The Hanging Flume was an open water chute (known as a flume) built over the Dolores River Canyon in Colorado. The Montrose Placer Mining Company built the flume in the 1880s to facilitate gold mining. Some sections of the flume remain attached to the canyon wall, although much of the wood has vanished. The Montrose Placer Mining Company was formed to mine gold from placer deposits along the Dolores River. Hydraulic mining, a popular method of exploiting placer deposits, required water to be efficiently transported, often using wooden flumes to maintain the necessary volume and pressure. The flume connected with a six mile long ditch, both designed to provide water for miners in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado.[ Construction of the Hanging Flume took three years, beginning in 1887. Approximately 24 workers participated in the build, suspended from ropes onto the cliff face. A derrick may also have been used. The construction used 1.8 million board feet of lumber and ended up with a total cost over $100,000. The timber used was mostly Ponderosa pine, a local tree, and it was supported using iron rods. The completed flume was approximately 12 miles (19 km) long and up to 75 feet (23 m) above the river. It began on a dam on the San Miguel River above Uravan, Colorado. The flume's opening (the headgate) no longer exists, and the connecting ditch has been filled. The actual wooden flume was 6 feet wide and 4 feet deep. When in use, it conveyed 80,000,000 gallons of water each day. The flume was only used for three years before being abandoned. The reason was that the mine itself was closed after the discovery that most of the gold was unrecoverable, and the investors in the project only made $80,000 after investing over $1,000,000 into the mine and associated engineering works. After the closure of the mine, local residents reused the timber.

Historic Uintah Mine - Leadville, Co. Anyone who has been to Leadville knows that Mining claims are all but impossible to find. With that in mind we put an exorbitant amount of work and effort into locating this documented gold producer. The substantial and historic mine is set in the Mount Sherman district, just a few miles out of Leadville. Its a very old claim that likely dates back into the 1870s in regards to location. The mine itself is assumed to have been commercially worked from 1900-1920 based on the machinery and many other factors. It has been sporadically worked up to 1981 for the free milling gold values. This has been mostly placer operations as the old drifts and tunnels appear to have been collapsed for at least 30 years. Come see us: https://www.goldrushexpeditions.com/

When the USFS comes knockin' at Miah and Derek's claim, Miah lays down the (mining) law. As a miner it’s important to understand your rights on your legitimate and valid mining claim. Don’t let the Forest Service bully you off your claim. If the proper steps are taken to locate, record, and process your mineral rights claim, then the Forest service cannot stop you from casual use mining. The Montezuma Mine was originally located in 1878, near the apex of the lode that would be come to be known as the Smuggler Lode. By 1884 the mine had been producing thousands of tons of silver and lead ore along with a lot of gold. Old historical documents show that the gold was processed at the lower or 6th level as they shipped all of the silver and lead down to be smelted in Leadville. Somewhere around 1896-7, a larger mining company began digging in near the river following placer gold and silver bits. They called this mine the Carribeau, named for a lake or sea in Europe. They worked in and hit the Smuggler vein at a lower instance. Unlike the upper mine, these claimants immediately patented the property once they were producing ores. Around 1900, the Carribeau, working up, intersected with the Montezuma as they worked down. The Montezuma Mine has a documented 12.8 miles of drifts, raises, winzes and cross-cuts.

A well maintained road passes within a mile of the claims, but the mines lie hidden up an old overgrown road. There are two claims, a lode and placer, that cover two separate mining operations. Estimated years of operation were from the 18960s-1940s. The area is a mining wonderland.

So, you want to know how to find a specific abandoned mine or abandoned mines in general? We will dive into answering that question in this video by taking you along on our search for an abandoned mine that took us two years to locate! Along the way you’ll have the opportunity to observe the tools and techniques we use to find the historic mines that appear in our videos and you will, hopefully, be able to incorporate some of what we have learned over the years (and are now sharing with you) into your own search for mines and mine sites. I will cover how we find out about mines in the first place, the research that we do, the online resources we utilize, the technology we take out in the field with us and more. Whether you are a historian or a gold miner looking for promising sites to file claims on or a mine explorer interested in documenting our industrial heritage or are just curious what is around the area where you live, this video will, hopefully, have something useful for you. Some of you will obviously already know many, if not all, of these search techniques. However, this video is intended to have something for everyone – from the novice to the experienced mine hunter. Many people have no interest at all in finding lost mines, but enjoying seeing them and the efforts of others to find them, and so I have included the footage of the mine when we finally found it for that demographic as well. Fortunately, we don’t normally have to work this hard to find an abandoned mine, but if our search for this mine, although quite unpleasant and frustrating at times, was useful to someone else out there, then it was worth it. Happy hunting! Here are the links for the websites mentioned in this video: https://thediggings.com/ caltopo.com http://www.mylandmatters.org/ http://www.westernmininghistory.com/ https://www.google.com/earth/ https://goldrushexpeditions.com/ ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L If you like these videos on exploring abandoned mines, please subscribe! https://goo.gl/yjPxH1 Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, guess what? We have fun doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a hundred years, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

Our mining claim neighbors called the Cops! People living on the other side of the river where our mining claim is and not liking our mining, called the cops. It appears our neighbors just did not want their liberal utopia disturbed so they call the cops to harass us. The police were very cool as I knew one of them from checking our permits on another river couple months earlier and an Oregon DEQ meeting he showed up at. The rude lady yells to at from other side of river "you need a permit to do that"...we had them of course. She also told cops we were disrespecful and rude to her...which was totally false. She made up her own narrative about what was happening to justify her being annoyed. Liberal tactic # 3, change the narrative or just plain lie! This is the short version of the video, filmed on the Applegate River in Oregon while we were LEGALLY GOLD MINING! In the video, it is a continuous video, shot on my GoPro camera that I was wearing on my head. The video shows me mining and moving around with no editing to show what actually goes on while mining. Then my buddy is helping me move rocks while I'm using a sub-surface dredge...then the cops show up , and I tell him is where the action starts. UPDATE Jan 1st, 2015: In response to some of the comments saying we are uneducated, rednecks and other stuff...the guys in the video are as follows. One is a millionaire CPA, another a self employed business owner, two others are also self employed and owns a body shop and the other an internet marketer and freelance videographer, and lastly one is the son of the CPA guy and currently in college. Oregon Mining Law: Next time this happens, I will ask the State Police to cite the offending people who disrupt our mining operation based on this Oregon Mining Law: "ORS 517.133 Interfering with a mining operation. (1) As used in this section, "lawful mining operation" means any small scale mining operation that is in full compliance with state and federal laws. (2) A person commits the crime of interfering with a mining operation if the person intentionally: (a) Interferes with a lawful mining operation; or (b) Stops, or causes to be stopped, a lawful mining operation. (3) Interfering with a mining operation is a Class C misdemeanor. [1999 c.354 §6]" Here is the GoPro camera I was using: http://amzn.to/19yYus6

Los Angeles County Mines #3: Because these mines are so accessible, I feel the need to have a disclaimer. Enter abandoned mines at your own risk. The safest option is to stay out. In this video, I explored several adits in the Bear Canyon area. These mines are accessed off of Capra Road in Soledad Canyon. The first adit I explored went straight back about 150-200 ft. A bat gate has been installed at the entrance, but due to the frequency of visitors, it has been cut open. Just to the southwest is another gated adit that has also been cut open. This adit was shorter than the first, but flooded due to the recent rains. Near these mines are two very short prospects. On the other side of the horseshoe bend that these mines are located in, I found an interesting crevice in the canyon wall. I’m pretty certain it’s a natural cave, but it could possibly be a mine as there are two very short adits/prospects just downstream. After exploring this area, I headed up Soledad Canyon to the Mouth of Bear Canyon. This is the canyon that the mines got their name from. In this canyon, there are three adits. The first two are directly across from one another. The third one is just upstream and shorter than the first two. Also in the canyon is the foundation for an old structure or dam. I do not know if these adits are part of the same operation I explored in the beginning of the video. Exploring this canyon was fun as the stream was flowing strongly. I kept having to jump across it to avoid getting wet. The adits I explored in this video are collectively known as the Bear Canyon Placer Mine. However, this is odd as these mines are hard-rock, not placer mines. In placer mining, gold is removed from sediment in the bottom of rivers or streams, while in hard-rock mining, minerals are removed from deposits or veins in solid rock. I have a hunch that these adits are not the Bear Canyon Mine, but rather the Orion or Otto Mine that are described as being in this area. The history of this area is very limited, but from my research, I have learned that these mines were worked in the 1930’s.

A very impressive and remote old mining claim. This is a very high elevation Colorado claim located at over 11,800'. As the historical documents note, the mine was worked for silver and gold historically. Gold was in native form and the silver was in a sulphide form. Silver of this sort needs some extensive processing but with values over 20 OST it may be well worth it. The gold volume was noted to be in sporadic, high grade pockets. One of these pockets was rumored to have delivered over 600 ounces in 97% pure, native gold just a few feet underground.

The mine has been noted for a large gold vein which is chased by the drift works. This vein is noted to be 3 ½ feet wide and carrying gold values of over 2 ounces per ton ($48.00 per ton with Gold priced at $20.75 per ounce). The mine is a massive old beast which has not been surveyed or mapped for at least 50 years. The original workings of the mine were reported to be 1600 feet. Today, there should be well over 4000' of workings in the mine.

The Advance mine is abundant in history as a Gold mine up until the 1940s. In lieu of the World War 2 War-Minerals Act L-208, many mines of the era either re-branded as "essential" metals, or shutdown entirely. Fast forward to 2016 and the Advance Mine is no longer standing proud as she once was. Reclamation efforts have destroyed mining structures, backfilled adits, and left trash littered around the site. Unfortunately the artifact remnants of this mine’s history have largely been destroyed.
