Chinese Americans: Political, Social, Economic, and Cultural History - Iris Chang (2003)

57:19
Chinese American history is the history of Chinese Americans or the history of ethnic Chinese in the United States. Chinese immigration to the U.S. consisted of three major waves, with the first beginning in the 19th century. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0142004170/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0142004170&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=82c80a93c28abfd7b70ad771219a93ae Chinese immigrants in the 19th century worked as laborers, particularly on the transcontinental railroad, such as the Central Pacific Railroad. They also worked as laborers in the mining industry, and suffered racial discrimination at every level of society. While industrial employers were eager to get this new and cheap labor, the ordinary white public was stirred to anger by the presence of this "yellow peril." Despite the provisions for equal treatment of Chinese immigrants in the 1868 Burlingame Treaty, political and labor organizations rallied against the immigration of what they regarded as a degraded race and "cheap Chinese labor." Newspapers condemned the policies of employers, and even church leaders denounced the entrance of these aliens into what was regarded as a land for whites only. So hostile was the opposition that in 1882 the United States Congress eventually passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which prohibited immigration from China for the next ten years. This law was then extended by the Geary Act in 1892. The Chinese Exclusion Act was the only U.S. law ever to prevent immigration and naturalization on the basis of race. These laws not only prevented new immigration but also brought additional suffering as they prevented the reunion of the families of thousands of Chinese men already living in the U.S. (that is, men who had left China without their wives and children); anti-miscegenation laws in many states prohibited Chinese men from marrying white women. In 1924 the law barred further entries of Chinese; those already in the United States had been ineligible for citizenship since the previous year. Also by 1924, all Asian immigrants (except people from the Philippines, which had been annexed by the United States in 1898) were utterly excluded by law, denied citizenship and naturalization, and prevented from marrying Caucasians or owning land.[3] Only since the 1940s when the US and China became allies during World War II, did the situation for Chinese Americans begin to improve, as restrictions on entry into the country, naturalization and mixed marriage were being lessened. In 1943, Chinese immigration to the U.S. was once again permitted — by way of the Magnuson Act — thereby repealing 61 years of official racial discrimination against the Chinese. Large-scale Chinese immigration did not occur until 1965 when the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965[4] lifted national origin quotas.[5] After World War II, anti-Asian prejudice began to decrease, and Chinese immigrants, along with other Asians (such as Japanese, Koreans, Indians and Vietnamese), have adapted and advanced. Currently, the Chinese constitute the largest ethnic group of Asian Americans (about 22%), and have confounded earlier expectations that they would form an indigestible mass in American society.[citation needed] For example, many Chinese Americans of American birth may know little or nothing about traditional Chinese culture, just as European Americans and African Americans may know little or nothing about the original cultures of their ancestors. As of the 2010 United States Census, there are more than 3.3 million Chinese in the United States — about 1% of the total population. The influx continues, where each year ethnic Chinese people from the People's Republic of China, Taiwan and to a lesser extent Southeast Asia move to the US, surpassing Hispanic and Latino immigration by 2012. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_American_history

1,000 years missing in History? part 2

01:42:14
If you know anything about ancient history then you know there is not one primary source for anything earlier than 1100 AD or CE, are all of those stories about Ceasar, Mark Antony, Cleopatra, made up by academia? to have scholarship and careers? so first, we have to establish just what ancient is. Baalbek is not just some big slabs on the ground it is a Temple city made for and by giants, academia has not one clue as to who even built it, but, they don't even mention the place, I think because they know that whoever it was, was the real Rome. The age it is not known. Velikovsky was all over that. an event like the JFK assassination will happen that opens your eyes to see there is a problem, then eventually there comes a time where you think everything you thought you knew is wrong. Baalbek giants somebody cleaned the place up for nothing to be found there, who? what is or isn't true about anything on Rome or Greece. We are seen as ignorant eaters. Lol, how ancient is ancient history really? a few hundred years? Their formula is simple and straightforward, war-killing-disease = profit, peace-good health- longevity = no profit, too many people, Scaliger has been brought up so I thought to learn a bit about him from a different source etc. After looking at a few sources it looks like he was a real scholar but, standing in the way of those wishing to have their way through the usurping then control of the institutions they threw events much further in the past and succeeded. After Ban Ki-moon Tells Press to Refrain From Corruption Qs, ICP Asks Why & Of Burundi Crackdown

03:15
On May 19, 2015, Inner City Press asked UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq two press freedom questions: about a crackdown on the media in Burundi, and about Ban Ki-moon's own statement to reporters to “refrain” from certain questions or subjects, see below Amid Scandal, Ban Asks Press to Refrain From Qs About His Nephew, UNanswered By Matthew Russell Lee UNITED NATIONS, May 15 -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is in his native South Korea for five days and Press questions remain unanswered by the UN about his links to the scandal surrounding the suicide of South Korean businessman Sung Wan-jong, and his own nephew Joo-hyun "Dennis" Bahn. Inner City Press asked the UN on May 15, video here. Now on May 19, Ban has urged the media not to ask about, or report on, issues surrounding his nephew. Inner City Press has asked, and will continue to ask, what rules and safeguards apply for example to a company the Secretary General's nephew works with, Colliers International, doing business with the UN, as Colliers Vice Chairman brags. Here is the UN's transcription of Ban's May 19 answer in Seoul: "I’ve seen reports having to do with my nephew. Regardless of whether it’s true or not, I feel quite ashamed that a scandal like this has surfaced and caused controversy. About my nephew’s business activities, I have never known and never took part in any of this. I’d like to tell you clearly that this has nothing to do with me. As the Secretary-General of the United Nations, I am doing a lot of things for the international community and the international community expects a lot from me. While I am fulfilling my duties as Secretary-General, such unnecessary and incorrect allegations or rumours cause inconvenience to my work as Secretary-General. So I’d like to ask you to refrain from doing that." Who is Ban request to "refrain," from what? The questions about his nephew are entirely legitimate, and continue because they have not been answered. They don't just go away. Tellingly, the current head of UN Peacekeeping Herve Ladsous has been allowed to openly refuse to answer Press questions, as if the issues of cover up of rapes in DR Congo, Darfur and now Central African Republic will go away. While the Free UN Coalition for Access openly opposes such non-answering by Ladsous (and Ban's spokespeople), Ban praises and partners with the old UN Correspondents Association, whose leaders praise Ban back, do not ask about conflicts of interest, and have even tried to get the investigative Press thrown out for such reporting. This is the context. On May 18, Inner City Press asked Ban's deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq an event more specific question: did Ban raise any of its relatives' real estate projects, for example Landmark 72 in Vietnam, to the Emir of Qatar in a meeting on September 24, 2013? May 18 video here and embedded below. Haq repeated that Ban is not involved, that he and Ban's lead spokesman Stephane Dujarric have "nothing to add." On May 15, Haq told Inner City Press that the UN does not have to respond about any relative of Ban who is not a UN staff member, even if they do business with, or with the name of, the UN and Ban. Inner City Press has raised that higher within the UN. The JoongAng Daily reports that its affiliate JBTC has obtained an email in which Ban's nephew Bahn Joo-hyun wrote: “QIA said the emir of Qatar had an official meeting with the UN Secretary General at the United Nations [Headquarters] at 11:30 a.m., and [Secretary General Ban] mentioned the Landmark 72 upon request of [Ban Ki-sang]" - Ban's brother. Using the time 11:30 a.m., Inner City Press searched past versions of Ban Ki-moon's schedule and found such a meeting: "September 24, 2013, 11:30 am NLB SG Conf Rm 3rd flr The Secretary-General with H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar" But the UN's read-out for that meeting did not mention real estate: "The Secretary-General met today with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar. The Secretary-General reiterated his call for a political solution to the crisis in Syria, and expressed gratitude to Qatar for its support to the Central Emergency Response Fund and other generous humanitarian assistance. They discussed the Palestine-Israel issue and also the importance of United Nations political efforts in Yemen. The Secretary-General thanked the Amir for Qatari support on the Alliance of Civilizations, sustainable development and climate change. New York, 24 September 2013." The Alliance of Civilizations is headed by Qatar's former Permanent Representative to the UN.

Extractive Industries in LATAM: Promises and Dilemmas of Oil and Mining Industries

01:23:34
For more on this event, visit: http://bit.ly/2zBkQ3d For more on the Georgetown Latin America Initiative: https://latinamerica.georgetown.edu October 27, 2017 | Extractive industries are essential components of the economies of many countries in the region. When projects are well implemented, preserve the rights of affected people and its benefits are well managed, extractive industries can contribute to sustainable development and economic opportunities. However, the impact of extractive industries can also represent a serious challenge to the people impacted negatively by their activities. In recent decades, the importance of extractives industries in Latin America and the Caribbean has increased, with countries seeking to provide a stable investment climate, diminishing legal and regulatory framework, and limiting taxes on private companies. This has accelerated rates of economic growth but it has also been accompanied by significant levels of corruption, social conflict and environmental damage, in some cases undermining democracy and the human rights of many people in the region. How can extractive industries and government regulation balance local expectations with national development plans and calibrate industry regulations and investment promotion? How can stakeholders (policymakers at all levels, civil society, multinational corporations) maximize the benefits of extracting resources, while minimizing the risks of corruption, resource-curse ills, violation of human rights and environmental degradation? How can a favorable investment/business environment be created without sacrificing long term national interests, or jeopardizing local goals and rights? This conference, organized by the different Latin American students’ organizations at Georgetown University and sponsored by Georgetown University’s Latin American Initiative, aims to bring together researchers, practitioners and community leaders from throughout the region that can help us think through this difficult yet poignant questions. Hence, taking the lead from the Latin American Studies Association’s call for a “dialogues of knowledge”, the conference aims to include the voices of indigenous, afro-descendants and other popular sectors in the discussion.

The Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST 119) In this lecture, Professor Blight discusses some of the conflicts, controversies, and compromises that led up to the Civil War. After analyzing Frederick Douglass's 1852 Fourth of July speech and the inherent conflict between American slavery and American freedom, the lecture moves into a lengthy discussion of the war with Mexico in the 1840s. Professor Blight explains why northerners and southerners made "such a fuss" over the issue of slavery's expansion into the western territories. The lecture ends with the crisis over California's admission to statehood and the Compromise of 1850. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Douglass's July Fourth Speech 12:36 - Chapter 2. The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age

02:08:21
The Role of Coal in a New Energy Age - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2010-04-14 - For the first time in recent memory, the CEOs of America's top two coal mining companies, and a leading international company, came to Capitol Hill to answer questions on their positions on climate change, clean energy policy, and the challenges that face their industry. "Just as our national energy policy is at a crossroads, so, too, is the coal industry," said Rep. Edward J. Markey, who chairs the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, the committee that hosted the CEOs. "Whether it's climate science, the viability of 'clean coal,' or safety concerns, I believe Congress requires answers from the coal industry on their ability to be a part of our clean energy future." As Congress continues to push for a comprehensive clean energy and climate bill, questions remain regarding the coal industry's position on the essential science of climate change and their potential to provide cleaner, lower-carbon fuel in the decades to come. The House-passed Waxman-Markey bill offered a pathway for coal to transition to carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The coal mining industry has seen significant developments over the last two weeks. A mining accident in West Virginia has renewed questions about the safety of coal extraction, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has offered new rules on the environmental and health impacts of mountaintop mining. TESTIMONY: Gregory Boyce, President and Chief Executive Officer, Peabody Energy Corporation; Steven F. Leer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Arch Coal, Inc.; Preston Chiaro, Chief Executive for Energy and Minerals, Rio Tinto; Michael Carey, President, Ohio Coal Association. CONGO: DELICATE ETHNIC & MILITARY ALLIANCE LOOKS TO BE WEAKENING

02:46
English/Nat Laurent Kabila's government has accused neighbouring Rwanda of sending troops across its borders into eastern Congo, where ethnic Tutsi rebels reportedly captured two major towns. Kabila, the embattled president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is trying to quash the rebellion in the country's troubled eastern Kivu region. Rwandan fighters and Banyamulenge Tutsis played a key role in helping Kabila march to victory last year and topple longtime dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. Those same fighters today, however, appear to be moving to get rid of Kabila. When these soldiers loyal to Kabila rolled into Kinshasa in May 1997, crowds gathered to cheer on the victorious rebels. Fourteen months later, the delicate ethnic and military alliance that helped thrust Kabila into power is unravelling. Ethnic Tutsis who once joined Kabila's forces are reportedly leading the revolts near the Rwandan border and in the village of Kitona near the Atlantic coastline. Stephanie Wolters of the Economist says the unrest is linked to ethnic tensions between the Banyamulenge Tutsi and Rwandan forces who have turned their guns on Kabila's troops in a bid to protect their ethnic integrity. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The army is extremely torn apart -- or extremely split, rather. The forces that are largely out in the east are Banyamulenge, and Rwandan forces who are not particularly loyal to Kabila. They're loyal to protecting their kind in that part of the country. They are also the ones who seem to be behind this." SUPER CAPTION: Stephanie Wolters, The Economist Intelligence Review When Kabila addressed these crowds in Bukavu last year, he received a rousing welcome. Now Bukavu and nearby Goma, the two biggest towns in the eastern Kivu region, are reportedly under rebel control. While the uprising has taken many analysts by surprise, Kabila's relations with the ethnic Tutsis have reportedly soured, and last week he expelled the remaining Rwandan soldiers from the country. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I don't think anyone quite expected there to be this kind of a military move against the Kabila government, but again, as I said, relations had been deteriorating for some time. And in the past few weeks the Kabila government has been sending signals back to the Rwandan government, and to the people in the Kivu provinces which is where the uprising seems to have taken place largely, that it is relying less and less or is giving less and less influence to the Tutsi faction in the A-F-D-L (Kabila's party) government." SUPER CAPTION: Stephanie Wolters, The Economist Intelligence Review The Banyamulenge soldiers formed the backbone of a rebel alliance which, with Rwandan support, helped Laurent Kabila topple the long-standing Zairean dictator Mobutu Sese Seko last year. Kabila became president and renamed the country the Democratic Republic of the Congo, reverting to the name the country had on independence from Belgium in 1960. Kabila enjoyed a brief honeymoon period feted as a conquering hero, and promised great things for the beleaguered people of the country. But in recent months he has been accused of corruption and nepotism. The ethnic Tutsis in northern Kivu, who have close links with Rwanda, have failed to stand by the president as his grip weakens. During the bloody fighting twelve months ago, the international community decided not to intervene militarily. And while analysts warn of further bloodshed in the country, Wolters sees no reason to expect the world will act to stop the violence this time. SOUNDBITE: (English) SUPER CAPTION: Stephanie Wolters, The Economist Intelligence Review Kabila's government has threatened swift and decisive action against the rebels in the eastern Kivu province. ch 23) The Clinton Presidency and the Crisis of Democracy

01:23:16
chapter 23: A People's History (Of The United States) Howard Zinn. ~ Chapter 23, "The Coming Revolt of the Guards", covers Zinn's theory on a possible future radical movement against inequality in America. Zinn argues that there will eventually be a movement made up not only of groups previously involved in radical change (such as labor organizers, black radicals, Native Americans, feminists), but also members of the middle class who are starting to become discontented with the state of the nation. Zinn expects this movement to use "demonstrations, marches, civil disobedience; strikes and boycotts and general strikes; direct action to redistribute wealth, to reconstruct institutions, to revamp relationships." Maritime Asia: Securitization of the China Seas

01:57:23
The Institute of East Asian Studies, UC Berkeley, in collaboration with the Department of Politics & International Studies, University of Cambridge, is convening a workshop on “Maritime Asia” with a focus on the “securitization” of the China Seas in the 19th and 20th Centuries. This public forum presents the highlights from the workshop. Anchored in the disciplines of historical and international studies, we view “securitization” as a process of politicization that is geographically defined, historically contingent, resource constrained and trans-temporal in its effects. We also view securitization as the formation of a discourse that is contingent upon complex speech acts in multiple sites. What can we learn from China's modern history about the nation's long-term aspirations as a maritime power? How does Beijing pursue naval preeminence in a post-Cold War political economy of globalizing connections and multilateral agreements? As China aspires to become a major Asian maritime power in the 21st century, we propose to examine the how, why, and the so what, internally and internationally, about its significance.

Implementing "Governance/Home Rule" - Marshall County, Alabama

01:03:32
Implementing "Governance/Home Rule" - Marshall County, Alabama Citizen activist from six Alabama Counties attended the Marshall County Commission November 20th, 2008 work session. The purpose, to raise public awareness of the property rights abuse imposed by the County Commission’s enactment of the “junk” ordinance. The “Limited Self-Governance Act” approved by Marshall Voters in 2006 authorized the County Commission to enact ordinances to regulate “health and safety” issues in the County. The brutal "junk" ordinance" was enacted by a vote of the County Commission in 2007. Opposition to the enforcement, as you will see in the video is gaining political support. Nineteen Alabama Counties have enacted the “Limited Self-Governance Act” with two, Mobile and Marshall Counties, leading the implementation process. JSGS Public Lecture~Saskatchewan First Nations and the Province's Resource Future

01:32:00
Presented by Chief Bellegarde, Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Saskatchewan is in the middle of an unprecedented resource boom. With oil and gas in the south, potash in central Saskatchewan and uranium in the North, along with promising mineral plays in various locations,Saskatchewan's economy is growing rapidly. First Nations are determined to benefit from the boom, as Treaty Peoples with strong ties to the land and with promises from government that we will benefit from development. With duty to consult and accommodate requirements in place, Saskatchewan First Nations have become national leaders in working out appropriate collaboration and impact and benefit agreements with companies and governments. Much more can be done. More First Nations can be employed on the resource projects. Greater care can be taken to protect our traditional lands and protect our people from harm. There are important business opportunities for First Nations companies that remain to be developed. First Nations will not stand in the way of properly managed development that is based on consultations and agreements with our communities, but nor will First Nations agree to open-ended development strategies that do not return a fair share of the benefits from resource development with the Saskatchewan First Nations.

Racism in America: Small Town 1950s Case Study Documentary Film

30:16
Racism in the United States has been a major issue since the colonial era and the slave era. Legally sanctioned racism imposed a heavy burden on Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latin Americans. European Americans (particularly Anglo Americans) were privileged by law in matters of literacy, immigration, voting rights, citizenship, land acquisition, and criminal procedure over periods of time extending from the 17th century to the 1960s. Many non-Protestant European immigrant groups, particularly American Jews, Irish Americans, Italian Americans, as well as other immigrants from elsewhere, suffered xenophobic exclusion and other forms of discrimination in American society. Major racially structured institutions included slavery, Indian Wars, Native American reservations, segregation, residential schools (for Native Americans), and internment camps. Formal racial discrimination was largely banned in the mid-20th century, and came to be perceived as socially unacceptable and/or morally repugnant as well, yet racial politics remain a major phenomenon. Historical racism continues to be reflected in socio-economic inequality. Racial stratification continues to occur in employment, housing, education, lending, and government. The 20th century saw a hardening of institutionalized racism and legal discrimination against citizens of African descent in the United States. Although technically able to vote, poll taxes, acts of terror (often perpetuated by groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, founded in the Reconstruction South), and discriminatory laws such as grandfather clauses kept black Americans disenfranchised particularly in the South but also nationwide following the Hayes election at the end of the Reconstruction era in 1877. In response to de jure racism, protest and lobbyist groups emerged, most notably, the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) in 1909. This time period is sometimes referred to as the nadir of American race relations because racism in the United States was worse during this time than at any period before or since. Segregation, racial discrimination, and expressions of white supremacy all increased. So did anti-black violence, including lynchings and race riots. In addition, racism which had been viewed primarily as a problem in the Southern states, burst onto the national consciousness following the Great Migration, the relocation of millions of African Americans from their roots in the Southern states to the industrial centers of the North after World War I, particularly in cities such as Boston, Chicago, and New York (Harlem). In northern cities, racial tensions exploded, most violently in Chicago, and lynchings--mob-directed hangings, usually racially motivated—increased dramatically in the 1920s. As a member of the Princeton chapter of the NAACP, Albert Einstein corresponded with W. E. B. Du Bois, and in 1946 Einstein called racism America's "worst disease." The Jim Crow Laws were state and local laws enacted in the Southern and border states of the United States and enforced between 1876 and 1965. They mandated "separate but equal" status for black Americans. In reality, this led to treatment and accommodations that were almost always inferior to those provided to white Americans. The most important laws required that public schools, public places and public transportation, like trains and buses, have separate facilities for whites and blacks. (These Jim Crow Laws were separate from the 1800-66 Black Codes, which had restricted the civil rights and civil liberties of African Americans.) State-sponsored school segregation was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States in 1954 in Brown v. Board of Education. Generally, the remaining Jim Crow laws were overruled by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act; none were in effect at the end of the 1960s. Segregation continued even after the demise of the Jim Crow laws. Data on house prices and attitudes toward integration from suggest that in the mid-20th century, segregation was a product of collective actions taken by whites to exclude blacks from their neighborhoods. Segregation also took the form of redlining, the practice of denying or increasing the cost of services, such as banking, insurance, access to jobs, access to health care, or even supermarkets to residents in certain, often racially determined, areas. Although in the United States informal discrimination and segregation have always existed, the practice called "redlining" began with the National Housing Act of 1934, which established the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_America

History of Guyana

01:09:01
The recorded history of Guyana can be dated back to 1499, when Alonso de Ojeda`s first expedition arrived from Spain at the Essequibo river. The history of Guyana has been shaped by the participation of many national and ethnic groups, as well as the colonial policies of the Spanish, French, Dutch and British. The slave rebellions in 1763 and 1823 were seminal moments in the nation's history. Blacks came to Guyana as slaves; on the other hand, East Indians came as indentured labourers who worked in order to provide for their families back home. Guyana's recent history is characterized in particular by the struggle to free itself from colonial rule, and from the lingering effects of colonialism. This video is targeted to blind users. Evil runs this Satanic earth, 1967 Mr. Fagan describes truth about the "CFR & Illuminati"

02:43:59
This 3x LP record set from 1967 documents the activities of a secret society known as The Illuminati, and their New World Order. Mr. Fagan describes with documentary evidence how the ILLUMINATI became the instrument of the House of Rothschild to achieve a "One World Government". Mr. Fagan relentlessly uncovered plots for major historical events. Myron Fagan is considered to be the archetype for the PCT (Paranoid Conspiracy Theorist) This Recording is one of the most interesting and yet horrifying, factual stories of some of the most sensational plots in the history of the world. The findings by Mr. Fagan were split into 6 parts, between these 3 records and are presented to you here, in full. Each record has some descriptive notes on the back of each jacket such as... *Eliminate the Illuminati...see that this message is heard!!! * Play this for the unaware, uninformed and well meaning people who desire to hear the truth. Don't waste your time on the hard core socialists who have already repudiated principle. * Buy Air-time with your club or organization! Get free time! No station is too small! * Use at coffees - Luncheons - meetings - everywhere and often. We must succeed - Our children's liberty is at stake - Freedom has no substitute - America no equal! **************************************************************** DISCLAIMER: "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. I am not putting this out as to make any money off this information. I am putting this out to educate others of the atrocities of the past, because we live in a time where history is not being taught in schools, and schools are filling the heads of hundreds of thousands of young children, and young adults with revisionist history, instead of real history. If this continues we are set to have history repeat its self and all of the death that follows. Thank you for your time. This is a wake up call!!! ********************************************************************* If you like what you see, please Like & Subscribe. Keep checking back for more great content. From Distilleries to Stills: Prohibition in Peoria

29:08
Peoria was the whiskey capital of the world. Alcohol production was a business that meant a huge income for the distillery owners, who in turn made a huge contribution to the community in the form of culture, buildings and sculptures—some of which still stand today. It also provided jobs, not just in the alcohol industry but for a myriad of businesses that supported the distilleries. The production of whiskey and beer was a source of important taxes for both the federal and local governments. But times change, and in January of 1920, it all came to an end. This original WTVP production looks at the causes of Prohibition, its effects on Peoria, and the legacy left behind. It also shares a few stories of the more lawless and colorful activities that it inspired.

Poland , officially the Republic of Poland , is a sovereign country in Central Europe. It is a unitary state divided into 16 administrative subdivisions, covering an area of 312679 km2 with a mostly temperate climate. With a population of over 38.5 million people, Poland is the sixth most populous member state of the European Union. Poland's capital and largest city is Warsaw. Other cities include Kraków, Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk and Szczecin. The establishment of a Polish state can be traced back to 966, when Mieszko I, ruler of a territory roughly coextensive with that of present-day Poland, converted to Christianity. The Kingdom of Poland was founded in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented a longstanding political association with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by signing the Union of Lublin. This union formed the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest and most populous countries of 16th and 17th century Europe with a uniquely liberal political system which declared Europe's fir... ____________________________________ Shortcuts to chapters: 00:03:54: Etymology 00:04:29: Prehistory and protohistory 00:06:03: Piast dynasty 00:10:19: Jagiellon dynasty 00:13:41: Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth 00:18:20: Partitions 00:21:28: Era of insurrections 00:26:58: Reconstruction 00:30:40: World War II 00:38:45: Post-war communism 00:41:58: Present-day 00:45:42: Geography 00:47:24: Geology 00:50:40: Waters 00:55:58: Land use 00:57:39: Biodiversity 00:59:21: Climate 01:01:04: Politics 01:03:31: Law 01:07:31: Foreign relations 01:10:20: Administrative divisions 01:11:15: Military 01:15:26: Law enforcement and emergency services 01:16:56: Economy 01:21:14: Corporations 01:22:48: Tourism 01:24:55: Energy 01:26:43: Transport 01:30:42: Science and technology 01:32:44: Communications 01:34:24: Demographics 01:38:07: Languages 01:39:57: Religion 01:44:47: Health 01:46:45: Education 01:49:26: Culture 01:50:25: Famous people 01:51:39: Society 01:54:06: Music 01:58:10: Art 02:00:44: Architecture 02:04:53: Literature 02:09:46: Media 02:12:18: Cuisine 02:14:37: Sports ____________________________________ Copyright WikiVidi. My daddy is not around He’s locked in your jail on the outskirts of town I wish we could dance on that Saturday night Please don’t make me turn it down ’Cause my daddy is not around The dance was held at the prison Her dad wore a shirt and tie He told her “You look like a princess to me May I have this dance tonight?” And their feet never touched the ground They forgot where they were on the outskirts of town They were dancing together on a Saturday night He spun her around and around And their feet never touched the ground After the final song played And the school bus drove away Alone in the dark His heart broken in two Her daddy began to pray Dear Jesus, my girl needs her dad around Not locked in a jail on the outskirts of town Then we could dance every Saturday night I don’t want to let her down Help me turn my life around ’Cause my girl needs her dad around Connect with JJ Heller: https://www.facebook.com/jjhellermusic http://instagram.com/jjhellermusic https://twitter.com/jjheller © 2015 Stone Table Records
