Should You Buy Mining Stocks, or the Metal Itself?

10:26
Which is Best? The Metals or the Miners? Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/PeterLeedsPennyStock Both the physical metals themselves, AND the mining companies, will benefit from changes to the price of the commodity. Whether talking about gold, pork bellies, silver, palladium, platinum, or any commodity (from coffee to cotton), there are a few very important considerations. In general, the prices of the penny stock mining companies will increase or decrease by a larger percentage amount than the actual metal itself. This is because of the profit margin increase. If gold (for example) rises 10%, then since the extraction costs are set, the boost to profit margins could be extreme... such as 200%. Thus, the 10% surge in the price of the metal actually translates into a significant gain to the penny stock's profits. However, one issue that all businesses have, which the commodities do not face, would be company-specific risks. Commodities do not embezzle money, or make bad business deals, or get sued, or have to deal with employee deaths, etc... Kevin O’Leary: Stay Away From Gold Miners, Hold Bullion

02:21
Investors are better off holding physical gold rather than mining stocks, according to Shark Tank star and chairman of O’Shares ETFs, Kevin O’Leary. O’Leary said gold miners have had a track record of bad management and poor cost control that have led to underperformance relative to physical gold. The Shark Tank investor himself maintains 5% of his portfolio in physical gold, using a combination of bullion and SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD), the world’s largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund. “The history of mining has been abysmal,” O’Leary told Kitco News on the sidelines of the “Three Sharks In A Castle” symposium. “The value of the commodity is whatever it is every day. I don’t need to have a manager in the middle screwing up his capital cost allowance, not controlling his costs.” _________________________________________________________________ Kitco News is the world’s #1 source of metals market information. Go For the Gold ETF Not the Miners

05:02
The price of gold may be flying so far in 2016, but the yellow metal is still trailing the miners plucking it from the ground. Steven Dunn, executive director at ETF Securities, said investors should not abandon the physical metal to jump on the miner bandwagon so quickly. 'There’s a lot of leverage and debt in the miner space,' said Dunn. 'If you are looking at it from a risk parity type of trade of the metal versus the miners there is a lot more risk associated with the miners currently.' Gold, as tracked by the ETFS Physical Swiss Gold ETF (SGOL), is up 17% year-to-date. The Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX), which holds mining giants like Barrick Gold (ABX), Goldcorp (GG) and Newmont Mining (NEM), is up 41% since the start of 2016. As for the factors driving gold higher, Dunn said it starts with the volatility investors have been feeling in the equity market. Investing in non-precious metals

01:39
When you start to see that your money is losing its purchasing power, imagine what that does to your investments. If all your holdings are funded by the greenback and that value goes down, so does your whole account. Now, you may have heard investing in gold is a way to protect against against a falling dollar. That's a good idea. It's at least 10- to 15-percent of your holdings. But Mr. T's metal of choice isn't the only one to consider investing in. Investing in non-precious medals, such as steel, zinc that are used in infrastructure, is another way. Think about everything that's wearing out right now, all over the world - the building moving forward in developing countries in China and India; all the projects that are to begin under stimulus plans. All will take a lot of construction, and these non-precious metals are the materials that will be in demand. There are lots of ways to invest in non-precious metals, including stock and mutual funds. Open-end and ETF's plays in mining in the countries like Australia, Brazil and Canada. If you invest in these commodities, it could expose you to currencies outside the dollar. So when considering your investments, consider some hard assets.

Gold or silver? Platinum or palladium? How do investors make a decision as to which precious metal is the appropriate choice for portfolio diversification purposes? Rising rates could spell good news for precious metals. That’s because a stronger economy drives the need for manufacturing components, many of which rely on platinum, palladium, and silver. And, a stronger economy boosts jewelry sales, which accounts for half gold’s annual demand.* * International Gem Society For further information, please visit: https://www.etfsecurities.com/institutional/us/en-us Disclosure The ETFS Silver Trust, ETFS Gold Trust, ETFS Platinum Trust, ETFS Palladium Trust and Precious Metals Basket Trust are not investment companies registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 or a commodity pool for purposes of the Commodity Exchange Act. Trusts focusing on a single commodity generally experience greater volatility. The value of the Shares relates directly to the value of the precious metal held by the Trust and fluctuations in the price could materially adversely affect investment in the Shares. Some metals are used in a wide range of industrial applications, and an economic downturn could have a negative impact on its demand and, consequently, its price and the price of the Shares; (2) Investors’ expectations with respect to the rate of inflation; (3) Currency exchange rates; (4) Interest rates; (4) Investment and trading activities of hedge funds and commodity funds; and (5) Global or regional political, economic or financial events and situations. Should there be an increase in the level of hedge activity of the precious metal held by the trust or producing companies, it could cause a decline in world precious metal prices, adversely affecting the price of the Shares. Dave Kranzler | Using Leverage in Precious Metals & Mining Stock Investing

35:50
Returning guest Dave Kranzler of Investment Research Dynamics returns to the program to discuss the use of leverage when investing in precious metals and mining stocks. Dave co-manages a precious metals and junior mining stock fund and is the editor of the Mining Stock Journal and Short Seller’s Journal. Leverage, as any savvy business owner or investors knows, can dramatically increase the growth rate of one’s wealth when things go in your favor. But when you use leverage to invest and things don’t go in your favor, your wealth can begin to evaporate quickly. If the use of leverage goes wrong for the investor it is even possible that you lose all of your invested capital AND more leaving you with a debt to pay off. Many people are attracted to mining stocks because of the built-in leverage they offer relative to the price of the underlying commodity that a mining company mines. Not only are the mining stocks essentially a leveraged instrument, but there are derivative financial products available to the investor that even further increases the leverage already built into a mining stock. In this interview, Dave Kranzler discusses with Bill Powers how to deal with the emotions of greed and fear when investing in mining stocks and also ways in which the investor might utilize the various leveraged financial instruments of margin accounts, put and call options, JNUG and DUST (3x daily ETF’s) and gold and silver futures contracts. 0:05 Introduction of Topic and Guest 1:07 Dealing with the emotions of greed and fear when investing 12:23 Using margin to invest in mining stocks 15:25 Discussing the probability of successful trading 18:11 Using put & call options on mining stocks 24:22 How to play JNUG & DUST (3x daily ETF’s) 29:43 Discussing Gold & Silver Futures Contracts 32:45 Dave’s concluding thoughts regarding leverage Sign up for our free newsletter and receive interview transcripts, stock profiles and investment ideas: http://eepurl.com/cHxJ39 The content found on MiningStockEducation.com is for informational purposes only and is not to be considered personal legal or investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell securities or any other product. The Truth About Silver & Gold Mining Stocks - Mike Maloney

16:49
Mining stocks can be good investments, but you introduce risks that don't exist if you invest in physical gold and silver. I personally did quite well with miners in the early 2000's, but in hindsight a lot of it was simply due to luck. Stay away from the pump & dumpers, and any businesses that associate with them. Watch this week's video to get my current take on gold & silver stocks and the overall economy. If you enjoyed watching this video, be sure to check out the Hidden Secrets of Money website at https://www.hiddensecretsofmoney.com/. It’s a world-leading educational series by Mike Maloney, the bestselling author of the Guide to Investing in Gold & Silver. As Mike explains in the series and his book, we live in an economic system that is made complicated by design. Basically, it’s set up so most people don’t even try to understand it. In Mike’s videos, he breaks down these concepts using easy-to-follow analogies, real pages from history, and animations that tie it all together. CEO Explains Why this Gold ETF Doesn’t Have the Traditional Market Cap Weighting

06:31
There are two types of gold ETFs: those that invest in physical gold and those that invest in gold stocks. The new U.S. Global GO GOLD and Precious Metal Miners ETF (GOAU), launched June 28, falls in the latter category. Please consider carefully a fund’s investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses. For this and other important information, obtain a statutory and summary prospectus here: http://www.usglobaletfs.com/investor-materials/ or call 844.ETF.JETS (844.383.5387). Read it carefully before investing. Investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal. Shares of any ETF are bought and sold at market price (not NAV), may trade at a discount or premium to NAV and are not individually redeemed from the funds. Brokerage commissions will reduce returns. Because the funds concentrate their investments in specific industries, the funds may be subject to greater risks and fluctuations than a portfolio representing a broader range of industries. The funds are non-diversified, meaning they may concentrate more of their assets in a smaller number of issuers than diversified funds. The funds invest in foreign securities which involve greater volatility and political, economic and currency risks and differences in accounting methods. These risks are greater for investments in emerging markets. The funds may invest in the securities of smaller-capitalization companies, which may be more volatile than funds that invest in larger, more established companies. The performance of the funds may diverge from that of the index. Because the funds may employ a representative sampling strategy and may also invest in securities that are not included in the index, the funds may experience tracking error to a greater extent than funds that seek to replicate an index. This Is The Best Time To Invest In Projects – Wheaton CEO

03:45
Current low prices in the metals and mining companies present an attractive opportunity for major miners to invest in new development projects, said Randy Smallwood, president and CEO of Wheaton Precious Metals. “This is the best time for us to be buying and investing, that’s why we’ve been so active. When you see prices down, that is the best time to invest. You don’t want to buy high,” Smallwood told Kitco News on the sidelines of the Denver Gold Forum. _________________________________________________________________ Kitco News is the world’s #1 source of metals market information. South Africa's Answer To Precious Metals & Commodities ETFs | LBMA 2013 | CME Group & Kitco

03:44
Kitco News talks about precious metals ETFs in South Africa with Vladimir Nedeljkovic of Absa CIBW. "We listed our first commodity ETF [NewGold] in South Africa in 2004," Nedeljkovic says. "In the South African market we have about $5b of investments in ETFs...slightly more than half of the investment in commodity ETFs." The trick when launching a new product in the market is to bring products based on investor demand, he adds. With regards to the sentiment towards metals these days, Nedeljkovic thinks people are positive but the sentiment is different towards mining companies versus ETFs or commodities themselves. Watch now for more LBMA coverage. Kitco News, October 3, 2013. Investing In Gold & Silver Mining Companies | Leanne Baker

46:27
Full Description and comments at: https://www.peakprosperity.com/podcast/108856/leanne-baker-investing-gold-silver-mining-companies For precious metals investors looking to increase their exposure to this asset class beyond owning bullion or gold and silver ETFs, mining companies are a natural consideration. Their prices usually move much more dramatically in response to smaller price moves in the underlying metals they mine. In a bull market, it's very possible for the share prices of these companies to increase by hundreds of percents within a year or two. But there are a lot of gold and silver mining companies out there, many of which are small operators. Risk abounds in this sector. And for the past half-decade, most of these companies have been absolute widow-makers for investors. How do we identify which companies are worth considering and which should be avoided? How (if at all) should the small investor go about gaining exposure to precious metals mining companies? To address this, Dr. Leanne Baker, former mining analyst at Solomon Smith Barney and current director of Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd, joins the podcast this week. Silver On Track To Be Best Performing Precious Metal This Year - ETF Securities

04:04
Precious metals remain resilient among the weak commodity prices with significant signs of physical demand, says Mike McGlone, head of research for ETF Securities. Leading the pack is silver, which in the aftermath of the weak September employment number, has been the best performing precious metal. ‘So far in October, it is up 10%, making it the only precious metal up on the year, +2%,’ said McGlone in an interview with Kitco News on Thursday. ‘Silver has been dragged down along with copper the past few years but has diverged so far in 2015: silver up 2% YTD, copper down 18% YTD,’ he added. McGlone explained that supply and demand trends are favorable for the metal with record Indian imports, strong China imports and record coin sales. He also anticipates that this year will see the first annual decline in supply. ‘Technicals appear to have turned up, currently holding resistance at the 200-day moving average at $16 an ounce,’ he said. December Comex silver was last down $0.329 at $15.765 an ounce. Kitco News, October 8, 2015. John Hathaway: Things Look Very Bullish For Gold Mining Stocks

45:49
Full description and comments at: https://www.peakprosperity.com/podcast/114613/john-hathaway-things-look-very-bullish-gold-mining-stocks Since gold topped out in 2011, the precious metals mining sector has been where investor capital goes to die. Mining stocks have performed miserably over the past seven years, missing out completely on the central bank-created liquidity-fest that has raised nearly every other equity sector to record highs. But the long winter of abuse is over, claims highly-respected mining analyst John Hathaway, co-manager of the Toqueville Gold Fund. To John's veteran eye, the conditions in this beleaguered industry have improved substantially. Mining supply is tightening while demand is rising, and the surviving companies have achieved positive cash flows at today's depressed prices. Claiming that we are now past "peak gold", Hathaway expects gold prices to move higher vigorously, propelling the shares of mining companies multiples higher from where they are today.

Why Gold (and Precious Metals) Prices are About to Climb Fast

13:49
Here is why gold and all precious metals prices (platinum, silver, palladium) are about to spike to higher levels. Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/PeterLeedsPennyStock Between the global demand trends, with Central Banks (like in China and Russia) buying up gold by the ton, and the softening of the U. S. dollar, we expect bullion to cost significantly more in 2017, and even going into 2018. Gold is a hedge against global chaos, stock market meltdowns, and other risky situations. Meanwhile, precious metals are also a way to preserve wealth over time. Since 1930, the American dollar has lost nearly 98% of it's purchasing power. With so much irresponsible money generation worldwide, hard assets like physical gold will only increase in demand. We use several of the gold and silver mining penny stock picks we have made for subscribers of PeterLeeds.com and Peter Leeds Penny Stocks to explain trading in sympathy, and the divergence in gold prices between various currencies.

Experts Share Their Best Trading Strategies For Precious Metals (Part 2)

23:16
With gold having traded in a tight range for most of 2018, and the gold-silver ratio hovering around 80, industry experts and veteran investors weigh in on the best ways to play the metals. Here, there is no clear consensus on trading strategies. While the panel shares similar long-term views on where the precious metals are headed, the panelists differ on their views on executing these strategies; from ETFs to mid-tier miners, to avoiding labelling gold as an “investment” altogether. _________________________________________________________________ Kitco News is the world’s #1 source of metals market information. A New Way To Invest In Miners Hitting The Market?

06:22
As investors seek new ways to gain exposure to the precious metals sector, one CEO says he’s prepared to offer a new way to invest in the miners. Frank Holmes of U.S. Global Investors is the man behind the U.S. Global Go Gold & Precious Metals Miners ETF — also known as GOAU — an exchange-traded fund that will give investors exposure to gold producers as well as royalty companies. ‘Royalties are the better bet,’ he told Kitco News in studio just days before the launch of his new product. ‘Royalties give you exposure to the juniors with lower risk.’ And, despite recent pressure in metals prices, Holmes says he still believes it is time to be bullish. Trusts focusing on a single commodity generally experience greater volatility. There are special risks associated with short selling and margin investing. Please ask your financial advisor for more information about these risks. The value of the Shares relates directly to the value of the silver held by the Trust and fluctuations in the price of silver could materially adversely affect an investment in the Shares. Several factors may affect the price of silver including: (1) A change in economic conditions, such as a recession, can adversely affect the price of silver. Silver is used in a wide range of industrial applications, and an economic downturn could have a negative impact on its demand and, consequently, its price and the price of the Shares; (2) Investors’ expectations with respect to the rate of inflation; (3) Currency exchange rates; (4) Interest rates; (5) Investment and trading activities of hedge funds and commodity funds; and (6) Global or regional political, economic or financial events and situations. Should there be an increase in the level of hedge activity of silver producing companies, it could cause a decline in world silver price, adversely affecting the price of the Shares. Andrew Chanin: Are Silver Miners Set For Liftoff?

29:26
Jason Burack of Wall St for Main St interviewed Andrew Chanin Co-Founder of the PureFunds ISE Junior Silver ETF (NYSE Arca: SILJ) http://www.pureetfs.com/etfs/junior_silver.html During this 25+ minute interview, they talk about the ETF Andrew created, Andrew's background and how he worked in the financial services industry as a market maker prior to creating his ETF, why he likes silver and the supply/demand fundamentals for silver. Jason and Andrew talk about the mining industry and the problems gold and silver miners have had to deal with since a cyclical bear market started in 2011 but how the cyclical bear market is probably over. Andrew thinks silver and silver miners will drastically outperform gold and gold miners as the long term secular bull market in precious metals and precious metal mining stocks resumes. Andrew's ETF is one of the top performing ETFs in the entrie ETF universe for 2014 and if you look at the chart of the ETF since the inception in 2013 it looks like a perfect, textbook bullish inverse head and shoulders pattern has formed. What GDXJ Rally Really Means For Junior Miners - Frank Holmes

04:03
Van Eck’s Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF — also known as the GDXJ — is overheated with assets jumping 60% to over $5 billion this year and according to active fund manager Frank Holmes, investors should be careful. Is it too big to succeed? ‘The problem is massive capital is going into the GDXJ and then the index changes,’ he told Kitco News. Holmes explained that the index is expanding its scope into larger miners, which is hurting the small cap gold stocks ‘for no reason.’ As for the gold price, Holmes said investors should expect more volatility ahead of the French election over the weekend. Investing for Beginners 06: Gold ETF & Silver ETF Avoid the Scam

05:16
Investing for Beginners 06: Gold ETF & Silver ETF Avoid the Scam When you invest in a gold or silver exchange-traded fund, you do not become the sole owner of actual gold or silver. For an ETF represented to be backed by gold or silver, the fund managers will contract with a custodian to hold the gold or silver in a vault. The custodian is usually a large, international bank, serving as a custodian for numerous customers. Most of the time, because the custodian is a huge multi-national corporation with thousands of accounts, when gold or silver is bought or sold, the metal never physically moves. Title to the bars of gold or silver is simply transferred from the seller to the buyer as a book entry in a massive computer network. This is where problems can arise: If the custodian is allowed to appoint sub-custodians, and the sub-custodians are allowed to appoint sub-sub-custodians and so on, now the gold or silver is spread out over various geographic locations. The only way to prove these sub-custodians hold enough gold or silver at any given point in time to fully back the account is for the ETF to require the custodian and all sub-custodians to be audited, during non-trading hours, all on the same day. If the gold ETF or silver ETF does not regularly require this type of audit of its custodian and sub-custodians, chances are high that the same physical gold may be purchased or owned by the same entity or individual at the same time. Many metals experts believe that silver ETFs and gold ETFs may hold less than the amount of precious metals they supposedly own or none at all. For most of us precious metals investors, the essence of keeping your hard-earned wealth in precious metals is to own a physical asset that can weather any economic storm. When you put your wealth in ETFs, you simply become an unsecured creditor of a mega-bank that will happily gobble up your wealth if financial turmoil strikes. As is true of any electronic or paper form of wealth, the investor can be denied access to the value of his or her gold ETF or silver ETF shares due to Acts of God, war, force majeure, confiscation, computer glitches, fraud, insolvency, lawsuits, liens, garnishment, etc. Given those caveats, coupled with the very real possibility that silver and gold ETFs are not backed by physical gold or silver, investing in real, physical gold or silver will always be the safer bet. The higher premiums investors pay for physical gold and silver stored either their home or in a segregated fully insured vault account seems a small price to pay in exchange for a safe and secure investment. One final note on silver and gold ETFs, due to high annual ETF management fees, more often than not, it is much less expensive to store precious metals in a private, segregated, fully insured gold and silver vault as opposed to having your silver ETF or gold ETF shares diluted from exchange trade fund or ETF management fees.
