a16z with Andreessen Horowitz Podcast: Cryptocurrencies, App Coins, and Investing in Protocols

32:35
Most of us have probably heard of bitcoin and ethereum -- but did you know there were 15 new cryptocurrencies launched this past month alone? How then do we know which protocols to invest in -- not just as a developer or user, but as an investor? Because, let's face it, open source software and services need resources not just to survive but thrive. General partner Chris Dixon talks about this dynamic between open vs closed in this episode of the a16z Podcast with Olaf Carlson-Wee, founder of (a16z investment) Polychain, a new kind of hedge fund that invests directly in cryptocurrencies at the protocol layer. But what does that actually mean? Instead of investing in the companies that are building on top of these protocols, Polychain invests in the protocols themselves -- in much the same way that you could have invested in domain names instead of early internet companies like Amazon in the early days (which most people actually didn't have access to do). Imagine if you could have bought equity in Linux! As people create application-specific tokens for these protocols (also known as “app coins”) to crowdfund and share equity in these networks, it's actually "bringing capitalism into open source" -- and could even one day lead to less centralized platforms and a web owned by users. It's also creating a whole new asset class... but whatever you do, do NOT try this at home! SUBCRIBE - https://goo.gl/aiECKP The a16z Podcast discusses tech and culture trends, news, and the future -- especially as ‘software eats the world’. It features industry experts, business leaders, and other interesting thinkers and voices from around the world. This podcast is produced by Andreessen Horowitz (aka “a16z”), a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm. Multiple episodes are released every week; visit a16z.com for more details.

Marc Andreessen: Vision for Bitcoin

03:24
Hello everyone! We’re glad to see you again checking out another episode of CryptoTimes.TV. Before we introduce you to the subject of our today’s video, tell us what browser you’re using for viewing our channel? Is it Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Opera? Is there anybody still using Mosaic? Guess a good deal of our audience hasn't even heard of that. In that case, Mosaic was the first widely used Web browser. And it was Mosaic that made the World Wide Web and the Internet so popular in America and beyond. But why would we talk about a browser on our channel? Well, we never meant to. It’s just that Mosaic is the first thing that comes into our minds when we hear the name Marc Andreessen. And that is exactly the subject of our today’s episode. For those of you who have come across this name just, Marc Lowell Andreessen is an American entrepreneur, investor, and software engineer. He is the co-author of Mosaic, the first widely used Web browser; co-founder of Netscape; and co-founder and general partner of Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. If you wanna know something about the early days of the Internet inception, then this is certainly your guy. After all he was one of the first IT professionals who saw the huge potential of a system that connects computers throughout the world. And back in 2014 he saw the same potential in a currency created on the basis of a decentralized network of computing devices – Bitcoin. Mr. Andreessen thinks that we'll all look back in 20 years and conclude that Bitcoin was as influential a platform for innovation as the Internet itself was. He also believes that negotiating internet privacy issues with the government is a waste of time, because as things stand now, there can never be any net neutrality. State censorship is no longer a secret. Speaking in an interview with The Washington Post about the impact of measures implemented by the Obama administration to keep American citizens under constant surveillance via the Internet, Marc pointed out that up until 1995 no big technology company thought the Internet was going to be important, because it came from the fringe. Also think of Steve Jobs and PCs and the environment they emerged in. Jobs was like a hippie back then, for example. And Bitcoin is the classic instance of the same phenomenon, according to Marc. It wasn’t designed by a major financial institution or some secret state-run lab underground. Although our fellow tin-foil hatters might well argue with that. Andreessen is convinced that Bitcoin is in the early stages of mainstreaming right now, because “mainstream venture capital firms are funding mainstream startups, employing mainstream engineers to build services that'll be used by mainstream people.” But here’s what interesting. Most of the Bitcoin supporters put an emphasis on Bitcoin giving more anonymity to their transacting. But guess what? With Bitcoin anybody can look at the entire ledger and verify who owns what. So if you're a law enforcement agency or an intelligence agency, this is a much easier way to track the flow of money than cash. So Marc believes that in the end the regulators are going to wind up being pro-Bitcoin, while a great deal of the current Bitcoin advocates is going to wind up being anti-Bitcoin. Do you think you’ll change your opinion on the concept of digital money that cannot be faked? What does the future hold for our regular bills and coins? Share your own revelations with us in the comments section. #marcandreessen #bitcoin #cryptocurrency #horowitz #mosaic

Marc Andreessen - The Future of the Cloud

04:49
CipherCloud - http://www.ciphercloud.com CipherCloud is committed to building trust in the cloud. Our revolutionary cloud encryption gateway technology is enabling organizations worldwide to enjoy the benefits of the cloud that otherwise wouldn't be able to due to concerns about data security, privacy, residency, and regulatory compliance. Our company was founded in 2010 by security visionary Pravin Kothari, who has started two other successful security companies, including ArcSight, which was sold to Hewlett Packard for $1.6 billion. Pravin recognized that while the cloud was experiencing explosive growth, the technologies that addressed the new security threats associated with this new model had not kept pace. Pravin saw an opportunity to protect sensitive enterprise data across multiple clouds through a revolutionary new approach—the cloud encryption gateway. This technology allows organizations to protect their data in the cloud without sacrificing application functionality, the user experience, or performance, and without making any changes to the cloud application. CipherCloud's vision, along with one of the most well-respected management teams in cloud security, has attracted investment from premier venture capital firms including Andreessen Horowitz (Facebook, Twitter, Groupon, Skype, and Zynga), Index Ventures, and T-Venture, the VC investment arm of Deutsche Telekom. CipherCloud has experienced exceptional growth and success, and already has over 100 employees and marquee customers in US, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific. Our company and our ground-breaking innovation in format and operation-preserving encryption and tokenization technology have been recognized for their innovation by industry thought leaders with over a dozen awards including Gartner's Cool Vendor in Cloud Security. We've delivered products for major cloud services such as Salesforce, Google Apps, Amazon Cloud, and Office 365, and we're really just getting started.

Crypto and Decentralization: Building Blocks

45:33
“Show me the incentive and I'll show you the outcomes.” At the end of the day, observes a16z crypto general partner Chris Dixon, Satoshi's whitepaper [the original bitcoin paper outlining a peer-to-peer decentralized network and blockchain sans centralized third parties] is nine pages of incentives. It's the kind of incentive design that you can use to build many other things on the internet (which itself is driven by very simple core protocols and could even upgrade itself as a result). But only with the right incentives (and alignment of those incentives among different entities), of course. Which is where cryptonetworks come in -- especially since they don't rely on hardware buildout (as with earlier generations of internet deployment), but rather on software (which is essentially just logic, the kind of building block you can use to build countless other things). The breadth of possibilities is endless. This means that platforms and networks (and operating systems, for that matter) can spend less time, energy, money, and frankly, suffering due to fighting -- thanks to distorted business models that lead them to extract value from users and compete among complements (vs. substitutes/better alternatives). The internet-native business models baked into crypto, however, could lead to greater competition and better options for users. But what are the missing building blocks, that can help make such networks more iterated games vs. one-off prisoner's dilemmas? And what will it take for these networks to truly reach web-scale, as it's still just the beginning? Because decentralization is the means to an end -- not the end in and itself -- observes a16z crypto partner Ali Yahya, so what do we need to build next to get there? In this video (guest hosted by freelance software engineer and writer Devon Zuegel), Dixon and Yahya share their thoughts on where we've been, and where we're going with the internet. * * * Please note that the a16z crypto fund is a separate legal entity managed by CNK Capital Management, L.L.C. 02:27
Marc Andreessen, Craft Ventures Back Crypto Hedge Fund Multicoin Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency and worldwide payment system. It is the first decentralized digital currency, as the system works without a central bank or single administrator. The network is peer-to-peer and transactions take place between users directly, without an intermediary. These transactions are verified by network nodes through the use of cryptography and recorded in a public distributed ledger called a blockchain. Bitcoin was invented by an unknown person or group of people under the name Satoshi Nakamoto and released as open-source software in 2009. Bitcoins are created as a reward for a process known as mining. They can be exchanged for other currencies, products, and services. As of February 2015, over 100,000 merchants and vendors accepted bitcoin as payment.[14] Research produced by the University of Cambridge estimates that in 2017, there are 2.9 to 5.8 million unique users using a cryptocurrency wallet, most of them using bitcoin. ► SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE VIDEOS: https://goo.gl/NYaHq2 ► Bitcoin News -Alt Coin news - coin telegraph - coindesk - coin market cap https://goo.gl/45UVFu ★★★ Thanks for watching! Freakonomics Radio - Why Everybody Who Doesn’t Hate Bitcoin Loves It

37:45
After being bombarded by email requests for months, Freakonomics Radio has finally caved and made an episode about Bitcoin. It’s called “Why Everybody Who Doesn’t Hate Bitcoin Loves It.” The gist: thinking of Bitcoin as just a digital currency is like thinking about the Internet as just e-mail. Its potential is much more exciting than that. Bitcoin is often described as “virtual gold” — as well as everything from a “bubble” to a “Ponzi scheme” to “a haven for individuals to buy black market items.” But what excites some people, like Silicon Valley veteran Marc Andreessen, is Bitcoin’s potential as a new technology that could underlie any number of transactions, well beyond the simple swapping of currency. Andreessen, a Web pioneer, is now on the board of companies like Facebook and eBay. He is not a disinterested observer in the Bitcoin debate: his venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz has invested around $50 million in two Bitcoin-related companies, including Coinbase, and Andreessen says they plan to invest much more to enable Bitcoin to go mainstream. Why such confidence? The reason, Andreessen tells Stephen Dubner, is that Bitcoin is “the solution to a fundamental problem in computer science”: ANDREESSEN: One of the things … that’s been missing on the Internet for 20 years is kind of a native concept of money…The ability to very easily pay somebody online, the ability to very easily charge for a piece of content, the ability to very easily exchange a digital title, or a digital key, or a digital contract has just been missing because you have no mechanism for establishing trust. And so Bitcoin basically holds the promise of being the first solution to establishing trust over an untrusted network. Susan Athey, an award-winning economist at Stanford with a background in computer science, is also a big believer in the technology behind Bitcoin; for what it’s worth, Athey advises the company behind Ripple, which is Bitcoin’s top competitor (by market cap): ATHEY: The beauty of a new currency, which is part of a virtual currency protocol, is that what I’m moving from me to you is just an entry on a secure, public ledger. And that public ledger is maintained by a set of computers all talking to each other using a protocol. So I don’t have to worry about some bank giving me an IOU and then giving that IOU and handing it to another bank. Instead, if I make a transaction over the virtual currency, it’s just an entry in the ledger. So I don’t need a middleman. New York Superintendent of Financial Services Benjamin Lawsky, who is leading the charge to regulate Bitcoin in the U.S., tells Dubner that he is concerned about the freedom Bitcoin affords to criminals: LAWSKY: It’s very hard to transport $1 million in hard currency overseas. You can’t just put it in a backpack and get it on a plane very easily. But it is very easy to do that now digitally using Bitcoin. That said, Lawsky is also excited about the possibilities of a technology like Bitcoin, which could bring down all sorts of transaction fees. This may be bad news for traditional banks, credit-card companies, and other fee-seeking middlemen. But, as Lawsky points out, a lot of other people stand to benefit: LAWSKY: Right now, there are thousands and thousands of New Yorkers who work hard every day to send money back home to their families in whatever country they’re from…And right now they’re paying fees for those wire transactions each week at the end of the week, 7, 8, 9 percent. And that’s a lot of money for people who often can’t afford it. A crowd of leading economists, including two Nobel laureates and former Fed chairman Alan Greenspan, have bashed Bitcoin. They’ve expressed alarm about the astronomical rise in the digital currency’s value. Marc Andreessen argues that they are missing the larger point: ANDREESSEN: It’s a little bit like dogs watching TV. It’s like, it’s all very interesting, but like whatever until another dog shows up on screen and then the dog freaks out. Economists, like this stuff is all like, whatever, technology, geek, nerds whatever and then “currency” is the flag. And so the minute the word “currency” shows up, all the economists perk up because if there’s one thing economists are all experts on it’s currency… And they look at it and they say, “Oh my god, people are paying $600 for this thing, it’s just a piece of fake digital currency, people have just lost their minds.” I don’t think that they are looking at the underlying substance. ➤ Google Plus: https://plus.google.com/b/113356460096647194676/113356460096647194676 ➤ Subscriber: https://goo.gl/rQxE4G

Bitcoin: An Alternative Investment

59:41
http://www.angelnetwork.com This interview is compliments of Angel Investors Network. According to Bitcoin news site CoinDesk, 2014 venture capital has flooded the bitcoin ecosystem reaching over $110 Million. Marc Andreessen, a well-known entrepreneur, and investor, is betting big on the future of bitcoin with investments totaling upwards of $50 million. The Wall Street Journal’s Gregory Zuckerman reports that Andreessen has no plan on slowing down, claiming that he will invest “hundreds of millions” more in bitcoin-related businesses. “You know, magic markets don’t appear all the time, so you take advantage of them.”- Marc Andreessen The beauty of this revolutionary “magic market” is that there are ample opportunities for high net worth individuals to get their “piece of the pie”. Wallet providers and exchanges, such as Coinbase, charge a premium on the bitcoins sold through their website. Someone interested in investing millions should realize the accessibility of the vast market in front of them. There is not only money to be made through capital gains, but also in creating, stabilizing, and maintaining the bitcoin network. Investors have an alternative to purchasing bitcoins through exchanges; they can create their own through a process known as “mining”. Cloud mining contracts have arisen recently as a new form of an alternative investment. Investors can purchase a specific amount of hash power for a pre-determined amount of time. Furthermore, there are no additional costs associated with mining; such as electricity and maintenance. The customer pays an upfront amount and in turn receives bitcoin payouts for the length of the contract. There is No need to worry about the increasing difficulty of the network because once the contract period is over, you can renew with an increased amount of hash power to maintain your anticipated profit margin. The opportunity to mine bitcoin will only be available for the next few years. A predetermined amount is set within the network at 21 million bitcoins. Once all have been mined, the network protocol will switch its incentive method to transaction fees only. The technology was designed to be inflation-free so inevitably the demand for a single bitcoin will go up, in turn driving up the price. http://www.gregwriter.com Greg Writer is an executive with over 31 years experience in corporate finance, capital formation, executive level management, mergers, acquisitions, software development and sales/marketing. Crypto and the Evolution of Open Source

36:19
The open source movement enabled so much in computing, including the collaborative building of libraries -- that is, building blocks of code that developers could combine together to build applications. But as these applications grew to massive scale, those libraries ended up being somewhat asymmetrical for "nights-and-weekend" developers (compared to say, the disproportionate resources of a large company with billions of users and big data). Blockchains, however -- enabled by cryptotokens that align incentives among stakeholders -- shift open source development from libraries, to the creation of shared, open, permissionless services. Instead of being siloed and repetitively produced as if from the industrial factory era, any smart contract developed on Ethereum becomes a shared service that can interact with any other service... incentivizing developers to improve on existing services, build on top of them, and enable combinatorial innovation at greater scale than ever before. But if decentralized networks are to win the third era of the internet, how will we resolve challenges such as single-purpose services (another form of consolidation), community conflicts, and other issues? In this video, freelance software engineer (and blockchain app developer) and writer (and urban watcher) Devon Zuegel guest-interviews a16z crypto partners Denis Nazarov and Jesse Walden, the co-founders of Mediachain Labs (which was acquired by Spotify in 2017). They draw on their past experiences leading open source development of a decentralized media attribution protocol for connecting creators to their audience, and what the implications of "services vs. libraries" could be for creatives now. And what about identity, stablecoins and crypto finance, and more? Finally, they extend their previous analogy of cities and network effects and how it fits the idea of libraries vs. services in crypto.
