The company was founded in 1926 in Switzerland as Südelektra, an infrastructure and electricity projects concern operating in Latin America. In 1990, Marc Rich + Co AG became its majority shareholder. In the 1990s it diversified into mining and disposed of its non-core businesses. It was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2002 at which time it acquired Glencore's coal assets in Australia and South Africa. In 2003, it doubled in size with the A$2.9 billion takeover of Australian copper, zinc and lead miner MIM Holdings. However, it failed in a 2005 bid for another Australian miner, WMC Resources, which was captured by BHP Billiton, the world's biggest mining company. In 2004 Xstrata closed its recently purchased Windimurra Vanadium plant in Western Australia which had the effect of increasing Vanadium prices received for Xstrata's other Vanadium mines around the world. Many hundreds of people were put out of work and now many Western Australians are not keen to see Xstrata involved in other mining activities in the state because of this action. In August 2005, Xstrata purchased a 19.9% stake in Falconbridge Limited, a diversified Canadian mining company producing copper, nickel, aluminum, lead and zinc. Following a contested take-over battle with Inco Limited, Xstrata successfully acquired the remaining 80.1% of Falconbridge in August 2006. In 2006, The Northern Territory and Australian Governments approved the expansion of the McArthur River zinc mine, near the popular fishing destination of Borrooloola. The expansion involves diversion of the river to a new 5.5 km channel, to allow construction of a massive open-cut pit in the existing river. On behalf of the Traditional Owners of the region -- the Yanyuwa, Mara, Garrawa and Gurdanji peoples -- the Northern Land Council launched a legal challenge to the Northern Territory Government's decision to approve the mining of and diversion of the McArthur River. On 1 May 2007, The Northern Territory Supreme Court ruled in favour of the Northern Land Council to stop the expansion. On 3 May 2007, the Northern Territory government rushed through retrospective legislation to overrule the court decision and allow the open-cut mine to proceed. On 28 May 2012 violent repression of local residents by the police in the province of Espinar, Cuzco, Peru, caused the deaths of two civilians. The inhabitants protested against the pollution of the water sources caused by Xstrata's mining activities. The government has decreed a State of Emergency and suspended civil liberties guaranteed in the Constitution. Since the turn of the millennium it has developed from a small player into one of the world's largest diversified mining groups with the help of a series of large acquisitions. In 2008, its degree of transnationality according to the Transnationality Index was 93.2 percent and ranked first place. It has major operations/projects in eighteen countries (Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Jamaica, New Caledonia, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Peru, South Africa, Spain, Tanzania, the United States and the United Kingdom) and it is a major producer of copper, coking coal, thermal coal, nickel, ferrochrome, vanadium and zinc. It has smaller scale involvement in aluminum, gold, lead and silver. It also has interests in platinum group metals through its 24.9% stake in Lonmin. In July 2012, Xstrata opened its first office in mainland China. China accounts for up to one-third of Xstrata's global sales. The office is located in Shanghai. Bulga Coal Xstrata are currently the operators of the Bulga Coal Mine in NSW, Australia. Xstrata have managed this mine on behalf of the Bulga Coal Pty Ltd shareholders since 2001 when it purchased Enex Resources Limited from Glencore International AG. The Bulga Coal mine site serves as the headquarters for Xstrata Coal's NSW division. In 2007 Xstrata Coal, based in Sydney, bought Anvil Hill Coal Mine from Centennial Coal Company. Since the purchase of the Anvil Hill Coal Mine Xstrata Coal, an Australia-based subsidiary of Xstrata PLC, has come under media scrutiny numerous times in regards to the company's management of the pre-mining stage of the mining project, most notably scrutinised has been the community relations approach of Xstrata Coal towards the local community, with allegations of misleading actions on behalf of the company being cited in the local and regional media, and other regional and local communication channels. This included the setting up of a local action group in opposition to the mine named WAG (Wybong Action Group). Xstrata's A$274 million expansion plan for the George Fisher mine at Mount Isa was approved by the government of Queensland Mindanao, Philippines Xstrata's $5.9-million copper-gold mine in the Philippines' southern island of Mindanao has been delayed three years to 2019 due to security concerns and regulatory obstacles set by the local government.

What Coal Mining Hydrogeology tells us about the Real Risks of Fracking_London Lecture_May 2016
Development of shale gas by hydraulic fracturing (‘fracking’) is opposed by campaigners who hypothesise (amongst other things) that potable ground water supplies could be polluted by upward migration of fractures and any fluids they contain. There are very strong reasons for doubting this hypothesis, not least because migration of fractures to prolific aquifers would be highly unlikely to lead to pollution, but almost certain to result in drowning of the shale gas wells, rendering them unusable. Hence, despite having contrasting motivations, shale gas developers and environmental guardians turn out to have a strong common interest in avoiding inter-connection to aquifers. There is in fact a century-long analogue for such a ‘confluence’ of interests, provided by the history of longwall coal mining beneath the sea and major aquifers. Where large-scale mining proceeded from the surface downwards, major hydraulic inter-connection of shallow and deep zones did indeed result in widespread water pollution. However, where new mines were developed at depth without any connections to shallow old workings), complete hydraulic isolation from the near-surface hydrogeological environment was successfully maintained. This was despite the fact that longwall mining produced far greater stratal disruption than shale gas fracking ever could. A detailed example is presented from the successful operation of the Selby Coalfield beneath one of the UK’s main aquifers. This profound and sustained historical analogue provides a very clear lesson: given the lack of hydrogeological connectivity to shallow aquifers, shale gas fracking per se cannot contaminate shallow ground water. Provided operators observe long-established laws governing hydrocarbon wells and associated surface operations, other hydrogeological risks will also be minimal. Opponents of shale gas developments should therefore focus attention on more realistic potential impacts, most of which are familiar from almost any planning application, such as increased truck traffic on minor roads. Speaker Biography Paul Younger (University of Glasgow) Paul L Younger FREng holds the Rankine Chair of Engineering and is Professor of Energy Engineering at the University of Glasgow. He was formerly Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Engagement at Newcastle University, where he also established and led the Sir Joseph Swan Institute for Energy Research and, subsequently, the Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability. Strike Me Pink
Maritime Union of Australia MUA More than 400 Sydney wharfies at the Patrick Terminal at Port Botany were today kitted out in new hot pink hard hats bearing the McGrath Foundation logo, proving once and for all that real men do wear pink. The teaming of the Maritime Union and Patrick Terminals to adopt the pink safety helmets came through workers wanting to show their support of the McGrath Foundation on the job site every day. Co-founder and Chairman of the Foundation, Glenn McGrath, on hand at the terminal, was thrilled to be able to help the Patrick dock workers show their support through the new hats. Jane would have loved to have seen the Patrick's wharfies stepping up to the docks in their McGrath Pink Hard Hats, to set such a good example for other Aussie blokes - that it takes a real man to wear pink - one of Jane's favourite sayings, McGrath said. As experienced at the Sydney Test in January, we couldn't be more proud to see Australian men wanting to take a stand to wear pink to promote breast awareness and show their support for the women in their life, as breast cancer is not just a women's issue, it affects families, he said. Straddle driver and MUA member, Aaron More, found his inspiration for the initiative watching that Sydney Test and initially looked at more traditional fund raising ideas such as gold coin donations or BBQ s. But we actually really wanted something that showed our support 365 days of the year, rather than a one-off token gesture. The McGrath Pink Hard Hats will be a reminder each and every day that we support the McGrath Foundation cause and are helping educate Australian women and their partners, said More. Crane driver and one of seven women who work at the terminal, Mich-Elle Myers, said that the female workers at Port Botany were inspired by the men's decision. Some of our men have experienced breast cancer first hand, through their sisters, mothers and girlfriends. We are so proud of what they have done, Myers said. Terminal HR Manager of Patrick Terminals, John Fletcher, issued a challenge to workers from terminals across Australia, to prove they are also real men. Its our hope that Patrick's dock workers will stand out from the crowd in their new McGrath Pink Hard Hats reminding Australians from all walks of life that breast awareness leads to early detection, which can save lives. McGrath also announced today the release of McGrath Pink Safety Vest, with Visy Recycling the first company to issue the vests for all of their on-site visitors and contractors to their plants the only pink safety vest available which meets all Australian Safety Standards. While the new McGrath pink safety range will promote valuable breast awareness, a donation will be made to the McGrath Foundation for each hard hat and safety vest sold, helping fund additional McGrath Breast Care Nurses across Australia. Glencore confirms sale of mines in Australia and Chile
Embattled mining giant Glencore said it has started the sales process for two of its copper mines in Australia and Chile. The firm's Australian copper mine in Cobar, New South Wales, and its Lomas Bayas copper mine in the Atacama desert in Chile are for sale. Glencore is attempting to reduce $30bn (£19.5bn) of debt created by its 2013 takeover of Xstrata. Its Hong Kong-listed shares have also fallen some 55% this year. Trading of the firm's Hong Kong-listed shares were halted earlier on Monday ahead of the announcement. "The sale process is in response to Glencore receiving a number of unsolicited expressions of interest for these mines from various potential buyers," the firm said in an email. "This will allow potential buyers to bid to purchase either one or both of the mines and may or may not result in a sale," it added. The Cobar operation is a high-grade underground mine and plant, while the Lomas Bayas operation is a low-cost, open pit mine. In Australia, Glencore has 19 mining complexes across the country, including coal, copper, nickel and zinc operations, port facilities, offices and agricultural businesses, among others. It is one of the biggest exporters of Australian grain. In Chile, Glencore owns and has stakes in several mines, as well as a hydro-power project. Last week, the firm announced it would dramatically cut its zinc production. The move comes amid a 30% fall in the price of zinc in recent months. The company said it would cut 500,000 tonnes of zinc production - or 4% of the world's total supply. Most of the zinc-related cutbacks will be in Australia, where more than 500 jobs will be lost, as well as South America and Kazakhstan. As it attempts to reduce its debt, the firm has also cut copper production and suspended dividend payments to shareholders. It is also issuing new shares to raise money.

Kenya Miners Part 2: Crushing, grinding the ore, and sluicing gold the traditional African way
This is our second video in our five part series of our trip to Kenya to install a shaker table to help eliminate the use of mercury by the smalls scale gold miners. We met with Julius who is the president of the MICA gold mining cooperative and donated a shaker table to MICA to show the miners a different technology for gold concentration other than the use of mercury. Once the shaker table was set up the miners were amazed! The shaker table on average recovered 2-3 times more gold from the same material they had been processing with their blanket/burlap sluices and mercury use. The table can also process the material up to 10 times faster than the blanket/burlap sluices. The result being in some cases 30 times more gold for the miners in the same amount of processing time. Stay tuned for more videos of our trip to Kenya. For more information about our shaker table or any of our other products email us at [email protected] or give us a call at 360-595-4445. http://www.mbmmllc.com

Eurasia MD says gold tailings project good value
Eurasia Mining (LON: EUA) Managing Director Christian Schaffalitzsky tells Proactive Investors the main problem during the minerals boom in the early 2000s was that project costs were too high, especially in Russia, but now there are ideal opportunities for companies the size of Eurasia. "Now with the recession in mining, projects have become available which are far more attractive price-wise" he said. The Russia-focused miner said on Monday it had signed a head of terms with OOO Metallurg Complect to secure the right to negotiate to buy up to 67% of the Semenovsky gold tailings project. Schaffalitzsky said the background work needed will be completed within three to six months depending on licencing issues and the main reason the company is looking at the project is because they anticipate a good rate of return, in excess of 60%. "It means that the gold price can be weaker and still the project will go ahead and make some money for the operators" he said.

Recession Busters
Maritime Union of Australia MUA More than 200 wharfies at Port Botany are sacrificing hours and pay to save the jobs of casual workers after a sharp drop in container traffic. Container movements fell from 52,000 a month before Christmas - when the port operator DP World piled on large numbers of casual staff - to just 27,000 a month as the financial crisis took hold. Casuals were hit hard, as their income also halved. Facing redundancies, the Maritime Union of Australia approached DP World with a proposal for 250 full-time rostered staff to reduce their hours from 36 to 35 hours a week, and give up a weekend shift each month.
