Dr. Michel Aubertin: Mine Wastes Management @ RIME Part 1
Dr. Michel Aubertin is the Scientific Director of the Research Institute on Mines and Environment (RIME UQAT-Polytechnique) and a professor at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal. Dr. Aubertin gives a keynote presentation on work at the Research Institute of Mines and Environment (RIME). This is Part 1 of the presentation. He introduces the principles of waste rock management, both open pit and underground. He also discusses the challenges of tailings after processing the ore. RIME has been dealing mainly with hard rock mines; the low concentration of minerals in the ore produces sizeable quantities of waste rock and tailings from Quebec mines. Dr. Aubertin emphasizes waste rock piles are not dumps; they are engineered structures. He discusses the knowledge gained in the twelve years that the Research Chair has existed at Polytechnique Montreal and UQAT, and explains the significance of the partnerships between the universities, government and industry companies such as Lamgold and Osisko. The benefits of the collaboration include such benefits as: the new lab facilities in both university locations, the 139 graduate students hired to do research, and the 120 academic papers published. Dr. Aubertin describes the details of several projects, including: improving surface disposal of tailings, optimizing surface disposal of waste rock, and water quality production - including mathematical modeling of the hydro-chemical processes. Dr. Michel Aubertin gave this keynote presentation at the Tailings and Mine Waste conference in Banff, Alberta on November 5, 2013.

State Police Interrupt a Gold Mining Operation in Oregon!
Our mining claim neighbors called the Cops! People living on the other side of the river where our mining claim is and not liking our mining, called the cops. It appears our neighbors just did not want their liberal utopia disturbed so they call the cops to harass us. The police were very cool as I knew one of them from checking our permits on another river couple months earlier and an Oregon DEQ meeting he showed up at. The rude lady yells to at from other side of river "you need a permit to do that"...we had them of course. She also told cops we were disrespecful and rude to her...which was totally false. She made up her own narrative about what was happening to justify her being annoyed. Liberal tactic # 3, change the narrative or just plain lie! This is the short version of the video, filmed on the Applegate River in Oregon while we were LEGALLY GOLD MINING! In the video, it is a continuous video, shot on my GoPro camera that I was wearing on my head. The video shows me mining and moving around with no editing to show what actually goes on while mining. Then my buddy is helping me move rocks while I'm using a sub-surface dredge...then the cops show up , and I tell him is where the action starts. Kenya Miners part 4: Recovering 2-3 times more gold using our shaker table than sluices
This is our fourth video in our five part series of our trip to Kenya to install a shaker table to help eliminate the use of mercury by the smalls scale gold miners. We met with Julius who is the president of the MICA gold mining cooperative and donated a shaker table to MICA to show the miners a different technology for gold concentration other than the use of mercury. Once the shaker table was set up the miners were amazed! The shaker table on average recovered 2-3 times more gold from the same material they had been processing with their blanket/burlap sluices and mercury use. The table can also process the material up to 10 times faster than the blanket/burlap sluices. The result being in some cases 30 times more gold for the miners in the same amount of processing time. LOTS OF GOLD (!!!!) recovered from sluice/placer black sand tailings left by miners
We had a customer bring down some black sand tailings from a placer operation he had access to. He said the miners had removed all the gold the could from the black sands and these were the tailings left over after they were finished. The 30 lbs of material he ran had between 1-2 grams of gold! I was amazing to see how much more gold was recovered by our shaker table from "tailings". This was some very rich material and unlike hardrock ore this stuff is just sitting there in piles ready to be dug up and put on a shaker table, no need to mine it or blast it or crush it. Mopani Copper Mines Mopani Copper Mines Plc (Mopani) is a joint venture company based in Kitwe as 95% of its operations are located there, comprising Glencore International AG (73.1%), First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (16.9%) and Zambian Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (10%). Mopani operates the Mufulira mine, smelter, concentrator and copper refinery and the Nkana mine, concentrator and cobalt plant. MCM produced 134,800 tons of copper and 2,040 tons of cobalt in 2003. MCM is investing in a number of oxide copper projects at several of its properties, including an in-situ leaching project at Mufulira and heap leaching at Nkana, and has achieved significant production increases at its underground mining operations in Kitwe and Mufulira. Copper production from internal sources was supplemented by the purchase of some 18,000 tons of copper in high-grade oxide concentrate bought from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Nkana Mine Nkana mine is one of the largest in Africa, a copper mine located 1 km south-west of Kitwe. The mine is underground as well as open pit and is in operation since 1932 and has produced 6,000,000 tons of copper so far. Its reserves underground include 69,000,000 tons of grading, 16,000,000 tons of copper, and 98,000 tons of cobalt. Its resources include 126,000,000 tons of grading, 43,000,000 tons of copper, and 300,000 tons of cobalt. Copper and cobalt mineralisation occur within the ore shale. Copper mineralisation in the deposits changes from mostly chalcopyrite in the South Orebody, to chalcopyrite-bornite in the Central area and to bornite-chalcopyrite at Mindola. Cobalt occurs as carrollite and cobaltiferous pyrite in approximately equal proportions. The mine produces copper and cobalt from three sources: Mindola Shaft, Central Shaft and South Orebody Shaft. Vertical crater retreat is the predominant mining method while sublevel open-stopping and sublevel caving methods are also used. Other metallurgical facilities, under a management contract by an affiliate of the Anglo American Group, include the Nkana smelter (not owned by Mopani), acid plant (not owned by Mopani) and copper refinery (not owned by Mopani). There is extensive mine tailings around this mine. Nkana Concentrator Nkana Concentrator of Mopani mines, located in Kitwe, treats copper-cobalt sulphide ore using a bulk flotation and segregation flotation flowsheet to produce separate copper and cobalt concentrates. Nkana Concentrator is the most important mineral processing unit of Mopani, as it contributes about 65% of cobalt concentrates treated at the Nkana and Chambeshi Cobalt plants to produce high purity cobalt metal. Konkola Copper Mine Konkola Copper Mine (KCM) is the largest copper mining company in the country. Although based in Chingola, 15% of its operations—namely Nkana Refinery, Nkana Acid Plants and Nkana Smelter (the largest smelter in the nation) -- are located in Kitwe. The Nkana Smelter is the largest primary copper production plant in Zambia. The plant treats concentrates mainly from Nkana, Nchanga, and Konkola mines, which are wholly owned by KCM to produce up to 150,000 tons of new copper. Nkana Smelter The smelter produces high grade anodes, which are electrolytically refined. Sulphur dioxide gas produced by the converters is converted into sulphuric acid which is then used at the Tailings Leach Plant in Nchanga for recovering oxide copper. The smelter also produces discard slag from the reverbs that is rich in cobalt which is stored for future reclamation. This smelter was part of the Konkola Copper Mine's operation at privatisation and has subsequently closed. Nkana Refinery The Nkana Copper Refinery produces electrolytically refined copper in the form of cathodes. The copper meets the LME premium quality grade. The tankhouse has a capacity of about 180,000 tons of finished copper per annum. Nkana Acid Plants There are two single contact sulphuric acid plants at Smelterco, namely the No.3 and No.4 plants. Recovering More Gold from Ore Tailings! Plus ~15lbs of Metal on Shaker Table, Tailing of Gold Cube
I took the tailings of my gold ore sample which was processed in a Gold Cube, and ran it on an industrial grade shaker table, to see if there was any fine gold which the Cube missed. There was a bit which was really fine (flour to talcum powder size) which showed up on the table. What I found really interesting was the amount of other metals recovered on the table (sulfides, silver, telluride, and possibly electrum are all in this ore). There was a good 15lbs worth of metal between the middlings and the high grade con, which is over 10% by weight of the head ore! The initial sample was 139lbs. The Cube got maybe ~2lbs of heavies which I panned out when getting the gold. Perhaps it's not fair to compare a $500 machine with a $15K machine, but the results are interesting nonetheless. And just to clarify, as far as small scale concentrators go, the Gold Cube is my favorite, it does a great job for running volume and actually captures fine gold down to about 200 mesh, which most recreational concentrators and smaller centrifuges struggle with. For fine gold in hard rock ore, on a production basis (tons per day), that extra bit of gold that a shaker table captures will pay for itself over a short period of time. It all just depends on what you're doing, how much ore you have to run, and how fine the gold is!

A Tailings Tale: Where Yankee Doodle Creek Used to Be
Sitting atop the continental divide, in the northern Rocky Mountains of the United States, lies Butte, Montana, a town that boasts a rich and colorful mining history. Today Butte stands as America's largest superfund site, or in other words, the most heavily polluted area in the United States. Among the many miles of superfund in Butte and Quietly tucked behind Butte's infamous Berkeley Pit, sits the Yankee Doodle Tailings Pond. At over 3 times the size of the Berkeley Pit, the Yankee Doodle Tailings dam is one of the world's largest earthen dams. The consequences of mining are permanent when it comes to the Yankee Doodle Tailings Pond. Although the damage to the Butte landscape is irreversible, the hard lessons learned here can and should be applied to mining operations around the world, so that this magnitude of pollution can never occur again.

Diamonox® Technology for Tailings Ponds Water Treatment
This video illustrates the power of Diamonox® Technology for the treatment of water typically found in tailings ponds used for the extraction of heavy oil. Open mining and SAGD operations utilize tailings ponds as a necessary method for recycling water. However the dewatering process can be considerably long (5 to even 20 years) because naphthenic acids render the clay (fines in the order of 2-3um) oil wet, trapping the water and preventing evaporation. Consequently, due to the large amount of water used, tailings ponds tend to be substantially large. Diamonox Technology can process this water in a mater of minutes. The Diamonox® AOP process destroys the naphthenic acids that are bound to the clay, which becomes water wet. The emulsifying properties of the naphthenic acids is greatly diminished. As the clay settles at the bottom, the toluene also clarifies as less oil-wet clay is present. At the end of the process, about 10-12 minutes, the toluene is clear and recoverable, while the great majority of the clay settles at the bottom. Diamonox Technology can have great benefits for the treatment of tailings ponds water: 1) clay settles faster to the bottom enhancing the dewatering process. This will result in smaller tailing ponds with much shorted residence time. 2) the bitumen/toluene can be recovered. About 3% of the tailings waters contain residual bitumen trapped in the clay. Diamonox can enable the recovery of the bitumen. 3) Naphthenic acids are destroyed significantly reducing the toxicity level of the remaining water. The water shown in the video is a synthetic mixture trying to simulate the actual conditions of the tailings ponds. It contains brine and toluene in a 1:1 ratio, 1wt% kaolinite, and 100 ppm sodium naphthenate. The color chance of the water is partly due the oxidation of Si and Al contained in the kaolinite.

H.K Mittal: Geotechnical Fundamentals of Uranium Tailings Management in Canada
H.K. Mittal is a principal of H.K Mittal and Associates, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. H.K. Mittal discusses tailings pond design specific to uranium mines in northern Saskatchewan. The tailings ponds specifications come from over forty years of designing and operational experience with tailings pit ponds in Saskatchewan. Specific tailings pit design (a pervious round) and specific requirements for the tailings themselves (they must be consolidated) informs the operation of the mine especially during winter. Winter operations result in frozen tailings which are a liability since they must be thawed to get full consolidation of the tailings. These problems have led to disposal of the tailings underwater and then the surface water and the tailings are dewatered. Once the surface layer has dried down, a filter cloth is laid and then surface fill is spread while the surface layer is still frozen late in the spring. Highlights of the current practices are presented in the paper associated with this presentation. H.K. Fine gold recovered from Yukon placer jig tailings using a shaker table
Placer miners that run tens or hundreds of yards per hour through their sluices often use a jig as their first tool for recovering the gold from the sluice concentrates. We had another Klondike miner bring some jig tailings (waste material) to our shop to see if we could extract any more values. These miners have been using their jig tailings for road topping for 25 years, but will now “mine” that material and process it over our shaker table to recover the gold their jig missed. Most likely, every larger placer operation has similar values that can be recovered with an MBMMLLC fine-gold shaker table. McIntyre Mine - Colorado - 2016
The McIntyre mine is located just outside of Ouray, Colorado. There is year round, running water on the claim, that can be used in support of mining operations. This site was historically mined for gold, but plenty of pyrite, quartz, and iron can also be found around the claim and in the tailings and the stream.

Great Bear Gold Mining Claims - Arizona - 2017
The Great bear mine is a large and historic gold mining operation, just outside of Quartzsite, Arizona. A series of portals are opened up along a wide quartz body that is heavily concentrated with oxidized iron. Perfect breeding ground for gold. Many of the mine openings connect via trenches. The veins in the mine range from 3 feet to 9 feet as documented by local geologists and the USGS. Old reports note 3 veins that are large and gold bearing. Only the center vein has been worked in earnest. When the mine was shut down by the War Act there was over 30,000 tons of ore (reserves) on the center vein with an average return of 3 OPT in gold. Do your math on that.

Dr. Michel Aubertin: Mine Wastes Management @RIME Part 2
Dr. Michel Aubertin continues his keynote presentation at the Tailings and Mine Waste conference by completing his description of the hydrology and hydraulic conductivities of rock waste piles (the impact of inclining compacted layers). He describes what "diversion length" means in getting infiltration water directed to the non-reactive material at the edge of the waste rock pile. Benches and exposed terraces are the new concepts being explored. Cemented paste backfill (returning waste rock and tailings to underground mines) is discussed, as well as the effect of the filling rate. Aubertin explains: oxidation of tailings has shown that reactive tailings can be used as backfill; the geotechnical behaviour of sludges in impoundments has been described. He also discusses a variety of work on covers on top of tailings to prevent oxidation of reactive tailings (to eliminate acid mine drainage). He discusses the submerged water table model for long term storage of reactive tailings versus water cap tailings ponds and summarizes the projects ongoing at RIME. Dr. Aubertin's keynote presentation was a part of the Tailings and Mine Waste conference in Banff, Alberta on November 5, 2013.
