nitrogen first before sending rescuers down, local media reported. The cause of the accident is under investigation, CCTV said. The Shanmushu Coal Mine belongs to state-owned Sichuan Coal Group. China's mines are the deadliest in the world because of lax enforcement of safety standards and a rush to feed demand from a robust economy. QJ 6811 between Xiagongchang and Dadongzhang... (HD)

09:07
Shandong province is usually shrouded in a thick haze, limiting visibility considerably, but not so on November 17 this year! This kind of clear weather is really very unusual there, and so I'm well aware of the fact that I was very lucky to be able to be there at that time! And not only the weather was cooperating, the Yanzhou Coal Mining Company (YanKuang Group Co. Ltd.) also helped to make this day very successful, by putting both of their QJs into active service! One of them, QJ 6811, is seen here hauling a long empty powerstation train from Xiagongchang to Dadongzhang. The train must have weighed almost 1000 tons, and the grade is against the QJ, but its not even working very hard... Another evidence that QJs are very powerful beasts! Human Rights Asia Weekly Roundup Episode 81

15:55
This week’s Roundup begins in the Indian state of Kerala. The state government has initiated a process of police reforms. This unique initiative involves enabling the police to undertake scientific crime investigation. AHRC TV interviews AHRC Executive Director Bijo Francis to learn more about the outlook for this reform initiative. The programme then moves to events in China, where prominent human rights lawyer Wang Yu has been disappeared. Recently, over 100 human rights lawyers and activists have been detained in China. Lawyers have urged U.S. President Barack Obama to pressure President Xi on China’s human rights record when the two meet in September. Next, AHRC TV seeks Adilur Rahman Khan’s views on a horrifying new “trend” in Bangladesh. Law enforcement officers have started shooting detainees in the legs, often disabling them as a result. The number of such cases has reached about a hundred. In Pakistan, police have been using the pseudonyms of “half-fry” and “full- fry” to indicate the nature of torture faced by a suspect. “Half-fry” is colloquial for maiming a person for life and “full-fry” indicates extrajudicial execution. In the last six months, 118 suspects have died in fake encounters and the police have handicapped more than 200 victims. The programme then tracks back to the Indian state of Meghalaya, where illegal rat hole coal mining has caused irreparable environmental damage, posed many health problems, and caused deaths of child labourers. Although the National Green Tribunal has officially banned coal mining, as many as 308 cases of illegal mining have recently been registered. AHRC TV interviews Hasina Kharbhih to learn more about the situation. The programme ends in Thailand, which has deported 109 Uighur men back to China, while sending 36 women and 144 children to Turkey. Human rights groups and Washington have criticised the deportation harshly; the UN refugee agency has described the repatriation as “a flagrant violation of international law.” The Uighurs sent back to China await trial there.

Sindicatum China Coal Mine Methane and VAM Projects, December 2010

07:22
Sindicatum mobilized its global resources to promote the development and implementation of new technologies in the mitigation of Coal Mine Methane ("CMM") emissions and it has concentrated its efforts in China, where emissions are the greatest. Coal mining is a major source of global methane emissions and China is the world's largest coal producer, mining almost nine times more coal from underground longwalls than the US -- the second largest coal producer in the world. Methane is a major safety problem for mines, as well as representing a significant source of anthropogenic GHG emissions and lost value for mine owners.

Beijing Train Station Electric Locomotive, Coal & Underage Alcohol Purchase

03:56
A small look at the Beijing train station as we were getting ready to head to Shenyang. Geno has his "Flat Stanley" from school (needed to take pictures in different places with "Flat Stanley" as we traveled). Then down on the platform as we entered our high-speed train, showing one of the slow speed Electric Locomotives. Some pictures of onboard food, which was a delicious Fish, Egg and Rice meal. Served HOT. If you wanted, you could have purchased an Instant Noodle bowl, and hot water dispenser is located near the restrooms. At Shenyang station, Geno thoughtfully went and purchased me an assortment of Beer. Underage drinking isn't really a problem in China, so not too strict on kids purchasing alcohol. Binge drinking is usually done in groups for business meetings or get-togethers by adults, and I see it more as a "who can handle more", in which case I always win ;-) Benefits of living in Wisconsin..... China steam finale - electric interlude at Pingzhuang and Yangbaoshan, September 2011

13:56
The first part of this video shows miners, the colliery yard and narrow gauge overhead electric trains at a mine at Yuanbaoshan in NE China in 2011. The second part of the video shows the large open cast mine at Pingzhuang which opened in 1958 and which is served mainly by East German LEW standard gauge electric locomotives, and a very brief look at a steam train serving the deep mines. The electric locomotives (1500 V DC BoBo-engines) are seen on the tracks behind the industrial complex tipping out loaded wagons and working to and from the open cast mine. The open cast mine is a fascinating system (but long past its glory days) with unusual electric veterans. The electric locomotives were built by VEB Lokomotivbau -- Elektrotechnische Werke 'Hans Beimler' of Hennigsdorf near Berlin (the site formerly occupied by AEG and Borsig plants, now a part of Bombardier), commonly known as LEW. This factory supplied a number of locomotives for the mining industry. LEW built three basic types of locomotives for open-pit mines: six-axle EL1 and four-axle EL2 for standard gauge and four-axle EL3 for the 900 mm gauge. All were based on pre-war AEG design (from late 1920s, further developed during WWII) and had many common features. Heavy, 150-tonne EL1s were built for export to the Soviet Union and China only, but two remaining types have found more widespread use. The first EL2s appeared in 1952 and subsequently this type was built in large numbers, enjoying a very long production run: last examples left the assembly lines in 1988. First deliveries were to open-pit mines in East Germany. Later EL2s were exported to the Soviet Union, China (186, between 1957 and 1984), Bulgaria and Poland. Despite comparatively young age, the EL2 class has already earned itself a heritage locomotive status: in December 2007, withdrawn 4-1124 (LEW 13605/1980) was plinthed at the Bombardier -- Werk Henningsdorf premises. The EL2 is a robust and straightforward machine with the Bo'Bo' axle arrangement, designed to haul heavy loads at a moderate speed. These somewhat archaic-looking, but efficient locomotives, are a reminder of the early years of electrification. A later video will show steam trains at Pingzhuang. Some sound has been dubbed because of a microphone fault. Please pass on this link to other interested groups. Thanks.

While rescuers search for the missing men, police are also investigating the duty manager, who should have been in the mine during the shift. Thirty-four miners were confirmed dead on Sunday after a coalmine gas leak accident in southwest China's Yunnan Province. Nine miners are still trapped underground. The accident occurred Thursday at Sizhuang Coalmine, located in the county of Shizong. Authorities have been pumping gasses out of the mine so that they can reach the miners still underground. [Li Jianjun, Secretary-General, Qujing City]: "Our next step is to search for miners at level 1724. The problems we face now are coal dust and a high gas concentration, which has reached nearly 55 percent. So our main work is to pump the gas out, clear the coal dust and drain the water out." About 200 rescuers in six groups are taking turns around the clock to search for the trapped miners. The duty manager, Qi Guming, originally said that he had been in the mine on the day of the explosion and managed to escape. However, it now appears that his escape was faked. [Li Jianjun, Secretary-General, Qujing City]: "A police report shows that Qi Guming confessed that he actually did not go down the shaft that day, which means that he lied. His case is undergoing further investigation." Qi Guming is currently in police custody.

Pro-Russia demo calling for the reinstatement of Yanukovych

02:26
More than 5,000 pro-Russia residents of a major city in Ukraine's east demonstrated on Saturday in support of Viktor Yanukovych, the Ukrainian president who fled to Russia in February in the wake of three months of protests in the capital, Kiev. Protesters in Donetsk were also in favour of holding a referendum on whether to seek to split off and become part of Russia. The rally came less than a week after the Ukrainian region of Crimea approved secession in a referendum regarded as illegitimate by the Western countries. After the referendum, Russia moved to formally annex Crimea. About an hour after the Donetsk rally began, the crowd marched through the city centre and assembled before the regional administration building chanting, "Crimea! Donbass! Russia!" Donbass is the name for the region of factories and mines that includes Donetsk. Demonstrators waving Russian flags were confronted by lines of riot police. Eastern Ukraine is the heartland of Ukraine's economically vital heavy industry and mining and the support base for Yanukovych. Russia and Yanukovych supporters contend Yanukovych's removal from power was a coup and allege that the authorities who then came to power are nationalists who would oppress the east's large ethnic Russian population. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said there is no intention to move into eastern Ukraine, but the prospect of violence between pro- and anti-secession groups in the east could be used as a pretext for sending in troops. As tensions roil in the east, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe is deploying an observer team aimed at easing the crisis. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement on Friday that Moscow hopes that the 200-strong team "will help to overcome the internal Ukrainian crisis" and ensure the respect for human rights there.
