Subscribe to AboutUNSW if you are a current or prospective student https://www.youtube.com/user/UNSWCommunity The 2015 Kenneth Finlay Memorial Lecture "Grand Challenges for Engineering in Mining" is presented by Professor Ismet Canbulat. This lecture is also presented as part of the UNSW Vice Chancellor's Professorial Inaugural Lecture Series. Synopsis Mining is an inherently challenging multifaceted industry with complex interactions between different disciplines - from exploration of reserves to processing of ore. At the times of high commodity prices some of those challenges were not recognised or simply ignored. Today, the challenges in mining are greater than ever before with increasing costs and decreasing commodity prices, and those challenges are becoming critical today for the survival of mining companies. There have also been many great engineering achievements in mining that made the necessary step-change in safety, productivity and sustainability. But more engineering innovations are required rapidly. This presentation will highlight those engineering challenges that will need to be solved for sustainable mining in the 21st century. About the Speaker Dr Ismet Canbulat has been Professor and Chair of Kenneth Finlay Chair of Rock Mechanics since December 2014. He has 24 years of research, consultancy, management and on-site experience in Turkey, South Africa and Australia. He has a BSc Mining Engineering, MSc and PhD degrees in Mining/Rock Engineering. Using virtual reality to study stress and improve training

02:58
Iowa State University researchers are using virtual reality to study how stress affects decision-making. They’ve studied how firefighters react in a virtual burning building, created interactive military environments, and even built a replica of the International Space Station. The goal is to better understand how people react under stress and eventually develop better training methods.

Natural Language Processing: Crash Course Computer Science #36

11:50
Today we’re going to talk about how computers understand speech and speak themselves. As computers play an increasing role in our daily lives there has been an growing demand for voice user interfaces, but speech is also terribly complicated. Vocabularies are diverse, sentence structures can often dictate the meaning of certain words, and computers also have to deal with accents, mispronunciations, and many common linguistic faux pas. The field of Natural Language Processing, or NLP, attempts to solve these problems, with a number of techniques we’ll discuss today. And even though our virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, Google Home, Bixby, and Cortana have come a long way from the first speech processing and synthesis models, there is still much room for improvement. Keeping peace, through de-mining

00:54
Peacekeeping is not just about patrolling and reconnaissance missions. It also means working to create a condition whereby the residents live in peace and go about their business. In UNIFIL, peacekeepers work day and night, together with the Lebanese authorities, in creating the conditions conducive for the population to build their future. One of the notable successes of the peacekeepers has been the clearing of large swathes of minefields in south Lebanon, allowing the rightful owners to return to their land and till it. Take, for example, on 8 January 2018, UNIFIL de-miners from China and Cambodia found and destroyed 22 deadly anti-personnel mines in Yaroun, clearing 31 square metres of land – all in a day’s work. Within four years since 2006, when south Lebanon last experienced a major war, de-mining constituted UNIFIL’s major operation, working together with the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) and the Lebanon Mine Action Centre (LMAC). The peacekeepers cleared 4.6 million square metres of mine-filled land by detecting and destroying more than 32,600 cluster bombs and other explosive remnants of war (ERW) within the 1,060 square kilometre UNIFIL area of operation. The operation continues to date. In addition, the peacekeepers have cleared over 114,125 square metres of land and destroyed over 3,501 landmines to support the UN Mission’s efforts to mark the Blue Line and to ensure the safety of local residents as well as the UN peacekeepers around 55 UN bases. In 2017 alone, UNIFIL demining teams cleared 2,693 square metres of land and destroyed 317 anti-personnel mines around UN positions throughout south Lebanon. In a recent interview, the Mayor of a small town in south Lebanon, Blida, said that at the end of the 2006 war, the entire village was littered with cluster bombs. “We could not move from one house to another because of the cluster bombs,” said the Mayor, Hassan Abed El Rassoul Hijazi. He stressed the importance of clearing all minefields because “we are an agricultural country and 80 per cent of the people depend on agriculture, livestock and cattle.” If a farmer cannot benefit from his land, he added, “his conditions become very difficult.” Mr. Hijazi added that UNIFIL’s presence “has had a positive impact” in this regard. So far, UNIFIL de-miners have come from Belgium, Cambodia, China, Finland, France, Italy and Spain. UNIFIL’s current de-mining team – from Cambodia and China – is 145-person strong, including support staff. At an event marking the International Day for Mine Awareness (4 April) last year, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Michael Beary said mines are of concern in the UNIFIL area of operations and along the Blue Line, which still account for approximately 1,000 minefields. “Given its often-troubled history, Lebanon is one of the countries whose civilian population continue to be threatened by the scourge of mines,” the UNIFIL head remarked. “It is clear that locating, removing and destroying these hazards, saves lives and is a prerequisite for the restoration of normal day-to-day activity in post conflict areas.” Educating the local population and the children, who are especially vulnerable to the dangers of mines, is critical. In 2017 alone, UNMAS Lebanon, in close coordination with UNIFIL and in support of LMAC, provided mine risk education classes to 2,560 children throughout south Lebanon. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Article: Tilak Pokharel Video Editor: Suzane Badereddine Video camera: Mohamad Hamze Photo: Pascual Gorriz Marcos --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2015 Inductee, Conrad Huss, Amer. Mining Hall of Fame

07:12
The Mining Foundation of the Southwest is pleased to announce that Conrad E. Huss, Co-Founder of M3 Engineering & Technology, was inducted into the American Mining Hall of Fame on 5 December 2015 in Tucson, Arizona. Conrad Huss was born in Chicago in 1941. His father was a carpenter from Germany and his mother a farm girl from Southern Illinois. Although poor, they were industrious and stressed the importance of education to their children. Huss attended the University of Illinois and earned a Bachelor’s degree in English, another in mathematics and almost a third in engineering. After undergraduate school Huss became an oceanographer doing mainly bathymetry for 30 months. As an Ensign and later a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy, he sailed the Pacific with Hawaii and Alaska as ports of call, and later the Atlantic in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Then for half a year he taught high school science and math in West Tampa, Florida. Graduate school took Huss to the University of Arizona where he earned a Master’s and then a Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics, later accepting a professorship to Northern Arizona University. Deciding to put his education to practical use, Huss next worked design engineering jobs for 15 years at Raytheon, RGA and Mountain States Engineers. In 1986, Huss helped found M3 Engineering & Technology Corporation and has been its Chairman of the Board for its entire 30 year history, and its more than 10,000 projects. M3 now has around a thousand employees with offices in Arizona, North Carolina, Argentina and Mexico. Some M3 projects now exceed a billion dollars in value and have taken Huss on business to over twenty countries across the world. M3’s guiding principle has always been “excellent and innovative engineering.” In the early years assistance was provided to the mines in the Southwest to modernize, to expand, and to become the most cost effective in the world. Over time M3 emerged to a full discipline firm offering complete project execution through engineering, procurement and construction management (E.P.C.M.) procedure. Hecla’s La Choya, a gold operation in Sonora, Mexico was M3’s first project and was also the first Mexican mining project built under new government regulations with foreign ownership. To date, more than half of the Mexican mining projects completed in the last 25 years have been managed by M3 with the Goldcorp’s Peñasquito project among its proudest achievements. Huss’ innovative planning and management has helped various operations cope with governmental requirements. Many of these guidelines have now been adopted by other mines. His vision has also catapulted M3 to become a major engineer of large observatories around the world. Huss has five children, four sons and a daughter. See http://www.miningfoundationsw.org/ for more information about the Foundation and http://m3eng.com/ for more information on M3 Engineering & Technology.

MIT Documentary - Founding of World's Best University of Technology

03:40
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1861 in response to the increasing industrialization of the United States, MIT adopted a European polytechnic university model and stressed laboratory instruction in applied science and engineering. Researchers worked on computers, radar, and inertial guidance during World War II and the Cold War. The current 168-acre (68.0 ha) campus opened in 1916 and extends over 1 mile (1.6 km) along the northern bank of the Charles River basin. MIT, with five schools and one college which contain a total of 34 departments, is often cited as among the world's top universities. The Institute is traditionally known for its research and education in the physical sciences and engineering, and more recently in biology, economics, linguistics, and management as well. William Barton Rogers (December 7, 1804 – May 30, 1882) was a geologist, physicist, and educator at the University of Virginia from 1835 to 1853. In 1861, Rogers founded the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The university opened in 1865 after the American Civil War. Because of his affiliation with Virginia, Mount Rogers, the highest peak in the state, is named after him. Boston Tech (1865–1916) Construction of the first MIT building was completed in Boston's Back Bay in 1866 and would be known as "Boston Tech" until the campus moved across the Charles River to Cambridge in 1916. Space Engineers: Eagle One, mining

17:33
A bit of a longer clip this one. It shows my current routine of how I use Eagle One and it's beam drill to mine large quantities of ore. ...includes some in field repairs due to meteors... At the end of the clip you'll get to see my docking routine. I think it's important to de-stress the docking connection with the base by undocking and retracting the docking boom with engines and gyros off, allowing the ship to settle before reconnecting. I also do not lock the landing gear. Beam Drill: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=681276386 Be warned, the Beam Drill is power a power hungry beast and uses more power at longer range. You can use it while hovering, but not recommended beyond site marking and clearing a landing zone or it will SCRAM all your reactors.

Tim Urban knows that procrastination doesn't make sense, but he's never been able to shake his habit of waiting until the last minute to get things done. In this hilarious and insightful talk, Urban takes us on a journey through YouTube binges, Wikipedia rabbit holes and bouts of staring out the window -- and encourages us to think harder about what we're really procrastinating on, before we run out of time. Natural Ways to Raise Dopamine Levels

04:46
Nutritional Yeast Tablets: https://shop.drberg.com/nutritional-y... Dr. Berg talks about how to raise your dopamine naturally. It is a considered a "motivation molecule". Dopamine helps you focus and concentrate better. When someone takes drugs, they are really stimulating dopamine, its not the drug directly that gives you that sensation. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which need a strong acidic stomach to turn protein into amino acids (the precursor). Also insulin resistance can block the ability to absorb amino acids that are needed to make dopamine. L-tyrosine is also a good amino acid to take to build up more dopamine. Being deficient can cause lowered libido, feeling cold, mental sluggishness and carb craving. Vitamin B1 can also help you make more dopamine. Holy basil, rodiola are both great herbs to take to lower stress. But stress or cortisol can block the production of dopamine. Uridine is another compound you can take to increase dopamine levels and this is present in Nutritional Yeast. Also being out in the sun can spike vitamin D and help as well. Your report will then be sent via email analyzing 104 potential symptoms, giving you a much deeper insight into your body issues. It's free and very enlightening. Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 52 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional and natural methods. His private practice is located in Alexandria, Virginia. Dr. Ron Siegel: "The Science of Mindfulness" | Talks at Google

01:05:50
The Science of Mindfulness: Working with Anxiety, Depression, and Other Everyday Problems Mindfulness-based psychotherapy is the most popular new treatment approach in the last decade—and for good reason. Studies demonstrate that mindfulness practices can be effective tools to help resolve anxiety, depression, addictive habits, stress-related medical disorders, and even interpersonal conflict. Mindfulness is not, however, a one-size-fits-all remedy. We need to tailor practices to particular problems. This talk will outline how mindfulness practices work to alleviate psychological distress and how anyone can creatively adapt them to work with the difficulty of the moment. About Dr. Siegel Dr. Ronald D. Siegel is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychology, part time, at Harvard Medical School, where he has taught for over 30 years. He is a long time student of mindfulness meditation and serves on the Board of Directors and faculty of the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy. He teaches internationally about mindfulness and its application to psychotherapy and other fields, has worked for many years in community mental health with inner city children and families, and maintains a private clinical practice in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Dr. Siegel is author of a guide for clinicians and general audiences, The Mindfulness Solution: Everyday Practices for Everyday Problems; coauthor of the self-treatment guide Back Sense: A Revolutionary Approach to Halting the Cycle of Chronic Back Pain,; coauthor of a recent skills manual, Sitting Together: Essential Skills for Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy; and coeditor of the critically acclaimed text, Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, 2nd Edition as well as Wisdom and Compassion in Psychotherapy: Deepening Mindfulness in Clinical Practice with a foreword by His Holiness the Dali Lama. His most recent work is a 24-lecture series produced by The Great Courses titled The Science of Mindfulness: A Research-Based Path to Well-Being. He is also a regular contributor to other professional publications, and is co-director of the annual Harvard Medical School Conference on Meditation and Psychotherapy.
