In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. Armed robbers stole $8.5 million dollars worth of gold from a Canadian-owned mine refinery in western Mexico on Tuesday. The robbery occurred at the facility of Canadian company McEwen in Mexico's Sinaloa state on early Tuesday, Noroeste reported. Mexican authorities said the robbery was likely an inside job, CHEK reported Eight men armed with rifles entered the mine and reportedly handcuffed two workers at the mine before taking the keys to various doors from one of the workers. They were able to enter the vault as the door was left open since the day before, according to Noroeste. McEwen Mining said an estimated 900 kilograms of gold-bearing concentrate containing approximately 7,000 ounces of gold were stolen from the refinery. The amount of stolen gold equals to one-sixth of its annual production, according to teleSUR. McEwen Mining said its insurance policy was insufficient to cover the loss. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. So, you want to know how to find a specific abandoned mine or abandoned mines in general? We will dive into answering that question in this video by taking you along on our search for an abandoned mine that took us two years to locate! Along the way you’ll have the opportunity to observe the tools and techniques we use to find the historic mines that appear in our videos and you will, hopefully, be able to incorporate some of what we have learned over the years (and are now sharing with you) into your own search for mines and mine sites. I will cover how we find out about mines in the first place, the research that we do, the online resources we utilize, the technology we take out in the field with us and more. Whether you are a historian or a gold miner looking for promising sites to file claims on or a mine explorer interested in documenting our industrial heritage or are just curious what is around the area where you live, this video will, hopefully, have something useful for you. Some of you will obviously already know many, if not all, of these search techniques. However, this video is intended to have something for everyone – from the novice to the experienced mine hunter. Many people have no interest at all in finding lost mines, but enjoying seeing them and the efforts of others to find them, and so I have included the footage of the mine when we finally found it for that demographic as well. Fortunately, we don’t normally have to work this hard to find an abandoned mine, but if our search for this mine, although quite unpleasant and frustrating at times, was useful to someone else out there, then it was worth it. Happy hunting! Here are the links for the websites mentioned in this video: https://thediggings.com/ caltopo.com http://www.mylandmatters.org/ http://www.westernmininghistory.com/ https://www.google.com/earth/ https://goldrushexpeditions.com/ ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L If you like these videos on exploring abandoned mines, please subscribe! https://goo.gl/yjPxH1 Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, guess what? We have fun doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a hundred years, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

In fact the ancient Greeks believe that gold was a combination of water and sunlight because it was found in rivers. Place of mining, it involved swirling water in circles in shallow metal pans with soil from the riverbed leaving gold as it was washed away. Back in 1200 BC , enterprising early miners would also use water power to propel gold bearing sand over the hind of a sheep, which would trap the tiny but heavy flakes of gold. When the fleece said it absorbed all the water it could, the Golden Fleece would then be hung up to dry and beaten until all the gold had fallen off. Hence, the legend of the Golden Fleece. A number of early civilizations, including Chile and Mexico, used a variation of this technique called winnowing, in which soil was bounced on woolen blankets, allowing the wind to blow by the light sand and thus freeing the gold.

05/08/2012 The site of a new ghost town in New Mexico has been chosen, and it will bring hundreds of new jobs to the state. The research firm Pegasus Global Holdings announced today that Hobbs is the best place for the state-of-the-art project. It will create a $1 billion site about the size of a town of 35,000 people complete with homes, streets and businesses but no residents. Instead of being a place to live, it will be used for scientists to test renewable energy innovations, traffic systems, next-generation wireless networks and smart-grid security systems. The company said it picked Hobbs because of its open spaces and infrastructure. The test town will provide 1,500 construction jobs and 350 full-time jobs. Groundbreaking is set for June for the privately funded project by Pegasus Global to be known as CITE, the Center for Innovation, Testing and Evaluation. "Many people do not know, but it is a very famous mining district in Mexico. It goes back 250 years to the Spanish colonization times to the point that one of the richest gold and silver mines, the Rosario, was set up in that district. We know by fact and historically that mine produced close to 4 million ounces of gold and 100 million ounces of silver. That is the reason why Fresnillo, which is one of the largest silver producers in the world, controls a lot of concessions in the district." States Marcio Fonseca, President & CEO of Goldplay Exploration Ltd. (TSXV: GPLY | OTCQB: GLYXF), in an interview with InvestorIntel Corp. CEO Tracy Weslosky. Tracy Weslosky: I am a serious gold bug. I appreciate how amazing the gold and silver resources and potential market that you have in Mexico. Let us start there. What is happening with investors right now with their interest in Mexican gold and silver? Marcio Fonseca: In my opinion what is happening is that investors got a bit worried about the Mexican market because of the new government. There was some news recently which created a bit of volatility in the market, which I believe now are completely clear in their minds that Mexico is a mining country. There will not be big changes in the mining code for the short-term and medium-term. Consider gold and silver where the price is now. Probably silver one of the lowest prices I have seen so far. The opportunity that you see today at the lower price you can see a turnaround in 2019. I see a great opportunity for any investor to get exposure to gold and silver players in Mexico as a low-cost mining country. Tracy Weslosky: Okay. Again, just in case I did not mention this, I am a big gold and silver bug. Speaking of gold play and news, let us jump right into it. You just announced that one of your directors, Laura Diaz, had stepped down as a director to become the next General Director of Mines in Mexico. I thought that was pretty significant news for the type of players you are attracting on your board. Can you tell us how this might affect you and what this means? Marcio Fonseca: It means a lot to me. I have known Laura Diaz for more than 15 years. She was my lawyer when I was an investment banker and she helped me in many transactions in Mexico, mining transactions. She is well known in the Canadian markets; many transactions as well. It means a lot in a way that you have a person working for the government that understands the mining business in North America, that can help us to get more comfortable with the system and to modernize the system. Of course I need to congratulate her. It is a great achievement in her career being named by the President of Mexico to be the new Director of Mines. Tracy Weslosky: One of our analysts wrote that it is a good time to be looking at gold and silver and then proceeded to write about you and in particular featured the Rosario Mining District in Mexico. Can you comment on this mining district and Goldplay’s portfolio in this district? Marcio Fonseca: Of course. Many people do not know, but it is a very famous mining district in Mexico. It goes back 250 years to the Spanish colonization times to the point that one of the richest gold and silver mines, the Rosario, was set up in that district. We know by fact and historically that mine produced close to 4 million ounces of gold and 100 million ounces of silver. But for some reason the government doesn't give dairy farms a way to recruit foreign workers legally, so most feel forced to hire illegal immigrants. This makes the farms and their workers easy targets for immigration authorities looking to fill deportation quotas. We went to upstate New York to try to understand the cat and mouse game going on between dairy farms and immigration authorities. We found a lot of wasted taxpayer money, racial profiling, and a broken system that unnecessarily treats family farmers and hardworking immigrants like criminals. http://www.illuminatisilver.com Today is Monday 26th November 2018 and we are just alerting you briefly to keep an eye on what is happening in Mexico. Fears that Incoming President Andres Obrador may oversee the tightening of regulations on the mining industry in Mexico which include: • empowering the Ministry of Economy to declare certain zones as not viable for mining • revoking permits and existing concessions that have a negative social impact Last week Morgan Stanley downgraded mining stocks on concerns that Mexico’s new congress is considering as many as 11 bills or resolutions that could materially impact mining companies operating in the country. The first nine bills tabled in congress could impact Mexican miners’ Ebitda, Fresnillo, Penoles and Grupo Mexico according to the Morgan Stanley report. These companies each lost between 4 and 12% of their stock-market value and Fresnillo, which is listed in London, saw its biggest decline in five years. The implications for silver prices are initially difficult to ascertain until more details are known as to the likelihood of these bills passing. However, the implication seems pretty clear - Mexico being the largest silver mine production country producing approximately 5,600 Metric tonnes per annum or practically 20% of global mine production, clearly signifies that any barriers to production will only prove positive for the price longer term. Much clearly depends on the extent to which these companies are directly affected, but those considering investing in mining stocks should be especially cautious but also mindful that markets do tend to ‘overdo’ bad news and so potential buying opportunities can exist if the run on stocks is overdone. We must of course balance this with other countries and companies gradually increasing their output, especially if they are able to lower their costs should lower oil prices persist. However if these regulations do come into force and are adopted elsewhere, then that would have quite a positive impact on the Silver price. This is our second video in our five part series of our trip to Kenya to install a shaker table to help eliminate the use of mercury by the smalls scale gold miners. We met with Julius who is the president of the MICA gold mining cooperative and donated a shaker table to MICA to show the miners a different technology for gold concentration other than the use of mercury. Once the shaker table was set up the miners were amazed! The shaker table on average recovered 2-3 times more gold from the same material they had been processing with their blanket/burlap sluices and mercury use. The table can also process the material up to 10 times faster than the blanket/burlap sluices. The result being in some cases 30 times more gold for the miners in the same amount of processing time. Stay tuned for more videos of our trip to Kenya. For more information about our shaker table or any of our other products email us at [email protected] or give us a call at 360-595-4445. http://www.mbmmllc.com

Gold fever is sweeping across South America. Nowhere is it more lethal than in Colombia, where the gold rush has become a new axle in Colombia's civil war. Turf wars are erupting between paramilitaries, and leftist rebel groups fighting to take control of mining regions. It's fueling an old ideological conflict and has displacing hundreds of people. Helicopter raids by the Colombian Army on small community mining collectives have become commonplace, and the Colombian government is accused of targeting poor workers to protect big business interests, and operating with impunity from human rights violations. Thousands have fled their homes where land is violently contested, and others live in fear they'll be removed from their land, arrested, or killed. The multinationals are flooding in too. With gold now worth around $1,500 an ounce, everyone is getting in on the act, including North American mining companies. Colombia's pro-business mentality has seen arbitrary concessions by the state sold to multinational companies, often on indigenous land. Fault Lines traveled to Colombia to speak to the people caught in the middle. The rural workers and artisan miners who've mined for generations, and some whose ancestors were enslaved during the first gold rush centuries ago. Others are former coca farmers, put out of work by the US-led Plan Colombia. U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich and Tom Udall sat down with us last fall to talk about the Gold King Mine Spill. This week, we hear their proposals for addressing mining safety in New Mexico and other Western states.
For its numerous desirable qualities as: investment asset, money, and unique industrial commodity, silver has been the favorite monetary metal throughout history. Why has Silver recently fallen so far behind it’s richer cousin, Gold? Despite being mined at only 10 times the rate of gold, silver has fallen to one seventieth of gold’s price, a ratio that is becoming increasingly unsustainable going forward. In the next leg of the current secular bull market, how much faster is silver likely to advance vs. gold? Greg Crowe, President and CEO of Silver One Resources, traces silver’s historical roots and future direction, especially in the light of major current events that are combining to set up a dramatic rush for silver in the months and years ahead, Crowe outlines the benefits of supplementing bullion holdings with mining ownership, to dramatically increase reward potential during the next bull market moves. IN THIS INTERVIEW: ================== Why Silver? —————— Factors driving historical interest in silver: "people's money", uses, typical action vs gold in a run up? Silver as a Guardian of Wealth the main monetary metal until the late 1800’s became the “poorer cousin” to gold Now an industrial commodity Anti-bacterial conductivity reflectance Gold:Silver Price Ratio ————— - Historical Gold:Silver price ratio was 15:1, progression over the last century at 40:1 and now 70:1. Why gold:silver ratio so skewed from historical norm? During recent crises, gold:silver ratio went to 35:1, expect that to happen again, so silver should outperform gold price increase 2:1 in the next run-up. Physical silver:gold mining ration about 10:1, so a real imbalance keeps building that should drive silver higher. Current Events That Will Drive Silver Higher? ————— -Recent global economy, policy actions, and world events impact on direction for silver? -Weakened global currencies make US Dollar look stronger only in comparison, but it’s also weaker. -US Debt is monstrous burden -Trump signifies return to infrastructure spending, increased debt highly unlikely to be paid for despite increased industry, jobs. -Endgame? When will runaway US and global sovereign debt cause people to fly to safety of gold & silver? Individual awareness & preparedness for portfolio positioning to take advantage of likely upcoming movement in gold & silver? ————— Read voraciously: financial papers and articles on recession Kitco.com: metals analyses & commentary Stockwatch Watch the Gold:silver ratio Study good mining stocks: what is your taste for risk/reward? Mining stocks tend to outperform bullion during a bull market. SilverOne's mission and value Story... ———— Silver One created in the runup in the silver markets, came from First Mining Finance, formerly of First Majestic Development & Exploration silver co based mainly in Mexico First Mining Finance new focus on gold, so put assets into Silver One Silver One exploring properties in Mexico, looking for new assets as well to grow. visit www.silverone.com, new young company, which is typically a good time to participate in the growth of a junior mining company. Despite Swaziland's small size, it boasts more hectares of land dedicated to growing Cannabis than all of India. It is also home to Swazi Gold, the legendary sativa strain. Hamilton Morris travels to Swaziland hoping to chemically analyze the cannabinoids present in some of the local strains. Instead, he finds a country steeped in political corruption and economic turmoil. Cannabis is viewed by many growers, users, and politicians as a drug that will cause insanity, but it may be Swaziland's only hope for economic stability.
