Mining frequent itemsets is an active area in data mining that aims at searching interesting relationships between items in databases. It can be used to address to a wide variety of problems such as discovering association rules, sequential patterns, correlations and much more. A transactional database is a data set of transactions, each composed of a set of items, called an itemset (frequently occurring in a database). Existing methods often generate a huge set of potential high utility item sets and their mining performance is degraded consequently. There is a lacking of mining performance with these huge number of potential high utility itemsets; higher processing Time too. Two novel algorithms as well as a compact data structure for efficiently discovering high utility itemsets are proposed. High utility itemsets is maintained in a tree-based data structure named UP-Tree (Utility Pattern Tree). Implementing mining process through Discarding Local Unpromising Items and Decreasing Local Node Utilities strategies. An experimental result predicts that not only reduces the number of candidates effectively but also outperforms other algorithms DIVYA BHARATHY.M (VMC 791) Department of Master of Computer Applications Veltech Multi Tech Engg College.

A Generic Framework for Mining Top-k Representative Subgraph Patterns

Mining subgraph patterns is an active area of research. Till now, the focus has primarily been on mining all subgraph patterns in the given database. However, due to the exponential subgraph search space, the number of patterns mined, typically, is too large for any human mediated analysis. Consequently, deriving insights from the mined patterns is hard for domain scientists. In addition, subgraph pattern mining is posed in multiple forms: the function that models if a subgraph is a pattern varies based on the application and the database could be over multiple graphs or a single, large graph. A natural question that therefore arises is the following: Given any graph database type and a subgraph importance function, can we develop a technique to mine k subgraph patterns that best represent all other patterns of interest? We will discuss a generic framework called RESLING that answers this question. Experiments show that RESLING is up to 20 times more representative of the pattern space and 2 orders of magnitude faster than the state-of-the-art techniques. However, setting min_util appropriately is a difficult problem for users. Generally speaking, finding an appropriate minimum utility threshold by trial and error is a tedious process for users. If min_util is set too low, too many HUIs will be generated, which may cause the mining process to be very inefficient. On the other hand, if min_util is set too high, it is likely that no HUIs will be found. In this paper, we address the above issues by proposing a new framework for top-k high utility itemset mining, where k is the desired number of HUIs to be mined. Two types of efficient algorithms named TKU (mining Top-K Utility itemsets) and TKO (mining Top-K utility itemsets in One phase) are proposed for mining such itemsets without the need to set min_util. We provide a structural comparison of the two algorithms with discussions on their advantages and limitations. Empirical evaluations on both real and synthetic datasets show that the performance of the proposed algorithms is close to that of the optimal case of state-of-the-art utility mining algorithms.

An Efficient Projection Based Indexing Approach For Mining High Utility Itemsets

Recently, utility mining has widely been discussed in the field of data mining. It finds high utility item sets by considering both profits and quantities of items in transactional data sets. However, most of the existing approaches are based on the principle of level wise processing, as in the traditional two-phase utility mining algorithm to find a high utility item sets. In this paper, we propose an efficient utility mining approach that adopts an indexing mechanism to speed up the execution and reduce the memory requirement in the mining process. The indexing mechanism can imitate the traditional projection algorithms to achieve the aim of projecting sub-databases for mining. In addition, a pruning strategy is also applied to reduce the number of unpromising item sets in mining. Finally, the experimental results on synthetic data sets and on a real data set show the superior performance of the proposed approach.

Anonymized Data Koray Mancuhan - Purdue University Oct 21, 2015 Abstract Privacy has been a hot issue since early 2000s, in particular with the rise of social network and data outsourcing. Data privacy is a big concern in data outsourcing because it involves sharing personal data with third parties. In this talk, I will give an introduction to data privacy on topics such as privacy standards, data anonymization techniques, and data anonymization usage in data outsourcing and data mining. Then, I will present our work in data mining using anonymized data. We propose a data publisher-third party decision tree learning method for outsourced private data. The privacy model is anatomization/fragmentation: the third party sees data values, but the link between sensitive and identifying information is encrypted with a key known only to data publisher. Data publishers have limited processing and storage capability. Both sensitive and identifying information thus are stored on the third parties. The approach presented also retains most processing at the third parties, and data publisher-side processing is amortized over predictions made by the data publishers. Experiments on various datasets show that the method produces decision trees approaching the accuracy of a non-private decision tree, while substantially reducing the data publisher's computing resource requirements. About the Speaker Koray is a PhD student in the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University. He is currently a member of the privacy preserving data mining lab under the supervision of Chris Clifton. His research elaborates the data mining models from the anonymized data. The challenge in his research is the injected uncertainty into data because of anonymization methods. In most cases, uncertainty slows down the data mining models and require special mechanisms to exploit noisy data. His work includes learning algorithms such as k-NN classification, SVM classification, decision tree classification and frequent itemset mining. Koray received his masters degree in Computer Science from Purdue University and his undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering from Galatasaray University. Throughout his masters degree, he studied on data mining and social fairness, and authored papers in this topic. Before joining to Purdue CS, he did his research in semantic web area. Mining Probabilistically Frequent Sequential Patterns in Large      | IEEE | IEEE projects 2014

Data uncertainty is inherent in many real-world applications such as environmental surveillance and mobile tracking. Mining sequential patterns from inaccurate data, such as those data arising from sensor readings and GPS trajectories, is important for discovering hidden knowledge in such applications. In this paper, we propose to measure pattern frequentness based on the possible world semantics. We establish two uncertain sequence data models abstracted from many real-life applications involving uncertain sequence data, and formulate the problem of mining probabilistically frequent sequential patterns (or p-FSPs) from data that conform to our models. However, the number of possible worlds is extremely large, which makes the mining prohibitively expensive. Inspired by the famous PrefixSpan algorithm, we develop two new algorithms, collectively called U-PrefixSpan, for p-FSP mining. U-PrefixSpan effectively avoids the problem of “possible worlds explosion”, and when combined with our four pruning and validating methods, achieves even better performance. We also propose a fast validating method to further speed up our U-PrefixSpan algorithm. The efficiency and effectiveness of U-PrefixSpan are verified through extensive experiments on both real and synthetic datasets.
