Finding What to Read: Visual Text Analytics Tools and Techniques to Guide Investigation

01:03:57
Text is one of the most prominent forms of open data available, from social media to legal cases. Text visualizations are often critiqued for not being useful, for being unstructured and presenting data out of context (think: word clouds). I argue that we should not expect them to be a replacement for reading. In this talk I will briefly discuss the close/distant reading debate then focus on where I think text visualization can be useful: hypothesis generation and guiding investigation. Text visualization can help someone form questions about a large text collection, then drill down to investigate through targeted reading of the underlying source texts. Over the past 10 years my research focus has been primarily on creating techniques and systems for text analytics using visualization, across domains as diverse as legal studies, poetics, social media, and automotive safety. I will review several of my past projects with particular attention to the capabilities and limitations of the technologies and tools we used, how we use semantics to structure visualizations, and the importance of providing interactive links to the source materials. In addition, I will discuss the design challenges which, while common across visualization, are particularly important with text (legibility, label fitting, finding appropriate levels of 'zoom').

Decision Tree 1: how it works

Full lecture: http://bit.ly/D-Tree A Decision Tree recursively splits training data into subsets based on the value of a single attribute. Each split corresponds to a node in the. Splitting stops when every subset is pure (all elements belong to a single class) -- this can always be achieved, unless there are duplicate training examples with different classes.

ForceSPIRE : Using Semantic Interaction for Visual Text Analytics

03:25
ForceSpire enables text analytics by combining the massive-data foraging abilities of statistical models and mining algorithms with the sensemaking abilities of analysts. In ForceSpire, we use dimensionality reduction methods and similarity metrics to visualize textual document collections in a spatial visual metaphor, where similarities between documents are approximately represented through their relative spatial proximities in a 2D layout. This metaphor is designed to mimic analysts' mental models of the document collection and support their analytic processes, such as clustering similar documents together. In ForceSpire analysts spatially interact with such models directly within the visual metaphor using interactions that derive from their analytic process, such as searching, highlighting, annotating, and repositioning documents. For example, analysts express their expert domain knowledge about the documents by simply moving them, which guides the underlying model to improve the overall layout, taking the user's feedback into account. User study results indicate that the model incrementally learns in accordance with the analyst's insight, the visualization appropriately adapts to the analyst's expertise, and the model discovers useful knowledge signatures that help analyst's find relevant information. Presentation @ Text Analytics World 2013

29:54
While there is great value locked deep in companies' textual assets, mining this information can be both time consuming and expensive. These costs often serve as a barrier to entry, preventing companies from capitalizing on the business value inherent in text. Fortunately, there are many tools available which can help you begin to transform this unstructured data into actionable intelligence. Through case study examples, this session will explore multiple technologies, including MapReduce, which can be used to tackle many typical text mining problems, help you discover the possibilities buried in your text and boost your business case.

Structured and Unstructured Data

07:28
Data is said to be structured when it’s placed in a file with fixed fields or variables. The most familiar example of this kind of structured database is a spreadsheet, where every column is a variable and every row is a case or observation.

Estimating the Number of Clusters in Big Data with the Aligned Box Criterion: Finding the number, k, of clusters in a dataset is a fundamental problem in unsupervised learning. It is also an important business problem, e.g. in market segmentation. Existing approaches include the silhouette measure, the gap statistic and Dirichlet process clustering. For thirty years SAS procedures have included the option of using the cubic clustering criterion (CCC) to estimate k. While CCC remains competitive, we propose a significant and original improvement, referred to herein as the aligned box criterion (ABC). Like CCC, ABC is based on a hypothesis-testing framework, but instead of a heuristic measure we use data-adaptive reference distributions to generate more realistic null hypotheses in a scalable and easily parallelizable manner. We have implemented ABC using SAS’ High Performance Analytics platform, and achieve state-of-the-art accuracy in the estimation of k.

SAS Live: Experience the Power of Analytics + Hadoop

02:26
On September 29th 2015, the Toronto Stop of the Analytics + Hadoop Roadshow drew a full house. With over 150 attendees from across all industries including banking, insurance, telco, retail, government and SMB, SAS and Hortonworks joined forces to discuss the value behind this cost-effective data processing and storage, paired with SAS’ advanced analytics capabilities. For more information, visit: http://www.sas.com/ca/hadoop Super: The Power of Analytics + Hadoop Super: Steve Holder National Lead Analytics, SAS We’re at the Four Seasons in Toronto, Ontario and we’re here for the SAS Live Event. I think this is a great opportunity for organizations to come check out analytics in action. Super: Mike Luke National Practice Leader, Data Management, SAS A large amount of customers have joined us here today. Customers from retail, from banking, financial services, insurance, et cetera really here to learn the value of SAS and Hadoop. Super: Nick Necsulescu Senior Manager, Customer Segmentation TD Bank I think for me it’s very important to have data, real time at my fingertips to be able to understand customers better. So what excites me about analytics is really the possibilities that it provides. Taking large amounts of data and determining insights. Super: Tim Trussell Specialist of Data Sciences, SAS Now we’re in a time where there’s new analytics coming out every day and the technology’s really pushing forward in terms of what could be done and how can we take it to the next level. For me, analytics offers a huge opportunity for companies to be able to change the way they do business. Super: Richard Boire Partner, Boire-Filler Group You know, in the 25 years that I’ve been doing this, we’ve really moved more towards using data to solve problems whereas you know in the past, a lot of those gut business type decisions were based on intuition. The most exciting thing about Hadoop is really the economics of the platform it provides. It’s changed the way we think about data. They were the first to challenge some of the conventions in the database technology where before you used to have to pay a lot to try and get easy access to lots of information. Hadoop said that’s not going to work for us. We’re gonna go and we’re going to make sure that data is easily accessible and very fast and retrievable. Super: Sujay Deb BI & Analytics Manager, Shoppers Drug Mart One of the themes that I’ve learned today is how SAS can work with Hadoop and can help us process the technology and data and get it to the customer faster. Super: Sanjeev Seesurrun BI Manager, Home Trust It’s just the way that, you know, just being able to get to unstructured data and it’s the SDFS solution where you can store data cheaply. With big data technology, these things can be done in real time. And again, the reason that’s exciting is it helps to solve more business problems much more quickly. I think a lot of the boundaries of data and analytics are being pushed by SAS and other companies to try and understand how we can have cognitive understanding from the data. I’m excited because we’re on the cusp of that now and I think it’s just going to get better. Super: To learn more about SAS® solutions for Hadoop visit: sas.com/ca/hadoop
