Gold Butte National Monument is controversial for some locals

10:14
The newly-designated Gold Butte National Monument in Nevada contains fragile wildlife habitat, important sites for native tribes and thousands of ancient rock etchings. While local indigenous tribes, environmental advocacy groups and Democrats cheered former President Obama’s decision to bring the area under federal protection, some longtime residents vehemently opposed it. NewsHour Weekend’s Hari Sreenivasan reports.

Mining and Resistance in Dinétah

24:23
A special episode-length documentary filmed on location in Dinétah; the name of the land of the Navajo people, spanning parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah. 21 Billion tons of coal, the largest deposit in the US with an estimated value of 100 billion dollars, lay untouched in Dinétah until 1966. In that year, Peabody Coal Company leased the land in an agreement with a Hopi tribal council they helped form. In 1974, Congress passed the Navajo-Hopi Land Settlement Act, commonly known as “the relocation law." It divided about 2 million acres of land previously shared between Diné and Hopi tribes. Nearly overnight, the homes of tens of thousands of Diné and several hundred Hopi were now illegal. Since then, an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 Diné people have been forcibly relocated. Today, only a small group of mostly elder Diné continue to live here, and those that remain are being pressured to leave. More than 40% of homes here lack running water. Peabody Energy’s two mines here have extracted over 400 million tons of coal and depleted 70 percent of an ancient desert aquifer. Peabody’s Kayenta coal mine fuels the Navajo Generating Station, which is owned by the US Department of the Interior and provides water and electricity to Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. What is the cost, paid in the lives of the Navajo people, of the water and power delivered to these cities? On the anniversary of the founding of the United States, we visit with Diné (Navajo) youth and elders coming together to fight for the survival of their culture, fighting against displacement caused by US government policy, as well as exploitation caused by mining and other polluting industries.

Does solar offer hope for off-the-grid Navajo residents?

07:34
Bypassed in the ‘30s and '40s, one third of homes in Navajo Nation still have no access to grid electricity. Yet ironically, it's a huge electricity exporter, with one of the biggest coal-fired plants churning out power sold to millions. And now a plan to shut down the plant could sorely cost the reservation. Special correspondent Fred de Sam Lazaro reports that some are seeing a new opportunity. Trump Heading to Utah to Announce Monument Decision

00:32
Donald Trump will reportedly visit the state of Utah on Monday next week where he will announce his decision on whether or not to reduce the size of two national monuments where drilling and mining are currently banned. The president is expected shrink the Bears Ears National Monument, set aside by Barack Obama, and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, which was preserved by Bill Clinton. The decision will most likely then set off a long legal battle between the government with Native American tribes and environmental groups. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/iM-AnhKPB_4/trump-to-visit-utah-next-week-expected-to-announce-land-decision-idUSKBN1DS312 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Spending the Night at the Haunted, Abandoned Yellow Jacket Mine in Virginia City

18:05
Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #273 My friends and I rented an Air BnB in the historic, supposedly haunted mining town of Virginia City, in the mountains outside Reno...and the Air BnB turned out to be a remodeled old miner's cabin that was ALSO supposedly haunted! Turns out it was right next to an abandoned mine shaft where the worst mining disaster in Nevada history went down -- on April 7, 1869, a fire broke out at the 800 foot level in the mine, and at least 35 miners were killed. YIKES! Come with me as I explore the mine, the mill....and the Air BnB itself, to find out once and for all if it is haunted -- or just hype. Obama names Utah, Nevada monuments despite GOP opposition

05:15
President Barack Obama designated two national monuments Wednesday at sites in Utah and Nevada that have become key flashpoints over use of public land in the U.S. West, marking the administration's latest move to protect environmentally sensitive areas in its final days. The Bears Ears National Monument in Utah will cover 1.35 million acres in the Four Corners region, the White House said. In a victory for Native American tribes and conservationists, the designation protects land that is considered sacred and is home to an estimated 100,000 archaeological sites, including ancient cliff dwellings. It's a blow for state Republican leaders and many rural residents who say it will add another layer of unnecessary federal control and close the area to new energy development, a common refrain in the battle over use of the American West's vast open spaces. Utah's attorney general vowed to sue. In Nevada, a 300,000-acre Gold Butte National Monument outside Las Vegas would protect a scenic and ecologically fragile area near where rancher Cliven Bundy led an armed standoff with government agents in 2014. It includes rock art, artifacts, rare fossils and recently discovered dinosaur tracks. The White House and conservationists said both sites were at risk of looting and vandalism. "Today's actions will help protect this cultural legacy and will ensure that future generations are able to enjoy and appreciate these scenic and historic landscapes," Obama said in a statement. His administration has rushed to safeguard vulnerable areas ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. It has blocked new mining claims outside Yellowstone National Park and new oil drilling in the Arctic Ocean. Obama's creation and expansion of monuments covers more acreage than any other president. But Trump's upcoming presidency has tempered the excitement of tribal leaders and conservationists, with some worrying he could try to reverse or reduce some of Obama's expansive land protections. Utah's Republican senators vowed to work toward just that. "This arrogant act by a lame duck president will not stand," U.S. Sen. Mike Lee tweeted about Bears Ears, which is named for a set of rock formations. Sen. Orrin Hatch said Obama showed "an astonishing and egregious abuse of executive power" and that "far-left special interest groups matter more to him than the people who have lived on and cared for Utah's lands for generations." Christy Goldfuss, managing director of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, said the Antiquities Act that allows a president to create monuments does not give a president authority to undo a designation, a rule the courts have upheld. She acknowledged that Congress could take action, though. Opponents agreed the area is a natural treasure worth preserving but worried the designation would restrict oil and gas development as well as residents' ability to camp, bike, hike and gather wood. New mining or energy development will be banned, but existing operations won't be affected, federal officials said. Wood and plant gathering is still allowed as well as hunting, fishing and other recreation, they said. Members of Utah's all-GOP congressional delegation had backed a plan to protect about 1.4 million acres at Bears Ears, while opening up other areas of the state for development. The boundaries of the monument are roughly based on that plan — significantly smaller than what a coalition of tribes had sought. But Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye called it an exciting day for his tribe and people of all cultures. "We have always looked to Bears Ears as a place of refuge," Begaye said. "The rocks, the winds, the land — they are living, breathing things that deserve timely and lasting protection." The Navajo Nation is one of five tribes that will get an elected official on a first-of-its-kind tribal commission for the Bears Ears monument. It will provide federal land managers with expertise about the area, officials said. Tucked between existing national parks and the Navajo reservation, the monument features stunning vistas at every turn, with a mix of cliffs, plateaus, towering rock formations, rivers and canyons across wide expanses covered by sagebrush and juniper trees. At the Gold Butte site, Native American rock art and artifacts are scattered amid rugged mountains, sandstone formations and Joshua tree forests. Pioneers used the area for cattle ranching and mining, while campers and ATV riders enjoy it today. It's named for an early 1900s mining town. Retiring Democratic Sen. Harry Reid pushed for protection of the remote area northeast of Lake Mead, but GOP members of Nevada's congressional delegation have been vocal opponents. The "designation is a wonderful capstone to a career of fighting to protect Nevada's pristine landscapes," Reid said in a statement. if you like this video please leave a like and subscribe, CREATED BY RED FRAX NEWS COMMUNITY

National Monument Protection Weakening?

00:49
The Washington Post reported, the head of U.S. Department of the Interior called for changes to the management of 10 national monuments. The changes would lift restrictions on activities such as logging and mining and shrink the area covered of at least four of the sites. The recommendations come from U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. He's suggesting President Donald Trump reduce the boundaries of the monuments known as Utah’s Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante, Nevada’s Gold Butte and Oregon’s Cascade-Siskiyou. According to a copy of the memo that the Post obtained, Zinke also called for relaxing current restrictions within some of the monuments’ boundaries for activities such as grazing, logging, coal mining and commercial fishing. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/WQhFP_DRISg/u-s-interior-chief-urges-changes-to-national-monuments-report-idUSKCN1BT1E1 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Phone Booth in the MIDDLE of NOWHERE

03:58
Phone Booth in the MIDDLE of NOWHERE The Mojave phone booth was a public phone built in the middle of nowhere. This phone located in what is now the Mojave National Preserve in California, was built 8 miles or 13 km from the nearest paved road and 15 miles or 24 km from the nearest numbered highway. On top of that there are no buildings for quite some distance from this phone booth. This phone booth has a compelling history, originally built in 1948 to provide phone service to local volcanic cinder miners, this telephone was the result of a mandate the government of California put in place to serve residents in isolated parts of the state. While this phone benefited the few residents of the area as well it built because Cima Cinder Mine owner Emerson Ray put in the request to the state. From 1948 until the 1960s a hand-cranked magneto phone was used. This old style of phone was replaced with a rotary phone in the 60s then eventually a touch-tone phone in the 1970s. In 1997 this phone booth gained mass attention after a Los Angeles man found this phone booth on a map and visited the site. He wrote a letter about his trip to the phone booth to an underground magazine. A computer entrepreneur by the name of Godfrey Daniels, saw the letter and started the first of many websites dedicated to the Mojave phone booth. Fans started calling the phone and visiting the phone. People even camped out for days at the phone booth just to answer calls coming in. Several of these people kept the recordings and shared them online but overtime too many visitors brought a lot of garbage and graffiti. In 1999 John Glionna, a writer for the Los Angeles Times met with a man who claimed the Holy Spirit had instructed him to stay by the phone and answer it. This man spent 32 days beside the Mojave phone booth answering over 500 calls. One of these calls came from someone who identified himself as Sergeant Zeno from the Pentagon. The phone didn’t last much longer as in 1999 the Cima Cinder Mine was receiving a lot of pressure from local citizens, the National Parks Conservation Association and Mojave National Park. They joined together and threatened to sue Lorene Caffee, Emerson Ray’s daughter, who took over the mine after her father’s passing. The day before the lawsuit was filed, the superintendent of the Preserve visited Caffee which ended with Caffee submitting and ending the 45 year family mining operation. The next year on May 17, 2000, Pacific Bell removed the phone booth at the request of the National Park Service. The number was retired and a headstone like plaque was placed at the site. This colorful headstone didn’t last long as it was removed by the National Park Service. This story inspired the creation of Dead Line, an independent short film, Mojave Mirage, a documentary, and Mojave Phone Booth, a full length motion picture. The phone number of the phone booth, (714) 733-9969, changed twice to 619 then 760 due to area code changes. This number was eventually relinquished by AT&T to perrlessnetwork.com in March of 2013 as part of a pooling scheme. The final number (760) 733-9969 was acquired by Lucky225 in July of 2013 was now rings using VOIP. Callers can call in to enjoy a random conversation just like when the phone was active. Prospect, Nevada - Ghost Town

09:55
Prospect, Nevada was founded around 1885. It was a small (very small) town for people who worked in the nearby mining areas. There was only around 50 residents here. In 1893 a post office was opened. A small smelter was built a decade or so later. A smelter is a "factory" or place where they melt the ore down to separate the metal from it. There was housing built as well. When the mines closed down, so did the small town of Prospect. In 1918 the post office closed and shortly after the town was abandoned. After some research I went on my expedition to find this ghost town. I found two buildings that were in near complete ruins and some other small stone and brick formation on the mountain slope. I was in the middle of nowhere (like always) trying to find this place. Very remote and once again roads I should not have been traveling with a car and no supplies for survival if I happened to break down. I had no idea that the paved route I was taking to get there in central Nevada was going to turn into about 30 miles of gravel road. The only way I could find out what way to go was looking at satellite view on Google to determine the approximate location. The good news is I found the area that Prospect, Nevada was at. The bad news is I only found 2 buildings in ruins. The other bad news is that there was a lot more there but I never saw it. I drove right beside where it was at and just over a little hill... there it was! I found this out the next day after leaving the area when I studied satellite view on Google more. After zooming in to the max view on Google maps I was able to see a faint area where it looks like there are more buildings. The building that I found was not the smelter that supposedly still exists there. Turns out I overlooked the best part! You know what this means, RIGHT? I have to go back and finish the expedition soon! None the less there were amazing views out here and I was driving up mountain slopes on dirt paths that my car hardly fit on. One wrong move, one sneeze, I would be over the edge. I get scared when I go on these adventures, I fear getting stuck, stranded, or even fear that I will die. It is all very possible and the chances are very high... Where would my sense of adventure be though, if I didn't make every attempt to finish what I started? To see the places and things that few humans will ever see? During this journey I drove by the small community of Duckwater, Nevada which is an Indian reservation. This is the photo with the housing in the distance. This album contains photos of the 30+ miles of gravel road I ended up on. I forgot to take photos of the mountain canyon roads I was taking to get there but from the views up high you can see the rocky dirt road on which I was traveling. Lucky to make it in, even luckier to make it out!

Obama Trying To Protect Public Lands From Trump

05:00
President Obama is working quietly behind the scenes to protect some public lands from drilling and mining. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. http://tytnetwork.com/join "With less than two months before he has to vacate the White House, handing over the keys to a successor who has vowed to open more federal lands and waters to drilling and mining, President Barack Obama is making a last-ditch effort to save swathes of public land. This week, the Department of the Interior banned gold mining on 30,000 acres of land near the northern entrance of Yellowstone National Park. “There are good places to mine for gold, but the doorstep of [Yellowstone] is not one of them,” said DOI Secretary Sally Jewell on Monday. Obama’s administration also cancelled more than two dozen oil and gas leases in Western Colorado earlier this month, introduced a ban on offshore oil drilling in the Arctic for at least five years and helped negotiate a settlement that canceled 32,000 acres of mining leases on Montana land considered sacred by the Blackfeet tribe. In the coming weeks, the president could push through several eleventh-hour preservation projects, reported The Guardian, including naming new national monuments in the Bears Ears landscape in Utah, Nevada’s Gold Butte and the greater Grand Canyon area.”* Read more here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/barack-obama-public-lands-trump_us_5837f4ece4b09b6056006007 Hosts: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian Cast: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. Obama Preserves Mammoth Bones and Rock Carvings With New Monuments

00:42
Mammoth bones, prehistoric rock carvings and more than a million acres of wilderness will be protected as part of three new national monuments that President Barack Obama is creating in California, Nevada and Texas. The presidential move, announced by the White House on Friday, brings to 19 the number of monuments that Obama has created or expanded since taking office. Environmental advocates hailed the new monuments as bringing sorely needed protection to natural American treasures, even as Republicans in Congress were pursuing legislation to stop the president. http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jul/10/obama-mammoths-national-monuments-california-texas-nevada http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Cliff Gardner The history behind Bundy Ranch and Golden Butte National Monument designation exmedia

35:27
FIRST AID KIT ESSENTIAL ionic silver spray. http://ionsilver.us Working on a series of interviews looking into the background to the events and concerns of the Golden Butte National Park designation that was passed by the Obama Administration via Executive order over the New Year weekend. In this interview I speak with Nevada rancher and western land use researcher Cliff Gardner whom has one the largest repositories on land use and the impacts thereof as it relates to public use of lands that I have ever com across. Cliff breaks down the issue of the desert tortoise and how its designation as an endangered species in Nevada in 1989 affected the 56 families that were at the time reaching cattle in Clark County. By 2014 the Bundy family was literally the last family still ranching and that was only possible because they had in their words "fired' the BLM from management of the public lands that their family had used and improved for over a hundred years. This is one of several interviews that will be included in the final long format article that will be published at Ex Media. If you would like to understand why the Bundy family and their community took a stand against the BLM in 2014 this a good introduction to the events leading unto the infamous standoff. 1950s UTAH & SALT LAKE CITY TRAVELOGUE & EDUCATIONAL FILM 60604

08:56
One of the "This Land of Ours" films made by prolific producer Carl Dudley, this 1950s educational film looks at the state of Utah in the American west. Utah means “top of the mountain” and is bordered by five states: Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, and Colorado (:34). This state was originally under water, as evidenced by the wave-cut terraces (:45). The largest of what remains is The Great Salt Lake (1:02), so salty a person can float in it. Utah’s Mormon roots date to July of 1847 when Brigham Young declared “This is the Place” for his pioneers to settle, memorialized in a statue (1:16). The capital is Salt Lake City (1:28), which has multiple statues as reminders of its Mormon background, including a large one of Brigham Young, head of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1:42). The capital building at State Street (1:50) has a dome of Utah copper and walls of Utah granite and marble. The first Mormon Temple (2:05) has many interesting architectural elements, including a golden figure of Moroni, the angel from the Book of Mormon, who sits atop the East Tower (2:19). The Mormon Tabernacle (2:27), finished in 1867, has amazing acoustics. Also on Temple Square is a monument to seagulls, who appeared and devoured crickets in the first year of farming in 1848 (2:48). Another large city is Ogden, named after Canadian explorer Peter Skene Ogden (3:05) and serves as a shipping center for cattle (3:14). Utah also has agriculture, which relies on irrigation systems (3:31-3:42). People hand-pick peaches and vegetables (3:44-4:00). Tractors harvest fields of wheat (4:00) as cattle graze on alfalfa (4:11). Dairy is a prominent industry (4:12-4:39), as are sheep (4:39-4:53). Utah also cans its produce (4:55). Salt is gathered by harvesters at the shore of the Great Salt Lake and sent for processing, such as at the Royal Crystal Salt Company (5:07-5:27). Steel is also a manufactured here, with the largest plant in Geneva, where pig iron, steel plates, and structural steel are produced (5:38-5:55). Utah also mines non-ferrous metal due to an abundance of different minerals (6:01), with the largest surface copper mine in North America at Bingham (6:13-6:34). Visually, Utah is scenic, including the Dixie National Forest (6:41) and bird sanctuaries such as at Bear River (6:47). At Cedar Breaks National Monument Park, pink limestone cliff formations in 47 different shades of color are breathtaking (6:59). Zion National Park features Zion Canyon, a spectacular gorge (7:11-7:32). Bryce Canyon National Park also features pink formations (7:41-7:56). Winter sports include skiing in the Wasatch Mountains (8:07-8:23), as is fly fishing (8:40) in the warmer months. US Parks May Lose Federal Protection | USA Breaking News

02:13
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order requiring a review of environmental protections given to lands owned by the federal government. The order aims to shrink the borders of national monuments created by previous presidents, which Mr Trump called an "egregious abuse of federal power". Unlike national parks, which require an act of Congress, national monuments can be created by a presidential directive. However, a president does not currently have the right to abolish a monument. The White House intends to shrink the borders of existing national monuments that have drawn controversy from Republican lawmakers and the mining industry. Environmentalists fear this order will unleash a wave of new oil and gas extraction, which was a Trump campaign promise. It directs the Department of Interior to examine all lands designated as national monuments since 1996, and threatens the 1.35 million acre Bears Ears National Monument in Utah, which was created by Barack Obama during the final days of his administration. Utah lawmakers oppose the Obama action and have lobbied Mr Trump since his November election to overturn it. Mr Obama placed 553 million acres under national monument protection during his presidency - more than any other US president. This, his successor said, was an abuse of power. "The previous administration used a 10-year old law known as the Antiquities Act to unilaterally put millions of acres of land and water under strict federal control… eliminating the ability of the people who actually live in those states to decide how best to use that land," Mr Trump said during a signing ceremony on Wednesday. "Today we are putting the states back in charge - big thing."

Obama designates two national monuments, outrages Republicans

Obama designates two national monuments, outrages Republicans President Obama designated land in Utah and Nevada as national monuments to help protect environmentally sensitive areas in his final days in office. Some state Republican leaders say it will add another layer of unnecessary federal control. Obama designates two national monuments, outrages Republicans President Obama designated two national monuments in Utah and Nevada Wednesday as part of the outgoing president’s efforts to secure and expand his environmental legacy, and to possibly bind the hands of President-elect Donald Trump. The White House announced that The Bears Ears National Monument in Utah will cover 1.35 million acres in the Four Corners region. The move is a victory for Native American tribes and conservationists for whom the land is considered sacred, but sparked intense opposition from Republicans. "This arrogant act by a lame duck president will not stand," Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah., tweeted. The president also announced a 300,000-acre Gold Butte National Monument outside Las Vegas that will protect an ecologically fragile area that includes rock art, artifacts and fossils. “Today’s actions will help protect this cultural legacy and will ensure that future generations are able to enjoy and appreciate these scenic and historic landscapes,” Obama said in a statement. The Gold Butte designation was applauded by Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., who said he was “overjoyed” at the news. “President Obama is a courageous man. I could not be more grateful to him and his team for working with me to make this happen, and for everything he has done to protect public lands in Nevada. By designating Gold Butte a national monument, President Obama has shown once again why he is one of greatest environmental presidents in American history,” Reid said in a statement. In Utah, state Republican leaders claimed the designation there would add another layer of federal control, and close the area to new energy development. While Republicans agreed the area is worth preserving, they expressed concern that it would restrict energy development, as well as the ability of residents to camp, hike and gather wood in the area. Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz said Obama had ruined a bipartisan compromise in the works. "After years of painstaking negotiations with a diverse coalition, Utah had a comprehensive bipartisan solution on the table that would have protected the Bears Ears and provided a balanced solution. Instead, the president's midnight proclamation cherry picked provisions of the Public Lands Initiative and disregarded the economic development and multi-use provisions necessary for a balanced compromise,” he said. Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes said his office is planning a lawsuit over the issue. “It is extremely disappointing that President Obama has declared another national monument here in Utah, ignoring the voices of so many in our state, particularly those closest to the designated space,” Reyes said. “By significantly restricting access to a large portion of public lands in Utah, the President weakens land management capabilities and fails to protect those the Antiquities Act intended to benefit.” However, Native American groups were delighted, with Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye calling it an exciting day. "We have always looked to Bears Ears as a place of refuge," Begaye said. "The rocks, the winds, the land — they are living, breathing things that deserve timely and lasting protection." Obama’s latest environmental move is the latest in a series of actions to nail down his legacy before Trump is inaugurated. Trump has pledged to remove many environmental regulations to drilling and other energy mining, and has promised to undo much of Obama’s environmental agenda. Last week, the president ordered U.S.-owned waters in the Arctic Ocean and certain areas in the Atlantic Ocean placed "indefinitely" off-limits for future oil and gas leases. He has also blocked new mining claims outside Yellowstone National Park. While the monuments were designated by executive action, it may require action by Congress to remove. Christy Goldfuss, managing director of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, told The Associated Press that the Antiquities Act allows presidents to create monuments, but does not give them authority to undo one. However, that did not stop congressional Republicans from saying they intended to overturn Obama’s latest move. Rep. Chaffetz said he looked forward to helping President-elect Trump overturn the Utah designation. "We look forward to working with President-elect Trump to follow through on his commitment to repeal midnight regulations. We will work to repeal this top-down decision and replace it with one that garners local support and creates a balanced, win-win solution,” he said in a statement.
