Lead Ore Milling 1934 US Bureau of Mines
Nestled deep within the eastern Ozarks is an area known as the Old Lead Belt; it is a major part of the great Southeast Missouri lead district, the premier lead mining district of the world. The mining industry in this area has played an important role in Missouri's economic and social fabric for more than 280 years. St. Joseph Lead Co. is one of the major corporate enterprises that came to Missouri to mine lead. Lead and zinc production involved crushing and grinding the mined rock to standard sizes and separating the ore. This left behind piles of leftover rock called tailings that covered 4,000 acres in southeastern Cherokee County. These wastes were also a source of contamination. Lead, zinc, and cadmium from the tailings leached into the shallow ground water, contaminating local wells, and runoff moved contaminants into nearby streams and rivers. Wind also blew fine metal-bearing dust (from tailings piles and roads made of tailings) into the air, spreading the contamination to nearby non-mined areas. Radon gas from the mining operations was detected in the air around Galena. During the 1980's, this area was considered one of the most environmentally blighted in the nation. Some of the cleanup efforts are funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund. The EPA began working in the area in the early 1980's and work is ongoing. The EPA divided the Cherokee County Site into six subsites that correspond to six general mining locations, including the areas around Galena, Baxter Springs, and Treece, Kansas. Because the area in and around Galena had some of the worst contamination, early cleanup efforts were centered there. Chief among these was the provision of safe water supply for rural residents whose wells had been contaminated. Two new wells were constructed in the deep aquifer, and a new rural water district was formed that currently provides over 500 households with a long-term source of clean drinking water. From 1997 to 1999, contaminated soil was removed from 602 residential properties in Galena and replaced with clean backfill and grass sod or seed; fifty additional properties were remediated in 2000 and 2001. Remediation of residential soils has been completed in Treece and is ongoing in Baxter Springs. Cleanup continues at other sites in southeastern Kansas. For more information, check the EPA Region 7's website: http://www.epa.gov/region07/index.html . It does not matter if a person breathes in, swallows, or absorbs lead particles, the health effects are the same; however, the body absorbs higher levels of lead when it is breathed in. Within our bodies, lead is absorbed and stored in our bones, blood, and tissues. It does not stay there permanently, rather it is stored there as a source of continual internal exposure. Lead poisoning can happen if a person is exposed to very high levels of lead over a short period of time. When this happens, a person may feel: Abdominal pain, Constipated, Excessively tired, Headache, Irritable, Loss of appetite, Memory loss, Pain or tingling in the hands and/or feet and Weak. Because these symptoms may occur slowly or may be caused by other things, lead poisoning can be easily overlooked as their cause. Being exposed to high levels of lead may cause anemia, weakness, and kidney and brain damage. Very high lead exposure can cause death. A person who is exposed to lead over time may feel: Abdominal pain, Constipated, Depressed, Distracted, Forgetful, Irritable, Nauseous/Sick. People with prolonged exposure to lead may also be at risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, and reduced fertility. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have determined that lead is probably cancer-causing in humans. This clip is from the 1934 US Bureau of Mines film (made in cooperation with the St. Joseph Lead Company), THE STORY OF LEAD MINING AND MILLING. The entire film shows mining and milling operations in Southeast Missouri after diamond drills have located a lead vein. The film also shows the dairy, school, hospital, and offices of the St. Joseph Lead Company. The entire film is available at the US National Archives in Maryland.

Missouri Lead Company provided milk to children and adults, 1934
This short clip shows the dairy owned and run by of the St. Joseph Lead Company, in Missouri providing subsidized milk to the children and adults in its mining district. Until the 1970s, it was common for the lead industry to providing free or low-cost milk to their workers. For over a century, milk was thought to counteract lead poisoning. However, scientific studies have now shown that milk should not be regarded as a prophylactic agent in a workplace setting. Wrote Dr. Robert A, Kehoe in JAMA in 1955 "... The fault is that [it was] often used in lieu of the adequate measures of environmental control that are dictated by considerations of sound industrial hygiene and by decent regard for the safety and welfare of human beings. It is to be expected that industrial management should favor and be unduly impressed by the magic of simple and relatively inexpensive medical prophylactic procedures rather than face the stern and often costly necessities of safe process design and plant engineering." In his article, MISUSE OF EDATHAMIL CALCIUM-DISODIUM FOR PROPHYLAXIS OF LEAD POISONING, Robert A. Kehoe, M.D., Cincinnati http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/157/4/341.full.pdf ). Human impacts on Biodiversity | Biology for All | FuseSchool
Biodiversity is the variety of life. There are thought to be 8.7 million species on planet Earth. And, as we saw in this video, biodiversity is of utmost importance to humans. The loss of one key species can have a detrimental impact on many levels; from other species of animals to plants to the physical environment, as shown by wolves. Human activities are reducing biodiversity. Our future depends upon maintaining a good level of biodiversity, and so we need to start taking measures to try and stop the reduction. In this video we are going to look at how humans are negatively impacting biodiversity. As the world population has grown from 1.5 billion in 1900 to nearly 7.5 billion people today, unsurprisingly the land use has changed. Habitats have been destroyed in favour of agriculture, forestry, fishing, urbanisation and manufacturing. Unsurprisingly, habitat loss has greatly reduced the species richness. Habitat fragmentation has also meant that populations have been split into smaller subunits, which then when faced with challenging circumstances have not been able to adapt and survive. After habitat loss, overharvesting has had a huge effect on biodiversity. Humans historically exploit plant and animal species for short-term profit. If a resource is profitable, we develop more efficient methods of harvesting it, inevitably depleting the resource. As is currently happening with fishing and logging. The exploited species then needs protection. The difficulty is that the demand then outstrips the supply, and so the resource value rises. This increases the incentive to extract the resource and leads to the final collapse of the population. As happened with whales, elephants, spotted cats, cod, tuna and many more species. Human activities are polluting the air and water. Toxic discharge into the water from industrial processes unsurprisingly has a negative effect on the local aquatic species by killing, weakening or affecting their ability to reproduce. Phosphorous and nitrogen in fertilisers run-off agricultural fields and pass into rivers. These surplus nutrients cause algae to bloom, which then starves other aquatic species of oxygen and light, causing them to die. Acid rain is one consequence of humans polluting the air. This causes lakes and water bodies to become more acidic, killing off fish, molluscs, amphibians and many other species. Huge impact humans have had on planet Earth is the introduction of alien species to habitats. In fact, it is estimated that on any given day there are 3000 species in transit aboard ocean-going vessels! Alien species can cause problems in a number of ways… pause the video and have a look. Throughout the earth’s history there have been periods of rapid climate change, that have led to mass extinction events. We are currently in a period of fluctuating climate, but nearly all scientists agree that human activities, like burning fossil fuels, are speeding up global warming. We don’t know how much climate change is going to affect biodiversity in future, but it’s predicted to be huge. Loss of sea ice and ocean acidification are already causing huge reductions in biodiversity. Climate change alters temperature and weather patterns, with changing patterns of rainfall and drought expected to have significant impacts on biodiversity. So there we have a selection of human-related impacts on biodiversity. There are much more, which a quick search on the internet will bring up. Data suggests 11 deaths linked to Hazelwood mine fire. With Associate Professor Adrian Barnett.
ELIZABETH JACKSON: An Australian researcher says it's highly likely that at least 11 people have died this year as a direct result of Victoria's Hazelwood mine fire. The research examined data dating back to 2009 and it found there was an increase in deaths after the fire, in neighbouring suburbs. The author says the fire is also likely to have also caused many serious health conditions, some of which will take time to develop symptoms. Sarah Sedghi reports. SARAH SEDGHI: In February this year, a large and relentless fire broke out at the Hazelwood open cut mine south east of Melbourne. It burned for more than a month, blanketing the town of Morwell in ash and smoke. Some people left home and businesses slowed. But Adrian Barnett from the Queensland University of Technology says the most serious consequences were from the pollution caused by the fire. ADRIAN BARNETT: They were extremely high levels; they're the sorts of levels that you get in industrial cities in China. And those people were at those levels or near about for two months. So you're kind of getting the exposure that you possibly would have got over five, ten years, crammed into two months. SARAH SEDGHI: By examining four years worth of data on death rates, he says the fire is likely to be responsible for the spike in fatalities. ADRIAN BARNETT: I was able to examine whether the monthly numbers of deaths during the fire February to March this year were unusually high. And my estimate was there's an 89 per cent probability that the death rate during that time was higher than average and that was about a 15 per cent increase in deaths which translates to about 11 extra deaths for the four postcodes for the two months. SARAH SEDGHI: The data was collected from four suburbs closest to the fire. And he's expecting residents to develop serious ailments. ADRIAN BARNETT: I would fully expect there to be lots of other problems including increased admissions to hospitals for respiratory and cardiovascular events, increased asthma attacks, potentially problems with pregnant women including an increased risk of preterm birth and stillbirth. And then other consequences such as lung damage, asthma attacks. There's lots of things in the air pollution; there's lots of different gases, there's carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and then particular matter which can contain all sorts of nasties and heavy metals. SARAH SEDGHI: Professor Barnett is urging authorities to consider the health problems residents are currently suffering. ADRIAN BARNETT: What I've been looking at and what I think could be looked at straight away is the acute effects. So air pollution tends to have two effects - it either gets you straight away, so you breathe in the pollution and if you have enough of a dose the stress on your cardiovascular system can cause a heart attack instantly. Or if you've breathed in air and it's caused some long term damage and then that may lead to problems in the future that we might not see for years to come. So there are two different things going on. I think so far there's a plan to look at the long term effects, but I certainly think the short term effects deserve more attention. SARAH SEDGHI: A report into the fire found the relocation advice given to residents came too late and that the mine operator was not properly prepared to deal the fire. ELIZABETH JACKSON: Sarah Sedghi with that report.

The Events That Led to the American Civil War: Perspectives of 13 Historical Figures (1997)
Historians debating the origins of the American Civil War focus on the reasons why seven Southern states declared their secession from the Union and later joined to form the Confederate States of America (the "Confederacy"). About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060928859/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0060928859&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=9ed283485e24f3c6affbc532d22a0ff3 The main explanation is slavery, especially Southern anger at the attempts by Northern antislavery political forces to block the expansion of slavery into the western territories. Southern slave owners held that such a restriction on slavery would violate the principle of states' rights. Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 presidential election without being on the ballot in ten of the Southern states. His victory triggered declarations of secession by seven slave states of the Deep South, and their formation of the Confederate States of America, even months before Lincoln took office. Nationalists (in the North and elsewhere) refused to recognize the secessions, nor did any foreign government, and the U.S. government in Washington refused to abandon its forts that were in territory claimed by the Confederacy. War began in 1861 when Confederates attacked Fort Sumter, a major U.S. fortress in South Carolina, the state that had been the first to declare its independence. As a panel of historians emphasized in 2011, "while slavery and its various and multifaceted discontents were the primary cause of disunion, it was disunion itself that sparked the war."[1] States' rights and the tariff issue became entangled in the slavery issue, and were intensified by it.[2] Other important factors were party politics, abolitionism, Southern nationalism, Northern nationalism, expansionism, sectionalism, economics and modernization in the Antebellum period. The United States had become a nation of two distinct regions. The free states in New England, the Northeast, and the Midwest[3] had a rapidly growing economy based on family farms, industry, mining, commerce and transportation, with a large and rapidly growing urban population. Their growth was fed by a high birth rate and large numbers of European immigrants, especially British (in particular, Irish) and German. The South was dominated by a settled plantation system based on slavery. There was some rapid growth taking place in the Southwest, (e.g., Texas), based on high birth rates and high migration from the Southeast, but it had a much lower immigration rate from Europe. The South also had fewer large cities, and little manufacturing except in border areas. Slave owners controlled politics and economics, though about 70% of Southern whites owned no slaves and usually were engaged in subsistence agriculture. Overall, the Northern population was growing much more quickly than the Southern population, which made it increasingly difficult for the South to continue to influence the national government. By the time of the 1860 election, the heavily agricultural southern states as a group had fewer Electoral College votes than the rapidly industrializing northern states. Lincoln was able to win the 1860 Presidential election without even being on the ballot in ten Southern states. Southerners felt a loss of federal concern for Southern pro-slavery political demands, and their continued domination of the Federal government was threatened. This political calculus provided a very real basis for Southerners' worry about the relative political decline of their region due to the North growing much faster in terms of population and industrial output. In the interest of maintaining unity, politicians had mostly moderated opposition to slavery, resulting in numerous compromises such as the Missouri Compromise of 1820. After the Mexican-American War, the issue of slavery in the new territories led to the Compromise of 1850. While the compromise averted an immediate political crisis, it did not permanently resolve the issue of the Slave power (the power of slaveholders to control the national government on the slavery issue). Part of the 1850 compromise was the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, requiring that Northerners assist Southerners in reclaiming fugitive slaves, which many Northerners found to be extremely offensive. Amid the emergence of increasingly virulent and hostile sectional ideologies in national politics, the collapse of the old Second Party System in the 1850s hampered efforts of the politicians to reach yet one more compromise. The compromise that was reached (the 1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act) outraged too many northerners, and led to the formation of the Republican Party, the first major party with no appeal in the South. The industrializing North and agrarian Midwest became committed to the economic ethos of free-labor industrial capitalism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origins_of_the_American_Civil_War

Corn plantation with smelting plant in background STORYLINE: Dozens of police and plainclothes officers guarded a Chinese smelting plant in central Shaanxi on Wednesday, days after hundreds of villagers stormed the factory because more than 600 children from two nearby villages had been sickened by lead poisoning. The roads leading to the plant were lined with a heavy security presence. At least 615 of 731 children in two villages near the Dongling Lead and Zinc Smelting Company plant in Shaanxi province's Changqing town have tested positive for lead poisoning. Some had lead levels 10 times the level China considers safe. At the nearby Fengxiang County Hospital, 80 children had been admitted as of Wednesday for observation and treatment of lead poisoning. Police and plainclothes officers in the hospital followed journalists around and tried to prevent them from conducting interviews. The other village affected is Sunjianantou. Parents of a few hundred children were waiting for the results of tests on Tuesday for lead poisoning in a third village, Luobosi. On Monday, Dai Zhengshe, the mayor of Baoji city, which oversees Changqing, apologised to protesting villagers and said the smelting plant would not be allowed to open again until it met health standards, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. Angry villagers had torn down fences and blocked traffic outside the factory, enraged by the plant's defiance of an August 6 order to suspend operations, Xinhua said. Fighting between angry parents and scores of police broke out on Sunday, and trucks delivering coal to the plant were stoned. The mayor said the plant halted production only on Monday because of safety reasons. Authorities have promised to relocate hundreds of families within two years, Xinhua said, but residents were not reassured. Environmental problems have escalated as China's economy booms, sometimes prompting violent protests. THE RUGGED ROAD by David Roper
Our path may have obstacles, but God will lead us… A fishing buddy of mine told me about an alpine lake located high on the north flank of Jughandle Mountain here in Idaho. Rumor had it that large cutthroat trout lurked up there. My friend got a pencil and scrap of napkin and drew a map for me. Several weeks later I gassed up my truck and set out to follow his directions. His map put me on one of the worst roads I’ve ever driven! It was an old logging road that had been bulldozed through the forest and never regraded. Washouts, fallen timber, deep ruts, and large rocks battered my spine and bent the undercarriage of my truck. It took half a morning to reach my destination, and when I finally arrived I asked myself, “Why would a friend send me up a road like this?” But the lake was magnificent and the fish were indeed large and scrappy! My friend had put me on the right road—one I would have chosen myself and patiently endured had I known what I knew at the end. There is a faithful saying: “All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant” (Ps. 25:10). Some of God’s paths for us are rough and rugged, others tedious and boring, but all are filled with His love and faithfulness. When we come to the end of our journey and know what we then will know, we will say, “God’s path was best for me.” Read: Psalm 25:4-11 Text: Ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. - Jeremiah 6:16 Father, we don’t see the end of the road, but You do. We trust You for what we can’t see. We know that You are bringing us through it. Insight: In verse 8 of today’s reading, David describes the Lord as good and upright. What God’s character causes Him to do, however, is quite surprising. Rather than His holiness leading Him away from us—who are sinful and far from holy—His mercy leads Him to instruct us in His ways. Because we know God is good, we can trust Him. - J.R. Hudberg OUR DAILY BREAD October 17, 2015 http://odb.org/2015/10/17/the-rugged-road/

The Children Of Lead - Trailer
Mining and refining are key drivers of Peruvian economy, but it comes at the cost of the most vulnerable, poor young children being contaminated at alarming rates. The area has been called the "Slow Chernobyl" given the devasting environmental impact of the contamination. The Mantaro River, where Doe Run dumps its contaminated water, runs directly into the Amazon. The Amazon makes our oxygen! You can connect the dots! An American Company is responsible for a majority of this contamination. Ira Rennert, the owner of Doe Run Corporation refuses to clean up his copper smelting company in order to save a few dollars. Meanwhile he has built one of the biggest homes in Upper New York, costing over 500 million dollars. Dozens of Bathrooms and over 30 bedrooms. The cost for cleaning up Doe Run and saving children would be equivalent to cutting 6 bathrooms and 12 bedrooms in his mansion, but money is more powerful than humanity in this case. He also owns the company that owns Hummer, no big surprise there. Rennert was called "the biggest polluter in America" by Vanity Fair Magazine and was forced to clean up his act. However, Peru will not hold him to as high a standard because pockets are being lined and the economy counts on the influx of dollars he brings in. He is a shoe in for Mr Burns from the Simpsons, except this time its contaminating children with his foundry, not a Nuclear Power Plant. Evil comes in many forms, Ira Rennert is just another....

The Civil War, Part I: Crash Course US History #20
In which John Green ACTUALLY teaches about the Civil War. In part one of our two part look at the US Civil War, John looks into the causes of the war, and the motivations of the individuals who went to war. The overarching causes and the individual motivations were not always the same, you see. John also looks into why the North won, and whether that outcome was inevitable. The North's industrial and population advantages are examined, as are the problems of the Confederacy, including its need to build a nation at the same time it was fighting a war. As usual, John doesn't get much into the actual battle by battle breakdown. He does talk a little about the overarching strategy that won the war, and Grant's plan to just overwhelm the South with numbers. Grant took a lot of losses in the latter days of the war, but in the end, it did lead to the surrender of the South. War & Expansion: Crash Course US History #17
In which John Green teaches you about the Mexican-American War in the late 1840s, and the expansion of the United States into the western end of North America. In this episode of Crash Course, US territory finally reaches from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific Ocean. After Oregon was secured from the UK and the southwest was ceded by Mexico, that is. Famous Americans abound in this episode, including James K Polk (Young Hickory, Napoleon of the Stump), Martin Van Buren, Zachary Taylor, and Winfield Scott. You'll also learn about the California Gold Rush of 1848, and California's admission as a state, which necessitated the Compromise of 1850. Once more slavery is a crucial issue. Something is going to have to be done about slavery, I think. Maybe it will come to a head next week. Silicosis 1940 from the film Men and Dust, Tri-State Survey Committee (shortened version)
A shortened version of this film that was shown at the conclusion of the 1940 Tri-State Silicosis Conference in Joplin, Missouri, a gathering of industry and labor leaders to investigate and highlight the danger of silicosis, a debilitating lung disease from inhaling the dust. The entire film is posted to my YouTube channel. Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins attended the conference at the Connor Hotel, as did Dr. Alice Hamilton. The film was produced by the noted Great Depression era photographer Sheldon Dick.. Dick's film is surprisingly experimental with a unsettling score and a dramatic narration that has a jarring effect on the viewer. It is an important piece of occupational and environmental health history because of its haunting advocacy for the welfare of the region's miners and their families and its stark images of the men who worked the Tri-State Mining District during the Depression era. Men and Dust is an exposé based on the findings of the Tri-State Survey. It depicts the lead and zinc mining communities at the junction of Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, and their problems of survival. In the film we see the fight led by the Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers Union for improved mine owners efforts to eliminate silicosis, lead poisoning, and tuberculosis. Near the end of the film is a call for a national workers compensation system to deal with occupational disease, Federal government enforcement of improved working conditions, proper hospital facilities and safe housing. For a summary of the Tri-State Silicosis Conference, go to http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/128/. For a detailed look at the silicosis problem, read the wonderful book Deadly Dust: Silicosis and the On-Going Struggle to Protect Workers' Health by David Rosner and Gerald Markowitz, 2nd edition 2006 -- go to http://www.press.umich.edu/pdf/9780472031108-fm.pdf for a short introduction. Sadly, today two million workers are still exposed to potentially hazardous levels of silica dust, mostly in the construction and sandblasting industries. OSHA's current silica dust rule, issued in 1971, allows workers to be exposed at levels far exceeding those considered safe. Almost two years ago OSHA submitted a proposal to the White House to update the standard that protects workers from exposure to crystalline silica dust. Although the review should have concluded after 45 days, the proposal remained at the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB). A copy of this film is available in the US National Archive film collection in College Park, MD. Thanks to the Historic Joplin YouTube Channel for posting this film in November 2011.

Yeah pretty cool huh. I used a 12volt battery capable of providing around 450 amps, although when first lit consumes about 6 amps, this gradually drops until the lead gets so thin it splits. The Thickness of the pacer lead is 0.5mm.

Spanish/Nat A growth in poor health has forced Peru's government to convert motorists in Lima to unleaded fuel. The capital, home to more than six (m) million people, is fast becoming one of Latin America's most polluted. Poor health, including cancer, is plaguing the inhabitants exposed daily to the poisonous effects of leaded fuel. Abancay Avenue, in the heart of Lima, is choking. Thousands of vehicles daily spew toxic fumes from leaded fuel. The six-and-a-half million people in this city must live with the consequences - cancer and poor respiratory health are rife. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "What we want to do with this is to reduce the impact on health. That is, the quantity of lead. Both in areas of high traffic density where we have not only the population at risk, but also many occupational activities which are at risk, because they are continually inhaling all these lead fumes. SUPER CAPTION: Doctor Maria del Carmen Gastanaga, General Director of environmental health The lead in fuel is harmful because it does not dissolve in the air once it has left the exhaust. When inhaled it gathers in the blood, causing serious damage to health. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "It is very important with children to try and link, especially with irritative illnesses in the wind pipes, all those illnesses which are sometimes diagnosed as asthma, to the (highly polluted) places where they live. We have cases of chronic illnesses, which can be emphysema in adults. We also have a weakening of the immunity system, a very small response of this system in people who inhale these (lead) particles. SUPER CAPTION: Doctor Maria del Carmen Gastanaga, General Director of environmental health The government announced earlier this week an action plan before things get any worse. The Organisation of Ibero-American States is backing it. The ministries of Transport, Health and Energy must come up with a strategy in the next thirty days to transform a whole city's fuel from leaded to unleaded SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The main source of pollution, especially regarding particles, are created by vehicles, for the bad state of repair these vehicles are in, in Lima and also in the provinces, and industrial emissions. SUPER CAPTION: Katia Figueroa, Engineer It is not yet known what the response from Peru's fuel suppliers will be or the anticipated cost of the project. But Lima's air is already commonly referred to as the great rubbish pit. It is already too late for many who suffered the cancerous effects of leaded fuel. An attempt is underway to ensure it won't be too late for many more. H.E.A.T. Report: (Lead is Poisoning our Kids)
Consequences of Housing Disinvestment and Associated Health Risks To find out more, and how to identify neighborhoods where low income and minority residents face increased odds of toxic exposure download the HEAT Report at www.WeAreWyandotte.com In 1910 Baltimore Mayor Barry Mahool said “Blacks should be quarantined in isolated slums in order to reduce the incidence of civil disturbance, to prevent the spread of communicable disease into the nearby white neighborhoods, and to protect the property values among the white majority.” This practice hasn’t necessarily stopped. One of the lingering effects of systemic disinvestment in housing as a result of redlining has been the decimation of housing stock in these redlined areas. Central city housing has aged and declined. Newer replacement housing stock has not been built. Old homes have been demolished with the remnants left in the foundations of the properties to bleed into the soil. The homes that are left, are occupied by our community. There’s lead in the water in Michigan, and there is lead in the walls, and in the soil of Wyandotte County Kansas. Older homes are more likely to contain lead paint, which was not outlawed until the late 70’s. These lower value properties most at risk for lead paint exposures overlap to a very large extent the areas of greater health risk identified on the high-risk population and Opportunity maps. You can find maps of residential areas containing lead paint and more at www.WeAreWyandotte.com Lead and proximity to other environmental health hazards is predominantly impacting our communities of color near the industrial areas and in areas with disinvestment and poor housing stock. The HEAT Report leverages the history of policies that have shaped the make-up of today’s neighborhood and highlights ongoing injustices and extraction of wealth. You can draw a bright line from redlining, through neighborhood disinvestment, to current residential housing conditions and identify those neighborhoods where children are most likely to be lead poisoned. The end result is an area of severely depressed residential properties, where the remaining residents are largely those lacking the means to leave and the resources to deal with the health effects of potential exposures. The history of Kansas City is, in large measure, the history of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers and their role in transportation, commerce, and civic life. The history of Kansas City is not unique. What happened in Wyandotte County Kansas happened all across the country. Low-income and minority residents have been historically excluded from the decision processes that place their neighborhoods at greater risk of toxic exposures. Environmental law provides legal means to empower these residents to seek remedy. Environmental justice, as defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is “the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.” You are Wyandotte To find out more, and how to identify neighborhoods where low income and minority residents face increased odds of toxic exposure download the HEAT Report at www.WeAreWyandotte.com

The Election of 1860 & the Road to Disunion: Crash Course US History #18
In which John Green teaches you about the election of 1860. As you may remember from last week, things were not great at this time in US history. The tensions between the North and South were rising, ultimately due to the single issue of slavery. The North wanted to abolish slavery, and the South wanted to continue on with it. It seemed like a war was inevitable, and it turns out that it was. But first the nation had to get through this election. You'll learn how the bloodshed in Kansas, and the truly awful Kansas-Nebraska Act led directly to the decrease in popularity of Stephen Douglas, the splitting of the Democratic party, and the unlikely victory of a relatively inexperienced politician from Illinois, Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln's election would lead directly to the secession of several southern states, and thus to the Civil War. John will teach you about all this, plus Dred Scott, Roger Taney, and John Brown. Childhood Places in Picher, Oklahoma.
My family is from Pichure. I have memories from there. "Formerly a major national center of lead and zinc mining at the heart of the Tri-State Mining District, over a century of unrestricted subsurface excavation dangerously undermined most of Picher's town buildings and left giant piles of toxic metal-contaminated mine tailings (known as chat) heaped throughout the area. The discovery of the cave-in risks, groundwater contamination and health effects associated with the chat piles and subsurface shafts—particularly an alarming 1996 study which showed lead poisoning in 34% of the children in Picher[4]—eventually prompted a mandatory evacuation and buyout (via eminent domain) of the entire township by the Environmental Protection Agency and the incorporation of the town (along with the similarly contaminated satellite towns of Treece and Cardin) into the Tar Creek Superfund site. A 2006 Army Corps of Engineers study which showed 86% of Picher's buildings (including the town school) were badly undermined and subject to collapse at any time." http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picher,_Oklahoma I wonder about these findings. The same is true for Qupaw, Oklahoma; Commerce Oklahoma; Galena, Kansas; and Webb City , Missouri. No one is talking about closing those towns down. What really happened?

Mufti Kannada Dubbed Hindi Full Movie 2017 | ShivaRajkumar, SriiMurali |2018 Sandalwood Action Movie
Mufti is a 2017 Indian Kannada-language neo-noir action crime thriller film. The film tells the story of a police officer, played by Sriimurali, who tracks down and confronts an underworld boss, played by Shiva Rajkumar. At the cost of risking his life, an undercover cop Gana ventures into the big bad world of crime - a place called Ronapura, in search of a ruthless don Bhairati Ranagallu, actually peoples man taken over the place of don for justice. Let's just serve you the simple premise of the film on the platter. Mufti is a compelling story of a man Gana (Srimurli) who is an undercover policeman. The one man army or the lonely warrior Gana puts all his efforts, strenghts and power to achieve his objective. The crux of the previous line i.e. the objective of the character Gana is to capture the ruthless and fiery underworld mafia Bhairathi Ranagal. His mission is to collect evidence and arrest the underworld don Bhairathi Ranagal (Shiva Rajkumar) at the cost of risking his life. The noteworthy and idiosyncratic don Bhairathi Ranagal is the king of evil deeds. Now if we put the the character defenition of Bhairathi in simple words then he is the modern Robin Hood of the visual art with an healthy conjecture of various shades. The epic saga starts with the cinematic explanation of the villace Ranapura where the fiery don resides and rule. The simple reason behind the label of modern Robin Hood of visual art to the ruthless don Bhairathi ranagal is the projection of his professional and personal life. Bhairathi Ranagal runs many illegal buissiness majorly in mining and all the money collected from it is being used for the welfare of the poor villagers of Ronapura. As soon a s the story takes a lead, the character of this ruthless don Bhairathi Ranagal takes a wide shift from bieng a criminal to the Robin Hood of the village Ronapura. This is where our dynamic positive character of an undercover policeman Gana is influenced by the unexpected Grey shade character of the Bhairathi Ranagal. Bhairathi is the messiah of Ronapura which the major conflict plot point of this mainstream formula based experimental film. The plot point is dilemma, wiggling of thoughts, constant yet painful judgements leading to stressful decisions and the conclusion of these thoughts. Bhairathi Ranagal is a Mufti who choose his own way to provide happiness in the miserable lives of poor residents of Ronapura. The major shift in the life of Gana happens when he wish to see Bhairathi Ranagal once and actually this happen the day when Bhairathi have to visit the temple in the Ronapura village. But soon Gana realize that his master's life is in danger and the one man army Gana comes to rescue the dangerous situation. Because of this risk taking capability and unbeatable strength, Gana now becomes the right hand of the messiah of Ronapura Bhairathi Ranagal. Later, Gana learns that the local politician Raghuveer Bhandri (Devaraj) wants to kill Bhairathi because he wants to run Ronapura with brutal and corrupt bureaucracy. The story ends when Raghuveer comes to kill Bhairathi while Bhairathi was at the grave of his father. However, the one man army and alone fighter Gana comes to rescue Bhairathi again and kills all of them. Bhairathi was deeply influenced by Gana's work and dedication and hence he decides to surrender himself and accept all those charges on him. Two Years After Tornado, Cleanup Still Needed in Joplin
JOPLIN - There's still a lot of rebuilding left to do in the city. Construction crews work on several new schools, homes and even a brand new hospital. The tornado left its stamp on this city. All those schools, the hospital and several homes are being built with FEMA-approved storm shelters. But even with all the progress being made, Joplin now has to deal with another problem it dealt with long before the tornado: lead contamination. Once home to several lead mines and a smelter, Joplin found lead contamination in the yards of more than 2,300 people in the mid 1990s. The Environmental Protection Agency came through and cleaned up the contamination, but after all these years, the contamination has once again made its way to the surface. The tornado churned up the contaminated soil that was once too deep to be tested. Now, Jasper County has tested more than 1,000 yards and 443 in the tornado zone have high lead levels. That means it's up to Joplin's lead inspector, Leslie Heitkamp to start her work. "There are places in town where we start digging and dig up and find raw chunks of lead ore," said Heitkamp as she holds up a piece of the shiny-metallic material she pulled out of someone's front yard. "This causes lead poisoning." Heitkamp's team excavates yards and takes the contaminated soil to a dump site. Then, they bring in new soil so the yards are safe. They've done a lot of work already, but much remains to be done. "We still estimate on top of the 180 we've already done there's still possibly another 400-600 left to do," Heitkamp said. It's not a cheap fix either. It costs around $12,000 for every yard. "We were hearing from a lot of individuals whose homes were destroyed, 'We have enough insurance money to put a home back, but not a yard,'" said Dan Pekarek, director of the Joplin Health Department. Luckily, the EPA stepped in with a $3.5 million grant for the projects. Heitkamp says the EPA will foot the bill for as long as it's needed if that grant runs out. Heitkamp picks up some dirt on a work site on Virginia Avenue as her team uses the track hoe to fill up dump truck after dump truck of contaminated dirt. "There may be one or two on this street that weren't contaminated," she said. "But every single house, all the ones with sod on them [were], just everything up and down this street and it's like that way 8 blocks in this direction and 9 blocks in that direction." The Jasper County Health Department puts out a map of all the yards it's tested for lead levels and if the contaminated soil has been excavated. Every red dot signifies a yard with high lead levels. Looking at the area where the tornado ripped through the town, it's evident it ripped up a lot of contaminated dirt too.

2/04/2015 -- ALERT : Oklahoma STOPS FRACKING injection op after 4.0M+ earthquake swarm
Watch in 4K ultra-HD! - Breaking News out of Oklahoma! 1201am CST February 4, 2015: A series of 4.0M+ earthquakes at fracking operations across Oklahoma (over the past 7 days up to Feb 4 2015) has now lead to a huge development for the fracking industry, and a "seismic shift" in how government is responding to these escalating earthquake events. Many thanks to Linda Guertin for sharing this news. OKLAHOMA SHUTS INJECTION WELLS DOWN near Kansas, due to the multiple 4.0M+ earthquakes over the past week! http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/government/state-orders-injection-well-shut-down-after-northwestern-oklahoma-earthquake/article_4184d155-d9b2-523d-a8d5-033174ff8584.html ____ VICTORY! Thanks to you, the viewers, for sharing the news over the past week(s), months, and years.... getting the word out, thanks to your efforts this topic is getting the serious attention it deserves. Success comes in small steps! :) ____ Watch the video from February 1, 2015, covering the 4.0M+ earthquakes in Oklahoma which led to this new fracking ban: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHKEP0trekQ ____ These are the multiple larger 4.0M+ events I was reporting on in my videos that EVERYONE in the media (and in our online community) ignored. Someone in Oklahoma took notice of the movement as well. Texas Railroad Commission, you still want to DENY fracking causes earthquakes in the face of the USGS findings, the Oklahoma Commission findings, the Ohio Geologic Survey findings, the Arkansas Geologic Survey findings, and the Colorado Geologic Survey findings? Now that wells have been shut in Ohio, earthquakes dropped off in Ohio... now that wells have been shut off in Arkansas, earthquakes have dropped off in Arkansas, now that wells were shut off in Greeley Colorado, earthquakes have dropped off in North Colorado. When you stop fracking, earthquakes slow down (or sometimes stop all together!). Let's hope this new move by Oklahoma calms the border region down near Kansas. This is not over by a long shot, but its a baby step in the right direction. Doing baby steps now, will lead to vast strides later..... We've got miles to go before things calm down in this region. _____ See the report on the Texas Railroad Commission actually still DENYING fracking causes earthquakes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYmWwbPDovU ____ Forecast from January 21+22 calling for movement to hit Italy and Vanuatu, after issuing this video, a swarm hit Italy , and a 7.0M earthquake hit Vanuatu. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGKXBXpcN50 ____ See the forecasts calling for New Brunswick movement, Connecticut movement, and Quebec movement here: January 4, 2015 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucjsnGrgWb0 January 6, 2015 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBVlbYoPCRQ January 11, 2015 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXY38d__4D8 ___ Quebec hit: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usc000tgdg#general_summary New Brunswick hit: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usc000thpf#general_summary Connecticut hit: http://dutchsinse.com/1122015-east-coast-earthquake-strikes-connecticut-3-4m-event-at-2-6-miles-depth-forecast-correct/
