In this video, we consider the environmental impact caused by a range of different types of chemical industries. Chemicals produced by the chemicals industry are used to make virtually every human-made product we know and play an important role in our everyday lives. These products can protect our crops from pests and increase their yields. Other chemicals can prevent and cure diseases. Some might provide us with insulation to reduce energy use and offer countless other benefits. The use of these resources could impact the environment in two ways. Firstly, chemical industries deplete our resources, especially renewable and nonrenewable; and secondly they can create pollution. Chemical industries use water. The key use of water is as waste control, where the waste stream from chemical processes are treated with water to dissolve materials; and in the and heating and cooling of reactions. The impact of water use on the environment is not only the volume of water consumed, but also the altered chemical composition, or the temperature of the used water being returned to the environment. Polluted water is a concern, but the also heated waste water can also have a significant impact on aquatic ecosystems. The energy used to power these chemical industries comes from oil, natural gas and coal, which contribute carbon dioxide emissions. Substances that cause acid rain and the tropospheric ozone are on the decline. Also, chemicals like CFCs are also in decline because of their recognised impact on forming holes in the stratospheric ozone layer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has an explicit partnership agreement with the coal industry to market its combustion wastes for consumer, agricultural and industrial uses without knowing the true health risks, according to documents released by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility. As a result, one arm of the EPA is now moving to classify coal ash and other combustion byproducts as hazardous waste even as another arm is promoting its use in wallboard, kitchen counters and carpet backing among an array of so-called beneficial uses.

Environmental impact of modern agriculture • The environmental impact of modern agriculture is the effect that different farming practices have on the ecosystems around them, and how those effects can be traced back to those practices. • The environmental impact depends on the production practices of the system used by farmers. • The connection between emissions into the environment and the farming system is indirect, as it also depends on other climate variables such as rainfall and temperature. • There are two types of indicators of environmental impact: "Means-based", which is based on the farmer's production methods. For ex: the quality of groundwater, that is effected by the amount of nitrogen applied to the soil, and "effect-based", which is the impact that farming methods have on the farming system or on emissions to the environment. For ex: An indicator reflecting the loss of nitrate to groundwater. Issues related to Agriculture Climate change • Assessment of the effects of global climate changes on agriculture might help to properly anticipate and adapt farming to maximize agricultural production. • Agriculture has been shown to produce significant effects on climate change, primarily through the production and release of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide that affect air, water, and soil quality, as well as biodiversity. • Agriculture also alters the Earth's land cover, which can change its ability to absorb or reflect heat and light, thus contributing to radiative forcing. Deforestation • Deforestation is clearing a wide area of trees. One of the causes of deforestation is to clear land for pasture or crops. • Trees act as a carbon sink: that is, they absorb carbon dioxide, an unwanted greenhouse gas, out of the atmosphere. • Removing trees releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and leaves behind fewer trees to absorb the increasing amount of carbon dioxide. • It worsens climate change and causes extreme fluctuations in temperature. Genetic engineering • Genetically engineered crops are herbicide-tolerant, and their overuse has created herbicide resistant "super weeds", which may ultimately increase the use of herbicides. • Seed contamination is another problem of genetic engineering; it can occur from wind or bee pollination that is blown from genetically-engineered crops to normal crops. Irrigation • Among some of these problems is the depletion of underground aquifers through over-drafting. • Soil can be over-irrigated because of poor water distribution and poor management of waste water, chemicals, leads to water pollution. • Over-irrigation can cause deep drainage from rising water tables that can lead to problems of irrigation salinity requiring water table control by some form of subsurface land drainage. Pollutants • A wide range of agricultural chemicals are used in farming. some of them become pollutants through use, misuse, or ignorance. • Pesticides can leach through the soil and enter the groundwater, as well as linger in food products and result in death in humans. • The erosion of topsoil, which contains chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides, can be carried away from farms to other places. • Additional and specific problems that may arise with the release of pollutants from agriculture are Pesticide drift, soil contamination, air pollution spray drift, Pesticides, especially those based on organochloride, Pesticide residue in foods, Pesticide toxicity to bees, Bioremediation. Soil degradation • Soil degradation is the decline in soil quality that can be a result of many factors, especially from agriculture. • Soils hold the majority of the world's biodiversity, and healthy soils are essential for food production and an adequate water supply. • Common attributes of soil degradation can be Soil erosion, salting, waterlogging, pesticide contamination, decline in soil structure quality, loss of fertility, changes in soil acidity, alkalinity, and salinity. Waste • Plasticulture is the use of plastic mulch in agriculture. Farmers use plastic sheets as mulch to cover 50-70% of the soil and allows them to use drip irrigation systems to have better control over soil nutrients and moisture. • Rain is not required in this system, and farms that use Plasticulture are built to encourage the fastest runoff of rain. • The incineration and recycling options are complicated by the variety of the types of plastics that are used and by the geographic dispersal of the plastics. • While there has been minor success with this, there is also the problem of how long the plastic takes to degrade, as many biodegradable products take a long time to break down.

Over the past few years, the coal industry in the West Bank has become a central challenge for the region. The conventional method of producing coal, which includes burning large amounts of wood for over 20 days, severely pollutes the environment and creates a high risk of developing respiratory problems for the Palestinian workers and Bedouin living in the area. Together with the World Vision international organization, the Civil Administration has been working to examine and integrate alternative methods of producing coal in cooperation with the Palestinians in the West Bank region. Many trials and experiments are being conducted at the Civil Administration Headquarters with the objective of determining the safest, cleanest, most efficient and most environmentally sound method that will hopefully be implemented in the West Bank, while also working to stop the current method of coal production which harms public health and the environment.

In the United States, the largest methane emissions come from the decomposition of wastes in landfills, ruminant digestion and manure management associated with domestic livestock, natural gas and oil systems, and coal mining. Chicken, turkey, pig, and cow agriculture are collectively the largest producers of methane in the US. Methane is 20 times more powerful at trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere than carbon dioxide. The meat egg and dairy Industries produce 65% of worldwide nitrous oxide emissions. Nitrous oxide is 300 times more powerful at trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere is and carbon dioxide. If one person exchanges eating meat for a vegan diet they'll reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.5 tons per year. If every American dropped one serving of chicken per week from their diet it would save the same amount of CO2 emissions of taking 500,000 cars off the road. 1 calorie from animal protein requires 11 times as much fossil fuel as one calorie of plant protein. The diets of meat eaters create 7 times the greenhouse emissions of the diets of vegans. Nearly half of all water used in the United States goes to raising animals for food. It takes more than 2,400 gallons of water to produce one pound of meat one pound of wheat takes 25 gallons. You save more water by not eating one pound of me than you would by now taking a shower for 6 months. A vegan diet requires 300 gallons of water a day vs a meat eating diet which requires 4000 gallons per day. Animals raised for food create 89,000 pounds of excrement per second, none of which benefits from the waste treatment facilities like human excrement does. The situation creates massive amounts of groundwater pollution. Chicken, hog, cattle excrement has polluted 35,000 miles of rivers in 22 States. Raising animals for food uses 30% of the earth's land mass - about the same size as Asia. More than 250 million Acres of US Forest have been cleared to create cropland to grow grain to feed farmed animals. The equivalent of 7 football fields are bulldoze every minute to create more room for farm animals. When asked if mining or agriculture is more dangerous, ex-coal miner and now cattle producer Matt Bennetto’s answer is ‘agriculture’. He says agriculture could learn some valuable lessons about Work Health and Safety (WHS) from the resources sector, having experienced first-hand the mining sector’s strict safety regulations in action. Matt spent seven years working underground in coal mining and hard rock mining in tunnel construction, before returning full-time to his family’s Charters Towers cattle property, Virginia Park, two years ago. During his time working underground, Matt was a health and safety representative and an underground operations trainer for a number of years. Comparing the approach to risk management in mining with agriculture, he believes the agriculture sector is still playing catch up when it comes to workplace health and safety. “When I went underground coal mining after working in underground hard rock mining, I thought that coal mining would be the most dangerous industry to work in,” Matt said. “And yet, because the industry mitigates most of the dangers I actually think coal mining ends up a safer environment than the everyday operations on a cattle station. “Some of the on-farm dangers are short-term, immediate ones like falling off a horse or cutting yourself on barbed wire, while others are long-term risks like the impacts of sun exposure.” Matt believes if agriculture could draw from the mining industry’s approach to greater task awareness, it could save lives and prevent injuries. New research exploring what’s stopping primary producers from improving their safety practices has found almost half of all deaths on farms could be prevented, simply by implementing solutions we already know about. Funded by the Primary Industries Health and Safety Partnership and led by Richard Franklin of James Cook University, the study found the major barriers to implementing improved safety practices included perceived cost, time and inconvenience to implement changes. The Primary Industries Health and Safety Partnership (PIHSP), funded by the Cotton, Grains and Rural Industries Research and Development Corporations, as well as the Australian Meat Processor Corporation and Meat & Livestock Australia, aims to promote best practise WHS practices and improve the health and safety of workers and their families in farming and fishing industries across Australia. When it comes to engaging producers in farm safety, Matt believes taking an educational and training approach was more appealing to producers than a bureaucratic approach. “The mining industry has created all sorts of actions and documentation to create task awareness,” Matt said. “I think lack of task awareness on-farm happens for a variety of reasons, but primarily two reasons. One is lack of experience in the job or task that people are doing, so they’re not aware of the hazards, and secondly, people become so familiar with a task that they become complacent and stop looking out for hazards.” Besides running their cattle operation, Matt and his wife Sonia, along with his parents, Rob and Sue, also host agricultural traineeship programs run by Northern Skills Alliance (NSA) on Virginia Park, as well as school groups. The training blocks cover all facets of agriculture including cattle work, horse riding, motorbike skills, mechanical servicing and welding. Matt believes there are many small steps producers can take that would ultimately make a big difference to risk management.

According to the North Dakota State University Agricultural Economics Department, the states lignite industry is the fifth largest industry, following agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and petroleum. More than 28,000 jobs in North Dakota result either directly or indirectly from the coal mining and power generating industries. In fact, people working for the coal industry in North Dakota enjoy some of the states highest wages. North Dakotas economy receives about $3 billion in total business activity due to coal per year, and nearly $100 million in state tax revenue annually. The North Dakota Geological Survey estimates that recoverable, in-state coal reserves can supply North Dakota coal-based power plants for over 800 years at their current consumption rates. Last week, North Carolina lawmakers passed House Bill 467, which limits the damages that residents could collect against hog farms. The billion-dollar industry is primarily clustered in the eastern part of the state, where hog farms collect billions of gallons of untreated pig feces and urine in what are essentially cesspools, then dispose of the waste by spraying it into the air. Residents living in the area of the spray complain of adverse health effects and odor so bad that it limits their ability to be outdoors. Mines are also draining Australia's pool of skilled labour from other industries and driving up wages. 101 East asks: What is the cost of Australia's mining boom? Here Australian 101 East fixer Sian Gard takes us behind the scenes of the 12-day film shoot with reporter-producer Chan Tau Chou and cameraman Lee Ali. When you travel what is the worst thing that could happen? Some might say missing a flight, others might say you get crammed into the centre seat on a full flight. But when you are part of a film crew, one of the more difficult challenges is travelling with 181 kilogrammes of camera equipment. When an international film crew from Al Jazeera English calls you and says they want to come to Australia and film a story about the mining industry in two weeks time, the first thing you say is "I would love to be a part of this incredible story". The second thing you do? Start working fast. The scope and depth of the mining industry, its impact on the country and the state can be broken down into small digestible chunks as political, economic and social, but the bigger picture is a great deal more complicated. The Australian mining industry has seen exponential growth over the last 10 years with increasing exports to China. Western Australia, considered the economic hub of the country, now holds the nation's purse strings and is host to some of the world's most influential mining and resource sector companies. Perth, considered the second-most isolated city in the world, has seen changes on many fronts that not only includes an increase in resource dollars but a higher cost of living, a politically strong liberal state government and increasing financial disparity between mining and resource sector employees and everyone else. So how does one get all these issues into one story? You make phone calls and lots of them. One-hundred-and-eighty-one kilogrammes of camera equipment and an introductory dinner later, we are off filming in Perth and Karratha. We have 12 days to interview a range of people invested in the mining and resources sector in various ways. Finance experts, counsellors who see the downside of living a Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO) lifestyle, business operators who say their home towns are dying due to the mining industry and police who are left to clean up the alcohol and drug fuelled mess from workers blowing off steam. The biggest challenge of a shoot on this scale? Distance, time and getting people to talk on camera. Logistically, organising a film shoot for a crew that is flying from Malaysia to Perth in western Australia and then Karratha in the north-west of western Australia, with budgets and deadlines is exciting, fun and a challenge. Accommodation, hire cars, flights, places to eat, filming permissions and scheduling interviews, your world becomes one mission and one only. Get what the film crew needs so that the story is done. Karratha in the north of the state is a 22-hour drive by car or a two-hour flight on one of two commercial carriers that fly every hour to the isolated desert town. After checking in with 181 kilogrammes of camera equipment or 13 cases of luggage and arriving in Karratha, we unpack and our long days begin. The strain of putting together a half-hour documentary in a foreign country and dealing with tight deadlines can put a great deal of pressure on any crew. People generally get tired, they snap and sometimes when you are confined to a small space for hours on end (i.e. a car that is loaded to the roof with camera equipment) the last thing you want to do is see the people you are working with. But Chan Tau Chou and Lee Ali approached the long stressful days with humour, grace, professionalism and the ability to sleep in the most unusual locations (on top of windy rocky outcrops). Filming in the north-west was a whirlwind of driving long distances, climbing rocky terrain, rising at 4am and falling into bed at midnight with back-to-back interviews in between. I am excited to see the final product of Australia's boomtown curse. I think it is a story that people need to hear about. We speak to New York Times reporter Charles Duhigg about the latest in his investigative series Toxic Waters, which examines the worsening pollution in the nations water systems. Duhigg joined us last month to discuss how chemical companies have violated the Clean Water Act more than 500,000 times in the last five years, most without punishment. Across the planet, two fundamental human needs — energy and water — often find themselves on a collision course. A new documentary looks at one such choke point in India, where coal mining and its negative environmental impact on water is the source of a regulatory battle with significant implications. We spoke with the filmmaker to learn more about this complex clash of needs. That’s the focus of this edition of Wilson Center NOW. Sean Peoples is a multimedia producer and program associate for the Wilson Center’s Environmental Change and Security Program. Through documentaries, interviews, and podcasts, Sean explores the intersection of conservation and health in the developing world. The short documentary, Healthy People, Healthy Environment: Integrated Development in Tanzania, was the recipient of a 2012 Silver Telly Award, and Scaling the Mountain: Protecting Forests for Families in Nepal won a 2013 Bronze Telly. His newest film is titled, Broken Landscape: Confronting India’s Water-Energy Choke Point. Prior to his position at the Wilson Center, he worked as associate director for Congressional Programs at the Population Resource Center. Sean has a BA from American University in political science with a focus on environmental policy issues.

Land Use Facts - mining land use in NSW

Mining has a very small footprint in NSW, with actual mining operations using less than 0.1 percent of land, while agriculture uses around 78 percent of the state's land. Mining and other industries have a long history of successfully co-existing together, creating jobs, investment and prosperity for NSW, particularly in regional communities. Mining is vital to our economy, providing around 40,000 jobs across the state (ABS). NSW mining operations directly spent $10.8 billion in NSW in 2015/16, including wages for their employees, purchases from more than 8,000 local supplier businesses, and royalties and taxes paid to the NSW Government.
