Yes madzaea05, It's so very confusing, because we also say "I'm going to the United States" and we consider that a country. I know when to use all this because I was born in the states, but trying to teach it is nightmare!!! People try giving reasons for this, but the truth is there is no explanation for this and all English teachers know this!! You just have to practice speaking and/or listening to a native speaker.

It doesn't matter if you begin the sentece with or without THE. What matters is the WORD which is after THE. For example: "Yesterday I saw a strange cat. The cat was green". ;)) In the 1st sentence we mention A CAT, some indefinite cat. In the 2nd sentence we already know what CAT we talk about, the specific cat.

Hi! Thank you for your video. I thought it was so helpful that I did a Spanish version on my blog. It's not a video, but I quote this video saying that I got the info from here. It's for Spanish students who prefer to read English grammar in Spanish. If you want to have a look, just click here: englishforteenssalmma.blogspot.com/2011/11/usos-del-articulo-cuando-hablamos-de.html Very good tutorials!! Thank you!
