Hydraulic Gold Mining

19:53
This movie is the last remaining part of footage from an old video cassette that I owned. I believe that it is still available from the Empire Mines State Park. I do not own the copyright to this movie and this is being posted here under YouTube's Guidelines for informational and teaching purposes. Then I added pictures on my own of the Malakoff State park from days gone past when mining was active in the area to the end of this movie. This is a great addition to this hydraulic mining playlist, so watch history being taught from long ago & then learn & enjoy.

There's still gold in these hills The gold rushes of the 19th century have long since ended, but there are still plenty of places you can hunt for the precious metal using a shovel, pan, metal detector and more. In fact, recreational gold mining is a pastime these days for many people, and for good reason: the largest nugget ever found in California was discovered by an amateur. Here are some key locations worldwide that you can still prospect for the yellow metal – you never know, you may get lucky and strike it rich. Heading Underground at 'The Great Cwmystwyth Mines' in Wales

08:55
https://www.facebook.com/carlthepianist Photographers Andy T and Carl Lewis explore the subterrainain, 19th century Level Fawr of the Cwmystwyth mine. High up in the Cambrian Mountains, the young Afon Ystwyth flows through a deep glacial valley. Cwm Ystwyth is considered the most important non-ferrous metal mining site in Wales providing a premier example of mining heritage in Ceredigion. Within the site there is evidence for all phases of mining activity; from the Bronze Age, through the medieval period, to its revival in the 18th century and the peak of activity with a subsequent decline in the late 19th and the early 20th century. It has been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.[1] The site also features prominently in the Upland Ceredigion Landscape of Historic Interest. Our trip was prepared for a planned and we took all suitable precautions to protect our safety. Please see the following website for more information on the dangers of exploration and how to reduce risk: http://www.mine-explorer.co.uk/open-htm-white-paper.asp?id=1 Please ensure of you are both prepared and have permission before entering any mine of cave. This video should not be taken as fact and is for entertainment purposes only. Mines or caves can change overnight. This video was taken in January 2014. Stay safe and enjoy. (c) 2014 Carl Lewis

Gold Prospecting: 6 Days in the North Queensland Goldfields: Garrett AT Gold.

20:26
We spend 6 days in the red soil country of the North Queensland Goldfields prospecting for gold, searching for 'old timer's' relics and fossicking for gemstone agate. Featured relic finds include a Royal Navy Officer's jacket button dating from the Victorian era, and a 19th Century brass saddler's needle. On the final day, a bit of 'gully raking' and careful detecting with the Garrett AT Gold and AT Pro machines produces a lovely little sub-gram gold nugget. We hope you enjoy sharing our 6-day expedition to the Gulf Savannah Goldfields. Thanks for watching and subscribing! Colleen and Warren. www.nqexplorers.com www.garrettaustralia.com.au

US Mines & Mineral Resources: "United States: A Ten Talent Nation" 1922 American Motion Picture

13:24
Geology & Earth Sciences playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL33B1A9216BB65F7A more at http://scitech.quickfound.net Good overview of mining and mineral resources in the US as of 1922, with many nice film clips and lots of statistics. Reupload of a previously uploaded film with improved video & sound. Originally a public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mining Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth from an orebody, lode, vein, seam, or reef, which forms the mineralized package of economic interest to the miner. Ores recovered by mining include metals, coal and oil shale, gemstones, limestone, and dimension stone, rock salt and potash, gravel, and clay. Mining is required to obtain any material that cannot be grown through agricultural processes, or created artificially in a laboratory or factory. Mining in a wider sense includes extraction of any non-renewable resource such as petroleum, natural gas, or even water. Mining of stone and metal has been done since pre-historic times. Modern mining processes involve prospecting for ore bodies, analysis of the profit potential of a proposed mine, extraction of the desired materials, and final reclamation of the land after the mine is closed. The nature of mining processes creates a potential negative impact on the environment both during the mining operations and for years after the mine is closed. This impact has led to most of the world's nations adopting regulations to moderate the negative effects of mining operations. Safety has long been a concern as well, and modern practices have improved safety in mines significantly... Mining in the United States became prevalent in the 19th century, and the General Mining Act of 1872 was passed to encourage mining of federal lands. As with the California Gold Rush in the mid 19th century, mining for minerals and precious metals, along with ranching, was a driving factor in the Westward Expansion to the Pacific coast. With the exploration of the West, mining camps were established and "expressed a distinctive spirit, an enduring legacy to the new nation;" Gold Rushers would experience the same problems as the Land Rushers of the transient West that preceded them. Aided by railroads, many traveled West for work opportunities in mining. Western cities such as Denver and Sacramento originated as mining towns. As new areas were explored, it was usually the gold (placer and then load) and then silver that were taken first, with other metals often waiting for railroads or canals. Coarse gold dust and nuggets do not require smelting, is easy to identify and is easily transported. Modern period In the early 20th century, the gold and silver rush to the western United States also stimulated mining for base metals such as copper, lead, and iron as well as coal. Areas in modern Montana, Utah, Arizona, and later Alaska became predominate suppliers of copper to the world, which was increasingly demanding copper for electrical and households goods. Canada's mining industry grew more slowly than the United States due to limitations in transportation, capital, and U.S. competition; Ontario was the major producer of the early 20th century with nickel, copper, and gold. Meanwhile, Australia experienced the Australian gold rushes and by the 1850s was producing 40% of the world's gold, followed by the establishment of large mines such as the Mount Morgan Mine, which ran for nearly a hundred years, Broken Hill ore deposit (one of the largest zinc-lead ore deposits), and iron ore mines at Iron Knob. After declines in production, another boom in mining occurred in the 1960s and in the 21st century Australia remains a major world mineral producer. Into the 21st century, a globalized mining industry of large multinational corporations has arisen. Peak minerals and environmental impacts have also become a concern. Different elements, particularly rare earth minerals, have begun to increase in demand as a result of new technologies...

The Hemlo Gold Story

56:24
A CBC Documentary Prospectors John Larch, Don McKinnon and Richard Hughes discovered gold in the Hemlo camp in the early 1980s, starting a staking rush not seen in Canada since the Klondike gold rush of the late 19th century. Two companies, Golden Sceptre and Goliath Resources, secured rights to a large land package in the area, and were subsequently acquired by Noranda. Noranda permitted and built the Golden Giant mine in less than two years. With its first pour in April, 1985, the Golden Giant was the first mine in the camp to ship. Peak production occurred in the early 1990s, approaching 500,000 oz per year. During its 21-year life, the mine produced over 6 million ounces of gold. (from Wikipedia)

How Do You Find a Gold Vein? Mining 101: Ep 12.

02:33
Chairman of Exeter Resource Corp. Yale Simpson explains how you find a vein that is worth mining. From wiki: The difference between 19th century and modern mining techniques and the type of ore sought is based on the grade of material being mined and the methods of mining which are used. Historically, hand-mining of gold ores permitted the miners to pick out the lode quartz or reef quartz, allowing the highest-grade portions of the lodes to be worked, without dilution from the unmineralised wall rocks. Modern mining using larger machinery and equipment forces the miners to take low-grade waste rock in with the ore material, resulting in dilution of the grade. However, modern mining and assaying allows the delineation of lower-grade bulk tonnage mineralisation, within which the gold is invisible to the naked eye. In these cases, veining is the subordinate host to mineralisation and may only be an indicator of the presence of metasomatism of the wall-rocks which contains the low-grade mineralisation. For this reason, veins within hydrothermal gold deposits are no longer the exclusive target of mining, and in some cases gold mineralization is restricted entirely to the altered wall rocks within which entirely barren quartz veins are hosted. New gold rush hits California after heavy winter rains

02:33
The discovery of gold in 19th century California brought gold diggers rushing to the state, hoping to strike it rich. Recently, heavy rain in California has washed away tonnes of gravel that hid the gold in stream beds, exposing the gold and drawing back the prospectors. Ancient Mining Techniques[History Documentary]HD

45:14
Ancient mining techniques go well back into our history – well back into ourprehistory, in fact. As we progressed through the Stone Age, with more and more sophisticated tools and weapons being designed and developed, so too,our need for more and better raw materials for these implements. Stone and flint led to copper, then bronze, gold, silver, iron… all in the name of progress, war, technology, vanity or greed. In fact, it’s ironic (pun intended) that the substance prized and even mined by our ancient ancestors for some of the earliest stone tools and weapons – flint – was later a hindrance encountered by Classical miners – who were in many cases also Classical minors – in gold mining galleries described by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD as “thought to be the hardest thing that exists, except greed for gold, which is the most stubborn of all things. Discover JOHANNESBURG, The Richest & Most Developed City in Africa

06:21
Johannesburg, South Africa's biggest city and capital of Gauteng(a Sotho word meaning “Place of Gold”), one of the nine provinces of South Africa. Johannesburg, began as a 19th-century gold-mining settlement. Its sprawling Soweto township was once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Mandela’s former residence is now the Mandela House museum. Central Johannesburg, the commercial and financial heart of South Africa, is laid out in a rectangular grid pattern that is unchanged from the first city survey in 1886. Streets are narrow and cast into shadow by high-rise concrete blocks, creating an almost tunnel-like effect. Gold Rush Historical Photos

01:14
Major gold rushes took place in the 19th century in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, South Africa and the United States. While gold mining itself was unprofitable for most diggers and mine owners, some people made large fortunes, and the merchants and transportation facilities made large profits.

GOLD RUSH AT OROVILLE DAM! BLM SAYS "KEEP OUT" - FLOOD GOLD RUSH In NORCAL

08:38
SOURCE: SFGATE ✔When asking seasoned miners about this year’s so-called gold rush in Northern California, it can be a challenge to obtain trustworthy information. ✔“People who are smart don’t advertise what they’ve found,” said Bob Van Camp, better known as “Digger Bob.” “If you’re finding nuggets in an area, you don’t tell anyone about it; I’ve made that mistake before.” ✔After all, if you’re a professional miner looking to make your fortune, it’s the nuggets you’re after. Flakes and dust are milquetoast – and altogether worthless – compared to heavy chunks of the shiny yellow stuff. ✔Northern California was pelted with record rainfall this winter, and miners predicted that once all the water washed away, gold would be left in its wake. It appears that their predictions are panning out.“Folks are finding more gold — ‘flood gold’ — than usual this year,” said Diana Clayton, president of the Shasta Miners & Prospectors Association, which owns seven claims throughout Northern California and boasts about 350 members. ✔“Many of our members have been mining for decades,” Clayton said. “They really know the area. And they know there’s been changes.”Bryant Shock, co-owner of Gold Prospecting Adventures in Jamestown, Calif., estimates that there’s been a quarter increase in professional miners heading up north – a sure sign of a legitimate gold rush, he says. ✔So too, Shock has seen bigger chunks of the mineral unearthed this season than in recent years, and not just near streams and rivers. Heavy rainfall triggers slides, he explained, which create cutouts in the hills and deposit small bits of gold in gulches and ravines. ✔“I’ve heard of people walking along, kicking the dirt and finding a piece of gold,” Clayton added. She said a Shasta Miner recently uncovered a nugget half the size of her pinkie finger – that’s a biggie. ✔Clayton wasn’t about to let SFGATE in on the location of the prized chunk – “That’s like asking fishermen where they found their best catch!” – but she did mention the prospects surrounding the Oroville Dam, where miners believe gold is buried in the bedrock and dirt washed away when the spillway flooded. ✔“There’s good gold in that gravel,” said professional miner Mike Abernathy definitively. ✔ Aspiring miners should take pause before heading to Oroville with a pan in their hand and visions of riches on their minds. The region surrounding the spillway is completely inaccessible to the public, and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) vehemently refutes the treasure hunters’ chatter. The river channels affected by the flooding were extensively mined during the late 19th and 20th centuries, and having high flood waters would not expose additional gold,” a BLM spokesperson told SFGATE over email. ✔Nonetheless, a miner can dream — that’s what this gold hunting business is all about anyway. Odds of making a fortune in the goldfields of California are slim-to-none, but that’s not really the point. ✔Said Clayton, “It’s about having fun and maybe getting lucky.” SFGATE ARTICLE: http://m.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/A-mini-gold-rush-has-descended-on-Northern-11303830.php#1 DON'T YOU JUST LOVE MY SUPER AWESOME CHANNEL? A Ghost Town with a Freemason Temple - Victor, CO

19:03
Victor is a ghost city in Teller County, Colorado, United States. Gold was discovered in Victor in the late 19th century, an omen of the future of the town. With Cripple Creek, the mining district became the second largest gold mining district in the country and realized approximately $10 billion of mined gold in 2010 dollars. It reached its peak around the turn of the century when there were about 18,000 residents in the town (The population was 397 at the 2010 census.). Depleted ore in mines, labor strife and the exodus of miners during World War I caused a steep decline in the city's economy, from which it has never recovered. There is a resumed mining effort on Battle Mountain. Part I: We make a visit to an 1876 North Queensland Goldfields site, where we try our hand at some fine gold prospecting the old fashioned way with a replica 19th Century Gold Cradle (rocker box), while Mrs NQ hunts the creeks with her AT Pro. Not much gold to be had, just a half a dozen specks, but Mrs NQ comes up with a beautiful Victorian Silver Shilling and a Victorian Penny, left behind by the 'Old Timers' from among the water and cobbles in the creek bed. Another find provides a direct link to the Chinese miners on the field, and the opium trade. Thanks for watching and subscribing, please visit our blog www.nqexplorers.com

Grant's Getaways: Sumpter Dredge

04:10
Gold mining once ruled the lands of Eastern Oregon -- a moment in the state's history that faded by turn of the 19th century - During a brief rebound in the gold mining industry in the 1930s (and continuing until 1954), monstrous gold-dredging machines ravaged the Sumpter River Valley floor. Square-bowed and built of steel and wood and iron, the Sumpter dredge (one of three dredges that worked in the valley) lifted and sifted the terrain, reaping a golden harvest worth an estimated $12 million. These days the dredge is an Oregon State Park that invites visitors to go aboard and explore its nooks and crannies with guided tour leaders who give perspective on a distant time and activity that left lasting marks on the Sumpter area.

Would YOU Crawl Into This Small, Dangerous, Abandoned Mine Entrance?

14:22
The entrance to the Golden Gem Mine is so severely eroded that one must crawl into it on one's stomach for about seven feet. To make matters worse, there is a substantial collapse just inside the entrance. Despite all that, I recently gained entry and explored and documented the entire abandoned Golden Gem Mine. The mine was a gold mine and dates back to the mid to late 1800s. It has a lot of character to it as it passes through different strata of rocks. It also has a good example of classic mine timbering just inside the portal. I hope you enjoy this exploration of a 19th-century mine. Video footage filmed in spring 2010.
