Australian Mining "A Birds eye view Iron Ore"
Take a round trip in a load cycle from Komatsu 830e and see what it's like in the mining game from a trucks point of view. This is main pit when BHP finished here they through everything, machines plant, equipment you name it, into the pit and buried it, now it is being removed to gain access to the rich ore. The Iron Ore here is of high quality 67+%, you can weld the rocks together. This mine was opened originally pre WW2 lucky the Japs didn't get into Darwin and come down & get their mits on it......... Things would be dramatically different in Aussi today............any way Koolan Island has some interesting/amazing history worth a look on Wikipedia. BHP approves $4b iron ore mine as new boom hits the Pilbara
BHP approves $4b iron ore mine as new boom hits the Pilbara: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-06-15/bhp-approves-4-billion-dollar-mine-expansion/9874086. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPLbW-HoiBuA8yepLypwA6g?sub_confirmation=1 BHP approves $4b iron ore mine as new boom hits the Pilbara By business reporter Stephen Letts  The mining boom appears to be getting something of a second wind with BHP approving a new $4 billion iron ore project in WA's Pilbara. BHP's approval of the South Flank mine comes after Fortescue gave the green light to its new $1.3 billion Eliwana project in the Pilbara last month, while Rio Tinto is expected to approve the $3 billion Koodaideri mine before the end of the year. However, unlike the last massive ramp-up in production which led to a global oversupply of iron ore and crushed prices, the new mines are being brought on stream to replace exhausted reserves in older pits. The South Flank project is expected to start production in 2021 and have a life span of more than 25 years. BHP's head of mineral operations, Mike Henry, said the project would fully replace the 80 million tonne per annum production from the Yandi mine which is reaching the end of its economic life. "The project will create around 2,500 construction jobs, more than 600 ongoing operational roles and generate many opportunities for Western Australian suppliers," Mr Henry said. Importantly for BHP, the mine should lift the average quality of BHP's Pilbara production at a time higher-quality products are attracting significant premiums to benchmark prices. How Steel is Made: "The Drama of Steel" 1946 Bureau of Mines; Iron Mine to Steel Mill
Support this channel: https://www.patreon.com/jeffquitney more at http://scitech.quickfound.net/ "This documentary film starts with the history of the steelmaking process, explaining the operation of the blast furnace and the open hearth furnace. It goes on to cover the mining of ore and limestone, transportation and coking of coal, open hearth and rolling mill operations, and plating and finishing. In addition, it also illustrates many of the applications of steel mill products. The film is partly animated." Originally a public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steelmaking Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Steelmaking is the second step in producing steel from iron ore. In this stage, impurities such as sulfur, phosphorus, and excess carbon are removed from the raw iron, and alloying elements such as manganese, nickel, chromium and vanadium are added to produce the exact steel required. Older processes The earliest means of producing steel was in a bloomery. Early modern methods of producing steel were often labour-intensive and highly skilled arts... An important aspect of the industrial revolution was the development of large-scale methods of producing forgeable metal (bar iron or steel). The puddling furnace was initially a means of producing wrought iron, but was later applied to steel production. The real revolution in steelmaking only began at the end of the 1850s. The Bessemer process was the first successful method of steelmaking in quantity, followed by the open hearth furnace. Modern processes Modern steelmaking processes are broken into two categories: primary and secondary steelmaking. Primary steelmaking uses mostly new iron as the feedstock, usually from a blast furnace. Secondary steelmaking uses scrap steel as the primary raw material. Gases created during the production of steel can be used as a source of power. Primary steelmaking Basic oxygen steelmaking is a method of primary steelmaking in which carbon-rich molten pig iron is made into steel. Blowing oxygen through molten pig iron lowers the carbon content of the alloy and changes it into low-carbon steel. The process is known as basic due to the pH of the refractories—calcium oxide and magnesium oxide—that line the vessel to withstand the high temperature of molten metal. The process was developed in 1948 by Robert Durrer and commercialized in 1952--1953 by Austrian VOEST and ÖAMG. The LD converter, named after the Austrian towns Linz and Donawitz (a district of Leoben) is a refined version of the Bessemer converter where blowing of air is replaced with blowing oxygen. It reduced capital cost of the plants, time of smelting, and increased labor productivity. Between 1920 and 2000, labor requirements in the industry decreased by a factor of 1,000, from more than 3 worker-hours per tonne to just 0.003. The vast majority of steel manufactured in the world is produced using the basic oxygen furnace; in 2000, it accounted for 60% of global steel output. Modern furnaces will take a charge of iron of up to 350 tons and convert it into steel in less than 40 minutes, compared to 10--12 hours in an open hearth furnace. Secondary steelmaking Secondary steelmaking is most commonly performed in an electric arc furnace. HIsarna steelmaking The HIsarna steelmaking process is a process for primary steelmaking in which iron ore is processed almost directly into steel. The process is based around a new type of blast furnace called a Cyclone Converter Furnace, which makes it possible to skip the process of manufacturing pig iron pellets that is necessary for the basic oxygen steelmaking process. Without the necessity for this preparatory step the HIsarna process is more energy-efficient and has a lower carbon footprint than traditional steelmaking processes...

Pilbara Iron Ore Infrastructure - Phase A and B
Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) awarded McConnell Dowell the design and construction of the Pilbara Iron Ore Infrastructure Project at Port Hedland in Western Australia. FMG is positioning itself as the third major iron ore producer in Australia. MacDow's scope of work included a load-out berth, a lay-by berth and navigation aids. The load-out berth comprises a 100 m long approach jetty complete with roadway and elevated conveyor trusses; a transfer station platform with wharf conveyor, drive and belt change-out areas; and a wharf structure to supports the shiploader. The wharf includes shiploader rails; six independent berthing dolphins including fenders and quick release mooring hooks and controls; and trafficable concrete deck required for maintenance and associated traffic. The lay-by berth comprises eight independent berthing and mooring dolphins with interconnecting catwalks. Included on the berth were remotely controlled quick release mooring hooks and capstans on all dolphins. A total of five new navigation aids were designed and installed within the confines of the Port Hedland Port Authority (PHPA) inner harbour. Piling of the 341 piles were carried out by two piling barges with 350 tonne cranes, and a construction barge with a 180 tonne crane. Each of these barges was in turn supplied by four material/supply barges. Piles were driven using a piling frame system specifically designed by the company and predominantly constructed by MacDow's fabrication yard in Batam, Indonesia. The piling works included installation of 341 no. 1,016 diameter piles totalling 6,230 tonnes with wall thickness of 20, 22 and 35 mm. The piles ranged in size from 38 m to 55 m long. A modular approach was used to construct the deck structures. Steel modules form the main structural elements and incorporate pre-cast concrete planks, conveyor galleries and associated equipment. The modules were laser aligned off site to ensure on site alignment required only minor adjustment. The modular approach minimised on-site work, reduced the overall programme duration, and ensured achievement of our first milestone date for the arrival of the client's shiploader. Overall the project was completed on time and on budget, and MacDow's performance was recognised by its peers with the awarding of the WA Civil Contractor's Federation 2008 Construction Excellence Award. Based on the performance on this project, MacDow was awarded the first phase of the expansion of the facility. This includes the addition of a new approach jetty; a new transfer tower; new main loadout berth; new lay-by berth; new berthing dolphins and associated works. With the current growth and expansions planned for the Pilbara area over the next few years, McConnell Dowell is at the forefront of the design and construction of new civil marine projects to service the resources boom.

The Iron Treasure Chest (1970)
This 16mm film documents the mining of iron ore at Mt. Goldsworthy in the northwest of Western Australia, and its transport and export by bulk carriers. Shows family life in an isolated mining community. Historical note: The reserves of iron ore were depleted by 1994, and the mine was closed and the town abandoned. All buildings were removed and the land returned to its natural state as much as possible. Little now remains to be seen of the town. This 16mm film was produced by WAVE (West Australian Visual Education) in 1970.

Jack Absalom's: Treasures Of The Pilbara
English adventurer William Dampier sailed along Australia's North West coast in 1688. He called it the most barren spot on the globe but noticed that the compass showed a powerful attraction to a range of mountains to the south. For the next 250 years that powerful attraction was ignored, until in the 1960's it was found there were vast reserves of iron ore, today it is thought there is enough to supply world needs for the next 400 years. Jack Absalom's journey into the Pilbara unearths many of the regions treasures. You also get to travel on some of the giant ore trains that carry the economic treasure to the ports and onto giant cargo ships headed to Japan and China.

Loading Iron Ore at Hamersley's Tom Price mine. WA.
I took this silent movie when I was working at Hamersley Iron's Tom Price iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of WA, in the late 1970's. The smaller haultrucks were Wabco120B and the larger ones were Wabco3200B, ( They carried well over 200 tons of iron ore at a time.) Both were relatively easy to drive once you had got used to their size. I think the quality of the movie is pretty good, considering it's age and the fact that it has been transferred from old Cine film---VHS---DVD---PC and finally to YouTube.
