Placer mining operations, 1960s
Miner Bob Young pans for gold at his placer mine in Southcentral Alaska during the late 1960s or early 1970s. He pans for gold, pushes soil into a sluice box with his D9 Caterpillar bulldozer, moves tailings piles, cleans the sluice box, separates gold from soil, and weighs out the gold. John Baker filmed the sequence during the late 1960s or early 1970s and added narration in about 2000 (Color/Sound/16mm film). Recovering More Gold from Ore Tailings! Plus ~15lbs of Metal on Shaker Table, Tailing of Gold Cube
I took the tailings of my gold ore sample which was processed in a Gold Cube, and ran it on an industrial grade shaker table, to see if there was any fine gold which the Cube missed. There was a bit which was really fine (flour to talcum powder size) which showed up on the table. What I found really interesting was the amount of other metals recovered on the table (sulfides, silver, telluride, and possibly electrum are all in this ore). There was a good 15lbs worth of metal between the middlings and the high grade con, which is over 10% by weight of the head ore! The initial sample was 139lbs. The Cube got maybe ~2lbs of heavies which I panned out when getting the gold. Perhaps it's not fair to compare a $500 machine with a $15K machine, but the results are interesting nonetheless. And just to clarify, as far as small scale concentrators go, the Gold Cube is my favorite, it does a great job for running volume and actually captures fine gold down to about 200 mesh, which most recreational concentrators and smaller centrifuges struggle with. For fine gold in hard rock ore, on a production basis (tons per day), that extra bit of gold that a shaker table captures will pay for itself over a short period of time. It all just depends on what you're doing, how much ore you have to run, and how fine the gold is!

Water Management is becoming a priority in Mining applications Recent disasters from all over the world clearly demonstrate the dangers of traditional mining water management. Tailings dam failures have been on the rise due to extreme or unexpected weather conditions such as heavy rains or earthquakes, overloading the tailings dam beyond design, or poor dam management practices. The risks and failures of tailings dams could be completely avoided by dewatering and dry-stacking the tailings.

State Police Interrupt a Gold Mining Operation in Oregon!
Our mining claim neighbors called the Cops! People living on the other side of the river where our mining claim is and not liking our mining, called the cops. It appears our neighbors just did not want their liberal utopia disturbed so they call the cops to harass us. The police were very cool as I knew one of them from checking our permits on another river couple months earlier and an Oregon DEQ meeting he showed up at. The rude lady yells to at from other side of river "you need a permit to do that"...we had them of course. She also told cops we were disrespecful and rude to her...which was totally false. She made up her own narrative about what was happening to justify her being annoyed. Liberal tactic # 3, change the narrative or just plain lie! This is the short version of the video, filmed on the Applegate River in Oregon while we were LEGALLY GOLD MINING! In the video, it is a continuous video, shot on my GoPro camera that I was wearing on my head. The video shows me mining and moving around with no editing to show what actually goes on while mining. Then my buddy is helping me move rocks while I'm using a sub-surface dredge...then the cops show up , and I tell him is where the action starts. UPDATE Jan 1st, 2015: In response to some of the comments saying we are uneducated, rednecks and other stuff...the guys in the video are as follows. One is a millionaire CPA, another a self employed business owner, two others are also self employed and owns a body shop and the other an internet marketer and freelance videographer, and lastly one is the son of the CPA guy and currently in college. Oregon Mining Law: Next time this happens, I will ask the State Police to cite the offending people who disrupt our mining operation based on this Oregon Mining Law: "ORS 517.133 Interfering with a mining operation. (1) As used in this section, "lawful mining operation" means any small scale mining operation that is in full compliance with state and federal laws. (2) A person commits the crime of interfering with a mining operation if the person intentionally: (a) Interferes with a lawful mining operation; or (b) Stops, or causes to be stopped, a lawful mining operation. (3) Interfering with a mining operation is a Class C misdemeanor. [1999 c.354 §6]" Here is the GoPro camera I was using: http://amzn.to/19yYus6

Keane Wonder Mine Reopening
The Keane Wonder Mine is now open! Step back in time and experience one of the most unique historical mining sites in Death Valley! On November 7th, 2017, the Keane Wonder Mine was reopened after it's closure in 2008. Operating in the early 1900s, the Keane Wonder Mine was one of the most successful gold mines in Death Valley. It now remains as one of the best examples of a historical gold mining operation in Death Valley National Park. What is truly unique about this site is the well-preserved aerial tramway that still has the cables attached. The area was closed in 2008 due to safety concerns. During the closure, the National Park Service covered 50 mine openings and stabilized multiple structures, including several tramway towers and the upper and lower tram terminals. In addition, multiple rounds of soil sampling were done to determine the contents of the tailings and the extent of the tailings spread. When you visit the mine, please do not climb on th buildings, equipment, or tramway. Though stabilized, they are not safe to climb on. To learn more visit: https://www.nps.gov/deva/learn/historyculture/keane-wonder-mine.htm Produced by the National Park Serviceice in association with Bristlecone Media and Death Valley Natural History Association, the official nonprofit partner of Death Valley National Park. Al Hyndman: Oil Sands Tailings, Challenges to Managing Fluid Tailings
Al Hyndman is a Principal Consultant with Magnus Limited. In this introduction to the oil sand industry presentations at the Tailings and Mine Waste Conference, Al Hyndman provides a succinct and informative summary of the challenges in oils sands tailings management. He reviews how fluid fine tailings are formed in the mining and processing of oil sands, the history of tailings management and the types of deposits for capturing fine tailings, as well as the characteristics of the clay that creates the fine tailings challenge. Hyndman explains that the resistance of the mature fine tailings to settling was a surprise to the first large oil sands mining operation at Fort McMurray. The response was to focus on safe dam design for tailings ponds since it was clear that treatment of MFT was going to take longer than expected. Simultaneously, alternative treatment methods were developed. Deep deposits of MFT makes consolidation behaviour a critical element of treatment. Hyndman explains the hydraulic conductivity of the MFT is the most important factor in this consolidation behaviour (and the number of years to get MFT consolidated). Treatments that improve hydraulic conductivity of consolidated MFT are essential. He describes some field demonstrations of flocculation processes and how this research and field testing is being captured in COSIA's industry practice recommendations. Al Hyndman's presentation was part of the Tailings and Mine Wastes Conference, Nov. 4-6, 2013, Banff Alberta organized by OSTRF and the Geotechnical Centre, University of Alberta.

Water Management in Mining
Mine operators must continually reevaluate their risk to flood-related impacts. The Smart H2O Solution is a water infrastructure management solution whose integrated components are designed to improve the operability of systems such as tailings dams, while also ensuring the safety of mines in the event of emergency. The Smart H2O Solution for mining uses 2D flood models to simulate flood propagation, determine risk of inundation, levee design limits, and contingency plans. Groundwater models are used to assess impacts of underground mine flooding while the Smart H2O Dashboard application gives customers full operations visibility. Tailing dam and mine operators use the Dashboard to quickly analyse the state of the dam based on readings in real-time so they can take appropriate actions. Ultimately, the Smart H2O Solution reduces the risk of infrastructure failure by keeping it safeguarded against disaster through the use of real-time monitoring, early warning systems and emergency operations plans.

Resolution Copper Mining Method
Resolution Copper will use the panel caving mining method, a variation of block caving to break up the underground ore. This technique uses gravity primarily to break the rock. Panel caving is more efficient than other underground mining methods for this type of deposit. It will result in lower operating costs and will allow us to mine the most ore while creating the least amount of waste. The technique is also favorable because it is safe, allows a high degree of mechanization, and results in both high production rates and favorable economies of scale. Help us secure Arizona's future. Diamonox® Technology for Tailings Ponds Water Treatment
This video illustrates the power of Diamonox® Technology for the treatment of water typically found in tailings ponds used for the extraction of heavy oil. Open mining and SAGD operations utilize tailings ponds as a necessary method for recycling water. However the dewatering process can be considerably long (5 to even 20 years) because naphthenic acids render the clay (fines in the order of 2-3um) oil wet, trapping the water and preventing evaporation. Consequently, due to the large amount of water used, tailings ponds tend to be substantially large. Diamonox Technology can process this water in a mater of minutes. The Diamonox® AOP process destroys the naphthenic acids that are bound to the clay, which becomes water wet. The emulsifying properties of the naphthenic acids is greatly diminished. As the clay settles at the bottom, the toluene also clarifies as less oil-wet clay is present. At the end of the process, about 10-12 minutes, the toluene is clear and recoverable, while the great majority of the clay settles at the bottom. Diamonox Technology can have great benefits for the treatment of tailings ponds water: 1) clay settles faster to the bottom enhancing the dewatering process. This will result in smaller tailing ponds with much shorted residence time. 2) the bitumen/toluene can be recovered. About 3% of the tailings waters contain residual bitumen trapped in the clay. Diamonox can enable the recovery of the bitumen. 3) Naphthenic acids are destroyed significantly reducing the toxicity level of the remaining water. The water shown in the video is a synthetic mixture trying to simulate the actual conditions of the tailings ponds. It contains brine and toluene in a 1:1 ratio, 1wt% kaolinite, and 100 ppm sodium naphthenate. The color chance of the water is partly due the oxidation of Si and Al contained in the kaolinite.

I had to go back to the same spot where the camo dudes do not want you to go for a better shot. Just before the sun went down. I thought I had a good chance to film these newer sensors. I set up my tripod in the back of my truck while parked at the border on Savio Road. I can't say what these square devices are. Until I find out from someone who really knows, and can confirm it. I now know that they have two heavy cables attached to them. Also there facing bald mountain. Bald Mountain is the tallest mountain between Area 51, and Rachel. The white radar domes can be seen from the Tikaboo Valley, and Sand Spring Valley. This radar station is unmanned making it fully remote controlled. The camera on Bald Mountain is much larger then any other surveillance camera in the area. There is a newer, and smaller radar facility just northeast of this facility. I did get a shot of it, but I felt I needed to hurry. So look to the right of this main facility, and you will see another white radar dome. What has me very interested is the long tailings pile I found made up of big hard rock or waste. There was many mining operations in this area. I have maps that show every mine, open pit, and even small prospect holes. I found nothing that shows that much ore being removed or any mine large enough to do so in the area. The way it is stacked is the way a modern mine would do it today, and heap leach the ore. I doubt any heap leaching is going on because it is clearly waste ore. I could see clearly where the haul trucks would drive up, and dump their load over, and over. That would have had to of been a very large mining operation to make that large of a tailings pile. Dr. Michel Aubertin: Mine Wastes Management @RIME Part 2
Dr. Michel Aubertin continues his keynote presentation at the Tailings and Mine Waste conference by completing his description of the hydrology and hydraulic conductivities of rock waste piles (the impact of inclining compacted layers). He describes what "diversion length" means in getting infiltration water directed to the non-reactive material at the edge of the waste rock pile. Benches and exposed terraces are the new concepts being explored. Cemented paste backfill (returning waste rock and tailings to underground mines) is discussed, as well as the effect of the filling rate. Aubertin explains: oxidation of tailings has shown that reactive tailings can be used as backfill; the geotechnical behaviour of sludges in impoundments has been described. He also discusses a variety of work on covers on top of tailings to prevent oxidation of reactive tailings (to eliminate acid mine drainage). He discusses the submerged water table model for long term storage of reactive tailings versus water cap tailings ponds and summarizes the projects ongoing at RIME. Dr. Aubertin's keynote presentation was a part of the Tailings and Mine Waste conference in Banff, Alberta on November 5, 2013.

A Tailings Tale: Where Yankee Doodle Creek Used to Be
Sitting atop the continental divide, in the northern Rocky Mountains of the United States, lies Butte, Montana, a town that boasts a rich and colorful mining history. Today Butte stands as America's largest superfund site, or in other words, the most heavily polluted area in the United States.
