Dr. Michel Aubertin continues his keynote presentation at the Tailings and Mine Waste conference by completing his description of the hydrology and hydraulic conductivities of rock waste piles (the impact of inclining compacted layers). He describes what "diversion length" means in getting infiltration water directed to the non-reactive material at the edge of the waste rock pile. Benches and exposed terraces are the new concepts being explored. Cemented paste backfill (returning waste rock and tailings to underground mines) is discussed, as well as the effect of the filling rate. Aubertin explains: oxidation of tailings has shown that reactive tailings can be used as backfill; the geotechnical behaviour of sludges in impoundments has been described. He also discusses a variety of work on covers on top of tailings to prevent oxidation of reactive tailings (to eliminate acid mine drainage). He discusses the submerged water table model for long term storage of reactive tailings versus water cap tailings ponds and summarizes the projects ongoing at RIME. Dr. Aubertin's keynote presentation was a part of the Tailings and Mine Waste conference in Banff, Alberta on November 5, 2013.

FYI, the white bags are Emulsified Ammonium Nitrate. The read cap is TNT and the silver rod that is connected to it by the yellow wire is the blasting cap, it's what ignites the shot. The white pebbles that are emptied into the blast holes by the powder trucks are the main explosive- "ANFO" or Ammonium Nitrate, which is a mixture of fertilizer and diesel fuel. Once the holes are filled with explosives, rock fines or "stemming" is pushed back in the holes and packed down to keep the explosives under pressure. Ozinga's flowable fill can be described as "engineered fill dirt" and is versatile both in form and in function. After we pour the liquid material into a trench or hole, it quickly hardens into a durable fill material capable of carrying heavier loads than most comparable compacted soils or granular fills. The unique material fills voids found everywhere from utility trenches, bridge supports and retaining walls, to tunnels, sewers and basements. The ability to completely fill voids without compaction saves time and labor normally required to compact other fill materials. The fragile pipes and other utilities that pass through the trenches are often damaged when conventional methods of compaction are used. These problems do not occur while using flowable fill because it does not settle after it hardens and the pavement placed over flowable fill does not suffer settlement failures. Inside A Twin Slope Red Ore Mine

Exploring inside a unique twin slope red ore mine. This mine dates back to the 1890's and was in operation until the mid 1920's. The twin slopes were concrete lined for hundreds of feet going deep underground with connecting passage ways to traverse each slope. The remaining sections of the mine are flooded after about 900 feet down. An incredible engineering feat of that time period. Both slopes have different type gauge rails. Not sure why. A rare find to see this type of mine. The dates of when the mine was modernized with concrete lining most likely was from 1910-1920.

Some samples taken and cataloged for our 2018-2019 geochemical sampling program. New logging had reeked havoc on our mineral tenure. All shafts were filled with stumps, logs and sticks. All mine dumps used for road building. Showings with extensive mineralization backfilled with over burden and logging waste. An excavator is a construction machine for loosening and moving of soil and rock, especially for excavating and backfilling of Erdvertiefungen such as pits. Srboljub Masala is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with Thurber Engineering Ltd. He describes pilot scale tests at Shell Canada's Tailings Testing Facility at their Muskeg River oil sands mine in NE Alberta. The tests looked at deposition, dewatering and the development of strength in paste and thickened tailings. Of particular interest is the variation of consolidation parameters with scaling up from laboratory to the field and the dewatering and strength development with natural freeze/thaw processes. While thickened paste tailings is not a technology that oil sands mines are currently pursuing, the tests provide some key observations about tailings performance at pilot scale operations in natural conditions. Srboljub Masala's presentation was part of the Oil Sands Tailings 2014 conference, organized by OSTRF, University of Alberta at Lake Louise, Alberta, Dec 7-10, 2014.

There are two types of mining: underground mining and surface mining. When the coal seam is fewer than 125 feet under the surface, it is mined by surface mining. Coal that is deeper than 125 feet is removed from the ground by underground mining. Surface Mining (Open Cast Mining) Surface mining is used when a coal seam is located close to the surface. Heavy equipment is used to clear the land of trees, shrubs and topsoil. Holes are drilled into the rock and explosives are placed in these holes. The explosion breaks up the dirt and rock called overburden. Large earth-moving machines move the overburden to expose the coal seam. When the coal is uncovered, bulldozers and shovels scoop up the coal and load it into large trucks. All of the coal is mined. In 2000, there were six surface mines in Illinois. The surface mines produced 3,800,000 tons of coal and employed 330 miners. After mining the topsoil is replaced for plants and wildlife to grow again.

Jesse remembered that he knew someone that had a tool that used air to dig through soil, and he thought it just may do the task, so he gave him a call to see if we might be able to borrow it. Miraculously, he said yes, and we got to work! While we were off to a slow start due to a learning curve, this tool surpassed our expectations and we now have a 200' ditch 3' deep that we dug using air! Now, we're on to more challenges to getting a cistern and plumbing system in before winter, but at least our ditch is dug which we thought would be the hardest part!
