√ Mineral Ores | Metals | Chemistry

23:55
#iitutor #Chemistry #Metals https://www.iitutor.com/ The reactivity of a given metal determines the likelihood of finding that metal in the earth's crust in the uncombined elemental form. For some common metals, the likelihood of the metal being found in uncombined elemental form. The likelihood of being found as the uncombined elemental metal is almost the reverse of the activity series. • Minerals are naturally occurring substances, usually compounds, with a definite composition or range of compositions and crystal structures. • Minerals usually contain metals in an oxidised form such as oxides, carbonates, silicates, sulfides and sulfates. • An ore is defined as a naturally occurring deposit that is a mixture of minerals from which a substance, usually a metal, can be economically extracted. • Ores and their constituent minerals form as the result of a variety of geological processes including crystallisation from molten rock, crystallisation from hot aqueous solutions, weathering of older rocks, evaporation from solutions, sedimentation and biological processes. Ores are non-renewable resources formed during the long geological evolution of our planet. Our future use of metals is limited by the finite amounts of accessible natural minerals. There are various economic decisions to be made before an ore body can be developed. The factors that affect the final selling price of the metal include abundance, location, costs of extraction, transportation costs and variations in metal prices. Abundance • The mineral must be sufficiently concentrated in the ore body to make it economical to mine. If the concentration is too low, it may be currently non¬economic, although future improvements in technology can mean that a non-economic ore can become economic. Location • Some regions of Australia are protected for environmental or cultural reasons. Mining cannot be easily conducted it the deposit is located within a high population zone. Costs of extraction • Companies need to determine the cost of mining, milling and extracting the metal from the ore. Aluminium is more expensive to manufacture than copper due to the high costs of the electrolytic process used to make aluminium. Direct cost of extracting metals from their ores Depends on the following: • The activity of the metal. A large amount of energy is used in reducing alumina to aluminium metal because of the stability of the oxide. • Industrial processes used in extraction. Isasmelt is a newer process used in copper ‘matte’ formation which has lowered energy requirements. • Transportation of ores for refining. • The protection of some metals, for example, steel from corrosion, by galvanising. • Reducing costs by recycling, for example, in the aluminium industry. Transportation costs • Consideration must be given to the costs of transporting raw material from the mine to the smelter/refinery as well as the costs of transporting the refined metals overseas Variable metal prices • The world price of metals is constantly varying due to changes in world economies. Mining companies need to make a profit in the long term and the high initial start-up costs and variable metal prices may delay the realisation of that profit. Metals in the Earth’s crust • Most of our metals come from the Earth's crust and a few come from the sea. About three-quarters of the Earth's crust is made up of two non-metals, oxygen and silica. • Aluminium is the most abundant of the metals, but because it is a very active metal it needs large amounts of electricity during the electrolysis process to extract it from its ore, bauxite. It is therefore economic to recycle used aluminium. • Iron is the next most abundant of the metals. It is cheaper to extract from its ore than aluminium. Most is used in steel-making using the basic oxygen steel-making (BOS) process. • If a metal makes up less than 0.001 % of the Earth's crust it is called a scarce metal, for example, copper, zinc, lead, silver, platinum and gold. In some cases a process called 'froth-flotation' is used allowing low-grade ore bodies to be mined more economically. • As prices of minerals rise, conservation and recycling become more attractive options.

Types Of Ores

07:32
Follow us at: https://plus.google.com/+tutorvista/ Check us out at http://chemistry.tutorvista.com An ore is a type of rock that contains minerals with important elements including metals. The ores are extracted through mining, these are then refined to extract the valuable element(s). The grade or concentration of an ore mineral, or metal, as well as its form of occurrence, will directly affect the costs associated with mining the ore. The cost of extraction must thus be weighted against the contained metal value of the rock to determine what ore can be profitably extracted and what ore is of too low a grade to be worth mining. Metal ores are generally oxides, sulfides, silicates, or "native" metals (such as native copper) that are not commonly concentrated in the Earth's crust or "noble" metals (not usually forming compounds) such as gold. The ores must be processed to extract the metals of interest from the waste rock and from the ore minerals. Ore bodies are formed by a variety of geological processes. The process of ore formation is called ore genesis. Important Ore Minerals •Acanthite: Ag2S for production of silver •Barite: BaSO4 •Bauxite Al2O3 for production of aluminium •Beryl: Be3Al2(SiO3)6 •Bornite: Cu5FeS4 •Cassiterite: SnO2 •Chalcocite: Cu2S for production of copper •Chalcopyrite: CuFeS2 •Chromite: (Fe, Mg)Cr2O4 for production of chromium •Cinnabar: HgS for production of mercury •Cobaltite: (Co, Fe)AsS •Columbite-Tantalite or Coltan: (Fe, Mn)(Nb, Ta)2O6 •Galena: PbS •Gold: Au, typically associated with quartz or as placer deposits •Hematite: Fe2O3 •Ilmenite: FeTiO3 •Magnetite: Fe3O4 •Molybdenite: MoS2 •Pentlandite:(Fe, Ni)9S8 •Pyrolusite:MnO2 •Scheelite: CaWO4 •Sphalerite: ZnS •Uraninite (pitchblende): UO2 for production of metallic uranium •Wolframite: (Fe, Mn)WO4 Please like our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/tutorvista

Tungsten - The MOST REFRACTORY Metal ON EARTH!

05:46
Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Thoisoi?ty=h Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thoisoi2 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thoisoi/ So, today I will tell you about the top refractory metal on Earth – tungsten. Tungsten is one of the transition metals, and is located in group 6 of the periodic table of chemical elements. It got it’s name from the mineral wolframite, from which this mineral is obtained. Also, a tiny fun fact, wolfram is a Swedish word. Now if we look at the appearance, tungsten looks like a shiny metal with gray tint, though if you hold a rod of tungsten in the hand you may experience one special characteristic. The density of tungsten is almost 20 grams per cubic centimeter, which is very close to the density of gold. That is the reason why tungsten was used for faking gold bars. A couple of years ago there was news that some gold bars had a filling of tungsten inside, which of course is significantly cheaper than gold. Though the forgery causes skepticism among some scientists. To clearly demonstrate to you how much is 20 gram per cubic centimeter, I will compare the mass of a rod of tungsten and a rod of magnesium. As you can see, the tungsten rod is not only several times smaller than the magnesium one, but is also even heavier than the latter. Also, tungsten is a fairly brittle metal, it is plastic only when it has a very high purity. In addition, tungsten has the highest tensile strength. However, this is not the main feature of this metal. To melt a piece of tungsten, you need to reach an extremely high temperature of 3422 degrees Celsius. That is why this metal was at first used as the filament in incandescent bulbs. However, if you pass a current through the thin tungsten filament, it can overheat and then break, thereby ceasing any production of light . All is due to the fact that in air tungsten oxidizes at a high temperature, forming on its surface oxides of tungsten. Also, the tungsten rod after calcination with a gas burner obtains beautiful colored stains, caused by the different thickness of the oxide film on the metal surface. However, in light bulbs it’s not really about the beauty, more about the ability to actually produce light, hence all the oxygen from the bulb is pumped out and is replaced with a mixture of nitrogen and argon under reduced pressure. In these circumstances, the filament can shine for quite a long time. Also another fun fact, when taking pictures of the the filament in macro I’ve noticed the difference of the more powerful old light bulbs and the less powerful modern ones. In the old light bulbs the filament is made simply in the form of a spiral, but it turns out the modern ones have a double helix, making the filament thinner, which creates more sections of uneven thickness in the yarn, which then leads to the more rapid failure of the bulb. From a chemical point of view, tungsten is fairly stable, it is not soluble in hydrochloric or sulphuric acids. And the most stable compounds of hexavalent tungsten, such as, for example, the sodium tungstate are used as a catalyst of epoxidation in the organic synthesis, andin manufacturing of pigments. Sodium tungstate is soluble in water, but instead of water I will use the 30% acetic acid to obtain the so-called tungsten blue pigment that has a very intense color. To do this, we’ll add a piece of magnesium to the test-tube. Magnesium reacts with acetic acid, releasing hydrogen, which in turn recovers tungsten from the hexavalent state to tungsten oxide 3 with an admixture of other oxides. The formed particles of oxides are of a small size, allowing them to form colloidal solution of a bright blue or blue-green color. The shade depends mainly on the acidity of the environment. The obtained tungsten blue can be used as a good dye for fabric, paper or other items that have the ability to adsorb particles of tungsten blue. The metal tungsten has a very high hardness and is hardly turned on the grinding wheel. Today tungsten finds many applications. First and foremost, this metal is used in filaments for the halogen lamps, refractory electrodes for argon-arc welding, as well as in hard projectile cores in some military shells. The most common substance of the tungsten compounds is tungsten carbide, which also goes by the name Pobedit but mainly in Russia (which if you translate that to English means “will win”). It is mostly used as a cutter when machining metals or stones because of its high hardness. Quality high hardness steel would almost always be composed of tungsten. So that’s what this metal tungsten is like, which is found in practically every house and has the most interesting and unique properties.

Electrolytic Refining of Metals | #aumsum

05:28
Our topic for today is Electrolytic Refining of Metals. Electrolytic refining is the process of obtaining pure metals like gold, silver, copper etc. by the process of electrolysis. Let us learn how copper is refined electrolytically. Take acidified copper sulphate solution as the electrolyte. Take a thick rod of impure copper and a thin rod of pure copper. Make impure copper as the anode and pure copper as the cathode. When current is passed through the solution, the CuSO4 electrolyte splits into copper ions and sulphate ions. The copper ions from the electrolyte get attracted towards the cathode. The copper ions gain 2 electrons from the cathode and deposit as pure copper atoms on the thin copper rod. At the same time, the copper atoms from the anode lose 2 electrons, convert into copper ions and dissolve in the electrolytic solution. In this way, indirectly, copper atoms from the anode deposit on the cathode. Hence, size of anode decreases and size of cathode increases. In this way, all the pure copper from the anode deposits on the cathode. The impurities in the impure copper rod settle down as anode mud at the bottom of the container.

Minerals and Mineral Processing, Extractive Metallurgy, Ore Dressing, Minerals Engineering

06:47
Minerals and Mineral Processing, Extractive Metallurgy, Ore Dressing, Minerals Engineering (Mining, Non – Ferrous Metals, Iron Ore Slimes, Limes, Limestone, Asbestos, Coal Beneficiation, Coal and Ore Fines, Ordinary Superphosphate, Ammonium Salts, Fertilizers) Mineral is defined as a naturally occurring solid chemical substance formed through biogeochemical processes, having characteristic chemical composition, highly ordered atomic structure, and specific physical properties. By comparison, a rock is an aggregate of minerals and/or mineraloids and does not have a specific chemical composition. Mineral resources of India are sufficiently rich and varied to provide the country with strong industrial base. The country is particularly rich in metallic minerals of the ferrous group such as iron ores, manganese etc. It has the world largest reserves in mica and bauxite. In the field of extractive metallurgy, mineral processing, also known as mineral dressing or ore dressing, is the process of separating commercially valuable minerals from their ores. Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth, from an ore body; the term also includes the removal of soil. Materials recovered by mining include base metals, precious metals, iron, uranium, limestone, etc. There are three methods of mining; conventional or manual mining, semi mechanised mining and mechanised mining. Geopolymerisation is the processes which can transfer large scale alumina silicate wastes into value added geopolymeric products with sound mechanical strength and high acid, fire and bacterial resistance. What is COBALT?

02:16
What is COBALT? Cobalt is a chemical element with symbol Co and atomic number 27. Like nickel, cobalt is found in the Earth's crust only in chemically combined form, save for small deposits found in alloys of natural meteoric iron. The free element, produced by reductive smelting, is a hard, lustrous, silver-gray metal. Cobalt-based blue pigments (cobalt blue) have been used since ancient times for jewelry and paints, and to impart a distinctive blue tint to glass, but the color was later thought by alchemists to be due to the known metal bismuth. Miners had long used the name kobold ore (German for goblin ore) for some of the blue-pigment producing minerals; they were so named because they were poor in known metals, and gave poisonous arsenic-containing fumes upon smelting. In 1735, such ores were found to be reducible to a new metal (the first discovered since ancient times), and this was ultimately named for the kobold. Today, some cobalt is produced specifically from various metallic-lustered ores, for example cobaltite , but the main source of the element is as a by-product of copper and nickel mining. The copper belt in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic and Zambia yields most of the cobalt mined worldwide. Cobalt is primarily used in the preparation of magnetic, wear-resistant and high-strength alloys. The compounds, cobalt silicate and cobalt aluminate give a distinctive deep blue color to glass, ceramics, inks, paints and varnishes. Cobalt occurs naturally as only one stable isotope, cobalt-59. Cobalt-60 is a commercially important radioisotope, used as a radioactive tracer and for the production of high energy gamma rays. Cobalt is the active center of coenzymes called cobalamins, the most common example of which is vitamin B12. As such, it is an essential trace dietary mineral for all animals. Cobalt in inorganic form is also a micronutrient for bacteria, algae and fungi.

Ore

08:16
Ore
An ore is a type of rock that contains sufficient minerals with important elements including metals that can be economically extracted from the rock. The ores are extracted through mining; these are then refined (often via smelting) to extract the valuable element(s). The grade or concentration of an ore mineral, or metal, as well as its form of occurrence, will directly affect the costs associated with mining the ore. The cost of extraction must thus be weighed against the metal value contained in the rock to determine what ore can be processed and what ore is of too low a grade to be worth mining. Metal ores are generally oxides, sulfides, silicates, or "native" metals (such as native copper) that are not commonly concentrated in the Earth's crust, or "noble" metals (not usually forming compounds) such as gold. The ores must be processed to extract the metals of interest from the waste rock and from the ore minerals. Ore bodies are formed by a variety of geological processes. The process of ore formation is called ore genesis. This video is targeted to blind users. Attribution: Article text available under CC-BY-SA Creative Commons image source in video

Currently they are leaching Cell One with water only as Cyanide breaks down with water and sunlight. Ore on Cell One is from the Goldspring Phase One era when ore was crushed to 5-minus to 4-1/2-minus. Minus Sizing: means crushed gravel will pass through heavy metal screens with square openings/apertures of 5 inches and 4-1/2 inches - only ore less than 5 inches will pass through the "5-Minus" square holes. Larger ore will move on the shaking screens to a trough that recirculates the larger ore back to the crusher to be further reduced until it can pass through the 5 inch or 4-1/2 inch screens. Ore that large may have had a low efficiency of leaching, hence gold may still be in the ore. If the ore is crushed to a smaller "Minus" determined by McClellan, then cyanide leaching may claim more of the gold left behind. Studies are being conducted to determine if it is worthwhile to reprocess the large size ore. It had an average content of 0.04 OPT Gold (Au). Approximately in 1-2 months they will know for sure what to do with ore on Cell One. Sprinkling with Barren Solution is with either Misters or Drippers. Drippers are better for the Hartford Complex as they provide a more consistent coverage. Visitor perceives Cell One as a large heap. A 1000th of a percent - an approximate ratio of cyanide to water. Cyanide does not leach free gold, therefore a "Cut-Off Grade" determines whether ore is sent to grinding mill or leach pad. Extraction of Chromium Metal from Chromite Ore | Occurrence, Principles and Properties

06:55
Occurrence and principles of extraction of chromium metal from chromite Ore. Atomic mass : 51.99 Valency : 0,1,2,3,4,5,6 Atomic number : 24 Symbol : Cr Position in the periodic table : Period Number -4, Group Number -6. L.N. Vanquelin, a french chemist discovered a new element in 1797, while examining a mineral found in Siberia. It was named chromium because it forms coloured compounds [Greek word - chroma - colour] Occurrence Metallic chromium does not occur in the native state. In India chromite ore occurs in Bihar, Mysore, Chennai and Bombay. Ores The important ore of chromium is Chromite or chrome ore, FeO Cr2 O3 The chief ore of chromium is chromite ore. Extraction of chromium metal from chromite ore The extraction of chromium metal from chromite ore consists of the following steps. 1. Concentration The crushed ore is concentrated by gravity separation method. 2. Conversion of the concentrated chromite ore into Sodium Chromite The concentrated ore is mixed with excess of sodium carbonate and a small amount of lime and roasted in a reverberatory furnace at about 900-1000 degree Celcius in the presence of free supply of air. During this process, chromite ore is converted into soluble sodium chromate. 4(FeO, Cr2 O3) + 8Na2, CO3 + 7O2 (from air) at the temperature between 900-1000 degree celcious forms 8Na2CrO4 (which is Soluble) + 2Fe2O3 (which is Insoluble) + 8CO2 Conversion of Na2, Cr, O4 into Na2, Cr2, O7 The solution containing Na2CrO4 is treated with a calculated quantity of H2SO4, Na2CrO4 is converted into Na2Cr2O7. 2Na2CrO4 + H2SO4 → Na2Cr2O7 + Na2SO4 + H2O Conversion of Na2, Cr2, O7 into Cr2, O3 Na2Cr2O7 is heated with carbon to get sodium chromite, Na2Cr2O4 which on treatment with H2O, gives Cr2O3 precipitate. Na2Cr2O7 + 3C → Na2Cr2O4 + 3CO Na2Cr2O4 + H2O → Cr2O3 (which is the precipitate) + 2 NaOH Properties of Cr Physical Properties 1. The metal is silvery white and crystalline. 2. It is very hard and brittle 3. It melts at 2113K. Chemical Properties 1. Action of air : It is unaffected by air at ordinary temperatures. When heated to very high temperature at about 2000°C it is oxidised to chromic oxide. Chromium plus oxygen gives Chromic oxide. 2. Action of Water : There is no action at ordinary temperatures. However it decomposes steam at red heat to give chromic oxide and hydrogen. Chromium plus steam gives chromic oxide plus hydrogen. 3. Action of Acids : It dissolves in dilute hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid to liberate hydrogen and forms chromous salts. Chromium plus hydrochloric acid gives chromium 2 chloride plus hydrogen. Chromium plus sulphuric acid gives chromium 2 sulphate plus hydrogen. 4. With hot concentrated sulphuric acid it gives chromic sulphate and liberates sulphur dioxide. Chromium plus sulphuric acid gives chromium 3 sulphate plus sulphur dioxide plus water. 5. Dilute nitric acid does not attack the pure metal while concentrated acid renders it inactive or passive i.e., it does not show its usual reactions. 6. Action with Halogens : Chromium combines directly with fluorine and dry chlorine to give chromium (3) halides. Chromium plus fluorine gives chromium 3 fluoride Chromium plus chlorine gives chromium chloride

The world's two largest silver mines have seen big declines in productivity over the past decade as their average ore grades and yields fell considerably, thus forcing costs to more than double. As the Silver Mining Industry's average ore grades continue to decline, it will put more pressure on the mining companies as costs will continue to increase.

Secret hidden ore found by abandoned house in today's My Little Blacksmith Shop gameplay update. Subscribe if you like! + http://bit.ly/1PG8z9G So there were sure to be some hidden things in this particular My Little Blacksmith Shop update, so I thought we'd take a stroll around the map in order to see what we could find. We located several crystals, but even more interesting than that is the fact that there are secret hidden ore locations scattered around here and there. These ore locations are NOT within the mine, which is awesome because it means we can use the horse and carriage to bring the stuff back to the shop instead of trying to utilize a crate like we had been! With the outside ore, we should be able to make money relatively quickly, so that we can start forging the next level of weapons! In this video I have explain about the process of removal of the gangue from the Ore is known as Concentration or Dressing or Benefaction. There are numerous methods of concentration and the methods are chosen based on the properties of the ore. ... Froth Flotation Method: This method is mainly used to remove gangue from sulphide ores. Concentration of ores is important industrial processes and is the first steps to the extraction of the metals. Normally, the ore is concentrated by separating it from the clay body in which it occurs either by gravity, sedimentation, or by a floatation process, before the extraction of the metal from the ore is started. How Uranium Becomes Nuclear Fuel

05:51
Nuclear technology is constantly in the news. So how exactly do you make nuclear fuel? Special thanks to Life Noggin for animating this video! Check them out: http://www.youtube.com/lifenoggin Read More: Fuel Cycle Facilities http://www.nrc.gov/materials/fuel-cycle-fac.html “The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulates uranium recovery facilities that mill uranium; fuel cycle facilities that convert, enrich, and fabricate it into fuel for use in nuclear reactors, and deconversion facilities that process the depleted uranium hexafluoride for disposal.” Uranium processing http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/619232/uranium-processing “Uranium (U), although very dense (19.1 grams per cubic centimetre), is a relatively weak, nonrefractory metal. Indeed, the metallic properties of uranium appear to be intermediate between those of silver and other true metals and those of the nonmetallic elements, so that it is not valued for structural applications.” About Nuclear Fuel Cycle https://infcis.iaea.org/NFCIS/About.cshtml “Nuclear Fuel Cycle can be defined as the set of processes to make use of nuclear materials and to return it to normal state. It starts with the mining of unused nuclear materials from the nature and ends with the safe disposal of used nuclear material in the nature.” Nuclear Fuel Processes http://www.nei.org/Knowledge-Center/Nuclear-Fuel-Processes “Nuclear power plants do not burn any fuel. Instead, they use uranium fuel, consisting of solid ceramic pellets, to produce electricity through a process called fission.” ____________________ DNews is dedicated to satisfying your curiosity and to bringing you mind-bending stories & perspectives you won't find anywhere else! I won't give the exact location of this gold mine, but it's about 20 minutes out from Kingman AZ toward Las Vegas Nevada. Special thanks to Richard my assistant, and Eddie the guard dog.
