The Big Eye Mine and its cabin remain a very popular hiking and jeeping destination in the far reaches of the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge and its Castle Dome Mountains in Yuma County, Arizona. This particular video of my documentation and exploration of Arizona's Big Eye Mine was originally filmed and posted in August of 2012. I am re-posting the same video again after making some minor edits for continuity and running time. This video highlights the well-maintained cabin, the many various artifacts in it, and provides some history behind the mine. I also explore and document the main Big Eye Mine tunnel as well as an upper level higher on the mountain. Enjoy this fascinating glimpse back into our mining history! #ExploringAbandonedMines #AbandonedMines #MineExploring #UndergroundExploration #BigEyeMine

This was probably my favorite place to explore ever. Hidden in the Arizona mountains sets Ruby, AZ the most well preserved ghost towns to exist. Also i hate that i must say this however the town was abandoned in the 40's but it was founded over 150 years ago making a 200 + year old town. So before you comment understand that. Spent part of the day exploring the Green Quartz Mine site near the town of Oatman, AZ. It was my first time in this territory, so part of the trip was used to scout future mines to explore. The Green Quartz Mine dates back to the early 1900s. The site has many vertical shafts of varying depth as well as one small tunnel. Nearby is the old mining town of Oatman that I briefly explored by driving down its main street. Oatman definitely is a classic American, old-west town that still retains its historical roots. Oatman is definitely a must-see if you're in the area! #ExploringAbandonedMines #AbandonedMines #MineExploring #UndergroundExploration #Oatman

The Verde Combination claim is set in the high hills adjacent to the historic mining town of Jerome, Arizona. Much of Jerome and the surrounding mines is and has been private for many, many years. The area is known for its deposits of copper, silver, gold and lead. The Verde Combination was so named for the Verde Combination company who originally located the mines.

Robson's Mining World was an amazing historic mine to visit! Tons of Old Mining Equipment, historic vehicles, famous works of art, unique buildings, Yavapai Apache Petroglyphs, a Saguaro Cactus forest in the Sonoran desert, and more! This place had so much to see at it! Tons of old engines, historic trucks, a wagon from the 1750's, rocks, gems, old books including a Mark Twain first edition, old buildings, and beautiful scenery. It's only about 25 minutes from Wickenburg, Arizona. Robson's Ranch & Mining Camp is one of the best preserved original mining claims in Arizona. The first claim to mine was in 1917 and was called the Gold Leaf Mine. In 1924, the mine changed hands to Ned Creighton who renamed it the Nella-Meda Mine. Take the time to go to Robson's Mining World! One of my favorite historic sites in Arizona!

The Arrastra Mine is a small set of workings on some likely very good gold deposits. This was a small scale mining operation, thought to have started in the late 1800s. It was likely worked intermittently until it was shut down in 1941 by the War Act. Sometime in the early 1960s, a miner by the name of George took the claim over and started working it. George stayed until he passed away in 1987 or 1989. The claim has a series of old buildings on it. The basic brick structure has been added on with awnings, an old camper, and various walls and doors. There is also an old workshop that is filled with old magazines and reading material. Many old implements that may have been used for mining. In addition, there is an early 1980s small pickup truck.

Mining Gold in Arizona - Is It Legal? // Is mining for gold legal? If you are looking to take up mining for gold as a hobby you need to look into being part of some mining clubs or understand the right of claims within your area. Although gold deposits are popularly associated with the western US, gold has widespread occurrence across the country. In the eastern US, a zone of lode and placer gold deposits extends in the Piedmont region from Alabama to Maryland. North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia and Alabama have many former gold mines and current prospecting sites. These states were the main source of US gold before the California gold discovery (see Gold mining in the United States). Recreational gold miners have also had success in the northeastern US. Small amounts of gold have been found in streams draining glacial deposits in the Midwest. Gold prospecting and mining activities allowed on public lands vary with the agency and the location. Gold pans and shovels are commonly allowed, but sluice boxes and suction dredges may be prohibited in some areas. There are public mining areas in many states, and prospecting may allow one to stake a gold placer claim or other type of mining claim in certain areas. Some public lands have been set aside for recreational gold panning. Some private land owners also give permission for small-scale gold mining. The largest true California gold nugget, known as the "Dogtown nugget," weighed 54 troy pounds (20 kg), and was found in Magalia, California. A 195-pound troy (73 kg) mass of gold mixed with quartz was also found. Alaska has many sites for the prospector, both public and private. This might not be an easy mine to get to, but the effort is well worth it. In the first video of this series, we explore the amazingly well-preserved desert mining camp and follow the rails around the mountain peak. The innovations on display at this abandoned mine are truly a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of miners. I still do not know what that - presumably wind-driven - device made mostly out of old washing machines is… I sure hope that a viewer can weigh in on that one. I know that I said it several times in the video, but there was so much stuff at this mine that it was hard to take it all in – all of the engines, engine parts, tools, buckets, barrels, washing machines, random bits of rail and wood, cans, jugs, wires, cables... Well, you get the idea. There was a lot of equipment scattered around the mine site! Some of the old engines, tools, Union Carbide cans and other such rarities really belong in a museum, but it is pretty cool to be able to see them out in the field like this. I hardly feature it in the videos, but all around this mine were small prospect pits and places where the miners had obviously gone into various cliff faces for a few feet. So, I don’t know if they were picking out small pockets of material or if they were looking for something that wasn’t present other than where the main adits are. In the second video of the series, we explore the adit seen in the first video and in the final video, we explore an upper adit we discovered farther up the mountain at this abandoned mine. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L If you like these videos on exploring abandoned mines, please subscribe! https://goo.gl/yjPxH1 Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, guess what? We have fun doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a hundred years, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

So, you want to know how to find a specific abandoned mine or abandoned mines in general? We will dive into answering that question in this video by taking you along on our search for an abandoned mine that took us two years to locate! Along the way you’ll have the opportunity to observe the tools and techniques we use to find the historic mines that appear in our videos and you will, hopefully, be able to incorporate some of what we have learned over the years (and are now sharing with you) into your own search for mines and mine sites. I will cover how we find out about mines in the first place, the research that we do, the online resources we utilize, the technology we take out in the field with us and more. Whether you are a historian or a gold miner looking for promising sites to file claims on or a mine explorer interested in documenting our industrial heritage or are just curious what is around the area where you live, this video will, hopefully, have something useful for you. Some of you will obviously already know many, if not all, of these search techniques. However, this video is intended to have something for everyone – from the novice to the experienced mine hunter. Many people have no interest at all in finding lost mines, but enjoying seeing them and the efforts of others to find them, and so I have included the footage of the mine when we finally found it for that demographic as well. Fortunately, we don’t normally have to work this hard to find an abandoned mine, but if our search for this mine, although quite unpleasant and frustrating at times, was useful to someone else out there, then it was worth it. Happy hunting! From the old mill on it's unassuming surface to the fantastic double shaft there is plenty to be learned from this historic mine. The Snyder Mine traces its roots back to the 1860s, and is one of those rare sites where native gold and horn silver occur in the same ore body. This makes it a perfect opportunity for today's miner providing rich sustainable ore bodies. There is easy culverted access on the surface and newly installed gates at each adit entrance. With a notice of intent, the BLM is required to supply the owner with keys. There are thousands of feet of workings and beautiful timber-work inside making this an economic and historically appealing claim.

Corey and Jess stumbled upon this fantastic claim and instantly fell in love with it. A little hard work goes a long way, and come on, a true miner never shies away from hard work.
