Germany's coal mining industry is all but finished as viable coal seams are worked out. Following an earthquake, mines in the Saarland will close in 2012 and mining in North Rhine-Westphalia's will end in 10 years at most. But German mining equipment is still in demand; more than a hundred mostly medium-sized businesses have found customers in countries where mining is booming. One such company is Eickhoff, in Bochum, which produces milling and cutting equipment for coal mining. Now Eickhoff exports 95% of its mining equipment, mainly to China and Russia. Robert Donauer went to a mine in the Ruhr Valley and paid a visit to Eickhoff.

They use a unique hauler technology that has lasted them through the ages. In addition to the timeless technique, they’ve added a brand new, high-efficiency Advanced IGBT AC-Drive system. Hitachi is one of the most eco-friendly companies that produce hauling trucks. They can raise profits by lowering fuel and maintenance costs. They are able to spend less, to make more, and get more done in the process. The machine itself weighs about 550 tons, but has a payload of 325 tons. With a 2,850 hp, the Hitachi EH5000AC-3 knows how to get the most out of its fuel. It also has safety measures built in. A Slip/Slide Control System will add traction in slippery conditions, such a rainstorm or when ice is on the roads. Not to mention, this makes sharp turns much easier as well. A pitch control system will allow this truck to drive over rough roads with ease. Meaning, the driver won’t lose any of its load when off-road. With LCDs, heating/cooling controls, independent cabs, monitoring cameras, and much more, it is likely this machine is the most advanced and well thought out truck in the world. #8 BelAZ 75710 As the make suggests, the BelAZ is a manufacturer based in Belarus. As of 2016, it is the world's largest, highest payload capacity haul truck. The BelAz 75710 is equipped with a two-axle setup yet the wheels are a four to an axle! Because of this, it also needs eight large 59/80R63 tires. Four-wheel drive and four-wheel hydraulic steering is seen on this truck. A funny addition considering its turning radius is only 20 meters. It can be loaded to a capacity of nearly 500 short tons and still drive as usual. Though empty, it still weighs over 350 tons. It is 66 feet long, 26 feet tall, and 32 feet wide. That’s about three times as tall as a Giraffe. Rather than using the power of one single engine, it is powered by two 65-litre 16-cylinder diesel engines, each of these engines having 2,300 horsepower. Since the fuel consumption is 198 g/kWh per engine, there is an option to use only one engine when carrying smaller loads. At its best, it can travel 40 miles per hour. BelAz believes in this 2013 truck so much, that they have invested $644 million in increasing its total production capacity. #7 Caterpillar 797F The Caterpillar 797F is Caterpillar's largest, highest payload capacity haul truck! It appears to be every little boy’s dream to drive one of these when he grows up as the 797 series is the perfect Tonka truck model! The Caterpillar 797F was first mentioned to the public at MINExpo International in September, 2008. This guy was the successor to the 797B. The 797F has a higher payload capacity and a more powerful, more efficient engine than its predecessor. Because of these increases, Caterpillar could meet the needs of mine operators' so they were able to increase the efficiency of their work. They also saved money by reducing the costs considering the payload was much higher, meaning less trips, less fuel, less time. The payload capacity? 400 short tons! The horsepower? A gross 4,000! The top speed? 42 miles per hour! This truck is fully geared with a rear axle mounted, computer controlled, seven speed planetary transmissions that is equipped with an integral lock-up torque converter. #6 Bucyrus MT 6300AC You have to see this military-style machine to believe it! Built for mining, it is a sight to behold and a wondrous machine unlike any other! The Bucyrus MT6300AC is an off road, double-axle, ultra class, diesel/AC electric powertrain haul truck. It was designed and manufactured by Bucyrus International Inc. in America. The MT6300AC is the company’s biggest, highest payload capacity haul truck, and closing in on the highest in the world at 400 short tons. Even fully-loaded, this hauler can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. On February 19, 2010, the Terex Unit Rig MT6300AC was re-branded which created the Bucyrus MT6300AC. This took place when Bucyrus International Inc. took over the mining equipment area of Terex Corporation. You may know Bucyrus makes as Caterpillar's UnitRigs as in 2011, Caterpillar took over a good part of the Bucyrus trucks.

The 10 Biggest Land Vehicles Ever Built Ever wondered to what lengths humans will go to munch up the Earth and transport bits of it from one place to the next? These are our greatest instruments. We found the most massive land vehicles ever built, largely made for mining and the occasional war. #10. Caterpillar 797 What it does: The mining industry uses really big trucks. Trucks like the Caterpillar 797 are proportioned like a somewhat normal vehicle, only blown up a dozen times to take 400 ton payloads of ore. Dimensions: 50 feet long, 24 feet tall (51 feet raised), and 31 feet wide. #9. NASA Crawler Transporter What it does: The two Space Shuttle transporters each have two 2,750 horsepower V16 diesel engines and yet they have a top speed of 2 miles an hour. That's halved when a space shuttle is onboard. That should give you a sense of how massive these things are. Dimensions: 131 feet long, 114 feet wide, and over 20 feet tall. #8. Scheuerle SPMT What it does: One self-propelled modular transporter is nowhere near the largest vehicle in the world. It is a low, flat platform with dozens of computer controlled wheels that can move independently from each other. Each SPMT, however, can be connected to another. They can clamp together like Voltron, becoming unbelievably massive and able to carry the heaviest loads of any land vehicle. This includes a 14,350 ton offshore oil platform. Dimensions: As big as you want it to be. #7. LeTourneau TC-497 Overland Train hat it does: The amazingly paranoid US government of the 1950s had the Texan company LeTourneau design these wheeled land trains, which could operate without the need for railway lines. This would presumably help us when the Ruskies nuked our train tracks. Dimensions: The cab was over 30 feet tall and the whole train stretched 570 feet long. It had 54 wheel drive. #6. Helepolis What it does: Helepolis (not Heliopolis) is the only manually-powered vehicle on this list. Built around 304 BC, it is also the largest siege tower ever made. With iron plating on three sides and three catapults, Helepolis needed 3,400 men to push it on its eight wheels. Dimensions: 65 feet wide, 130 feet tall, and weighing 160 tons. #5. Herrenknecht EPB Shield S-300 What it does: This is the largest tunnel-boring machine ever built, eating its way through soft ground like some giant mechanical worm. It drives itself and just barely qualifies as a land vehicle, though it's more through-land than on-land. Dimensions: It is 374 feet long with a shield diameter of 50 feet. #4. Schwerer Gustav What it does: We have met Nazi Germany's über cannon before, carried on a 1.5 kilometer-long train. There have been longer trains built, but none of them could fire seven-ton shells. Dimensions: 24 feet wide, 38 feet tall, and 155 feet long. Add just under a mile to that for the full train. #3. Big Muskie What it does: It eats mountains. Built for the Central Ohio Coal Company in 1969, it was the largest single-bucket digging machine ever made. It could swallow 295 tons in one bite out of the ground. Dimensions: 151 feet wide, 222 feet tall, and 487 feet long. It weighed a svelte 13,500 tons. Compare that to The Captain, which weighed 15,000 tons. #2. F60 Overburden Conveyor Bridge What it does: Ever wondered why Germany is one of the strongest economies in the world? Coal. Coal that was dug up by the biggest land vehicles we've ever made, like the four F60 Overburden Conveyor Bridges. They would carry all of the waste dirt and rock out of open pit brown coal mines in eastern Germany. Dimensions: They are 262 feet tall, 787 feet wide, and 1,647 feet long. It weighs 13,600 metric tons. #1. Bagger 293 What it does: The Hambach brown coal mine in western Germany plays host to the Bagger 293, formerly known as the TAKRAF RB293. It both looks and sounds like it's out of a Ridley Scott movie. Built in 1995, this one machine is just a touch larger than its sibling, the Bagger 288. It has a bucket wheel that is over 70 feet in diameter, with 20 buckets, each capable of scraping 15 cubic meters of dirt out of the Earth. It and its sibling have been known to accidentally eat bulldozers. Dimensions: 315 feet tall and 738 feet long, weighing 31.3 million pounds.

The Bagger 293 is a giant bucket-wheel excavator built in Germany in 1995. It requires a crew of five to operate and can move over 8.5 million cubic feet of earth per day. The Bagger 293 uses a large 70-foot rotating wheel at the end of a long arm. This wheel has a series of buckets attached, and as the wheel rotates the buckets pick up the earth and dump it onto a conveyor belt. The conveyor belts will transport the earth to other vehicles for removal to the dumping site. Last month the UN warned about the potential impacts of climate change. Now scientists and officials are meeting in Berlin to finalise another report on what to do about it. They are expected to call for a major push for renewable energy like wind and solar and a move away from fossil fuels such as coal. This comes as many countries try to switch to low-carbon forms of power - among them Germany which is now the world leader in solar power but also remains the largest producer of one of the dirtiest forms of fuel. David Shukman visited a lignite coal mine south of Berlin to see the scale of the operation.

There will be 3 Sluice boxes working, when I am done building in a few weeks.. In episode 3 of YouTube GOLD, we showed off the new watering system we built. After designing, and redesigning - I came up with a slightly different watering system that was more direct, very powerful - and is able to run an entire plant. Big, Bigger, BIGGEST! 3 MASSIVE MACHINES that move (and work!) (World’s biggest / largest ever built!) NASA CRAWLER-TRANSPORTERS: The NASA crawler-transporters are the largest land transport vehicles in the world. Each crawler weighs about 2.7 million kilograms or about 6 million pounds. They are 40 meters or 131 feet long and 35 meters or 114 feet wide. Built in 1965 at a cost of 14 million US dollars each, the 2 crawler-transporters are actually nicknamed “Hans” and “Franz”. And what absolutely magnificent works of design and engineering they both are – these massive machines and their combined 8 thousand horse power engines have smoothly and faithfully carried all the Saturn V rockets and all the Space Shuttles the 5 mile journey from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the Launch Pad. And in fact between the 2 of them they have travelled more than 3,400 miles in total, that’s about the distance from Miami to Seattle. BERTHA: Big Bertha is the world’s largest tunnel boring machine… and here she is in 41 pieces leaving Osaka Bay Japan on route to the United States of America. The 80 million dollar 57.5 foot diameter Bertha was designed specifically for the SR99 Tunnel Project commissioned by the Washington State Department of Transportation. Named after Seattle’s only Female Mayor, Bertha Knight Landes, the massive machine Bertha is 326 feet long and weighs 7,000 tons or 14 million pounds. And as she winds her way under Seattle, Bertha will chew through approximately 35 feet of rock and soil each day. She will also, using her giant pair of arms, automatically erect and seal thousands of concrete panels as she goes. She is simply incredible, and is surely one of the greatest machines ever devised. BAGGER 293: Bagger 293 is the biggest terrestrial vehicle of all time (and the biggest mining machine ever). Built in 1995 by the German industrial company TAKRAF, Bagger 293 is a giant bucket wheel excavator that currently works in a brown coal mine near Hambach in western Germany. At 738 feet long and towering 315 feet high, this gigantic contraption weighs 14,200 tonnes or about 31 million pounds. Powered by enough electricity to sustain a medium sized town, each of Bagger 293s 20 buckets can hold about 80 bathtubs worth of dirt, meaning it can move about 8.5 million cubic feet of earth per day. … to put that in perspective, that’s the equivalent of digging a really, really big hole…. and to be more precise… that’s about the size of digging a football field 30 meters or about 100 feet deep, in a single day. If you want buy one of these monstrous mechanical marvels, you’ll need at least 100 million US dollars and a crew of 5 to drive it… but you won’t have to worry about speeding tickets, as this Big Bopper has a top speed of only 0.9 kilometres per hour.

Daimler demonstrates autonomous truck platooning; Highway Pilot Connect delivers ~7% lower fuel consumption Daimler Trucks demonstrated the new Highway Pilot Connect system for autonomous truck platooning on the A52 autobahn near Düsseldorf. Three WiFi-connected, autonomously driving trucks operated on the autobahn with authorization for public traffic in a platoon formation. Such a combination can reduce fuel consumption by up to 7% and the road space requirement on motorways by almost half, while improving traffic safety at the same time, Daimler said. Based on the Daimler Trucks Highway Pilot system for autonomously driving heavy trucks (earlier post), the three trucks link up to form an aerodynamically optimized, fully automated platoon. Connected vehicles in a platoon require a distance of only 15 meters instead of 50 meters between them. This considerably smaller distance produces a significant reduction in aerodynamic drag—comparable to slipstream riding in cycling competitions. In this way a platoon of three trucks can achieve the ~7% fuel saving, resulting in fuel consumption figures of around 25 l/100 km (9.4 mpg) possible for a loaded semitrailer combination with a gross weight of 40 t. This corresponds to a consumption of only 0.66 l/100 km (356 mpg) per tonne, or CO2 emissions of 13.3 g per kilometer per tonne. In parallel with this, platooning allows much more efficient use of the road space: thanks to the shorter distance between vehicles, a platoon of three linked trucks has a length of only 80 meters. In contrast to this, three trucks which are not electronically docked require a total of 150 meters of road space. At the same time platooning makes road traffic much safer: while a human behind the wheel has a reaction time of 1.4 seconds, Highway Pilot Connect transmits braking signals to the vehicles behind in less than 0.1 seconds. This considerably reduced reaction time can make a major contribution towards reducing rear-end collisions such as occur e.g. when encountering traffic jams on motorways. The smart, self-optimizing truck has the highest priority for us. Using connected communication between the truck and other vehicles and the surroundings, we can improve traffic flow and lower fuel consumption and emissions. At the same time intelligent trucks help to lower the number of traffic accidents. This is an important step on our way towards accident-free driving. —Sven Ennerst, Head of Truck Product Engineering & Global Procurement The basis of Highway Pilot Connect is networking between vehicles and precise awareness of the surroundings. Highway Pilot Connect is a further development of the well-tried Highway Pilot system by Daimler Trucks. This system allows trucks to drive semi-autonomously, and has been under test since October 2015, in a standard Mercedes-Benz Actros operating on public roads in Germany. The Highway Pilot was first presented in July 2014, in the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 study, followed by the very first public road authorization for an autonomously driving truck in May 2015, for the Freightliner Inspiration Truck (earlier post). Compared to the Highway Pilot, Highway Pilot Connect has the additional technical function for electronic vehicle docking. Communication between vehicles is made possible by an onboard telematics platform. A specific V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) communication module using a special WiFi standard reserved exclusively for automotive enables direct data transfer between the trucks. Highway Pilot Connect uses this for a constant exchange of information with other trucks and the environment. Because of their technology, all the members of such a platoon continue to be autonomously driving trucks. They are able to maintain their direction independently of the vehicle ahead, and thanks to their combination of linear and lateral guidance, they can react to unexpected situations at any time. This also applies if other vehicles cut into or leave the platoon’s space. In this case the vehicle can smoothly disengage from the platoon and continue alone in autonomous mode. The driver does not need to intervene. Docking three or more vehicles together becomes particularly interesting in countries with a corresponding infrastructure. In the USA or Australia, for example, trucks cover long distances without bridges and exit roads on highways crossing the entire continent. Dating to the 1930s, this silent 16mm film from Germany shows the surface mining of coal using large continuous bucket wheel dredges (:38) or Riesenschaufelradbagger (coal mining machines). At 2;20, the buckets are seen up close scraping the earth continuously off the side of the mine site. At 3:23 the raw material enters a series of conveyer belts where it is moved at high speed and then placed in a large heap at 4:30. At 9:29, ore cars loaded with coal are moved to a processing facility and converted at 10:40 into bricks or briquettes. Bucket wheel excavators are machines for mining raw materials and for use on large construction sites. Particularly large bucket wheel excavators - with dimensions of several hundred meters - are used in lignite mining. Bucket wheel excavators are among the largest and most spectacular excavators in the world and have been manufactured since the 1930s. Since 1978, there are excavators that can move daily up to 240,000 tons of coal or cubic meters of overburden . These 240,000er are the largest excavators in the world today. With their commissioning and a weight of more than 12,000 tons, they became the largest land vehicles in the world, ahead of the delivery platforms for the US moon rockets. Built in 1978 by VVB TAKRAF Lauchhammer excavator 1510 SRs6300 in the Lausitzer district and built in the same year by Krupp Industrietechnik bucket wheel excavator "288" in the Rheinische Revier were the first excavators in this performance class. The excavator 288 is currently working in the Garzweiler open pit ( RWE Power ). The primary application of BWEs is in lignite (brown coal) mining, where they are used for soft rock overburden removal in the absence of blasting. They are useful in this capacity for their ability to continuously deliver large volumes of materials to processors, which is especially important given the continuous demand for lignite. Because of the great demand for lignite, lignite mining has also been one of the areas of greatest development for BWEs. The additions of automated systems and greater manoeuvrability, as well as components designed for the specific application, have increased the reliability and efficiency with which BWEs deliver materials. The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT; German: Gotthard-Basistunnel, Italian: Galleria di base del San Gottardo, Romansh: Tunnel da basa dal Son Gottard) is a railway tunnel through the Alps in Switzerland. It opened on 1 June 2016, and full service began on 11 December 2016. With a route length of 57.09 km (35.5 mi), it is the world's longest and deepest traffic tunnel and the first flat, low-level route through the Alps. It lies at the heart of the Gotthard axis and constitutes the third tunnel connecting the cantons of Uri and Ticino, after the Gotthard Tunnel and the Gotthard Road Tunnel. The link consists of two single-track tunnels connecting Erstfeld (Uri) with Bodio (Ticino) and passing below Sedrun (Graubünden). It is part of the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA) project, which also includes the Ceneri Base Tunnel further south (scheduled to open late 2020) and the Lötschberg Base Tunnel on the other main north-south axis. It is referred to as a "base tunnel" since it bypasses most of the existing Gotthard railway line, a winding mountain route opened in 1882 across the Saint-Gotthard Massif, which was operating at its capacity before the opening of the GBT. The new base tunnel establishes a direct route usable by high-speed rail and heavy freight trains. The main purpose of the Gotthard Base Tunnel is to increase local transport capacity through the Alpine barrier, especially for freight, notably on the Rotterdam–Basel–Genoa corridor, and more specifically to shift freight volumes from trucks to freight trains. This both significantly reduces the danger of fatal road crashes involving trucks, and reduces the environmental damage caused by heavy trucks. The tunnel provides a faster connection between the canton of Ticino and the rest of Switzerland, as well as between northern and southern Europe, cutting the Basel/Zürich–Lugano–Milan journey time for passenger trains by one hour (and from Lucerne to Bellinzona by 45 minutes). After 64 percent of Swiss voters accepted the NRLA project in a 1992 referendum, first preparatory and exploratory work began in 1996. The official start of construction began on 4 November 1999 at Amsteg. Drilling operations in the eastern tunnel were completed on 15 October 2010 in a breakthrough ceremony broadcast live on Swiss TV, and in the western tunnel on 23 March 2011. The tunnel's constructor, AlpTransit Gotthard AG, originally planned to hand over the tunnel to Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS) in operating condition in December 2016 but, on 4 February 2014, the handover date was changed to 5 June 2016 with the start of an 850-day opening countdown calendar on the AlpTransit homepage. As of 1998, the total projected cost of the project was CHF 6.323 billion; as of December 2015, the final cost is projected as CHF 9.560 billion. Nine people died during construction.

Bagger 288 (Excavator 288), built by the German company Krupp for the energy and mining firm Rheinbraun, is a bucket-wheel excavator or mobile strip mining machine. When its construction was completed in 1978, Bagger 288 superseded Big Muskie as the heaviest land vehicle in the world, at 13,500 tons.[1] In 1995, it was itself superseded by the slightly heavier Bagger 293 (14,200 tons). NASA's Crawler-Transporter still remains the largest self-powered land vehicle in the world, since bucket-wheel excavators are powered by an external power source, and the Overburden Conveyor Bridge F60s hold the title of largest land vehicle of any type by physical dimensions. The Terex RH 400 front shovel has two Cummins QSK 60-C two-stage, turbocharged, aftercooled and intercooled, 16-cylinder engines producing 4,500 net horsepower (HP). It comes standard with a TriPower shovel attachment, independent oil cooling system, five-circuit-hydraulic system, electronic-hydraulic servo control, torque control in the closed-loop swing circuit, automatic central lubrication system, Xenon working lights, Board Control System (BCS), spacious cab, and a hydraulically-driven radiator fan with electronically controlled speed.

It is now owned and operated by RWE AG, a large utility company. If you want to get the dirt out, or move a mountain, this is absolutely the right machine. The RWE Bagger 288 earth digger stands 311 feet tall, is 705 feet long and weighs 45,500 tons (the weight of the Titanic was 46,328 tons) and by its scale alone is quite intimidating. Technically it is a bucket wheel excavator. In appearance it seems to be a giant's version of an Erector Set project that got out of hand. And when it comes to moving mountains, it has no peers. Indeed, moving mountains is exactly what may happen in Rosio Montana in Romania. The plan is to use similar machines to get at a wealth of gold. The Canadian company Rosio Montana Gold intends to accomplish this. "All five mountains will simply be mined out," says Andrej Grubacic, a historian from the region. After all as Stuart L. Udall once said, "Mining is like a search and destroy mission." The RWE Bagger 288 excavator was designed to work in open-pit coal mines in Germany. That's where it is now digging in and loading up. However, for all its mass, it may have a short life. The German Republic has mandated a shutdown of all German coal mining by 2018. Clearly this mandate is open to some modification in the interim. Being big, the Bagger 288 can only go one-third of a mile an hour on three rows of caterpillar track assembles. If it crosses a highway, as it has done on rare occasions, the roadway must be fully rebuilt as the sheer weight crushes the cement and anything else in its path. It has also crossed rivers, after careful preparation. Any move requires at least 70 men to prepare the way and the last time cost some $10 million to complete. The machines does not need the kind of mobility provided by treads while it is mining, but it was considered less expensive to move the vehicle on caterpillar treads rather than disassembling it and reassembling it at its destination. It cost $100 million to build, took five years to design and manufacture, and five years to assemble. When it was completed, the Bagger 288 passed NASA's Crawler-Transporter, used to move the space shuttle and Apollo space craft as the world's largest land vehicle. It takes five people to operate it, and little wonder, as it has a 70-foot diameter bucket wheel. Each of its 20 huge buckets can scoop up over 530 cubic feet of material. It moves on 12 crawlers with tank-like treads. After all it is German. One of the buckets once picked up a large bulldozer by mistake. The machine can process 100,000 cubic yards of material, hopefully coal, and that amounts to up to 2,500 truck loads a day that can make for a good deal of wear and tear on the local environment. Yes it does have a lot of cargo space, but 3 or 4 Boeing 747's would be a much more sensible, economical & overall better cargo solution. 3) Bagger 288 This German built monster was built for one thing and one thing only. It's a coal mining machine which can mine up to an area the size of a soccer field down to 90 meters per day. It requires over 16.5 megawatts of power just to operate it. To put that in perspective, that kind of power could power over 2500 houses per day. With a top speed of 2-10 meters per minute, its not very fast but it sure as hell can mine better than any other vehicle in the world. 2) Prelude FLNG This giant ship is so large its basically an island. Built in late 2012 by Samsung for the petroleum company Shell, it cost a whopping $10 billion to make. At 1600 feet long, and weighing over 600,000 TONNES when operational, its not only a engineering masterpiece but astonishing to look at. As you probably have guessed this isn't a commercial ship instead its used to take natural gas and turn it into liquid out at sea instead of on land. 1) Schwerer Gustav This German WW2 Giant Railway gun was the largest caliber rifled weapon ever used in combat. This bad boy can fire 7 ton shells almost 30 miles away. It is the king of siege weapons, used in the second world war to take down one of the strongest French fortifications. The shells themselves are almost as big as a standard tank so you can imagine the destructive power this monster had. However its great size was also its great flaw. The Schwerer Gustav was so big it could only move on railway tracks, meaning it wasn't easy to move about or operate. It also required a crew of 250 to assemble the gun & 2,500 to lay down its tracks, meaning it was actually more of a liability than an asset to the German army. Only two where ever built & both where destroyed at the end of the second world war.

A 10 minute compilation of all crashes uploaded between 2008 and 2016 by 11foot8.com, copyright Jürgen Henn FAQ What is the location of the 11foot8 bridge? 201 Gregson St in Durham, NC (intersection with Peabody St) Why is the bridge so low? This train trestle is about 100 years old. At the time when it was built, there were no standards for minimum clearance. How often do trucks crash into the bridge? On average, about once a month a truck gets visibly damaged at the bridge. However, every day I see trucks that trip the overheight warning lights, stop and turn into the side street. Why don’t they fix it? Depends on who “they” are and on what “fix” means. The North Carolina Railroad Company owns the train trestle, and their concern is primarily with keeping the trains running and keeping them running safely. So their concern is mainly with reducing the impact of the truck crashes on the actual structure of the train trestle. As far as they are concerned, they solved that problem by installing the crash beam. The city of Durham has installed “low clearance” signs on each of the 3 blocks leading up to the trestle (Gregson is a one-way road). There is an “overheight when flashing” sign with flashing lights that are triggered by vehicles that are too tall. Several blocks ahead of the trestle the speed limit is 25 MPH. The folks from the city planning department said that they made an effort to prevent accidents. The North Carolina Dept. of Transportation maintains the road, but not the signage. I suspect they have much bigger problems to deal with statewide than this bridge. Is the clearance signage accurate? The clearance signage displays a maximum safe clearance – and yes, in that sense it is accurate. The actual clearance of the crash beam right in front of the trestle is 11 feet 10.8 inches, which gives it a 2.8 inch safety margin. The MUTCD allows for a maximum of 3 inches difference between the signage and the actual clearance. Metric, please! Would this situation be better if the signage were metric? Well … take a look at his website: 2m40.com (Warning: French. Metric) For the convenience of our metric-only audience, here are the measurements we’re talking about in meters: 11foot8 (11 feet 8 inches) = 3.556 meters 11 feet 10.8 inches = 3.627 meters Safety margin: 7.1 cm (at the crest of the road) Can’t the road be lowered? That would be prohibitively expensive because a sewer main runs just a few feet below the road bed. That sewer main also dates back about a hundred years and, again, at the time there were no real standards for minimum clearance for railroad underpasses. Can’t the bridge be raised? Here, too, the question is who would want to pay the millions of dollars to raise the tracks a couple of feet? To accomplish this, the grade of the tracks would have to changed on both sides of the trestle, probably for several miles. That would require rebuilding all trestles in Durham. And NS would have to shut down this busy track for months. I don’t think they are interested in that idea. Is the signeage inadequate? The signeage is pretty good. Large signs alert driver to the low clearance several blocks before the bridge. Overheight vehicles trip a light switch that turns on flashing warning lights.right at the bridge. Should there be more signeage? It’s hard to see how more “low-clearance” signs will significantly improve the situation. But maybe a different kind of signeage would get the driver’s attention. Could they install a low-clearance bar? A low clearance bar is a bar suspended by chains ahead of the bridge. Overheight vehicles hit that bar first and the noise alerts the driver to to the problem. I understand that this approach has been successful in other places, but it’s not practical here. There are many overheight trucks that have to be able to drive right up to the bridge and turn onto Peabody St. in order to deliver supplies to several restaurants. Making Peabody St inaccessible from Gregson St would make the restaurant owners and the delivery drivers very unhappy. Why are they using yellow flashing lights? Warning lights have to be yellow according to the NC traffic laws. Are the drivers stupid? No idea. They certainly seem distracted and the rental truck drivers are also probably inexperienced. Will insurance cover the damages? Most truck rental insurance policies specifically exclude overhead damage from coverage. However, a good auto insurance or liability insurance might pick up the tab. Check with your agent. Or even better – don’t hit the bridge!

For the second time this year Ziegler launches a brand new unique innovation in the fire fighting vehicle market. Earlier this year Ziegler introduced the Merkur, the first electrical tunnel rescue vehicle with two driver cabins. During 2012 the global Ziegler group was able to win contracts for over 500 new trucks worldwide. In cooperation with their partner company Trepte, Ziegler has now introduced an extremely compact special purpose fire truck. This vehicle, known as the Ziegler Fire Ant, is only 67" wide, 98" tall, and under 20 feet long. It carries on board a water tank with over 600 gallons, and the entire equipment required under German fire fighting industrial norm 14530-18. The Fire Ant is built on a Multi Car Chassis and has outstanding manueverability characteristics. It is optimal for narrow roads and areas that are hard to get to with normal fire trucks. "We see many opportunities for this extremely small truck, especially in midevil town centers, mountainous regions, and for mining and other industries" said Phillip Thompson, a member of the board of management of Ziegler. The first model, with a total weight of 7.5 tons, has already been completed and is ready to go into operation. In the coming weeks and months Ziegler will be presenting the vehicle to potential customers around the world at different events, and through multimedia. Ziegler's project partner Trepte based in former East Germany, has worked closely with the company for over 40 years.
