Jesse Ventura Corporate and Government Conspiracies are Undermining Democracy

32:51
COAST TO COAST AM. Former Independent governor of Minnesota, Jesse Ventura is also a former professional wrestler, a movie actor, and a visiting fellow at Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He detailed corporate and government conspiracies which he believes are undermining the fabric of the country, as well as opined about the 2016 presidential election. The campaigning for president starts way too early, he asserted. "We need to pass a law that says you cannot even form a campaign committee until the year of the election," he said, noting that multiple senators and governors are missing votes, and not doing their jobs by focusing on their campaigns. A World in Revolution: The Inevitable Backlash against Global Elites

01:23:12
Skip ahead to main speaker at 3:20 The Trump election and populist movements in Europe and Asia can be considered akin to true revolutionary movements--ideologically driven; brought about by a slow-down in social mobility, elite factionalization and decline in public goods; and pursuing a revolutionary agenda including propagandist reshaping of reality and a radical reconfiguration of international relations. This talk will show the common demographic factors behind these developments, and examine whether historical lessons can be drawn regarding the durability of such revolutionary movements in modern democratic states. Why Capitalism Triumphs in the West and Fails Everywhere Else: Economics & Markets (2001)

Hernando de Soto Polar (or Hernando de Soto; born 1941) is a Peruvian economist known for his work on the informal economy and on the importance of business and property rights. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0465016154/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0465016154&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=8bdb4e4ebd6ba6fd4cc5cd245add07d7 He is the president of the Institute for Liberty and Democracy (ILD), located in Lima, Peru. Between 1988 and 1995, he and the Institute for Liberty and Democracy (ILD) were responsible for some four hundred initiatives, laws, and regulations that changed Peru's economic system.[3] In particular, ILD designed the administrative reform of Peru's property system which has given titles to more than 1.2 million families and helped some 380,000 firms, which previously operated in the black market, to enter the formal economy.[4] This latter task was accomplished through the elimination of bureaucratic "red-tape" and of restrictive registration, licensing and permit laws, which made the opening of new businesses very time-consuming and costly. Yale University political scientist Susan C. Stokes believes that de Soto's influence helped change the policies of the recently elected Alberto Fujimori from a Keynesian to a neoliberal approach. De Soto convinced then-president Fujimori to travel to Chicago, where Fujimori met with several important figures within the International Monetary Fund, the US Department of State, and the Chinese embassy, who convinced him that he had to abide by the rules set by the international financial institutions. These policies led to a reduction in the rate of inflation.[5] The Cato Institute and The Economist magazine have argued that de Soto's policy prescriptions brought him into conflict with and eventually helped to undermine the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) guerrilla movement. By granting titles to small coca farmers in the two main coca-growing areas, they argued that the Shining Path was deprived of safe havens, recruits and money, and the leadership was forced to cities where they were arrested.[6][7] ILD notes a large terrorist attack on de Soto and statements by Shining Path leader Abimael Guzman who saw ILD as a serious threat.[8] After the split with Fujimori, he and his institute designed similar programs in El Salvador, Haiti, Tanzania, and Egypt and has gained favor with the World Bank, the World Bank-allied international NGO Slum Dwellers International and the government of South Africa. Time magazine chose De Soto as one of the five leading Latin American innovators of the century in its special May 1999 issue Leaders of the New Millennium, and included him among the 100 most influential people in the world in 2004.[15] De Soto was also listed as one of the 15 innovators "who will reinvent your future" according to Forbes magazine's 85th anniversary edition. In January 2000, Entwicklung und Zusammenarbeit, the German development magazine, described De Soto as one of the most important development theoreticians.[16] In October 2005, over 20,000 readers of Prospect magazine of the UK and Foreign Policy magazine of the U.S. ranked him as number 13 on the joint survey of the world's Top 100 Public Intellectuals Poll. U.S. presidents from both major parties have praised De Soto's work. Bill Clinton, for example, called him "The world's greatest living economist",[17] George H. W. Bush declared that "De Soto's prescription offers a clear and promising alternative to economic stagnation…"[18] Bush's predecessor, Ronald Reagan said, "De Soto and his colleagues have examined the only ladder for upward mobility. The free market is the other path to development and the one true path. It is the people's path… it leads somewhere. It works."[19] His work has also received praise from two United Nations secretaries general Kofi Annan – "Hernando de Soto is absolutely right, that we need to rethink how we capture economic growth and development"[20] – and Javier Pérez de Cuéllar – "A crucial contribution. A new proposal for change that is valid for the whole world." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hernando_de_Soto_Polar

While these factors are only a drop in the ocean regarding what makes a country economically successful, the poorest countries in the world get these factors all wrong. While the availability of natural resources is the foundation of an economically robust country, utilising the resources well is a whole other aspect. This is not civic education 101, so we will get straight to the point and list the countries yet to realise self-actualisation. Here are the top 10 poorest countries in the world as of 2018. 10. Madagascar – $1477 9. Guinea – $1388 8. Eritrea – $1210 7. Mozambique – $1208 6. Niger – $1069 5. Burundi – $951 4. Liberia – $934 3. Malawi – $819 2. The Democratic Republic of Congo – $753 1. The new age of corporate monopolies | Margrethe Vestager

19:49
Margrethe Vestager wants to keep European markets competitive -- which is why, on behalf of the EU, she's fined Google $2.8 billion for breaching antitrust rules, asked Apple for $15.3 billion in back taxes and investigated a range of companies, from Gazprom to Fiat, for anti-competitive practices. In an important talk about the state of the global business, she explains why markets need clear rules -- and how even the most innovative companies can become a problem when they become too dominant. "Real and fair competition has a vital role to play in building the trust we need to get the best of our societies," Vestager says. "And that starts with enforcing our rules." Why The American Dream Is Gone — But The Chinese Dream Is Alive

02:56
Eurasia Group president Ian Bremmer, author of "Us vs. Them: The Failure of Globalism," explains how the American working and middle classes haven't seen improved standards of living over the past 40 years. This has resulted in the rise in anti-establishment figures like Trump and Bernie Sanders—mirroring the populist wave in Europe. Business Insider tells you all you need to know about business, finance, tech, science, retail, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/ BI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/businessinsider/ BI on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/businessinsider/ BI on Twitter: https://twitter.com/businessinsider -------------------------------------------------- Following is a transcript of the video: Ian Bremmer: If you are a member of the working or middle class in the United States your life has not improved in last 40 forty years. We have taken hundreds and hundreds of millions of people out of poverty around the world over the course of the past decades. The rise of China has been extraordinary, 1.4 billion people we've never seen anything like it. That growth has occurred on the back of open borders and free trade, no question. But you have lost a lot of opportunities in the West. You have created much greater structural inequality and it's not just about the economy, but the economy's a big piece of it. If you are a member of the working or middle class in the United States your life has not improved in the last 40 years, you feel like the American dream no longer applies to you while the Chinese feel like the Chinese dream that's something that they can be a part of. That obviously undermines the notion of liberal democracy. If the majority of Americans don't think they're capitalists 'cause they don't have capital then they're not gonna support a capitalist system and they're particularly not gonna support it if they think that the capitalists on top aren't doing anything for them. If their infrastructure isn't being invested into, if their schools aren't being invested into, if their policing isn't being invested into, if their healthcare is worse than it used to be, if we're not responding to a massive opioid crisis then they're not going to support these governments. And by the way, we're saying this at a time when the US economy is growing at a strong clip. We're saying this at a time when the IMF has just upgraded their expectations for global growth in 2018 and 2019 to 3.9%, the best the world economy has done since before the financial crisis. If that's the case now, what's gonna happen in the next recession? What's gonna happen suddenly when we don't have a huge tax plan that benefits everyone and we're spending like crazy and increasing the deficit. What's gonna happen suddenly when times get tighter and when the corporations aren't hitting the profitability that they are right now. I mean clearly this is a situation that is going to get worse. We elected Trump in the United States. So people think it was an illegitimate election but there's no question he got the Republican nomination over 16 other candidates and Ted Cruz was probably number two. Bernie Sanders was clearly enormously popular on the Democratic side. Whoever won the US election, we've not seen an election like this with this kind of anti-establishment sentiment in certainly, not as long as I've been alive, and in Europe the vote for Brexit, in Germany, the support for the Alternatives For Deutschland party for the first time a nationalist party in the German parliament since Word War II. Given their history that's extraordinary. In Italy, the Five Star movement, the Northern League winning from the far left and the far right, this is obviously not an accident.

The Amazing "We Want Willkie!" Convention of 1940 and How It Freed FDR to Save the Western World

56:57
Wendell Lewis Willkie (born Lewis Wendell Willkie; February 18, 1892 – October 8, 1944) was an American lawyer and corporate executive, and the 1940 Republican nominee for President. Willkie appealed to many convention delegates as the Republican field's only interventionist: although the U.S. remained neutral prior to Pearl Harbor, he favored greater U.S. involvement in World War II to support Britain and other Allies. His Democratic opponent, incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt, won the 1940 election with about 55% of the popular vote and took the electoral college vote by a wide margin. Willkie was born in Indiana in 1892; both his parents were lawyers, and he also became one. He served in World War I but was not sent to France until the final days of the war, and saw no action. Willkie settled in Akron, Ohio, where he was initially employed by Firestone, but left for a law firm, becoming one of the leaders of the Akron bar. Much of his work was representing electric utilities, and in 1929 Willkie accepted a job in New York City as counsel for Commonwealth & Southern Corporation (C&S), a utility holding company. He was rapidly promoted, and became corporate president in 1933. Roosevelt was sworn in as U.S. president soon after Willkie became head of C&S, and announced plans for a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) that would supply power in competition with C&S. Between 1933 and 1939, Willkie fought against the TVA before Congress, in the courts, and before the public. He was ultimately unsuccessful, but sold C&S's property for a good price, and gained public esteem. A longtime Democratic activist, Willkie changed his party registration to Republican in late 1939. He did not run in the 1940 presidential primaries, but positioned himself as an acceptable choice for a deadlocked convention. He sought backing from uncommitted delegates, while his supporters – many youthful – enthusiastically promoted his candidacy. As German forces under Hitler rampaged through western Europe in 1940, many Republicans did not wish to nominate an isolationist like Thomas E. Dewey, and turned to Willkie, who was nominated on the sixth ballot over Ohio Senator Robert A. Taft. Willkie's support for aid to Britain removed it as a major factor in his race against Roosevelt, and Willkie also backed the president on a peacetime draft. Both men took more isolationist positions towards the end of the race. Roosevelt won an unprecedented third term, taking 38 of the 48 states. After the election, Willkie made two wartime foreign trips as Roosevelt's informal envoy, and as nominal leader of the Republican Party gave the president his full support. This angered many conservatives, especially as Willkie increasingly advocated liberal or internationalist causes. Willkie ran for the Republican nomination in 1944, but bowed out after a disastrous showing in the Wisconsin primary in April. He and Roosevelt discussed the possibility of forming, after the war, a liberal political party, but Willkie died in October 1944 before the idea could bear fruit. Willkie is remembered for giving Roosevelt vital political assistance in 1940, which allowed the president to aid Britain in its time of crisis. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendell_Willkie

Making Money from Misery? Disaster Capitalism from the Migrant Crisis to Afghanistan and Haiti

18:52
When disaster strikes, who profits? That’s the question asked by journalist Antony Loewenstein in his new book, “Disaster Capitalism: Making a Killing out of Catastrophe.” Traveling across the globe, Loewenstein examines how companies such as G4S, Serco and Halliburton are cashing in on calamity, and describes how they are deploying for-profit private contractors to war zones and building for-profit private detention facilities to warehouse refugees, prisoners and asylum seekers. Recently, Loewenstein teamed up with filmmaker Thor Neureiter for a documentary by the same name that chronicles how international aid and investment has impacted communities in Haiti, Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea and beyond. Former President Barack Obama is delivering a speech on the "state of our democracy" at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus Friday, in what will set his tone for campaigning ahead of the November midterm elections. The former commander-in-chief is receiving the Paul H. Douglas Award for Ethics in Government, which will be given to him by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. Obama, who has chimed in from time-to-time to remark on President Trump's words and actions, is expected to address threats to the United States' democracy and the consequences of apathy, and urge fellow Americans to vote this November. The award Obama is receiving is the same one that was bestowed upon the late Sen. John McCain, for whom Obama gave a eulogy last week in Washington. UK COMMON LAW,A LAWFUL REBELLION

http://youtu.be/uBU1_GbZ8P0?list=UU6Ow4_4DQatgmnbymLtM1GQ without background music The video you are about to watch (and please watch all of it, it is very informative) details how our governments are not really what we think they are anymore. In fact, they are nothing more than corporations; not figuratively, but actually corporations. This makes sense when you think about it in relation to the Global Fascist Government that is being set up. For they would need to abolish the nation states in any legal manner they could, but they would also need to set up a governing body that extends beyond the limits of language and nationality, in order to accomplish that. So, like math is a universal language, the corporate model is a global one. If they are capable of setting up nations as corporations, then they will fit more neatly into their pyramid structure of control that is well on it's way to being created. Decolonization and Nationalism Triumphant: Crash Course World History #40

12:49
READ THIS: THERE ARE TWO MORE VIDEOS IN THE WORLD HISTORY SERIES. You should also turn on the captions. You'll like them. In which John Green teaches you about the post-World War II breakup of most of the European empires. As you'll remember from previous installments of Crash Course, Europeans spent several centuries sailing around the world creating empires, despite the fact that most of the places they conquered were perfectly happy to carry on alone. After World War II, most of these empires collapsed. This is the story of those collapses. In most places, the end of empire was not orderly, and violence often ensued. While India was a (sort of) shining example of non-violent change, in places like The Congo, Egypt, Rwanda, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, things didn't go smoothly at all. John brings you all this, plus pictures of Sea Monkeys. Sadly, they don't look anything like those awesome commercials in the comic books. 'Clinton quite effective at discrediting herself' Ex-CIA analyst blasts hacking claims A FORMER CIA analyst has dismissed a report claiming Vladimir Putin led an elaborate cyberattack to install Donald Trump in the White House, saying the analysis is an attempt to “smear” the President-elect. Larry C Johnson branded the newly declassified US intelligence report “as a farce and a charade”, adding Russian attempts to discredit the Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton were unnecessary because “she was quite effective at it herself”. On Friday, intelligence officials published their findings into alleged Russian hacking during November’s US election. The report claimed the Russian president personally ordered an online campaign to influence the outcome of the ballot in Trump’s favour. It said Mr Putin’s goal was to undermine the democratic process and denigrate Mrs Clinton, by using intermediaries such as DCLeaks.com, Guccifer 2.0 and WikiLeaks to publicly expose private emails acquired from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and top level Democrats. Under the cover of Xmas Obama created a massive government propaganda agency for Trump to play with Throughout the 2016 presidential campaign the corporate media, Democratic Party operatives and the pundit class all proclaimed that Donald Trump is a fascist. The fascistic nature of our political, law enforcement and economic systems were conveniently omitted from these warnings, but assertions of Trump’s untrustworthiness were repeatedly endlessly. If that characterization has any validity at all then Barack Obama’s establishment of a de facto Propaganda Department is a terrible blow to democracy. The title seems benign enough until one reads its mission. “The purpose of the Center shall be to lead, synchronize, and coordinate efforts of the Federal Government to recognize, understand, expose, and counter foreign state and non-state propaganda and disinformation efforts aimed at undermining the United States national security interests.” In plain English, this act establishes an official propaganda arm of the United States government. Of course, there has always been governmental coordination used to spread lies about American foreign policy. The government doesn’t even have to work very hard because the corporate media usually march in lockstep and repeat their every claim uncritically. But these are dangerous times for the American hegemon. Its ability to continue exercising imperial control has been damaged by foreign governments successfully resisting its efforts and by the election of Donald Trump. Trump has questioned the need for NATO, pledged to end regime change and to improve relations with Russia. These are reasonable policy decisions or rather they would be if the worldwide neo-liberal regime didn’t feel so threatened. What should be simple disagreements are treated as omens of the end of the world. Perhaps they do signal the end for some members of the ruling classes who believe that their survival depends on America controlling or crushing the rest of the world. The Global Engagement Center makes real the Democratic Party plan to silence dissent and create a network of propaganda partners. The act provides for grant making appropriations to “civil society groups, media content providers, nongovernmental organizations, federally funded research and development centers, private companies or academic institutions…” A recent @NYTimes report confirms rebel groups supported by the US are allied w/al-Qaeda & affiliated groups. Al-Qaeda, ISIS & affiliates remain the strongest force on the ground trying to overthrow the Syrian gov. With Saudi, Qatar, Turk & US support. http://www.nytimes.com/.../middle.../donald-trump-syria.html Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard Says The U.S. Government Is Directly Funding ISIS And Al Qaeda! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKV1sTw8zOc

Jeremy Scahill: "Dirty Wars" | Talks at Google

01:05:00
Jeremy Scahill comes to Google to talk about his new book, Dirty Wars: The World is a Battlefield. In Dirty Wars, Jeremy Scahill, author of the New York Times bestseller Blackwater: The World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army, takes us inside America's new covert wars. The foot soldiers in these battles operate globally and inside the United States with orders from the White House to do whatever is necessary to hunt down, capture, or kill individuals designated by the president as enemies. Drawn from the ranks of the Navy SEALs, Delta Force, former Blackwater and other private security contractors, the CIA's Special Activities Division, and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), these elite soldiers operate worldwide, with thousands of secret commandos working in more than one hundred countries. Funded through "black budgets," Special Operations Forces conduct missions in denied areas, engage in targeted killings, snatch and grab individuals, and direct drone, AC-130, and cruise missile strikes. While the Bush administration deployed these ghost militias, President Barack Obama has expanded their operations and given them new scope and legitimacy. Dirty Wars follows the consequences of the declaration that "the world is a battlefield," as Scahill uncovers the most important foreign policy story of our time. From Afghanistan to Yemen, Somalia, and beyond, Scahill reports from the frontlines in this high-stakes investigation and explores the depths of America's global killing machine. He goes beneath the surface of America's covert wars, conducted in the shadows, outside the range of the press, without effective congressional oversight or public debate. And, based on unprecedented access, Scahill tells the story of an American citizen marked for assassination by his own government. As US leaders draw the country deeper into conflicts across the globe, setting the world stage for enormous destabilization and blowback, Americans are not only at greater risk—we are changing as a nation. Scahill unmasks the shadow warriors who prosecute these secret wars and puts a human face on the casualties of unaccountable violence that is now official policy: victims of night raids, secret prisons cruise missile attacks and drone strikes, and whole classes of people branded as "suspected militants." Through his reporting, he exposes the true nature of the dirty wars the United States government struggles to keep hidden. About the Author: Jeremy Scahill is National Security Correspondent for The Nation magazine and is a Puffin Foundation Writing Fellow at The Nation Institute. He is the writer, with David Riker, and a producer of the documentary feature film, Dirty Wars, which won the Cinematography Award for U.S. Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival 2013. IFC Films releases Dirty Wars in theaters June 7, 2013 throughout the United States. Scahill has reported from Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Nigeria, Yemen, the former Yugoslavia and elsewhere across the globe. Scahill is a frequent guest on a wide array of programs, appearing regularly on The Rachel Maddow Show, Real Time with Bill Maher, and Democracy Now!. He has also appeared on ABC World News, CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News, BBC, al Jazeera, CNN, The NewsHour, and Bill Moyers Journal. Scahill's work has sparked several Congressional investigations and won some of journalism's highest honors. He was twice awarded the prestigious George Polk Award, in 1998 for foreign reporting and in 2008 for his book Blackwater. In 2013, Scahill was named one of nine recipients of the Donald Windham-Sandy M. Campbell Literature Prizes at Yale University.

A series of high profile lobbying controversies suggest it could be: the resignation of defence secretary Liam Fox over his ties to Adam Werrity, public affairs agency Bell Pottinger's 'bragging' about access to government, the revelations to the Leveson Inquiry about contact between News Corp's lobbyist Frederick Michel and culture secretary Jeremy Hunt's special adviser Adam Smith. And industry support for All Parliamentary Groups and the existence of firms solely created to influence politicians reinforce suspicions that politicians are buyable. One commentator argues politicians should be forced to dress like Formula 1 drivers displaying the logos of all their 'sponsors'. Lobbying is now regularly characterised as 'legalised bribery'. In response, the government is considering a statutory register of lobbyists, which could result in PR agencies, trade unions and charities being subject to fines and even imprisonment for 'improper attempts' to influence politicians. One of Barack Obama's first acts as US president was to clamp down on the 'revolving door' which sees members of the administration walk straight into highly paid private sector jobs. Transparency International UK tells us that there are five lobbyists to every politician, which sounds like a worrying development. But is it such a bad thing that politicians speak to representatives of relevant industries, unions and campaign groups before formulating policy? If politics is about the clash of different interests, is lobbying not an integral part of the democratic process? Would we rather have supposedly incorruptible, and unelected, judges and civil servants in power? Moreover, many lobbyists represent civil society groups rather than big business; Greenpeace is as much in the lobbying game as Bell Pottinger. Trade unions still aspire to negotiate for workers' rights over beer and sandwiches at Number 10. Every charity has public affairs professionals to make their case to government ministers, whether on minimum alcohol pricing or nuclear power. Indeed the NGO sector is split on the issue, with some keen to expose unfair corporate influence on decision-making and others concerned regulation might be too severe. Ironically, many lobbying charities are dependent on state money, and are described by critics as 'sock puppets', which allow government to lobby itself. Are such lobbyists bypassing democracy? Is it a problem that so much political debate is conducted behind closed doors by paid professionals, rather than by citizens openly in the public sphere? Or is there a danger that increased demands for audit and control and oversight of lobbying will undermine a key element of democracy?

The Stephen Miller Story: From Pestering Latino Students in High School to Drafting Muslim Ban

13:27
http://democracynow.org - A new investigation by Univision shows how President Trump’s senior White House policy adviser, 31-year-old Stephen Miller, was well known at his Santa Monica High School for heckling his fellow Hispanic classmates, including telling them to speak only English. He’s now best known as one of the architects behind Trump’s Muslim travel ban. For more, we speak with one of Miller’s former classmates, Cynthia Santiago, the first Latina president of the school’s Associated Student Body and now an immigration defense lawyer who has been helping people impacted by Trump’s travel ban. We also speak with Univision reporter Fernando Peinado. His recent piece is titled "How White House advisor Stephen Miller went from pestering Hispanic students to designing Trump’s immigration policy." The New Financial Geopolitics: Post-Cold War Geopolitics in a World of ‘Long and Low.’

01:36:01
The New Financial Geopolitics: How long can the US keep going as the Lender, Leader, and Reserve Asset of Last Resort? Panel 5: What Happens to Post-Cold War Geopolitics in a World of ‘Long and Low.’ If interest and inflation rates are likely to remain long and low for the foreseeable future, what impact will this have on the Dollar-Centered order? What other sources of volatility are out there to upset the applecart? How does power politics get redrawn in such a world? Panelists: Adam Tooze (Columbia), Jan Fitchner (University of Amsterdam), Herman Schwartz (University of Virginia), Jonathan Kirshner (Cornell University) ______________________________ The current global financial order, which was placed into sharp focus by the swap lines initiated by the US Federal Reserve during the 2008 financial crisis, is an American order. Despite generating trillions of debt and demonstrating a truly dysfunctional politics, the US continues to be the leader, lender, and the preferred asset issuer of last resort for the global economy. But how long can this state of affairs continue? One school of thought suggests that it can continue indefinitely, given the lack of alternative safe assets, the depth and liquidity of US markets, and the desire of foreign wealth holders to buy safety in the form of US assets. And yet things continue until they don’t. Due either to its own domestic dysfunctions, or to its international entanglements, the ‘barbelling’ of risk that US has been able to play, whereby US investments earn a higher risk premium abroad while foreign investors hold US assets as security for a lesser return may come to an abrupt end sooner than many commentators think. If the US suffers real capital losses on its assets abroad, if the global economy continues ‘long and low’ into negative territory, of if other major players grow tired of America’s dysfunctions, then the dollar order may become less attractive over time, prompting the rise of alternative assets and new institutional arrangements. This conference seeks to address these topics by answering three questions. First, how stable, if not “anti-fragile’ to use Nassim Taleb’s term of art, is the US order? Second, will the ongoing political crisis and economic recession in the Eurozone, and geopolitical tensions in East Asia, prolong or threaten the US order? Third, is there a new geopolitics emerging underneath this financial system, and if so, what does it look like?

Lobbying Firm offers plans to Undermine Occupy Wall Street

04:55
A well-known Washington lobbying firm with links to the financial industry has proposed an $850,000 plan to take on Occupy Wall Street and politicians who might express sympathy for the protests, according to a memo obtained by the MSNBC program "Up w/ Chris Hayes." The proposal was written on the letterhead of the lobbying firm Clark Lytle Geduldig & Cranford and addressed to one of CLGC's clients, the American Bankers Association. CLGC's memo proposes that the ABA pay CLGC $850,000 to conduct "opposition research" on Occupy Wall Street in order to construct "negative narratives" about the protests and allied politicians. The memo also asserts that Democratic victories in 2012 would be detrimental for Wall Street and targets specific races in which it says Wall Street would benefit by electing Republicans instead. According to the memo, if Democrats embrace OWS, "This would mean more than just short-term political discomfort for Wall Street. ... It has the potential to have very long-lasting political, policy and financial impacts on the companies in the center of the bullseye." The memo also suggests that Democratic victories in 2012 should not be the ABA's biggest concern. "... (T)he bigger concern," the memo says, "should be that Republicans will no longer defend Wall Street companies." Two of the memo's authors, partners Sam Geduldig and Jay Cranford, previously worked for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. Geduldig joined CLGC before Boehner became speaker; Cranford joined CLGC this year after serving as the speaker's assistant for policy. A third partner, Steve Clark, is reportedly "tight" with Boehner, according to a story by Roll Call that CLGC features on its website. Jeff Sigmund, an ABA spokesperson, confirmed that the association got the memo. "Our Government Relations staff did receive the proposal -- it was unsolicited and we chose not to act on it in any way," he said in a statement to "Up." CLGC did not return calls seeking comment. Boehner spokesman Michael Steel declined to comment on the memo. But he responded to its characterization of Republicans as defenders of Wall Street by saying, "My understanding is that President Obama is the single largest recipient of donations from Wall Street." On "Up" Saturday, Anita Dunn, Obama campaign adviser, responded by saying that the majority of the president's re-election campaign is fueled by small donors. She rejected the suggestion that the president himself is too close to Wall Street, saying "If that's the case, why were tough financial reforms passed over party line Republican opposition?" The CLGC memo raises another issue that it says should be of concern to the financial industry -- that OWS might find common cause with the Tea Party. "Well-known Wall Street companies stand at the nexus of where OWS protestors and the Tea Party overlap on angered populism," the memo says. "...This combination has the potential to be explosive later in the year when media reports cover the next round of bonuses and contrast it with stories of millions of Americans making do with less this holiday season." The memo outlines a 60-day plan to conduct surveys and research on OWS and its supporters so that Wall Street companies will be prepared to conduct a media campaign in response to OWS. Wall Street companies "likely will not be the best spokespeople for their own cause," according to the memo. "A big challenge is to demonstrate that these companies still have political strength and that making them a political target will carry a severe political cost." Part of the plan CLGC proposes is to do "statewide surveys in at least eight states that are shaping up to be the most important of the 2012 cycle." Specific races listed in the memo are U.S. Senate races in Florida, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wisconsin, Ohio, New Mexico and Nevada as well as the gubernatorial race in North Carolina. The memo indicates that CLGC would research who has contributed financial backing to OWS, noting that, "Media reports have speculated about associations with George Soros and others." "It will be vital," the memo says, "to understand who is funding it and what their backgrounds and motives are. If we can show that they have the same cynical motivation as a political opponent it will undermine their credibility in a profound way." http://upwithchrishayes.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/11/19/8896362-exclusive-lobbying-firms-memo-spells-out-plan-to-undermine-occupy-wall-street-video by Jonathan Larsen and Ken Olshansky (crossposted from MSNBC's "Open Channel" blog)

Occupy Cologne (political performance art) in Cologne (Köln), Germany - 25th August, 2012

01:36
The Occupy movement is an international protest movement against social and economic inequality, its primary goal being to make the economic structure and power relations in society fairer. Different local groups have different foci, but among the prime concerns is the claim that large corporations and the global financial system control the world in a way that disproportionately benefits a minority, undermines democracy and is unstable. This video is taken outside of Cologne Cathedral in Roncallplatz of political performance artists turning up walking in tents. To the bemused tourists in the sqaure, the group wearing tents drop their tents and then make a speech, before moving on to repeat their performance elsewhere.

Ten Years of Spring (Guatemala)

03:50
podacst on guatemala's ten year encounter with democracy (1944-1954) ------------------essay----------------------------------------- Guatemala spent the mid 20th century with its country in a state of angst. Approaching the 1940's under an oppressive dictatorship, Guatemala was in need of the political change, which was to come during the years of 1944-1954. This period in Guatemalan history, known as the Ten Years of Spring, is the countries brief encounter with democracy and social reform. Because of the dictatorship that proceeded it and the military rule that followed it, it is fitting to view this ten year period as a brief reprieve from oppressive government but not as a period free of instability. Instead Guatemalas government would become familiar with violent revolution during this time; including during the years of the ten years of spring. The Ten Years of Spring in Guatemala were characterized by a shift toward democratic government and reforms with socialist tendencies; as well as military coups and pressure from the United states who wanted to overthrow what they saw a developing communist state. Guatemala from 1930-1944 was under the rule of the Ubico dictatorship (5). Under his administration the United Fruit Company was welcomed on a red carpet, receiving tax exceptions, ownership of the countries only port, as well as vast amounts of land. Wide spread discontent led to an overthrow of the Ubico government by the "October Revolutionaries" (2). The revolution was lead by officers Arana and Arbenz of the Guatemalan military, who establish a democracy at the Guatemalan capital (1). 1944 hosted a general election in which both Arana and Arbenz abstained (2). Arèvelo was elected president and he would mark a significant shift in political focus from the leaders of the past (3). Under his rule Guatemala began initiating several reforms, including the illegalization of racial and gender discrimination, worker protection laws, as well as the creation of labor unions (2). These sweeping changes to Guatemalan politics instilled fear into the hearts of the owners of United Fruit. United Fruit feared that Nationalization of land by the government was eminent (1). So to prevent this they sent lobbyist to Washington, to promoted sentiment that communism was emerging in Guatemala (1). The United States, having a Cold War mindset, feared that the country could become a "beachhead" for the Soviets and determined to overthrow the government (2). As the news reached Washington, instability arose in Guatemala. Coups lead by Arana, a former leader of the "October Revolutionaries," with support from the US had to be fought off (1). As well as several others lead by those loyal to Arana. None of which were successful (1). In 1951 Arbenz easily took the presidency, and began work on modernization projects, such as a new port (1). However, Arbenz's major goal was the Nationalization of unused land from large landowners for redistribution to lower classes. Offering payment in the amount that the owners had themselves declared on their taxes (4). United fruit was the largest landowner on the island, and they had greatly undervalued their land on their taxes (4). So in order to avoid this situation the cried to Washington. The Eisenhower administration under the motivations of overthrowing a rising communist state began training Guatemalans to fight in a coup (1). The mission was entitled "Operation Success," it involved running smear campaigns against Guatemala, and training defected Guatemalans in Nicaragua (1). The operation was successful and it marked the end of the Ten Years of Spring. Arbenz was exiled from the country and a military dictatorship was established. This ten year period in Guatemalans history was an attempt to give the power of government back to the people. That ultimately fell at the hands of capitalism and cold war policy.

There are only 2 ways to amend our Constitution: (1) Go through Congress (single digit approval rating) or (2) Go through our State Legislators via an amendment proposing convention. Wolf-PAC believes that we can no longer count on our Federal Government to do what is in the best interest of the American people due to the unfettered amount of money they receive from outside organizations to fund their campaigns. We point to the failure of the Disclose Act as rock solid evidence that this would be a total waste of our time, effort, and money. We also point to the recent decision by the US Supreme Court to not even hear a case filed by Montana claiming it did not have to abide by Citizens United, as proof that state legislation is not a sufficient measure to solve this problem. We believe that we have no choice but to put an amendment in the hands of our State Legislators, who are not, at this moment in time, completely blinded by the influence of money, and might actually do what 96% of the country wants - take away the massive influence that money has over our political process.”* Read more here: http://www.wolf-pac.com/the_plan Hosts: Cenk Uygur Cast: Cenk Uygur *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. Quebec City FTAA Protests (2001) - VA3 Preview Pt. II

08:43
Quebec City Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) Protests, April 2001 in Quebec. This video is Part 2 of the VideoActive 3 (VA3) Preview video produced in February 2002. It was George W. Bush's first visit to Canada for the Summit of the Americas and security included a massive chain-link wall, and thousands of riot police and tear gas cannisters. Over 60,000 protested in the streets and the entire city was gassed. Hundreds were arrested, assaulted, beaten and jailed for standing up for democracy and against corporate trade deals that undermine rights and genuine prosperity in the Americas. This was a tear gas holiday no one would soon forget. Video produced by the Toronto Video Activist Collective © 2002/2007 http://www.tvac.ca/
