The Industry Needs Exploration To Stay Afloat - CEO
It is tough to be a silver miner these days, and Kitco News speaks with Excellon CEO Brendan Cahill to get his thoughts on running a mining business under current conditions. “I think we’re getting to the stage where more exploration needs to start happening,” he says, adding that higher silver prices are needed for exploration to pick up again. “That’s how mines are found, that’s how resources are expanded, and that’s how the industry stays afloat.” Looking at silver, Cahill says he expects macroeconomic issues – like currency wars, uncertainty in Europe & Greece – to support silver prices. “I don’t think any of us want to see these low prices for that much longer.” Tune in to our continued coverage of the world’s largest mining convention, PDAC 2015. ‘Women Who Rock’ In Mining - PDAC 2015
Kitco News continues its coverage of PDAC 2015 with Elena Mayer, founder of ‘Women Who Rock,’ a social club for women in the mining industry. Mayer also works in mining for PwC and shares her experiences as a woman in the sector. “Women now represent [only] 10% of the industry,” she says, adding that although the number is growing, it is still quite small. Mayer says she decided to found her own organization after meeting with women at PDAC 2014, and continues to find opportunities, one of which includes an auction event with big names in the mining space. This auction included Pierre Lassonde, Rob McEwen and others, who were all willing to offer mentorship time to the individuals participating in the event. “This idea of auctioning mentorship time actually turned out to be pretty successful,” Mayer says. She adds that although panelists were only supposed to offer one hour of their time, they were actually open to being mentors on a consistent basis. Glenn Mullan | PDAC President discusses 2018 PDAC Convention & How it Benefits the Mining Investor
In a sector such as mining where the investor can either multiple or deplete his or her wealth quickly, knowledge and its wise application is absolutely crucial. The investor’s knowledge is often the determining factor regarding whether the investor is successful or not. One of the best ways to grow in knowledge, to learn about new investing opportunities and to stay on top of current trends is by attending the annual PDAC Convention in Toronto. The PDAC Convention is the world’s largest and premier mining conference attended by people from all over the world. In 2017, the PDAC Convention had over 24,000 attendees from 130 different countries. In this episode, Glenn Mullan, President of the Prospectors & Developers of Canada (PDAC) shares about the upcoming PDAC Convention. Glenn Mullan is the 36th President of the Prospectors & Developers of Canada (PDAC). Learn more and Register at: http://www.pdac.ca/convention Over his +40-year career, Glenn has followed a traditional exploration and prospecting path. He began with contract geophysical surveys, where he caught the bug for being in the North and working in remote locations, then began prospecting and staking mining claims independently while completing his B.Sc. in Geology and Earth Sciences at Concordia University. He later conducted contract exploration geological services, mostly located in Northern Ontario and Québec. Glenn would go on to broker numerous prospector/vendor transactions with arms-length public companies, and form a public company in 1999 that evolved into Ni-Cu-PGE producer that currently employs more than 300 people in Northern Québec. Glenn has a broad spectrum of industry-related experience—across Canada and Africa—including early-stage acquisitions and exploration through PEA, BFS, permitting and mine development-stages, as well as CSR initiatives, financing and corporate development. That said, he much prefers early-stage grassroots exploration in remote locations and near his home base in Val-D’Or, Québec. Currently, Glenn serves as President and CEO of Golden Valley Mines Ltd, where his main area of interest continues to be grassroots early-stage exploration, primarily for base and precious metals in Canada and abroad. Glenn has been a PDAC member for over 40 years, serving on the Executive Committee, Awards Committee, CSR Committee and the Governance & Nominating Committee. Mining Will Be Survival of the Finest, Not Fittest: Rick Rule (Sprott Asset Management) - PDAC 2013
We discuss the future of mining investment with Rick Rule of Sprott Global Resource Investments/ Sprott Asset Management USA as part of our continued coverage of the PDAC 2013 convention. According to the ever-astute Rick Rule, the notion that there isn't enough funding available to the mining industry is a mixed message or misrepresentation of sorts; there is in fact plenty of capital available, thus the actual message to take away from this commonly cited problem at this year's PDAC is that the industry must do a better job of delivering value to the investors. Rule says that investors are becoming much more selective, and that furthermore the generalist investors "have learned a lot of lessons, mostly unfortunate," over the last 3 years. Why survival of the "finest" as opposed to the "fittest"? Rule says that some of the "good guys" aren't fit at the current moment, but that they will nevertheless get funded; according to Rule, the ones that won't get funded will be the "car salesman", who had no place in the mining industry to begin with; the ones with no pedigree, if you will. Hear what the ever insightful contrarian has to say about the future of the mining industry in another great interview by Daniela Cambone. Kitco News, March 6, 2013. Rick Rule: TSXV Not All Carnage and Wreckage
Rick Rule, founder of Sprott Global Resource Investments, is a fixture at mining industry events, and Cambridge House International's 2015 Vancouver Resource Investment Conference was no different. Held at the Vancouver Convention Center from January 18 to 19, it saw Rule sit on a number of panels and talks. Despite his busy schedule, Rule was able to take a few minutes to speak with Resource Investing News about a variety of topics, including what global catalysts investors should be watching for in 2015, whether any juniors present opportunities and just what's going on with the gold price. Highlights include Rule's thoughts on the economy. Though he noted that the US equity markets have been indicating for the last six months that a recovery is in place, he said he hasn't seen that recovery. "If we actually have a recovery, if the equity markets are right, the resource markets will rip. The problem with resources has not been too much supply, it has been very weak, very, very, very tepid global demand. If we see a recovery, if the major equity markets are right and we see a genuine recovery ... then the resource markets will rip," he said. He also commented on the TSXV, stating that about 20 percent of the companies on the exchange have a reason to exist. While that makes 80 percent of them superfluous, it also means that "within that 20 percent there are some truly outstanding companies ... there are some superb people out there doing some superb work. And what's great about a bear market is that these guys are on sale cheap. The best of the best goes on sale with the flotsam and jetsam." Rule concluded, "the idea that everything on the TSXV is carnage or wreckage, that there's no quality, is idiotic."

Together, we will ensure that Canada remains the mining capital of the world -- now and in the future." Federal Government Actions In Support of Mining The Minister pointed to the following actions to highlight what the Harper government has done to strengthen and grow the mining industry: • the Government's plan for Responsible Resource Development, ensuring world-class environmental protection while providing certainty for investors; • a $100 million commitment over the next seven years for the Geo-Mapping for Energy and Minerals (GEM) Plan, helping exploration companies find deposits and create jobs; • extending the Mineral Exploration Tax Credit in Economic Action Plan 2014, which has helped junior exploration companies raise $5 billion in capital; • and pursuing an aggressive international free trade agenda, including the conclusion of a comprehensive free trade deal with the European Union -- the largest economy in the world
FSRN Gold Mining in Haiti Exposes Corruption
As delegates and activists from around the world gather this week in Brazil for the RIO+20 conference on sustainable development, they'll be discussing a broad range of issues, including food security, urban growth, jobs and disaster response. Advocates are also drawing attention to the corporate influence at the UN-backed conference and calling for an alternative to extractive industries, such as mining. According to a draft text of the RIO+20 resolution obtained and published by the Guardian today, delegates will include mining as a way to alleviate poverty and help countries to meet development goals. The text also calls for strong government oversight of mining. Mining plays a big role in many developing countries, including Haiti. As the country continues to recover from the devastating earthquake of 2010 and pervasive government corruption, foreign companies are rushing in to mine for gold. According to a ten-month investigation by local reporters and students with Haiti Grassroots Watch, one third of the land in northern Haiti is under exploration, research or extraction by foreign companies and some residents are worried about environmental destruction. One of those residents is Elie Florestan from Grand Bois. "I think a mine might cause lots of problems for us. They say the mine would use our river. They say our water might become polluted. And that many families will be displaced." Two of the foreign companies most aggressively pushing for mining are Eurasian Minerals, based in Canada, and Newmont, based in the US. According to Haiti Grassroots Watch, two Haitian ministers recently signed a "Memorandum of Understanding" with Newmont and Eurasian that says the companies can begin drilling at one of their sites, a violation of Haitian law, which states no drilling can occur without a mining convention. The mining companies have promised to provide much-needed jobs in the area and some residents expressed support for the projects. Anthony Silvestre, a resident of Morne Bossa said some of the land in his area was rich with the mineral. "We feel very strongly about something: we like foreigners a lot. When foreigners come and work with us we're proud and it's beautiful. If they make a mine at Morne Bossa it would be as if God himself came down from heaven." But communities in nearby Dominican Republic are already confronting the costs of mining. The Canadian companies Barrick and Goldcorp are teaming up to develop an open pit mine. Barrick has already been forced to clean up a river polluted with sulphuric acid from a previous government-backed project in the area. Some residents described being displaced from their land for the new mine. "They moved us to this neighbohood, with nothing, no jobs no land. We're farmers! But we have nowhere to plant except the yard." In Haiti, residents and community journalists are organizing to demand more transparency in the process. But the pace is picking up. One of the mining firms, Eurasian Minerals, has collected 44,000 samples and Newmont is considering at least five mine sites. The government's role has also been called into question. A former Minister of the Economy and Finances is now a paid consultant for Newmont and residents have struggled to get information about the projects. Arnolt Jean is a farmer in Lakwev. He calls the government irresponsible. "Yes, the country is poor. But what's underground could make us rich. If the government did what it was supposed to do, and exploit the minerals that are underground, the country would not be poor, but since what's underground stays underground, rich people figure out how to exploit the minerals, so they can become richer. Those who live on top of the ground stay poor. Those who exploit what's underground get even richer." Despite millions of dollars of aid money pouring into Haiti, the government still lacks resources to adequately monitor mining or oversee future projects. Alkane Resources on-time and on-budget with their gold and rare earth projects
December 19, 2013 —Tracy Weslosky, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of InvestorIntel interviews Ian Chalmers, Managing Director of Alkane Resources Ltd. (ASX: ALK | OTCQX: ALKEF), one of Australia's premier multi-commodity mining and exploration companies focused on gold, zirconium, niobium, and rare earths (both light and heavy rare earths) in the Central West region of New South Wales, Australia. Currently Alkane has two projects headed towards production -- The Tomingley Gold Project (February 2014) and the Dubbo Zirconia Project (a rare earths projects advancing towards a 2016 production timeline). Tracy continues her conversation with Ian and discusses Alkane's soon-to-be-producing Tomingley Gold Project (a near 1-million ounce gold resource, slated to produce -- on time and on budget -- in mere weeks), as well as updates InvestorIntel viewers on the Dubbo Zirconia Project. Ian starts: "We think we are at the bottom of the gold price. I think it's very similar to the rare earths in that I believe we're at the bottom. I think that even what happens in the US in the next 6 months, is probably already factored into the gold price. With gold, what you've got to have is an effective cost structure that enables you to make profits at this current gold price... and luckily that's where we're at!" Ian mentioned that the Australian dollar is trading lower, giving domestic producers a better gold price, and explains that one can make money in gold, but that "you've got to be pretty sharp". Tracy noted that Alkane has "some of the most substantial leadership in the entire industry" and confirmed that "we are looking at revenue from gold, starting in February of next year, correct?" Ms. Weslosky also referenced the likelihood of "potential production rare earth elements as early as 2016 -- and that's about as fast as anybody is going to come online for producing rare earths." Ian addressed one peculiarity about the rare earth market, in that you just can't just have a process you think works and then go sign off-take agreements, but rather you need to actually take product to your potential customers (hence production from the ANSTO Demonstration Pilot Plant, running for the last 5 years). "We've got the chemistry really right," explains Chalmers. He notes that the recent improvement in REE recoveries -- which Alkane has been highlighting -- has come about because they had the foresight to build a Pilot Plant and conduct recovery practice and research along the way. Tracy remarks that a number of large (high CAPEX) players are seeking construction monies, during a very difficult funding environment. Alkane reports having AUD$60 million in the bank, and will need another AUD$30 million to get Tomingley (gold) into production. However, as Ian explains, once production gets underway, "the cash starts coming back." The capital costs for the Dubbo Zirconia Project, including contingencies, come in at AUD$1 billion and the Alkane team has been working on funding for most of this year, with good advisors from Sumitomo Mitsui Bank (Japan), and Credit Suisse. Ian believes that "we think it will take us much of next year to put that into a package that we can sell, and go out to markets and say 'Yes, we've got the financing in place'. You're right, it's not easy, but I think attitudes are changing, and for good projects, the funding is there." Ian concluded that the middle of next year "will be a very, very big point for us. If the market has become friendlier toward good projects, it is likely that we might start seeing some decent returns in the share price again."
