Excavator Dredge, Offshore Nome Alaska

02:25
A 2011 video my wife made showing an excavator gold dredge called the Christine Rose mining for gold offshore Nome. A couple smaller 6" dredges are mining on the same lease about a mile away. In 2014, the Christine Rose was the 6th largest offshore gold dredge in Nome. A camera crew can be seen filming aboard this vessel, which was later featured on the TV show Bering Sea Gold. Nome Offshore Dredge: Big Red, Back Story

39:33
Do you want to build a dredge and mine for gold offshore Nome? Are you curious about what design features are important for a Bering Sea gold dredge? How would you build an ocean gold dredge? What features would you add to make a dredge perform better. Well, I have mined for gold off the bottom of the Bering Sea since 2006. This is the story of my second dredge, called Big Red, a 22-foot by 10-foot diver-operated suction dredge that I designed and built in 2008 to mine in the shallow near shore waters of Norton Sound, near Nome, Alaska. This video is a narrated slide show (since I didn't have a video camera in 2008) where I discuss my dredge design and features, as well as some insights that TV shows don't cover. The "BIMA" - Nome Alaska Biggest Dredge Ever

01:04
Bucket-Ladder dredges are very complex systems which require a large, highly skilled crew to operate. They tend to be custom built for specific conditions. An initial cost will range from several million to 10s of millions depending on the production and depth of operation. Accuracy is a function of vessel management usually achieved with spuds or anchors which is an art in its self. Their ability to reach near shore shallow areas is limited by their draft and the sea state. Bucket ladders can easily achieve 10km3/day and operate to depths in excess of 50m. Bottom coverage is nearly 100%, but the depth of cut is influenced by surface conditions, especially in rough seas. Under excavation will result in lost gold and a higher spillage rate. Historical BIMA Benchmark The BIMA, a 565 foot long bucket-ladder dredge operated by West Gold from 1987 to 1990 is the largest dredge to ever be mobilized in Nome. The initial purchase price was about $4,000,000 while an additional $15,000,000 was invested in the retrofit for Nome mobilization. During the trials and 4 years of operation, the BIMA experienced hull damage from ice, was hindered by rough seas and was shut down due to a broken drive shaft[III]. The BIMA did not proved to be economically viable, but it did set the high bar for material removal and gold recovery. These numbers will be used to establish a baseline for competing technologies to reference. The market price for gold at the time was around $400/oz., the current $1,300/oz. price makes a comparable operation much more profitable. Historic figures show that over its four-year period, the BIMA averaged 1,114,400m3/year of excavated material. For an average of 100 operational days per year, this equates to 11,114m3/day or 464m3/hr. This data is quantified in Table 1 below. Table 1: BIMA Data BIMA Benchmark – Historic 4-Year Period Total Dredged Volume 4,457,602 m3 Duration 4 years Average Season 100 days Daily Average 11,144 m3/day Hour Average 464 m3/hr. By processing this material, they were able to average 295 oz. per day. Here, we assume this ‘free gold’ had a fineness of .89 fine. In today’s market, this production would average over $340,000 per day in gross revenue before operating expenses and taxes. [i] Vlasblom W.J. (2004, Feb). Alaska Gold: Crevicing, Panning and High Banking By The River

27:41
Join me for another night of crevicing for gold by the Casadepaga river near Nome Alaska. I demonstrate several important and rewarding gold prospecting techniques including crevicing, high banking and panning out one small bucket of gold containing clay that was stuck to the clay on rocks that I excavated. I also work about five buckets of raw material collected by crevicing through a riverside high banker and then pan it down as well. Both methods were very productive. The mosquitoes were horrendous.

Nome, Alaska – Where Gold Seekers Go Today

03:19
About 100 years ago, the town of Nome, Alaska, was a busy place with a population of more than 20,000, most of them gold seekers. Today, fewer than 4,000 people live here and prospecting for gold is no longer the main occupation. Still many come to this town with a golden past hoping to find a share of the precious metal. Natasha Mozgovaya visited Nome. Originally published at - https://www.voanews.com/a/nome-alaska-where-gold-seekers-go-today/4702299.html

Laurel Bill on Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil, Going for gold in Nome

03:20
Known as the “poor man’s gold rush,” the discovery of gold on the beaches of Nome meant anyone could work the public property without staking or recording claims. The town's population swelled from 3,000 to 20,000 by 1900. Author/historian Laurel Downing Bill says that with more than 60 saloons, dozens of criminals, a few hundred prostitutes and dishonest officials, including an embezzling postmaster, a tax assessor who went to prison for illicit financial dealings and a federal judge who made crooked rulings, it’s not surprising that robberies, murder and mayhem flourished. America’s last big placer gold rush came in 1898 after three greenhorn Scandinavians discovered gold at Anvil Creek on Sept. 22. Swedish tailor Eric Lindblom, Norwegian Jafet Lindberg and Swedish coal miner John Brynteson ended up on the Seward Peninsula because the promising land in the Klondike already had been claimed. Their Anvil discovery yielded $3.5 million in gold by 1900, and during the next two decades, brought in another $80 million. When word spread about their rich find, thousands of people left Dawson and flooded into Nome. The new town filled with shady characters and hardened criminals who didn’t pay much attention to mining laws. By July 1899, almost every potentially valuable claim had been jumped at least twice and many had multiple claimants. Then a soldier, assigned to a small detachment sent up from St. Michael to guard the settlement, and an old prospector from Idaho found gold in the sands of Nome’s beaches. That changed everything. Known as the “poor man’s gold rush,” that discovery of gold meant anyone could work the public property without staking or recording claims. The population of Nome swelled from 3,000 to 20,000 by 1900. With more than 60 saloons, dozens of criminals, a few hundred prostitutes and dishonest officials, including an embezzling postmaster, a tax assessor who went to prison for illicit financial dealings and a federal judge who made crooked rulings, it’s not surprising that robberies, murder and mayhem flourished in Nome. Many others headed to Nome intent on making their fortunes off those gold-crazed miners. Even famous lawman Wyatt Earp ended up there 1899-1901. He built a bar, called the Dexter Saloon (he billed it as the only second class saloon in Alaska) and was very good at mining the miners with alcohol and gambling. Famous novelist Rex Beach made a tidy sum with his book “The Spoilers,” that told the tale of all the corruption in the northern town. By 1910, the poor man’s gold rush had played out. Nome’s population dropped back to around 2,000 – most of those who remained continued with placer mining.
