Chinese Americans: Political, Social, Economic, and Cultural History - Iris Chang (2003)
Chinese American history is the history of Chinese Americans or the history of ethnic Chinese in the United States. Chinese immigration to the U.S. consisted of three major waves, with the first beginning in the 19th century. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0142004170/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0142004170&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=82c80a93c28abfd7b70ad771219a93ae Chinese immigrants in the 19th century worked as laborers, particularly on the transcontinental railroad, such as the Central Pacific Railroad. They also worked as laborers in the mining industry, and suffered racial discrimination at every level of society. While industrial employers were eager to get this new and cheap labor, the ordinary white public was stirred to anger by the presence of this "yellow peril." Despite the provisions for equal treatment of Chinese immigrants in the 1868 Burlingame Treaty, political and labor organizations rallied against the immigration of what they regarded as a degraded race and "cheap Chinese labor." Newspapers condemned the policies of employers, and even church leaders denounced the entrance of these aliens into what was regarded as a land for whites only. So hostile was the opposition that in 1882 the United States Congress eventually passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which prohibited immigration from China for the next ten years. This law was then extended by the Geary Act in 1892. The Chinese Exclusion Act was the only U.S. law ever to prevent immigration and naturalization on the basis of race. These laws not only prevented new immigration but also brought additional suffering as they prevented the reunion of the families of thousands of Chinese men already living in the U.S. (that is, men who had left China without their wives and children); anti-miscegenation laws in many states prohibited Chinese men from marrying white women. In 1924 the law barred further entries of Chinese; those already in the United States had been ineligible for citizenship since the previous year. Also by 1924, all Asian immigrants (except people from the Philippines, which had been annexed by the United States in 1898) were utterly excluded by law, denied citizenship and naturalization, and prevented from marrying Caucasians or owning land.[3] Only since the 1940s when the US and China became allies during World War II, did the situation for Chinese Americans begin to improve, as restrictions on entry into the country, naturalization and mixed marriage were being lessened. In 1943, Chinese immigration to the U.S. was once again permitted — by way of the Magnuson Act — thereby repealing 61 years of official racial discrimination against the Chinese. Large-scale Chinese immigration did not occur until 1965 when the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965[4] lifted national origin quotas.[5] After World War II, anti-Asian prejudice began to decrease, and Chinese immigrants, along with other Asians (such as Japanese, Koreans, Indians and Vietnamese), have adapted and advanced. Currently, the Chinese constitute the largest ethnic group of Asian Americans (about 22%), and have confounded earlier expectations that they would form an indigestible mass in American society.[citation needed] For example, many Chinese Americans of American birth may know little or nothing about traditional Chinese culture, just as European Americans and African Americans may know little or nothing about the original cultures of their ancestors. As of the 2010 United States Census, there are more than 3.3 million Chinese in the United States — about 1% of the total population. The influx continues, where each year ethnic Chinese people from the People's Republic of China, Taiwan and to a lesser extent Southeast Asia move to the US, surpassing Hispanic and Latino immigration by 2012. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_American_history

PRACTICE: Outside In | Inside Out
This symposium considers discourse on contemporary issues of design practice in two parts: the external pressures of economic, environmental, and political systems, and internal forces of tools, techniques, and strategies for design. Addressing the multifaceted nature of the profession, we will explore themes for the design of practice, such as work and labor, tools and technology, and ethics and agency. The symposium highlights potential avenues for the growth and constitution of practice, as well as the issues currently at stake within the profession. The following discussions confront pressing questions regarding the shifting responsibilities of design practice, and the future of practice itself. This symposium is generously sponsored by the Carl M. Sapers Ethics in Practice Fund, and co-hosted by the GSD Practice Platform and the Department of Architecture. Panelists: Aaron Cayer, Neena Verma, Jesse Keenan, Alison Brooks, Eduard Sancho Pou, Sawako Kaijima, Randy Deutsch, Robert Pietrusko Moderators: Mark Lee, Grace La

Extractive Industries in LATAM: Promises and Dilemmas of Oil and Mining Industries
For more on this event, visit: http://bit.ly/2zBkQ3d For more on the Georgetown Latin America Initiative: https://latinamerica.georgetown.edu October 27, 2017 | Extractive industries are essential components of the economies of many countries in the region. When projects are well implemented, preserve the rights of affected people and its benefits are well managed, extractive industries can contribute to sustainable development and economic opportunities. However, the impact of extractive industries can also represent a serious challenge to the people impacted negatively by their activities. In recent decades, the importance of extractives industries in Latin America and the Caribbean has increased, with countries seeking to provide a stable investment climate, diminishing legal and regulatory framework, and limiting taxes on private companies. This has accelerated rates of economic growth but it has also been accompanied by significant levels of corruption, social conflict and environmental damage, in some cases undermining democracy and the human rights of many people in the region. How can extractive industries and government regulation balance local expectations with national development plans and calibrate industry regulations and investment promotion? How can stakeholders (policymakers at all levels, civil society, multinational corporations) maximize the benefits of extracting resources, while minimizing the risks of corruption, resource-curse ills, violation of human rights and environmental degradation? How can a favorable investment/business environment be created without sacrificing long term national interests, or jeopardizing local goals and rights? This conference, organized by the different Latin American students’ organizations at Georgetown University and sponsored by Georgetown University’s Latin American Initiative, aims to bring together researchers, practitioners and community leaders from throughout the region that can help us think through this difficult yet poignant questions. Hence, taking the lead from the Latin American Studies Association’s call for a “dialogues of knowledge”, the conference aims to include the voices of indigenous, afro-descendants and other popular sectors in the discussion.

6. Expansion and Slavery: Legacies of the Mexican War and the Compromise of 1850
The Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST 119) In this lecture, Professor Blight discusses some of the conflicts, controversies, and compromises that led up to the Civil War. After analyzing Frederick Douglass's 1852 Fourth of July speech and the inherent conflict between American slavery and American freedom, the lecture moves into a lengthy discussion of the war with Mexico in the 1840s. Professor Blight explains why northerners and southerners made "such a fuss" over the issue of slavery's expansion into the western territories. The lecture ends with the crisis over California's admission to statehood and the Compromise of 1850. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Douglass's July Fourth Speech 12:36 - Chapter 2. Germany's SPD party struggles for momentum
Germany's Social Democrats party have been holding its party conference, hoping to increase their popularity in advance of September's general election. The centre-left party had a brief boost in the polls earlier this year when Martin Schulz came back from decades in Brussels to become party leader. But the so-called Schulz effect wore off. 1,000 years missing in History? part 2
If you know anything about ancient history then you know there is not one primary source for anything earlier than 1100 AD or CE, are all of those stories about Ceasar, Mark Antony, Cleopatra, made up by academia? to have scholarship and careers? so first, we have to establish just what ancient is. Baalbek is not just some big slabs on the ground it is a Temple city made for and by giants, academia has not one clue as to who even built it, but, they don't even mention the place, I think because they know that whoever it was, was the real Rome. The age it is not known. Velikovsky was all over that. an event like the JFK assassination will happen that opens your eyes to see there is a problem, then eventually there comes a time where you think everything you thought you knew is wrong. Baalbek giants somebody cleaned the place up for nothing to be found there, who? what is or isn't true about anything on Rome or Greece. We are seen as ignorant eaters. Lol, how ancient is ancient history really? a few hundred years? Their formula is simple and straightforward, war-killing-disease = profit, peace-good health- longevity = no profit, too many people, Scaliger has been brought up so I thought to learn a bit about him from a different source etc. After looking at a few sources it looks like he was a real scholar but, standing in the way of those wishing to have their way through the usurping then control of the institutions they threw events much further in the past and succeeded. N30 ~ 'Occupy UK' ~ Mass strike bites Britain
From: RussiaToday on Nov 30, 2011 http://youtu.be/IMF7FNLdy9I More than 2 million participants put the public sector on hold in the UK, as unions stage a massive public sector strike. It is the largest of its kind in 30 years. RT on Twitter http://twitter.com/RT_com RT on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/RTnews ............................................................. Live coverage of the N30 strike in northern Ireland category ireland / britain | workplace struggles | news report author Wednesday November 30, 2011 17:22author by various - Workers Solidarity Movement (WSM) Report this post to the editors WSM members & supporters in northern Ireland will be providing live coverage of the N30 Pension strikes today via our Twitter feed. The strike is part of the UK wide public sector strike against attacks on public sector pensions, attacks similar to those imposed on public sector workers in southern Ireland over the last couple of years. They are part of a Europe wide offensive against the pensions rights of workers. In Northern Ireland the main unions involved include the Northern Ireland Public Service Association (NIPSA), Unite, UNISON, the teacher's union NASUWT, the National Union of Teachers, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, the National Association of Head Teachers and the Irish National Teachers Organisation. Those unions in italics also organise in the south. The strike involves workers in health, education, transport and the civil service, workers in local councils, the assembly, the PSNI, Human Rights Commission, the Equality Commission and the Labour Relations Agency a wide range of other non-departmental public bodies are also expected to take part. http://www.anarkismo.net/article/21280 ................................................................... N30 strike: a new chapter in Britain's history of collective action Printer-friendly versionSend to friendPDF versionFacebookTwitter Kwadkwo Kari-Kari, 30 November 2011 Today is momentous and the mark of a new chapter in the history of British Industrial Relations. Never before has Britain been faced with over 2 million workers collectively going on strike on the same day. Though the numbers are impressive, the cause listed as public sector pensions is a very narrow one, when compared to previous historic national struggles. This is a direct result of the legacy of anti-union laws passed first in 1927 and then under progressive employment acts from 1980 to 1996. All by Conservative governments. Britain's first and only General Strike in 1926 involved approximately 1.5 million workers and went on for 9 days. Trains stayed in their depots, schools were empty, shops did not open, chauffeurs refused to drive their masters' cars, printers (bar the government's and the British Worker newspapers) refused to publish, workers in all industries put down their tools. Their cause was resisting the continued cutting of miners' wages and attempts to increase their working week, forcing hundreds of thousands of those "hard working families" politicians today talk about, into absolute poverty. British workers were so disgusted at the idea that rich, fat mine owners were willing to starve working class families to "normalise" (read maintain) their profit levels in a recession, that as a national collective, the workers protested by taking solidarity strike action. http://www.opendemocracy.net/ourkingdom/kwadkwo-kari-kari/n30-strike-new-chapter-in-britains-history-of-collective-action

The seminar 22nd October 1947-Pakistan Invasion Not A Tribal Raid was organized by J&K Unity Foundation to remember the first invasion of Indian territories in Jammu and Kashmir by the Pakistani Army on 22nd October 1947. Tariq, President Jiyo Aur Jeene Do, Ankur Sharma, Advocate, Er. Ghulam Ali Khatana, State Secretary Bharatiya Janata Party, Prof. Hari Om, President Jammu for India, Ajaat Jamwal, President J&K Unity Foundation spoke on the occasion. Ajaat Jamwal, President J&K Unity Foundation in his address said that Pakistan uses non- State actors as part of its State policy and this started with Major General Akbar Khan, the incharge of J&K Operation in 1947. This has been amply admitted by Pakistan writers, he said adding “Maj (Retd) Agha Humayun Khan in his book -THE 1947-48 Kashmir War- The War of Lost Opportunities said that Major General Akbar Khan , the real hero of the 1947-48 War, A DSO of Burma and the architect of philosophy of armed insurrection by aiding non-state actors as state proxies. His ideas of use of non-state actors as advanced in his writings were picked up much later and practised in Afghanistn, NEFA and Kashmir.” Jamwal said that Pakistan is actively engaged in radicalization of youth of Kashmir and parts of Jammu region. During past some years Pakistan has been investing heavily in radicalization of youth, construction of Wahabi/Salafi mosques and by use of cyber space. He said that people of Jammu and Kashmir have to thwart this conspiracy and Govt should also act against such mischief by Pakistan. Sh. Yuvraj Gupta described his personal experiences in Kotli(Now in POJK) during the fateful days of siege of Kotli by the Pakistani forces and the glorious resistance offered by the people living in POJK to prevent the areas from falling into the hands of Pakistan. Dr. Ajay Chrungoo described the 22nd Oct 1947 attack as the operation for second partition of India and beginning of a protracted Jihad against India immediately after the Independence. He stressed that this Jihad is still on and has taken numerous lives and rendered lakhs of people refugees in their own country. He said Nation needs to defeat this Jihad in case India has to survive as a Nation. Er. Ghulam Ali, State Secretary BJP described the 22nd Oct as a day when the State was divided and thousands of people pushed out of their native places. He said families were broken and made to live in separation and blamed Pakistan for the tragedy unleashed on the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that Govt is aware of the radicalization campaigns in the state and will be soon taking appropriate action. Mohd. Ankur Sharma, Advocate said there is an imperative necessity to respond to the Jihadi war both at the ideological as well as ground level. He said Kashmir is almost in the grip of Jihadi forces while Jammu is being penetrated by them using their influence in the Govt and the political establishment. The true tribute to the lakhs of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians who suffered during the Pakistani attack in 1947 will be to stand up unitedly and defeat the ongoing Jihad in the State. S. *LIVE* RightsTalk: Business and Human Rights - Whose Responsibilities?
Overview There have been rapid developments in recent years in clarifying the responsibilities of both governments and corporations for the impact of the actions of corporations on human rights within a state and transnationally. The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights 2011 have set parameters for these responsibilities, and some governments and corporations have acted to respond to them. International documents, national legislation and court decisions around the world have proliferated, and there is also a move to draft a treaty. This talk will explore the key issues and responsibilities in this area, including the legal obligations on governments to act, the extent of the corporate responsibility to respect human rights (and if this has legal consequences), and the need to have access to remedies for victims. This talk is of relevance to government officials, senior corporate officials, legal practitioners, judges, civil society, scholars and others. Bio Professor Robert McCorquodale is the Director of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law in London. He is also Professor of International Law and Human Rights at the University of Nottingham, and a barrister at Brick Court Chambers in London. Before embarking on an academic career, he worked as a solicitor in commercial litigation with King & Wood Mallesons in Sydney and Herbert Smith Freehills in London. Robert’s research and teaching interests are in the areas of public international law and human rights law, with a particular focus on business and human rights issues, as well as the rule of law. He has published extensively on these areas, and has provided advice and training to governments, corporations, law firms, international organisations, non-governmental organisations and peoples concerning these issues.

The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age
The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2010-04-14 - For the first time in recent memory, the CEOs of America's top two coal mining companies, and a leading international company, came to Capitol Hill to answer questions on their positions on climate change, clean energy policy, and the challenges that face their industry. "Just as our national energy policy is at a crossroads, so, too, is the coal industry," said Rep. Edward J. Markey, who chairs the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, the committee that hosted the CEOs. "Whether it's climate science, the viability of 'clean coal,' or safety concerns, I believe Congress requires answers from the coal industry on their ability to be a part of our clean energy future." As Congress continues to push for a comprehensive clean energy and climate bill, questions remain regarding the coal industry's position on the essential science of climate change and their potential to provide cleaner, lower-carbon fuel in the decades to come. The House-passed Waxman-Markey bill offered a pathway for coal to transition to carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The coal mining industry has seen significant developments over the last two weeks. A mining accident in West Virginia has renewed questions about the safety of coal extraction, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has offered new rules on the environmental and health impacts of mountaintop mining. TESTIMONY: Gregory Boyce, President and Chief Executive Officer, Peabody Energy Corporation; Steven F. Leer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Arch Coal, Inc.; Preston Chiaro, Chief Executive for Energy and Minerals, Rio Tinto; Michael Carey, President, Ohio Coal Association. History of Guyana
The recorded history of Guyana can be dated back to 1499, when Alonso de Ojeda`s first expedition arrived from Spain at the Essequibo river. The history of Guyana has been shaped by the participation of many national and ethnic groups, as well as the colonial policies of the Spanish, French, Dutch and British. The slave rebellions in 1763 and 1823 were seminal moments in the nation's history. Blacks came to Guyana as slaves; on the other hand, East Indians came as indentured labourers who worked in order to provide for their families back home. Guyana's recent history is characterized in particular by the struggle to free itself from colonial rule, and from the lingering effects of colonialism. This video is targeted to blind users. Maritime Asia: Securitization of the China Seas
The Institute of East Asian Studies, UC Berkeley, in collaboration with the Department of Politics & International Studies, University of Cambridge, is convening a workshop on “Maritime Asia” with a focus on the “securitization” of the China Seas in the 19th and 20th Centuries. This public forum presents the highlights from the workshop. Anchored in the disciplines of historical and international studies, we view “securitization” as a process of politicization that is geographically defined, historically contingent, resource constrained and trans-temporal in its effects. We also view securitization as the formation of a discourse that is contingent upon complex speech acts in multiple sites. What can we learn from China's modern history about the nation's long-term aspirations as a maritime power? How does Beijing pursue naval preeminence in a post-Cold War political economy of globalizing connections and multilateral agreements? As China aspires to become a major Asian maritime power in the 21st century, we propose to examine the how, why, and the so what, internally and internationally, about its significance.

The Legacy of Nutritional Experiments in Residential Schools
Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and in partnership with the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, with support from the UBC First Nations House of Learning, the UBC Department of History and Kloshe Tillicum (Network Environments for Aboriginal Health Research). Shortly after WWII, when knowledge about nutrition was still sparse, scientists in Canada took advantage of already malnourished aboriginal communities by using them as research subjects to investigate the effects of different diets and dietary supplements. Evidence of these government-run experiments was brought to the forefront by food historian and UBC History alumnus Ian Mosby, and the research has gained widespread recognition. Sometimes the experiments involved decreasing food intake or withholding supplements. Hundreds of indigenous people across Canada were included in the experiments, of which they had no knowledge, and many of them were children in the Indian Residential School system. The fallout from this unethical treatment is still having an effect today. Join us for a panel discussion about this distressing era in Canadian history and find out how UBC’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems is working to address issues such as access to healthy, traditional food; food security for all; and land stewardship.
