The Philex Story. Of 60 years of responsible mining and being an industry leader goes beyond the minerals and metals, beyond the appreciation of the richness of our God given resources. The Philex story is about it's people, about generations of families that have come to, lived in and succeeded because of the mines, the story of communities, of indigenous peoples, of towns, of roads and bridges, schools, hospitals and health cares, livelihood, trees. Philex is not just responsible mining, Philex is education, Philex is health, Philex is livelihood, Philex is environmental protection. The Philex story is a story of sharing, caring, nurturing, growing. The story of nation building, of development, of improving the lives not just the miners and their families but of every citizen of working to remove the tear from every eye of every Filipino. This is Philex and this is our story. www.mechaplan.com

BENGUET, DEAR LAND OF MINE. Benguet province has been a resource base for the national government for several decades. They have experienced the effects of several development aggression projects such as mining (Benguet Corporation, Philex Mining Corporation, Lepanto Consolidated Mining) and dams (Ambuklao, Binga and San Roque). They had first hand experience of the false promises of corporations, and how these projects ultimately destroyed the environment such as lost of forest covers and depleted water sources. This coming Cordillera Day on April 22-24, 2018. let us join the people of Benguet in pushing the government accountability. Kalajo kitedjo maki-Cordillera Day!

As an outdoor enthusiast, I can't wait to share with you guys the latest and sweetest escape I had. There’s nothing quite like getting out in the great outdoors! Breathing in the fresh air and admiring the natural beauty of your surroundings is the perfect way to decompress and feel at peace. No more greater joy can come from life than to live inside a moment of adventure. Adding to the impeccable selection of stunning mountains in Benguet is Mt. Ulap, a hiking heaven located in Itogon. She first welcomed avid mountaineers to her rich, unspoiled lands in October of 2015 and quickly, she rose on top sitting next to the more coveted Mt. Pulag and all for the good reasons. She has been documented as the highest peak among the seven peaks in Ampucao Ridge. The ridge is more popularly known as Philex Ridge, named after the biggest mining company in Itogon. Mt. Ulap Eco Trail has been trending here and there on social media. It features breathtaking view of the mountain ranges of the Cordillera Regions and even on a great day you can see Mt. Arayat, Mt. Ugo and Mt. Pulag along the horizon! Truly a sight to see! Finally, I had the chance to step foot on this mountain. This is the perfect day hike option if you are in Baguio. If you are don't mind getting more sun that your usual dose, this is an easy climb. But on a rainy day, this might be a difficult trail due to the soft and steep slopes of the mountain ridge. She would knock you off your feet during the first leg of the hike not only because of relentless assaults but also because of the beguiling scenery which your eyes can feed on in every direction. Passed the sea of pine trees are endless slopes of grasslands and a marvelous 360 view of the surrounding mountain ranges. Actual Itinerary Day 0 2200 Assembly at Farmer's Cubao 2330 ETD Ampucao Day 1 0345 Arrive in Ampucao Elementary School / Registration 0515 Start Trek 0600 Tumtombek Peak 1 0700 Tapak Kudal 0745 Ambanao Paoay - Camp Site 1 0845 Gungal Rock - Mt. From the bus terminal, ride a jeep going to Central Mall then from there ride another jeep enroute Phillex Mines and get off Ampucao Elementary School. Private Take NLEX continuing to SCTEX taking the exit to MacArthur Highway. From MacArthur Highway turn right to Kennon Rd continuing to Loakan Road then to Balatoc Road until you reach Ampucao Elementary School. Tips Practice the Leave-No-Trace (LNT) principle when visiting and camping. Do not vandalize the stone and tree trunks. For first time hikers, it can take you for about 5-8 hours. The weather is cool at the beginning of the trail but better wear sunscreen since the trail is mostly open and on clear days, it could be quite hot. The foot paths are slippery during rainy season. However, you still need to be vigilant during summer because the dried soil easily crumbles under when stepped on. Feel free to climb DIY style. Mt. Ulap doesn’t require early reservation and they welcome walk-ins. You can do a hot spring sidetrip in Itogon. Jeepneys are located in Lakandula St. (Adjacent to Magsaysay St.) in Baguio City. Tell that you are going to Mt. Ulap and they will bring you to Ampucao Barangay Hall for registration. Registration Fee is P100 each to be paid at the Barangay. As of writing Guide Fee is P400. Number of climbers per guide is not clear at the Barangay but I asked our guide he said maximum would be 10 person. Bring atleast two litters of water. There is no water source so bring at least 3 liters. Signal is present on most parts of the trail except for the descent Be sure to coordinate the jeep at the barangay if you are in a big group. Your guide can also contact a jeep operator in Philex Mining near Sta. Fe. Fare is P50 per head. "March 3 is the 23rd year of the implementation of the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 which caused the landgrab of the ancestral domain of indigenous peoples all over the country where minerals are abundantly found. Indigenous peoples experience continuous, intensified militarization and destruction of their communities due to destructive mining operations. Even the so-called due-process through "free, prior and informed consent" (FPIC) is violated. On the other hand, this process serves as a means to deprive indigenous peoples of their ancestral lands. Now, we face the issue of changing the present constitution which will lead to the worsening condition of the indigenous peoples through the constitutionalization of 100% foreign-ownership of mining. This is the aim of our lawmakers -- to give our lands to foreign corporations. At present, even the small-scale miners continually experience oppression through the formation of the National Task Force on Mining Challenge that is actually a clearing operation to get rid of the small scale miners and pave the way for large-scale mining operations. They say that they intend to protect nature and the environment but the areas they target belong to the ancestral domain of indigenous peoples, who safeguards and ensures that their lands are preserved and taken care of. The Cordillera Peoples Alliance therefore reiterates our call for communities and organizations to continue our struggle, our fight, to oppose charter change and the plans of the government through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), to forcibly displace the small-scale miners from their lands." - Santi Mero, CPA Vice-Chairperson for Internal Affairs
