MSF are supporting award winning production company Mediadante to create a game for iOS and Android based on the work of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) so you can experience what’s it’s like saving lives under extreme conditions with only limited supplies.

This game is unique in its capacity to enable players to help real people from the other side of the planet through an easy to use ‘donate’ button - money from which will be given directly to MSF.
We all sit on the sofa or bus, watch a news clip from the other side of the world and think “that is awful,” yet very few of us find a way to make a real difference. The staff of Doctors Without Borders risk their own lives to save the lives of people far, far away every single day. Mediadante (BAFTA-Nominated producers of “Escape from Isis”) want to work with YOU to make a powerful game that, just by playing, gives all of us the chance to make a difference.
What is the game?
This mobile game gives players the chance to experience for themselves the unthinkable situations faced by humanitarian workers on the frontline of conflicts, epidemics, and natural disasters. Based on the work of the medical aid organisation, Doctors Without Borders (MSF), this is a highly playable, slightly addictive (in a good way) game, that gives everyone the chance to make an impact through the sharing of knowledge and direct donations.
Before we get into details we want to make clear that ultimately we want the game to be shaped, invented and reinvented by you, the gamer. We have established a broad framework for the game but everything from the final title of the game, the storyline, scenarios, and even the logo, will be created collaboratively with our community of gamers.
The basic gaming dynamic could be similar to Plague Inc. , This War of Mine or The Sims or any other real time strategy game in which players need to solve a problem with limited resources, while up against forces beyond their control.
There are different characters to choose from, (different roles in MSF) and multiple scenarios in which you could find yourself.
The game is set in an imaginary region of the world where every potential disaster is possible.
Through different challenges the user must learn the game controls and the different activities of each character (all professionals used by MSF on its missions: Doctors, Nurses, Constructors, Logistics Specialists, Communication Officers)
Then you step into the shoes of one of those people - you create, build and then become your own hero. You have to make life and death decisions.
Once the first disaster hits they will keep coming and growing in difficulty as the game evolves.
Each scenario or ‘mission’ is introduced with an in-game video feed that may include real-world archive footage of past emergencies, helping to ground the imaginary world of the game in the reality of the world it reflects. Gamers can click through to the forum to find out more about what happened in the past, giving them context and content to help them play the game more efficiently and discuss real world events and problems.
The user must also build different facilities; field hospitals, shelters, refugee camps water and sanitation stations to assist their mission.
Although the game is set in a fictional world, it draws upon the rich seam of real life stories and experiences of MSF staff, responding to events such as the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, the humanitarian crisis in Syria, and the earthquakes in Nepal and Haiti
The physical, medical, moral and logistical challenges Doctors Without Borders face under extreme time pressure are very much real. Their staff have a set of tools (vehicles, medical equipment, ‘inflatable’ hospitals etc) and resources (medicines, fuel, staff etc) which they have to use and manage a with great care and expertise. They also make life or death decisions such as where and when to intervene in a humanitarian emergency, that determines the fate of thousands.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare.
