Anger at Australia mining tax
Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe The Australian government has proposed a "super-profits" tax for giant mining corporations in its annual budget released on Tuesday. The country escaped the global economic slump almost completely unscathed, thanks largely to its massive mining industry. A proposal to impose a 40 per cent tax on "super-profits" made by mining companies has now prompted an uproar among industry players. Kimberley Dinosaurs
Written in the sandstone, along the rocky platforms of the Dampier Peninsula in remote north-western Australia, is a dinosaur story from 130 million years ago. Here, palaeontologists have recorded the track types of more than sixteen different dinosaurs including the biggest to ever walk the earth. The tracks are also culturally significant in that they are woven into the Aboriginal songlines and creation stories. Mark Horstman hunts for dinosaurs in the Kimberley, to see fossil footprints never revealed before. But just as science begins to appreciate their significance, the integrity of these diverse trackways are threatened by the footprint of Woodside gas hub proposal. Bremer Bay wave glider proposal https://www.thinkable.org/
Using wave gliders to understand the oceanography and plankton ecology of the Bremer Bay Canyon, Western Australia Paul G. Thomson, Alessandra Mantovanelli and Charitha B. Pattiaratchi Australian National Facility for Ocean Gliders, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering and The UWA Oceans Institute, The University of Western Australia, 35 Stirling Highway, Perth WA 6007, Australia Australia’s South-West Marine Region can be classified as an oligotrophic environment because of the dominance of the warm, low nutrient and low salinity waters of the southward flowing Leeuwin current. The Leeuwin current’s presence also inhibits large-scale upwelling, common to other eastern ocean basins, despite the upwelling favourable prevailing winds. Despite the oligotrophic dominance, regions of high productivity occur as a result of localised upwelling triggered by surface and subsurface current systems, strong winds and topography (headlands, islands, submarine canyons, etc.). The Bremer Bay canyon on the south coast of Western Australia stands out for its apparent enhanced primary productivity during the summer months which attracts marine megafauna, reportedly including killer whales, sperm whales, long-finned pilot whales, great white sharks, blue sharks and giant squid. Through this aggregation of marine life, the region has become popular as a tourist destination and a stage for an internationally acclaimed television nature documentary. However, most environmental knowledge of this region is anecdotal, and very little is known of the oceanographic conditions and primary productivity required to attract and support such an abundance of megafauna. Our proposal is to better understand the oceanographic conditions and primary productivity required to support the seasonal aggregation of the marine megafauna in the Bremer Bay canyon, providing scientific evidence for further initiatives of conservation in the region. Two Liquid Robotics wave gliders will be deployed in the region to make sustained oceanographic and plankton measurements over a 2 month period between February and March 2016, the optimal period for the megafauna aggregation. The wave gliders will perform predetermined transects across the region and on detecting an event, such as an upwelling or phytoplankton bloom, one glider will be reassigned to follow the event closely. The wave glider sensor payloads will be designed to measure seawater conductivity, temperature, depth (CTD), ocean currents (ADCP), and nutrient concentrations (Satlantic Suna V2). Phytoplankton biomass and concentrations of other particles and hydrocarbons will be measured by a fluorometer, while primary productivity will be measured directly using an in situ FIRe (Fluorescence Induction and Relaxation) System. Zooplankton will be identified to the highest possible taxonomic level and counted using a video plankton recorder under design by Fastwave Communications in Perth, Western Australia, our Wave Glider integration partner. A standard wave glider weather station will provide air temperature, wind speed and direction, and barometric pressure data. As upwelling events may not necessarily be expressed in surface waters, we will deploy a Sea Glider with standard oceanographic instruments to measure subsurface processes up to 1000 m depth to complement the wave glider measurements. This project is important for several reasons. The Bremer Bay canyon is just one of 32 known canyons along the south west coast of Western Australia. Understanding oceanographic processes and primary productivity at the Bremer Bay canyon will help us understand primary and secondary production along larger sections of our coastline. Furthermore, Bremer Bay region has leases for oil and gas exploration and this study can contribute to understand this valuable marine ecosystem and assist policy makers in determining whether the region requires protection.

Schultz/Jauch Mining Proposal's Poison Pill
On the surface, the Schultz/Jauch mining bill is devoid of much of what the proponents of a new iron mine in Northern Wisconsin were looking for.

There is no certain timeline for the permitting process. It allows outside groups to sue to stop a mine from opening, and it adds to the bureaucracy.

Dig deeper, and you notice a key provision is also missing--an exemption from DNR recycling assessments, which could add tens of millions to the project's cost and thus derail the plan altogether.

Déjà vu as Labor’s gold royalty hike killed off again
The Nationals WA have again put the McGowan Government’s gold royalty hike to the sword, saving thousands of jobs in regional Western Australia. For the second time in seven weeks, The Nationals four upper house MPs voted to kill off Labor’s proposed increase to the gold royalty rate in the Legislative Council. Leader Mia Davies said the McGowan Government’s standing in the gold industry had been tarnished by Treasurer Ben Wyatt’s unrelenting attack on the sector. “The Treasurer has twice now tried to introduce a gold royalty hike without a skerrick of consultation with industry,” Ms Davies said. “Let’s not forget this is the same Government which before the election promised no new taxes for West Australians. The same Premier who just three years ago said a gold royalty increase would cost jobs. “The gold industry and the wider public can no longer trust a word this Government says. They are sneaky, they are dishonest and they are out to harm regional Western Australia." Member for Mining and Pastoral Jacqui Boydell said The Nationals’ commitment to the gold sector never wavered. “The Nationals have now killed off three attempts to increase the gold royalty rate, including a proposal during our time as an alliance partner in Government,” Ms Boydell said. “Each time the gold industry has been able to rely on The Nationals to back them in. We will continue to be a strong advocate for the gold industry and protect the jobs of the sector’s tens of thousands of direct and indirect employees.” Ms Davies said gold miners had considerably smaller margins than the iron ore sector and if the Premier was serious about budget repair he would sit down with BHP and Rio Tinto. “Instead of relentlessly targeting the gold sector, the Premier needs to grow a backbone and engage two companies which are playing by different rules,” Ms Davies said. “BHP and Rio are cashing in on half-century old State Agreements which no longer reflect modern day economic practices or realty. “It’s time to open up the legacy iron ore State Agreements and ensure Western Australia is getting our fair share for our iron ore.”

Pantoro Ltd in the process of upgrading to produce up to 100,000 gold ounces per year
Pantoro Ltd (ASX:PNR) managing director Paul Cmrlec speaks to Proactive Investors about the gold producer's operations at the multi-faceted Halls Creek Project, in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia. At the original Nicolsons underground mine, new equipment is being deployed to take annual gold production from 55,000 ounces to 80,000-100,000 ounces. "It's been a really strong ore body. We've had in the order of 1,500 ounces per vertical meter the whole way down, and that's approximately double what we started with, so it's been a great performer," says Cmrlec. Speaking about other key areas in Halls Creek Project, Cmrlec says, "we finished open pit mining at Wagtail in December last year. The start of this year has been all about getting all the approvals to start underground mining. We've continued drilling there through the entire period as well, so recently put a new mineral resource and ore reserve update out... within the next one to two weeks we'll be taking the first development rounds at Wagtail." In the wider area, Pantoro Ltd has picked up two historical projects, Grant's Creek and Mary River, as an exploration play. The company aims to have its processing facility at Nicolsons, which is the only one of its type for 300 kilometers, being fed by multiple sources. "We've been amongst the lowest-cost producers in Australia for the last several quarters. We expect that to continue on, and we should see the cost decreasing further as our plant upgrade kicks in... we've got a lot of major projects wrapping up as we speak, and that's going to see us in a very good position in the second half of this year," says Cmrlec.
