An Authentic Wayanad Homestay Experience in Kerala, India
When you book a homestay at SaveAGram, you're not just soaking up the Wayanad way of life, but also empowering the villagers. Have you experienced a homestay before? Tell us about it in the comments below. ____________ Every time Amala Menon visits the villages of Wayanad in Kerala, India, she gets a surge of pride. “These are villages that God created in the best way possible,” she says. In spring, the hills are covered with luscious tropical foliage, the paddy fields sparkle emerald green, you hear and see birds in their multitude; the abundance can stop you in your tracks. But Amala noticed that the villagers themselves didn’t value what they had. Many perceived city life to be better. She saw an opportunity - empower the villagers within their own ecosystems. Show them the value of what they have and enable them to earn income from it. Amala started SaveAGram (means Save A Village) which invites people to experience village life, first-hand with a local family. In Wayanad, your hosts are the Nambiar family. Kesavan - an accomplished tabla player - inherited the home from his ancestors. His son Rijesh and his wife Souwmya run the farm and are happy for guests to take part in any of the activities. Sumathi, Kesavan’s wife, is the magician. Using produce picked from their farm, often on the day it’s cooked, she creates ethnic dishes specific only to the region from recipes handed down by her mother. There’s all sorts of rotis (Indian breads), chutneys, curries, vegetable medleys cooked over a wood-fired stove. There is a lot more to do in the area - treks into the forest led by a local guide, visits to the unique temples, and volunteering time at a local school that provides free food and education to children of tribal communities. SaveAGram’s concept is to create a ripple of benefit through the community, through experiences that only a local can give you. SaveAGram also offers a homestay in the village of Gaja in Garhwal, Uttarakhand which is at the foothills of the Himalayas. ____________ Learn more about SaveAGram: https://www.saveagram.org/ - Find out what you can do in Wayanad: https://www.saveagram.org/activities-xb8gg - Book a homestay in Wayanad: https://www.saveagram.org/wayanad-packages- - Book a homestay in Uttarakhand: https://www.saveagram.org/gaja-packages- Read the full story: https://www.ourbetterworld.org/en/story/what-happens-when-you-stay-india-saveagram Our Better World suggests that while you’re travelling in India, why not SaveAGram. Goodbye Munnar
It's hard to remember that this beautiful landscape is still a monoculture. A few things to notice: trash by the side of the road (better in Kerala than some places, but still present) and the communist flags. Communism is very popular in Kerala and there was a convention in Munnar while we were there. People who make less than 40,000₹ per month (most of the population) don't pay any taxes. All medical care and all education is paid for, including university, and anyone can go to university if they want!

Green tea bushes in Munnar, Kerala
Lush tea garden in the hills of Munnar, Kerala. Munnar is a hill station on the Western Ghats, a range of mountains situated in the Idukki district of the Indian state of Kerala. The name Munnar is believed to mean "three rivers", referring to the town's strategic location at the confluence of the Madhurapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers. Munnar town is in Kannan Devan Hills ( KDH ) Village in Devikulam taluk and is the largest panchayat in the Idukki district having an area measuring nearly 557 km².[citation needed] The nearest major railway stations are at Ernakulam and Aluva (approximately 140 kilometres (87 mi) by road). The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport, which is 105 kilometres (65 mi) away. This green hill station is surrounded by the country's highest tea gardens. Layers and layers of tea estates, mountain mist, waterfalls and wildlife sanctuaries make Munnar almost surrealistically beautiful. The lofty mountain ranges with misty peaks, sprawling tea estates and serene climate provides a quite and peaceful resort. This little sleepy village atop the western ghats is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams namely Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. Panoramic views of lowflying clouds and mistfilled valleys make it a pretty little heaven with a cool, bracing climate. Misty mountain peaks blend harmoniously in Munnar to create a blissful atmosphere that is hard to describe. Munnar is also famous for the wild orchids locally called Neelakurinchi which blooms once in 12 years. During this time the entire valley turns violet. It is also home to Nilagiri tahr, a rare breed of mountain goat. Munnar was once the summer resort of the British government in South India; it still wears the old charm of the British plantation days.Munnar has a variety of attractions to feast your eyes like placid lakes, meandering streams, misty mountain peaks, sylvan valleys, rare orchids and wildlife. Plantation visits, treks, tea factory visits, cycling, boating, paragliding, day tours to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary etc. add to the excitement. Here you can also have a glimpse of gaur, langur, liontailed macaque, elephants and Nilgiri tahr that roam the stretch of grasslands or are seen climbing the pinnacles of the undulating hills. Tea is an aromatic beverage commonly prepared by pouring hot or boiling water over cured leaves of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. After water, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world. It has a cooling, slightly bitter, and astringent flavour that many people enjoy. Tea likely originated in China during the Shang Dynasty as a medicinal drink. Tea was first introduced to Portuguese priests and merchants in China during the 16th century. Drinking tea became popular in Britain during the 17th century. The British introduced tea to India, in order to compete with the Chinese monopoly on tea. Tea has been historically promoted for having a variety of positive health benefits. Recent human studies suggest that green tea may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer, promote oral health, reduce blood pressure, help with weight control, improve antibacterial and antivirasic activity, provide protection from solar ultraviolet light, increase bone mineral density, and have "anti-fibrotic properties, and neuroprotective power." Additional research is needed to "fully understand its contributions to human health, and advise its regular consumption in Western diets." Tea catechins have known anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective activities, help to regulate food intake, and have an affinity for cannabinoid receptors, which may suppress pain and nausea, and provide calming effects. Consumption of green tea is associated with a lower risk of diseases that cause functional disability, such as "stroke, cognitive impairment, and osteoporosis" in the elderly.
