Minister dashes families' hopes of Pike mine re-entry

01:57
Environment Minister Dr Nick Smith has dashed hopes that the Pike River Mine will be re-entered to recover the bodies of the 29 men who died underground, after he met victim's families in Greymouth tonight. Family members of those killed in explosions six years ago this weekend had been blocking the mine access road to protest against the entrance being sealed off. The victims' families and Dr Smith met tonight to discuss work on decommissioning the mine and progressing the memorial track through Paparoa National Park. "I have confirmed to the families that Solid Energy has completed the first phase of work for the permanent seal 30m into the drift," Dr Smith said in a statement. He said Solid Energy has a legal obligation to comply with an improvement notice issued by the High Hazards Unit of WorkSafe New Zealand to complete a seal by the end of November, and about a week of work is required to meet this legal requirement. The site needs to be made safe so it can be returned to the Department of Conservation for inclusion in the Paparoa National Park, the Minister said. "This is an emotional time for families, given Saturday's sixth anniversary of the tragedy which claimed the lives of 29 men. That's why Solid Energy agreed to defer work on decommissioning the mine this week," Dr Smith said. He said there's no new information which changes Solid Energy's view that safe re-entry of the mine is not possible. "I remain doubtful of claims that the mine can be safely re-entered. The mine is full of methane and is likely to have residual heat sources capable of triggering an explosion if there was a source of oxygen. There is the added risk of rock falls," Dr Smith said. "Pike River Mine has only one exit route and that remains a fundamental flaw for the safety of any re-entry. The Government has spent more than $5 million trying to find a safe way of re-entering the mine and we support the conclusion that it is not practically possible." Dr Smith said: "I do appreciate the huge loss families have faced with the loss of loved ones at Pike, and the added pain of not being able to recover their men. However, you cannot justify putting further lives at risk. We must also ensure mining companies like Solid Energy comply with safety requirements from WorkSafe New Zealand under the new Health and Safety at Work Act." Tongariro National Park (Mordor)- New Zealand Vlog

04:24
Alex and I hike/tramp around New Zealand's Tongariro National Park's Northern Circuit, described as one of their 'Great Walks'. It took us 3 days and day two was shared with walkers of the 'Alpine Crossing', a shorter but still pretty epic day hike through the park, and one which takes yo through the most beautiful scenery. P.S. sorry for this taking so long to upload. NZ's South Island has barely got internet coverage. Great if you want a total escape, not so great if you want to upload or download anything with a file size greater than 100mbs. NZ's Department of Conservation website is pretty useful for hut and campsite bookings (essential during great walk season) and general information. http://www.doc.govt.nz/tongarironortherncircuit I'll make a useful 'Hiking NZ' video soon, I promise. emextravel.tumblr.com https://www.instagram.com/emextravel/

The "Zip" Rubber Powered Model Aeroplane

04:56
Inspired by "Mousesquadron" who built one using foam, mine will be built from whatever materials I have available. The foam I have is 3mm laminate floor boards underlay which is, unlike Depron, very soft and flexible. So I still have to use some balsa for the main frame to take up the strain of the rubber motor. I downloaded the plan from the internet and enlarged it 135% to have a wingspan of approx 13 inches. Mousesquadron found the plans on https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?832742-Looking-for-an-Easy-to-Build-Rubber-FF/page2#post9370768This

WOODLANA STATION CYGNET PARKS KANGAROO ISLAND

03:56
September 19 2017 Media mogul Kerry Stokes and veteran cattleman Peter Murray are selling the largest farming portfolio on South Australia's Kangaroo Island with industry sources putting the value of their 7821-hectare Cygnet Park Farms and livestock as high as $50 million. Mr Stokes is one of a host of billionaires who have invested heavily in large scale farming assets, especially those tied to beef cattle production, with mining magnate Gina Rinehart and retailers Brett Blundy and Gerry Harvey having all snapped up major agricultural assets in recent years. Cygnet Park Farms comprises 7800 hectares of prime mixed-use farming aggregated over a decade. Cygnet Park Farms comprises 7800 hectares of prime mixed-use farming aggregated over a decade. Photo: Sean McGowan The cattle, sheep and cropping aggregation, which the Seven Group executive chairman has compiled with his long-time business partner over the past decade, comes to market at a time of rising prime farmland values, especially properties tied to protein-rich food production like beef and lamb and to wool production. The offering of Cygnet Park Farms, through Elders Real Estate, includes a herd of about 3300 cattle and 15,700 sheep and is expected to attract interest from international corporate investors and local farming groups. The island is renowned for its local produce, which is marketed under the "Kangaroo Island" brand and is especially sought-after in Asia. Kerry Stokes has been a long-time investor in South Australian farmland. Kerry Stokes has been a long-time investor in South Australian farmland. Photo: Philip Gostelow First established in 2007 under the stewardship of Mr Murray, the aggregation has been steadily expanded over the years, most recently in June 2015 when Woodlana Station, a 2823-hectare landholding at Cassini on the island's central north coast was acquired for $4.7 million. In 2010, the pair acquired Clifton Downs, a 550-hectare grazing property on Kangaroo Island. Other properties in the portfolio include Long Hill Station. Mr Murray, one of Australia's most experienced cattlemen, said he had decided to bring the portfolio to market in order to focus on other business interests as he transitions into retirement. He turns 81 next month. "I am very proud of the quality portfolio of both real estate and livestock assets that we have built in one of the world's most pristine agricultural environments. I will retain a smaller portfolio of properties on the Island moving forward as I remain convinced it is one of the best livestock production regions in Australia and has enormous opportunities to deliver high margin, quality produce to the world."

Devil's Ice Box - An Abandoned Mine | Jason Asselin

After a long walk through the woods, we found "Devil's Ice Box" in Michigan. See part 2 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhekcKgNerA We parked near US2 and hiked into the woods, we sort of knew where it might be but really wasn't too sure. The fence surrounding it gave it away. We didn't have to climb over it though, it has fallen down through out the years I guess. This was shot in August, not much of a chance to find ice this time. Come Explore it with us.. This video was originally filmed in 2010.

big river West Coasts new Zealand

04:57
25 km south of Reefton at an altitude of 670 m, Big River is testimony to mans' relentless search for gold. It is reached either via walking or mountain biking along an old pack track from Waiuta, or by 4WD from Reefton along an old dray road that was pushed through steep country in the 1880s. Today you can easily spend a full day exploring remnants of the old township, wandering along water races, making the trip up to the Big River dam site and inspecting the large double acting Robey steam-winding engine in the reconstructed (2000) engine shed. The engine once lifted mine tubs containing gold-rich quartz up the 602 m mineshaft to the surface for processing. Behind the engine house, wind your way up the track to the restored poppet head standing above the mineshaft. From this vantage point you are rewarded with spectacular views out to the Grey River and the Paparoa Range. A further 30 minutes walk from the poppet head along the track that leads to the Inangahua River is the Big River sawmill. Here you can see the sawmill remains and the Robey boiler under slung steam engine that was abandoned when it closed back in the 1920s. Access to Big River from Reefton is via a challenging 4WD road or as a two day tramp along the Big River track which links Waiuta through Big River to the Inangahua River on SH7. You can overnight in the 30 bunk Department of Conservation hut at Big River. Mountain biking is also a popular choice for getting into Big River, either along the 4WD road from Reefton or along the Big River tramping track from Waiuta. A mountain biking loop from Reefton - Big River - Waiuta - Reefton is achievable as a two-day trip.

Tyre - North Star - Santiago, Pennsylvania - Montour Railroad

Brief history of a tiny but large producing coal mining town on the Montour Railroad outside of Pittsburgh, Pa. February 10th 1929 - John Barcoski, polish miner from tyre, Pa, was beaten to death by the Coal and Iron Police on his way to work. This case, along with countless other grievances, results in the Coal and Iron Police force being abolished in 1935. Here's the actual 1929 reports from the Coroner. library.pitt.edu/labor_legacy/Bereski.htm A 1935 film called "Black Fury" was based on this incident. Black Fury is an historical novel by the American writer and judge Michael Musmanno developed from his script of the same name: Black Fury (1935 film). The concept for Black Fury was adapted from the short story "Jan Volkanik" by Musmanno and the play Bohunk by Harry R. Irving, based on an actual 1929 incident in which John Barkoski, a striking coal miner, was beaten to death by company detectives. Set in the Western Pennsylvania coal fields outside of Pittsburgh, the novel is the story of Jan Volkanik, a miner who agitates for recognition of the United Mine Workers of America. The town of (Santiago - Tyre - North Star) Pennsylvania is located just outside of Imperial, Pa near Old Steubenville Pike This town had its own spur on the Montour Railroad. The area's frequent downpours only enhance this South Island beauty, sending numerous waterfalls cascading down the cliffs. Bay of Islands ========== The Bay of Islands is one of the most popular holiday destinations in New Zealand. The picturesque area contains 144 islands, many secluded bays and some great sandy beaches. This beautiful bay has an abundance of marine life including whales, penguins, dolphins and the big marlin. Not surprisingly, it is a popular tourist spot for sailing yachts on world cruises and international sport fishermen. Tongariro National Park =================== The first national park of New Zealand, Tongariro is known for its surprises and extremes. The park's diverse range of ecosystems includes tranquil lakes, active volcanoes, herb fields, untamed forests and desert-like plateaus. The short hike will take you through scrubland and forest and across the lava line of volcanic eruptions from hundreds of years ago. Rotorua ======== Rotorua is known as the thermal wonderland of New Zealand. There are numerous geysers and hot springs in and around the city. Many of these are in parks and reserves. Natural eruptions of steam, hot water and mud occasionally occur in new locations. Nearby Wai-O-Tapu is also a popular tourist attraction with many hot springs noted for their colorful appearance, in addition to the Lady Knox Geyser. Franz Josef Glacier ============= This glacier, located within Westland National Park in the southwest, is one of the world's most accessible. Napier Art Deco ======== Napier, a small city in Hawke's Bay on the North Island's east coast, is famous for its eye-catching art deco architecture. Most of Napier was leveled by an earthquake in 1931. The rebuilding period coincided with the short-lived Art Deco era and as a result Napier's architecture is strikingly different from any other city in the world. Thousands of tourist visit Napier every February for the Art Deco Weekend, an event dedicated to the style, vintage cars, picnics and the soapbox derby. Sky Tower =============== The Sky Tower is an observation and telecommunications tower located in New Zealand's largest city. At a height of 328 meters (1,076 ft) it is the tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere and the Sky Tower has become an iconic structure in Auckland's skyline. The tower offers views of up to 80 km away and fine dining in the Orbit revolving restaurant. Abel Tasman National Park =============== Located on the northern tip of the country's South Island, this vast national park is a hiker's dream. Closed to vehicles, one must enter by boat, foot or small plane, but the trip is well worth it. While traversing the mountainous terrain, blue penguins, wekas, oyster catchers, wood pigeons and other rare birds can all be seen. Coromandel Peninsula ============== This north-eastern peninsula is famous for its white and golden sand beaches that frame magnificent coastal scenery, forests perfect for days of exploration and other natural wonders. Nickel Plate Mine Discharge McDonald, Pa

01:34
On January 25, 2005, DEP and federal Office of Surface Mining officials responded to a breakout of mine water from the former Pittsburgh Coal Company's Nickel Plate Company mine in McDonald, Washington County. More than 10,000 gallons per minute (GPM) of mine drainage was flowing from a point along Liberty Avenue. Borough contractors, searching for a water leak, uncovered the breakout site about 1:30 pm. DEP staff met with McDonald Borough, Washington County Emergency Management, and federal Office of Surface Mining officials to develop an emergency action plan to handle the rapid flow of water and its potential threat to homes and businesses near the breakout site. At the time of the breakout, a business and a church were taking on water, and one house had been evacuated. DEP Emergency Response, along with members of the McDonald Borough Fire Department and the Washington County Hazardous Materials Team, constructed sand banks along Liberty and North McDonald Streets to channel the mine drainage into a catch basin, which then drained into Robinson Run, a tributary to Chartiers Creek. Two days later, the federal Office of Surface Mining replaced the banks with two diesel pumps and piping to remove the mine water flow from the streets. news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2519&dat=20050205&id=ek9aAAAAIBAJ&sjid=-CgMAAAAIBAJ&pg=2435,13388983 dep.state.pa.us/dep/deputate/minres/districts/homepage/california/McDonald/McDonald.htm

Cave Creek 20th Anniversary

00:38
Today marks the twentieth anniversary of the Cave Creek tragedy which saw the deaths of fourteen people on the West Coast. Thirteen students and a DOC officer died when a viewing platform fell thirty metres into a gully at Paparoa National Park. Four others survived the fall. A commission of inquiry into the incident found the platform was poorly built by unqualified staff, leading to stricter safety measures at DOC sites.

TWENTIETH CENTURY KALGOORLIE W AUSTRALIA HISTORY GOLD MINING TRANSPORT BUILDINGS

23:12
ONE OF A SERIES ON KALGOORLIE SEE http://video.google.com.au/videosearch?q=DON+PUGH+KALGOORLIE History KAL WESTERN AUSTRALIA In June 1893, prospectors Patrick (Paddy) Hannan, Tom Flanagan, and Dan O'Shea were travelling to Mt Youle when one of their horses cast a shoe. During the resultant halt in their journey, the men noticed signs of gold in the area, and decided to stay put. On June 17, 1893, Hannan filed a Reward Claim, leading to hundreds of men swarming to the area in search of gold and Kalgoorlie was born. The mining of gold, along with other metals such as nickel, has been a major industry in Kalgoorlie ever since. The concentrated area of large gold mines surrounding the original Hannan find is often referred to as the Golden Mile, and is considered by some to be the richest square mile of earth on the planet. The town's population was about 30,000 people in 1903. The narrow gauge Government railway line reached Kalgoorlie in the 1896, and the main named railway service from Perth was the overnight sleeper train The Westland which ran until the 1970s. In 1917, a standard gauge railway line was completed, connecting Kalgoorlie to the city of Port Augusta, South Australia, across 2000 km of desert, and consequently the rest of the eastern states. The standardisation of the railway connecting Perth (which changed route from the narrow gauge route) in 1968 made it possible for rail travel from Perth to Sydney - and the Indian Pacific rail service commenced soon after. Places, famous or infamous, that Kalgoorlie is noted for include its water pipeline, designed by C. Y. O'Connor, which brings in fresh water from Mundaring Weir near Perth; its Hay Street brothels (the street itself was apparently named after Hay Street, Perth); its two-up school; the goldfields railway loopline; the Kalgoorlie Town Hall; the Paddy Hannan statue/drinking fountain; the Super Pit; and Mt Charlotte lookout. Its main street is Hannan Street, named after the town's founder. The town of Kalgoorlie and the shire of Boulder amalgamated on February 1, 1989 to become the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalgoorlie DON PUGH producer: Don Pugh

Nathan's Western Park Part 2

09:10
This is the second part of my western park video series. This part shows off the last two roller coasters in the park as well as a final firework display. First of all, "El Toro", a wooden coaster makes it's appearance. Inspired by the real life coaster of the same name, this woody plunges riders down and over huge crests and even features a unique "top hat" element, never previously seen on a wooden coaster. Another unique feature on this coaster is the fact that the second drop is infact bigger than the first, surprising riders. I really wanted to make at least one great wooden coaster before leaving RCT3 so I hope this lives up to expectations! Finally, a "Big Thinder Mountain" inspired mine train coaster ends my RCT3 coaster list. This is hands down, without a doubt, the most challenging roller coaster I've ever attempted. Right from the start I always wanted to make a mine train like Disney's "Big Thunder Mountain". Of course, this was extremely hard due to the game's restrictions, meaning I could never make the surrounding environment look as impresive without use of custom scenery. But I resisted temptation! I think the result, despite a life time of block by block terra-forming, turned out to be quite acceptable all things considered but I'lll leave that up to you guys to decide! Out the station, you descend into a tunnel which passes under the river which surrounds the rest of the ride, which is planted on an island. You then ascend into a western village before dropping through cattle fields and most importantly, through many passages and tunnels before hitting a final heliw over the water before entering one last long tunnel that slices through the mountain, exiting near a waterfall which welcomes you back to dry land.. Other features shown include the train leading to the "Western Village", an agglomeration of buildings home to various rides. A final touch is included in the credits. I use the time to show off some of my previously unseen projects that never made it to youtube (A launched coaster named "Furious Paco" inspired by Portv Aventura's "Furius Baco" as well as my "Triassic Park") as well as some of the mine trains construction stages. Enjoy and thankyou for viewing my videos! Basilthecornsnake I do not own any of the music used in this video.

Lying at the most northern and accessible end of Fiordland National Park, Milford sound offers some of the world's most staggering coastal scenery with its dramatic peaks and dark blue waters. Start your trek at the Whakapapa Visitor Center, just a three hour hike from the stunning Taranaki Falls. Visitors can walk right up to the foot of the massive glacier or take a helicopter ride over the dazzling Ice Age remnant. Together with Fox Glacier it is one of South Westland's major drawcards for tourists. Kaikoura ======== This small coastal town on the South Island is a haven for seafood lovers. You can spot fur seals, dolphins, sperm whales and albatrosses off the shore, then indulge in a feast of fresh crayfish, mussels, blue cod and more. Land lovers can take a wilderness walk through the untamed and dramatic Kaikoura forest. Start your visit in Thames, a small but picturesque city with a rich history of gold mining. Don't miss a stop at Hot Water Beach, where visitors can dig their own hot pool from the springs under the sands. ====================== New Zealand tourist attractions, New Zealand Tourism, New Zealand Nature, NZ cities, NZ full video HD, New Zealand HD, New Zealand Travel, New Zealand Travel Guide, New Zealand Vacations, New Zealand Landscape, New Zealand Tours, Top Tourist Attractions in New Zealand, Milford Sound, Bay of Islands Tongariro, National Park, Rotorua, Franz Josef Glacier, Kaikoura, Napier Art Deco, Sky Tower Abel Tasman National Park, Coromandel Peninsula

Ours Not Mine: Kevin Hague visits the Denniston Plateau

01:07
Forest & Bird Chief Executive Kevin Hague visited the Denniston Plateau to see some of the places that the Government is intending to destroy with open cast coal mining. The natural values of the places that would be impacted are extremely high. It's habitat to great spotted kiwi, fernbird, unique cave weta, and powelliphanta the carnivorous land snail. Open cast coal mining would destroy this unique habitat, forever. To make a donation to Forest & Bird's Ours Not Mine appeal: http://bit.ly/2eGOibA

The Old Ghost Road Mountain Biking New Zealand

13:01
Mountain biking The Old Ghost Road, the South Island, New Zealand. PLANNING & PREPARATION https://tinyurl.com/y9m3nkmw ROUTE DESCRIPTION https://tinyurl.com/ycynaxd8 It is a 2-3 day bikepacking great ride, and also an excellent tramping or walking trail. For my trip I took my time - four days - so I could make this film…and also because I’m no fit or expert biker. The Old Ghost Road is an 85km single track mountain bike trail and walking path in the upper South Island of New Zealand. It begins at Lyell - near the town of Murchison - and it ends on the West Coast at the small settlement of Seddonville. The Old Ghost Road traverses mountains, deep river gorges, dense forest and rough backcountry. It is remote, exposed, with alpine sections above the treeline. On a clear day, there are incredible views in every direction. The steep, jagged rocks and golden tussocky peaks are spectacular.  The Old Ghost Road is so named because segments of the trail were former gold mining towns, now abandoned to nature. On the first day, as you ride up the hill from Lyell, there are fragments of these previous settlements. They include schools, hotels and communities that sprung up around the gold rush of the late 1800s. While there isn’t much left to see of these towns (a few walls, metal implements, a graveyard), it is fascinating to think that what is now a wilderness area was once well populated.  Because I wanted to take my time - taking photos, filming and exploring along the way - I decided to spend three nights (three and a half days) in the huts on the trail. There was also the small matter of not being fit or young. I could do with losing a few pounds too.  Most people do the ride in two nights (two and a half days) and some masochists in one night (two days). A story was circulating among riders on the trail about a guy who rode to there and back in a day...apparently stopping at the Seddonvile general store and pub to buy a muesli bar.  Had I not been messing about with cameras along the way, I think I could have managed it in three days. But then, what’s the rush? I still enjoyed the buzz of zipping through the downhill sections, but then also had time to scout the alluring side paths, rivers and hills.

Freight services[edit] Stair Case Viaduct Driving piles for the Cass River bridge in 1911 Freight on the line depends largely on coal traffic, with other general freight being restricted to products from the Westland Milk Products factory at Hokitika. In 2003, Tranz Rail carried a total of 2.1 million tonnes of coal over the line. Usually, coal services are headed by two class DX locomotives, and consist of 30 coal hopper wagons, with a total capacity of 1,800 tonnes. On 27 November 2007, it was announced that coking coal from the Pike River Coal mine would be transported to Lyttelton for export. Pike River Coal had reserved under contract with Toll Rail 1.3 million tonnes of capacity for their coal on the line, which since upgrading has a total capacity of 4 million tonnes.[1] However coal from the Pike River facility at Rapahoe stopped since the series of explosions that killed 29 miners in November 2010. The company was liquidated and sold to Solid Energy, the Pike River Mine was closed, and the land incorporated into the Paparoa National Park. The other primary source of coal traffic is from the Solid Energy facility at Ngakawau, north of Westport. Trains to and from Ngakawau use the Midland line as far as the junction with the Stillwater - Westport Line. History[edit] See also: New Zealand Midland Railway Company Railway development in the South Island in the 1870s was concentrated on a main line linking the established centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill and light, easily constructed branch lines serving the arable plains. These later included a branch to Springfield which was reached by January 1880. In 1882 the East and West Coast Railway League was formed and in 1884 a Royal Commission, although fully aware of the construction difficulties of the Waimakariri Valley-Arthurs Pass route, as compared with the somewhat easier but longer Hurunui Valley-Harpers Pass route, chose the more direct route. The construction of the line was rejected in 1883 by a Royal Commission, who argued that despite the significant timber and coal resources of the West Coast of the South Island, the line would not be economic, in the face of limited resources during the Premiership of Sir Julius Vogel, although Parliament did pass the East and West Coast and Nelson Railway Act to enable private interests to construct a line. The major obstacle to engineers and politicians was the Southern Alps. Visiting Franz Josef Glacier New Zealand

02:45
Located in Westland National Park of South Island New Zealand, Franz Josef is one of the two most famous glacier which are easily accessible in the area. I was based in Franz Josef township for the next 3 nights. I woke up this morning, it was pouring rain. I didn't know when it was going to let up. So I bought a cheap poncho at the local tourist shop, didn't help at all. So I decided to just walk it all the way to the glacier which takes about 40 minutes. But lucikly this traveling couple in their camper motorhome stopped and picked me up, and dropped me off at the entrance. New Zealand is a really safe country, most travelers who come here are from other countries.

Established in 1960, the centenary of the European settlement of Westland District, it covers 1,320 km², and extends from the highest peaks of the Southern Alps to a wild and remote coastline. It borders the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park along the Main Divide. Included in the park are glaciers, scenic lakes, and dense temperate rainforest, as well as remains of old gold mining towns along the coast. Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier are two popular tourist attractions within Westland Tai Poutini National Park. The park offers hunting opportunities for red deer, chamois, and tahr, while helicopters allow hunters to access the rugged, mountainous areas. The popular Copland Track runs upstream from the Karangarua River bridge. Along with the mountain scenery visible from the track, there are hot springs at Welcome Flat Hut. In 2010, over 4,400 ha were added to the Westland Tai Poutini National Park, consisting of a number of areas scattered throughout the park, the majority being to the east of Okarito Lagoon.
